Newsome being on the last year of his rookie deal makes his trade value less. It leaves the team who acquires him to get him on a one year rental before having to face negotiating a new contract. And as was mentioned in another thread we have heard about him being traded for quite some time now. My guess is if they found an offer of what they determine to be good value he would have been gone by now. But hey, who knows?

I am ready for Okoronkwo to go
He may be the worst tackler on the team
That includes our Kicker and Punter

My prediction is that Newsome gets moved as a trade sweetener.

I don't rule out anything as being a possibility. It's simply that his value would be greater if he had more than one year left on his contract.

Agreed...and would also have more value if he played like the 1st Rd pick that he is.

The problem with trading Newsome is his $13.77M guaranteed contract. That's why the sport guru's are saying that he's only worth a 5th or 6th round pick even though he was a 1st round draft pick. He lost his job to Emerson and has struggled in the slot. Trade partners are hedging on paying $13,77M to a player in his final contract year who has struggled on the field the last 2 seasons. If the Browns eat part of the salary, they'll be able to easily move him - I don't believe Berry has the cash to do that so Newsome will probably stay through his final contract year here much like Wills.

No doubt the last year makes it less valuable, but it could have it's most value on draft night. He could become a trade up asset, but like you said, who knows? Only time will tell.

Ken Carman said earlier today he’s heard rumblings of Chubb going to an AFC North team.

I will be so pissed if Chubb signs with ANY AFCN team other than the Browns.

On his 5th team in 4 years . What can he possibly give to
This offense? You need 8 yards for 1st down.. he will give you 5.

I don't mind the signing. Who else was out there? Anybody we sign at this point is just an average player. In addition, we do have some salary limitations.

Personally, I'm not a fan of bringing a guy into the locker room who threw one of the QBs under the bus while they were teammates and also refused to go in a game while playing with Ravens and then they subsequently cut this team cancer.

I always kinda go back and forth on these announcements. You have a ton of people that rail against this FO (before anyone gets all hot and bothered, this FO earns a good amount of the criticism it gets), but then we seem to have a steady flow of these guys get poached for better jobs (I THINK his position with the Titans is a promotion, please correct me if I'm wrong).

This is where my heart outweighs my brain. I don’t care if he sucks and if we are a team of round holes and he’s a square peg. I still want him to be a part of it.

And that's where the conundrum lies. On the one hand I think all, or at least almost all of us want Chubb back on the team. For me he has embodied the true definition of what a Browns player should be. Both on the field as well as off the field. He is a leader and would be a great role model for the young backs.

On the flip side of the coin there are only so many roster spots available. The job of a GM, whether we like it or not, is compose a roster out of the best 53 players they can. 48 active on game day and the remaining 5 either on IR or reserve. From an emotional standpoint those decisions are sometimes not popular ones. Yet at the same time I understand them. Thus the difference in what I want to happen compared to what might happen.

As far as what I think the outcome may be I have no clue. I have no idea the development of Chubb's recovery. I have no idea how much he may be able to contribute now. Seeing some of the things he does in workouts has nothing to do with what he can do on game day so I sort of ignore that.

As much as I would like to see Chubb in a Browns uniform again, the fact that not only haven't the Browns signed him, but nobody else has either is a hint to me. As much as I would love to see him back on the team I also expect the GM to do his job.

I'm with you. I have read that Chicago is heavily recruiting him and Ford taking less money to gain himself a roster spot makes it look bleak.

I don't think it has to be one or the other. We have 2 rookies and Ford at RB. There's room on the roster.

I said the other day the only way Chubb made the team was if we got rid of, or beats out Ford. Without the pay cut there was a Good chance that Chubb would have been our RB 3 this year. Now barring a trade or injury that does not look good.

This isn’t coming down to Jerome Ford, it’s Pierre Strong. During 90% of the Berry/Stefanski tenure, they have carried 4 RBs on the 53 man roster. We currently have 4 RBs, if Chubb were to come on, it would be to replace Pierre Strong.

At least it now sends Chubb a massage as to how much money we would be willing to pay him. I think that is over the vet minimum for his time in service. Possibly a bit more, but it gives the range. If Chubb signs, Strong is the odd man out once cuts happen...assuming Chubbs shows juice.

We wouldn't want to pay Ford 3 mil, plus Chubb another 3 mil. Maybe we are looking to keep both in the 4 mil range.

Another maybe...with Ford dropping his salary we now have more to offer Chubb to get competitive with the Bears offer.

Berry doesn't negotiate in public, so we have no idea where all of this stands.

Best news on the Nick Chubb front, Mary Kay Cabot is reporting the Browns are likely moving on from Chubb.. if history holds true, this means he’ll be back in a Browns uniform soon. She might just be the worst beat reporter in all of sports.

It didn't long for the news of Ford taking a "pay cut" leaking out, did it..?

Ford took the cut on Friday, reducing his guaranteed salary by about half, from $3.486 million to a guaranteed $1.75 million.

You may be correct...however...we may have (4) QBs on the (53) and if we are going 'TE heavy' will have (4) TEs on the 53. The 'extra' spot(s) have to come from somewhere.

That's after the negotiations are over. Once the deal is done. Which has nothing to do with publicly discussing the negotiations themselves.

I don't understand the benefit of this for Ford.

1, makes him easier to cut
2, if he does get cut then he makes 1.7 million less
3, what is the plus for him?

My guess is it was reality based. Players have agents who know pretty well what the value of the players they represent are worth on the open market. Ford had just over 100 carries last year which is almost half of the number of carries he had in 2023. (204 carries) My guess would be that if the people representing Ford felt he could do better on the open market he would never have signed such a deal. My guess would be that Ford was worth a lot more as the #2 RB on the roster than being considered the #3 RB on the roster.
