Robert Prevost, now Pope Leo XIV, from Chicago. First American pope. No idea what his views are. I do know that Pope Leo XIII was a big champion of workers' rights, fair wages and equity for the poor. Wasn't a fan of either socialism or unbridled capitalism, which I can identify with. Not sure if that is indicative of what the new guy will advocate for or not.

I say our, though I am not Catholic. He is still an important figure in my religion, so he represents my values as well.

I have a few MAGA neighbors and for whatever reason, they seem angry over Pope Leo's election.

Gotta tell you, I don't understand. He's been Pope for less than 24 hours and they are already name calling.

MAGA only understands/respects bending the knee to Trump. This guy has kinda made a point of doing the opposite, if what I've read is correct.

Laura Loomer, whose criticisms of Trump officials helped bring about their ouster, has a new target outside the administration: Pope Leo XIV.

The 9/11 conspiracy theorist was among those on the right who voiced their displeasure over the development of Robert Francis Prevost, an American, being elected 267th pope on Thursday, just the second day of conclave.

“He is anti-Trump, anti-MAGA, pro-open Borders, and a total Marxist like Pope Francis,” Loomer argued in a social media post. “Catholics don’t have anything good to look forward to. Just another Marxist puppet in the Vatican.”


Loomer was responding to an incident in which Prevost, in 2015, shared a Washington Post opinion piece by Cardinal Timothy Dolan titled, “Why Donald Trump’s anti-immigrant rhetoric is so problematic.”

Loomer was joined in her criticism by far-right podcaster and Pizzagate promoter Jack Posobiec.

“What I’m seeing from his social media does not bode well for Trump supporters,” he said on Real America’s Voice, adding later: “God save the church.”

Conspiracy theorist Alex Jones, meanwhile, promoted a guest on his show who would explain why the new pope “is a continuation of the globalist takeover of the Catholic church & will be used to wage war against President Trump.”

One highly followed X user similarly responded to the news by slapping a pejorative label on the world’s Catholic leader.

“I can now officially diagnose the new Pope with a high level of ‘Trump & Vance Derangement Syndrome.’ The evidence suggests he’s a mass migration lover like Francis,” user BehizyTweets wrote.

Former Fox News host Megyn Kelly opted against name-calling in favor of a more measured—yet still wary—reaction.

“Is it too much to hope that some 20-year-old ran the new pope’s X account and he never looked at it?” she weighed in.

As for Trump, whose ear Loomer apparently has, the president has thus far had kind words for the new pope.

“It is such an honor to realize that he is the first American Pope,” Trump wrote on Truth Social. “What excitement, and what a Great Honor for our Country. I look forward to meeting Pope Leo XIV. It will be a very meaningful moment!”

Another post by Prevost likely to generate criticism from Loomer and others is how he shared an article that called Vice President JD Vance—an adult Catholic convert—“wrong” for effectively promoting a ranking system for how to best show love for others.

And in 2017, after Trump had suspended the U.S. refugee program, Prevost reposted a tweet saying, “We’re banning all Syrian refugees? The men, women and children who *most* need help? What an immoral nation we are becoming. Jesus weeps.”

"If that's the case" being the key phrase in your post. I'm not sure who on here or even the new Pope you think is "for open borders". There's a huge difference in treating all people like human beings, not vilifying every immigrant by lumping them all together by claiming they're all criminals and sending them to a foreign prison without due process. There is a right way and a wrong way to enter this country. Those that enter legally should be welcomed with open arms. They have been vetted properly and add value to our society. Those that enter the country illegally are criminals. It is a criminal act to enter a country unlawfully. Illegal immigration brings drugs into our country that kills American youth. It brings the sex slave industry into our country. Increases criminal activity. Murderers, rapists, buglers, etc... enter illegally. The play on words is that we do not support immigration. the fact is we do not support illegal immigration that comes with open borders.

There's also a right way and a wrong way and process to deport people. It seems that right way and the wrong only applies in certain circumstances to some people. Simply claiming someone belongs to a gang and sending them to prison with no criminal charges is the wrong way. That's why we have due process.

Note, you did not mention the elephant- immigration reform by Congress-- no, emphasis is on open borders- that's the MAGA montra. We need immigrants. You should try other news outlets besides Fox News and the like, then.

Most people can at least acknowledge that we have laws on the books regarding immigration, and if someone breaks those laws, then they are (by definition) a criminal. How much of a problem this actually is for the country and what to do about it are the parts where the conversation gets argumentative.


I could go on from here, but lately I've been asking a LOT of sincere questions trying to square this admin's policies with bare-minimum consistency and common sense, and both you and DotD (you two and Memphis are basically the only Trump supporters posting now) keep ducking those questions.

Since we're being honest here I didn't hear many on the right complaining when Reagan pardoned over 2 million of them either. Or Republican small business owners complaining as they kept hiring them .

The fact are that no one understands the immigration laws and it has been about 40 years since the laws were changed.

Congress and the executive branch has never figured out how to fix it, and it is my opinion that that is intentional. See last year election with Trump effectively killing the proposed changes.

There were attempts by Bush and Obama, neither one worked.

Now we have a mess, and Trumps policies are cruel but effective, and some of things that have happened are simply illegal. I have no idea why homeland security, ICE and other agencies adopted masks and hoods as part of their uniform. Across the border Immigration has slowed significantly as potential immigrants understand that Trump is vindictive.

I think Trump enjoys the perverse cruelty.

Have you been paying attention? trump is trying every way possible to revoke the legal status of many immigrants. Three separate students that have been detained had legal status when they were detained. Courts ordered all of them released and they were. Some had their immigration hearings for asylum pending when they were detained. Trump is trying to make many who are here legally suddenly be illegal........

You do realize that the people I listed didn't "cross the border illegally" right? One man was detained as he was entering to take his citizenship test.

trump is trying to make 500k people who are here legally, illegal. He's trying to create a situation where people here legally would now be illegal. What part of that are you still not getting?

The problem was the past administration allowed the border to be the wild wild west. I would like every immigrant to be properly vetted before entering the country. If that is what is happening, I have no problem with that. I do not want to hear any more stories about college students in Georgia being hunted, stalked, and killed like prey. This is a civilized country, and we do not need any more of that to pour over the border unchecked.

Nobody has the right to just make claims that they are gang members or drug dealers and send them off to foreign prisons without having to show that evidence and having it found true in a court.

There are legal means which are set in place to deport people. That's what the issue is here. Either you stand with the constitution or you give a president authority outside of the constitution and rule of law. I'm all for deporting people who came to this country illegally. so is everyone I know. But not by unlawful means. Trying to blame Biden as some excuse trump doesn't have to follow the law is not going to cut it.
