I’m amazed that the Browns just can’t stop gambling and go all in when the odds are so poor?

The Browns need to win the lottery and get a top ten talent when they draft a QB and he probably has to be ready to win from the gekko.

Even if they do a FA and draft grand slam it probably wouldn’t be enough to beat the very best teams in the next two three seasons.
Too many holes in the roster and too many of our corner stone players are on the end of their career’s.

The only upside is that Berry has to deliver now.
We can’t continue with one of the worst general managers in the NFL too long.

The Browns have been to the playoffs 2 times in Garrett's 8 years with Cleveland so he is not the Tom Brady of Defense. He is a phenomenal player, undoubtedly. We have tons and tons of Capital tied up in a DE and a QB on the bench.

I have no problems with Myles making a deal for more money. Especially when I read that he said to get it DONE so he could help recruit players. This tells me he has accepted his fate with the Browns and is going all in to go to the Super Bowl with the Browns. Trust me, Myles has a voice that reaches people in the league because is a pillar for this team that is so strong that the team at least has a CHANCE to win it all with him on the team.

Now go get Flacco and lets run WILD!

I would love to see Flacco rekindle the magic and fun he had with he Browns. The Colts benched him though, don't forget. Hopefully it was just a Colts "system" thing that Flacco wasn't doing well with. Who knows.

I WANT TO WIN!
I want to win so badly that I will gobble up what little is left of the cap.
I wanted this over early so I can recruit other FA's,my ass.
I could respect him more if only he had to courage to say "show me the money"
Garrett took another swing with his helmet this time he KO'd the browns.

In the last ten seasons there’re two philosophies that have been long term successful. (correct me if you think I’m wrong)

The KCC and NEP has nearly mastered both of them. Find the undoubtably best QB and pair him with an elite HC and you get the best of two worlds.

Pat Mahomes, Tyreek Hill, Travis Kelce, Andy Reid and a decent defense. Almost unstoppable.
Pat Mahomes, Travis Kelce, Andy Reid paired with an elite defensive. Good enough to win the SB.
Tom Brady, Gronk, Julian Edelman, Bill Belichick with an elite defense and you have a couple of Super Bowls.

The other philosophy is to build a TEAM.

The Eagles were stocked with great talents on both sides. They build their offensive system on a great running game but the key factor was their almost complete defense.
The Rams were also loaded with talent on both sides but the corner stone of their success was their defense.

The above reasons is why I think it’s wrong to build a team around a couple of top earners if you don’t have the undoubtedly best QB paired with an elite HC.

The Browns have gone all in on Watson and now they do the same with Myles Garrett. In my opinion that’s short sighted because both of these players aren’t good enough to make difference on their own. Without a very good team around them and an elite HC it’s almost wasted money from my perspective.

The Browns should in my opinion build a team based on a well suited philosophy!

Start with building an elite defense, like our 2023 team. We can do it again. Then find a multi talented QB with the right mentality so we can build our offense on both a great running and a decent passing game. Don’t throw Hollywood balls, take the safe option.

The Watson project ended in a fiasco.

That’s why I’m pessimistic. I’m not sure giving Garrett so much guaranteed money is wise, based on history the odds are low for that to be a long term success. Trading for Watson and giving him 230M guaranteed was a panic decision. Giving Garrett 100+M guaranteed is also a panic move.

So far there’s nothing in Andrew Berry’s team building that fill me with confidence. He’s still chasing diamonds in the sand to get rich and the odds are low for that to works.

I agree with your thought. For the Browns it was about the quality of the picks. I have tried to explain this to you on several posts. To me, a couple of 1st rounders that are at and likely to still be at the top of the round are more valuable than several picks at the end of the round.

Getting a 1st rounder from the Eagles as an example is basically getting a 2nd round pick.

The Browns weren't going to trade Garrett. That became clear when Haslam didn't talk to Garrett. Why talk to him when there wasn't anything to say? Nothing was going to change.

Myles may still come out and want a trade in a few years. At that time he will have some control over where he goes and the Browns will have him locked in to a long term contract that will make him more attractive to other teams to secure in trade.

This signing makes it easier for some other team to make a trade. For that matter, the legwork of getting Myles into a contract is possibly part of a trade proposal already in place? I don't think it is a big chance, but a chance none the less. Things went from peaches and vinegar to peaches and cream pretty quick.

Fortunately for him, he is not the only one. Pit and Flo are a few other examples of people thinking they are always right and everyone else is wrong. They show us how they fail once again.

Looking back at the previous "Garret Wants Traded" threads was quite the treat and encourage everyone to review.

It is called negotiations. Football is a business. It is entertainment for us. But it is a business for those that work in that industry. I applaud the Browns for how they handled this situation. They allowed Myles to saber rattle. Stuck to their guns. They knew they were in the position of power all along. Then gave him a contract. One that frees some cap space no. Gives Garrett more control in the future with the no trade clause. That I predicted he would ask for. That way if he was ever traded, he can say which teams he can be traded for. He did not have that power 2 days ago. This deal was a win win for the team and player.

I never tried to. Can you explain why you make up ridiculous questions when you don't have a valid response?

Because it makes sense. Teams with multiple needs won't package a lot of their resources and them tie them up into one player when they need so much help to compete.

Quote
Berry wasn't going to make a deal for less value than Myles is worth. Of course, those SB teams are more likely to make a deal that's worse for the Browns and better for them.

Teams on the cusp who feel they only need 1 or 2 players to take them over the top are more likely to give you multiple resources to get to that SB, not less.

I don't disagree with you. My point was you would get a lot more picks from a team on the cusp of making the SB who feel that one or two dominate players would get them to a SB than a team near the top of the draft that need multiple players to compete. If you look at the teams in the top 10 or even top 15 in the draft, they aren't in a position to give up top draft picks for a single DE from a team needs standpoint.

If this FO didn't feel they got a fair offer for Myles and they actually think they can afford the contract with the albatross they already have around their necks with the watson deal, more power to them.

My only point was that you weren't going to get teams at the top of draft to package a lot of picks for Garrett. And from looking at the outcome that appears to be true.

Actually, yes I do. As I said, Garrett was going to get paid wherever he went - including the Browns. He got paid - but what has this done for the Browns?

1. Is signing Garrett to the richest contract for a non-quarterback improved the Browns overall team from where they were at seasons end in February?

2. Has the Browns defense gotten better, the offense gotten better, or how about special teams - have they (the Browns) gotten any better than 2024 with this signing?

I'm not against extending Garrett - quite the opposite. However, when the Browns clearly show that they cannot trade Garrett due to the amount of dead cap it would trigger ($36M), creating a much larger dead cap bucket guaranteed in the future is a real head scratcher. Add into that fact, it is clear that any free agent signed and all the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd round draft picks will add to that dead cap bucket because the Browns do not have the cap capital to sign them to a regular contract.

The Browns have 19 former players that Berry prorated their salaries that are generating dead cap money for 2025. The worst of the bunch are Cooper @ $22,584,000, Za'Darius Smith @ $14,233,000, Wills @ $11,812,057, Winston @ $2,232,000 and Quinton Jefferson @ $1,960,000 of the $55,363,941 currently owed. That's a butt load of cash flying out the window when you currently have only $12,555,650 in available cap space today for free agency, contract extensions, and the draft. To think that in order to get to that $12,555,650 surplus you had to restructure the contract again for a player that is clearly becoming the worst trade in NFL history further adding to his dead cap hit when finally released. Remember, dead cap money can never be adjusted or taken away and Watson's dead cap is now at $125,076,244 in 2025 if cut and $89,394,566 in 2026 if cut then. His insurance money, if paid, has no effect on his dead cap number.

That's how I feel today!

The number of resources doesn't matter as much as the overall value of the trade package.

Beyond that, I'm done trying to reason with you. No one can convince anybody of truths that they willfully ignore. Maybe ignorance is bliss for you. You're welcome to it. Have a nice life.

As per usual this one keeps flying over your head. I'm fully aware that teams in the top 10-15 of the draft have picks much more valuable. I'm fully aware that picks later in the round are far less valuable. The later the pick the less they are worth. As much as you would like to make that the argument here it never has been.

My point all along is that the teams at the top of the draft are there for a reason. In may cases they have no QB. In most cases they have several holes on their roster and they can't fill all of those holes in the FA market. Spending those resources on a single player in order to fill one of those holes while having so many holes left on the table makes zero sense for those teams. So all those high in sky dreams people had about getting super high draft pick packages for Myles were a pipe dream.

The only teams that would package multiple picks for Garrett are teams that feel they are a player or two away from being in or winning the SB. For them that makes sense.

Why you would think anyone wouldn't know lower picks an any round are less valuable than higher picks in the same round are beyond me. The issue all along is that teams near the top of the draft weren't going to put such a package together to begin with. The only teams that would consider putting such a package together were teams drafting later.

The offers fans hoped would come were never going to come. The Browns could either consider if the teams near the bottom of the draft orders offers worth trading Garrett for or not. Those were their only possible options.

I'm sorry you didn't get it and I'm not sure there are any more ways left to explain it to you. But I'll try one more.....

Do you seriously believe that if the Browns felt it was possible to get offers to trade Garrett for a top 10 pick in both the first and second round this year from a team that high in the draft combined with more picks next year from a bad team which would most likely give them top picks in those rounds they would have refused to entertain offers to trade him? Do you really think they are that foolish? No, they're not. They were fully aware that what I'm telling you is correct.

That's a good idea. You are engaging with a poster who said, because the Browns didn't want to trade Garrett and had intentions to extend him (which they executed), as a "classless" organization.

I've been seeing this sentiment a bit around here and Reddit.

I can understand people feeling this way, but I think with Myles it really is just business, FWIW. I dunno... with him I don't get the feeling that he's ever checked out when he's on the field. Just a very steady guy.

Another good post Steve.

Our roster is so full of holes that we could even start the season with Joe Burrow or similar as our QB and still have huge problems to win the division, that’s how far away we’re results wise based on our performances from last season.

Seeing us ending up with approximately 7-8 wins in 2025 doesn’t inspire me. That’s a “middle of the pack” mentality that coming from having an average GM and HC who don’t have the ability to take us to next level and almost every new season has to correct recent seasons mistakes. One step forward and two steps back will continue as long as Andrew Berry isn’t willing to solve his major problem who’s the root of why the Browns struggles to match the very best, his endless manipulating of the salary cap without filling the team with new talents and making any significant improvements of our results.

Until the Browns truly find an elite quarterback to match Lamar, Burrow, Allen and Mahomes, or an elite GM or a top notch HC nothing will really change.

Why would you call the man what you called him because he negotiated a deal to get paid and to get better control of his own future the no trade clause. Negotiations are what they are. You have to play the best hand possible and most of us realized Garrett did not really have any leverage besides saber rattling. He did what was best for him and got the best deal he could actually get.

He also really helped the team by extending his contract. He said it was important to him to get that deal done before the free agency period started so he could help attract others players to the team. I think this deal was a win win for Myles and the team.

My take and feelings on this, jmo

Myles took it to the media and said he didn't want to be on the team and he wanted to be traded.

He said " I want to be on a contender, It's about the opportunity to win the Lombardi.

Going from Cleveland to Canton meant nothing to him.

Money meant nothing to him.

Blatant lies and bs drama.

Whose is he going to attract to the team ?

A franchise QB ?

There are lots of young good D and offense players in the draft.

Is he going to bring in the much needed DL men who can stop the run ?

A much needed LB and DB's

How about the much needed OL men

There was an opportunity to build the team and I feel that just got taken away.

As you said he did what was best for him

What about the team ?

Do the Browns have money to bring in people Myles thinks he can recruit ?

29 years old and already has had injuries, especially the shoulder.

Maybe if he did this all behind the closed doors.

He doesn't believe the Browns are a contender, he said it.

Most people feel the same.

But to call out your coaches and teammates like that, saying you're not good enough for me.

I would help him pack his bags, see ya ! go get your Lombardi.

Don't trash your team on national news

Imo, that's what he did to them

Don't forget he's human....and I don't think he lied. He's a competitor, he'd love to be on a contender....he got paid and he DID NOT CONTROL his future.
He will be in HOF and his name will be up on Cleveland legends Ring of Honor. He's a terrible man....NOT- give us your best and thanks.

He is setting himself up for life after football, movies or TV.The lovable Myles. He can't have a stain like a contract holdout, for God forbid more money.
The browns, watson, and Garrett deserve each other. But what they don't deserve is a tax payer funded new stadium.

If only you held everyone to that same standard.

Intoducing for The Cleveland Browns, Quarterback Deshawn "The Predator" Watson. He will also be the one to choose your next head coach.

And #2 is one thing Berry doesn't do, which makes him good at what he does......and that is to wait to extend a player.

Bengals promised to make Chase the highest paid non-QB and we might have just hurt our rival, who doesn't have the cash flow/flexibility that Haslem does.

Winners & Losers of FA Day 2....Losers:

Quote
Teams that wait to extend their cornerstone players: Myles Garrett's big contract was great for him and the Browns and terrible for teams that didn't proactively work to get their best players under contract early. Garrett's pact -- a new four-year extension worth $40 million per year, with $123 million guaranteed -- completely reset the market for elite pass rushers and for those who aim to be the highest paid non-quarterbacks in the league. The Bengals have said publicly they will make receiver Ja’Marr Chase the highest paid non-QB, and in the space of last week, the number to get that done jumped by $5 million per year, from $35 million -- Justin Jefferson's deal, signed last year -- to $40 million, what Garrett got. The Bengals were close to wrapping up Chase last year, but by failing to close the deal then, they cost themselves millions of dollars over the life of the contract Chase will eventually get.
The same goes for the Cowboys and Micah Parsons, a year after the Cowboys waited until the last possible moment to get extensions done for CeeDee Lamb and Dak Prescott. The market always goes up for players at premium positions, and in addition to costing the teams many millions of dollars they could have allocated to other needs, these kind of delays often lead to frustration and distraction for the players. Moving aggressively to lock up cornerstone players also sends a strong signal to locker rooms about the team's willingness to reward excellence. Final point: think the Raiders are happy they got Maxx Crosby's new deal, which briefly made him the highest-paid non quarterback, over the finish line before Garrett's?

Still feel the same today???

Well if it wasn't money what caused a 110 percent 360 degree u turn
in demands, and attitude just as soon as he signed his name to that new contract, just hwat the hell was it LOL

1. Answer..... NO but it did keep it from getting much worse.
2. NO

As far as cap space you sure seem to do a hell of a lot more worrying about it than NFL teams do. If you can tell me exactly the moves the Browns will be making before next season starts, then I will gladly listen to every post you make fretting about our cap.

Gonna be hard to sign a veteran QB now. Oh well we have the draft as our SB once again.

Feel like they are playing the semantics game for engagement a bit there.

While skipped is technical true, saying he was excused from attending for whatever reason doesn't have the same impact.

It's such a huge problem that the Browns just made him the highest paid non QB in the NFL.

The FO's decision making on character "flaws" of huge $$$ signings is quite suspect. If we just throw enough money at these "stars" their behavior will change.

That had to be one of the most pointless and dumb press conferences I have heard.

The Browns have a knack for making matters worse with a press conference.

It would have made more sense to come out with a press release, reflecting on public comments with a renewed focus on the future, and simply leave it at that.
