Elon Musk’s company avoided almost all federal income tax on nearly $11 billion of U.S. income over three years
Tesla, the most valuable automaker in the world valued at over $1 trillion, did not pay any federal income tax last year.

Tesla’s annual financial report, released this morning, shows the company enjoyed $2.3 billion of U.S. income in 2024 on which it reports precisely zero current federal income tax. Over the past three years, the Elon Musk-led company reports $10.8 billion of U.S. income on which its current federal tax was just $48 million. That comes to a three-year federal tax rate of just 0.4 percent – more than 50 times less than the statutory corporate tax rate of 21 percent.

Tesla saved half a billion in taxes last year using accelerated depreciation. Tax breaks for executive stock options shaved a quarter billion off the company’s tax bill. Unspecified “U.S. tax credits” were good for $300 million of tax savings. Musk’s company also used net operating losses to offset current year income, although it’s hard to know how much of that affects U.S. income rather than the company’s far-larger foreign income.

Congress might give Tesla even more tax breaks. A bill passed by the House of Representatives in the previous Congress would have retroactively reinstated a provision allowing full expensing of research and development expenses which could save the company up to $2.4 billion in taxes.

US judge orders DOGE, Musk to produce cost-cutting records

(Reuters) - A U.S. judge has ordered Elon Musk and his Department of Government Efficiency to turn over a variety of records and answer questions describing their efforts to slash federal spending.

Wednesday night's decision by U.S. District Judge Tanya Chutkan in Washington, D.C., came in a lawsuit by 14 Democratic state attorneys general against Musk, DOGE and Republican President Donald Trump.

The states argued that Musk violated the Constitution by wielding power that only officials confirmed by the U.S. Senate can exercise under the Appointments Clause, and sought materials from him through a process known as discovery.

Chutkan, an appointee of Democratic President Barack Obama, said her order focused mainly on who at DOGE was making cost-cutting decisions and how far they could go.

"Defendants argue that the 'inner workings of government' are immaterial to an Appointments Clause claim," she wrote. "The court is not convinced, but that is a legal issue appropriate for resolution after fulsome briefing.

"At this stage," she added, "it is sufficient that plaintiffs' discovery requests intend to reveal the scope of DOGE's and Musk's authority."

The U.S. Department of Justice, which represents the defendants, did not immediately respond on Thursday to a request for comment.

Chutkan limited discovery requests to material concerning agencies, employees, contracts, grants, federal funding, legal agreements, databases and data management systems that involve or engage with the 14 states as well as entities they operate or fund.

She rejected the states' request to obtain sworn testimony through depositions, and said her order does not apply to Trump.

Republican and Democratic administrations have long resisted efforts to force top White House advisers to provide court testimony or information they consider privileged.

Musk and DOGE have until April 2 to comply with Chutkan's order.

The lawsuit sought to bar DOGE from accessing information systems at several government departments and firing federal employees or putting them on leave.

I agree. He is finding frivolous spending and much of it was funneling funds to Democrats. Stacy Abrams owes the American people a lot of money. Saving cash like that maybe we can get our taxes cut. I am tired of giving so much to the government.

If all of these things you keep saying, which is nothing more than repeating what Musk and his cronies are telling you, then why is Musk refusing to turn over the records to prove that's true? Why would there be a need to take him to court to get those records? You may want to wait until the actual facts come out before just repeating what you're being told.

See, we agree that trans people should not have rights that infringe on the rights or privacy of others. They don't belong in the opposing sex bathrooms or locker rooms. Males who transgender into females do not belong in women's sports. If they become transgender that does not give them permission to impose on the rights of others. But other than that, who cares what they identify as? What difference does it make? And why is it that you think something you have never experienced and don't understand makes it a mental illness?

Teenager Edward Coristine, a member of the DOGE team, is now a senior adviser in several federal departments thanks to Elon Musk. Coristine was previously fired from an internship for reportedly leaking information to competitors. He also worked briefly at Musk’s brain-implant company Neuralink.

Thanks to Elon Musk, a teenager with a rocky track record now wields significant influence in the federal government as a senior advisor in multiple departments.

Edward Coristine, 19, was most recently a freshman mechanical engineering and physics major at Boston’s Northeastern University until joining Elon Musk’s cost-cutting team at DOGE. The department has been busy in recent weeks conducting mass layoffs and scaling back federal spending.

Now Coristine is reportedly a senior advisor at both the State Department and the Department of Homeland Security as part of DOGE’s department overlapping cost-cutting efforts, the Washington Post reported. Coristine is also listed as one of several “experts” at the Office of Personnel Management, the government’s HR department, Wired reported.

Coristine is the son of Charles Coristine, the CEO of organic-snack company LesserEvil; Charles Coristine bought the company in 2011 after quitting his job at Morgan Stanley. The company has been profitable since 2021, CNBC reported.

The younger Coristine took a leap into government after he previously interned at technology security company Path Network and worked briefly at Musk’s brain-implant company Neuralink, according to Bloomberg.

Coristine was reportedly fired from his internship at Path Network after he allegedly leaked information to competitors, Bloomberg reported. Coristine later posted on instant-messaging platform Discord that he did “nothing contractually wrong” while working at Path Network, according to Bloomberg.

Coristine did not return messages seeking comment. DOGE and the White House did not respond to a request for comment.

At the State Department’s Bureau of Diplomatic Technology, Coristine potentially has access to sensitive information, according to Bloomberg. Democratic senators, including Ron Wyden (D-Ore.), have already spoken out with concern about DOGE’s considerable reach and its cost-cutting mission.

“Giving Elon Musk's goon squad access to systems that control payments to Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid and other key federal programs is a national security nightmare," Wyden told Bloomberg.

The Washington Post identified at least six engineers under the age of 25 working for Musk’s DOGE. One of the engineers, 25-year-old Marko Elez, resigned after the Wall Street Journal reported on alleged past posts that were racist in nature. Musk said later in a post on X he would rehire Elez, because “to err is human, to forgive divine.” Elez has been reportedly reinstated at the Social Security Administration, according to Bloomberg.

Coristine also has a history of controversial and offensive posts, according to Substack newsletter MuskWatch, which tracks the activities of Elon Musk.

When 50-80% of the country can’t cover basic needs, what exactly do you think will happen? Crime will spike and no local government will be able to protect you. I know it sounds hair on fire, but we are literally months away from total chaos. And nobody gives a damn in our government.
