I may be looking for a new phone. I currently use an Android....maybe a 40Vthin. It's maybe 5-6 years old. No real issue except for some reason it won't pull up android auto. My son plugged in his Apple phone, then after that I can't get Android auto.
I am wondering if I should just get an Apple phone?
I don't use it for much. I am an old guy. To me it's main function is a phone, but I do like to have GPS navigation to be able to see traffic a few miles down the road and to be able to get some workarounds for bad traffic if I am in an area where I don't already know the workarounds.
If you might have a solution why my car isn't picking up my android, a possible fix would be appreciated.
If it is a new phone, que me in on apples. I have never had an apple anything.

For your Android phone, trying deleting it in the car, then hooking it back up, fixes my issues most of the time with my iphone. Or restart the phone. You’ve probably done both already.

I restart the phone every few days. Restarts are always good. I haven't deleted the phone from the car. I'll try that.

Are you connecting the phone with a USB cable?
Depending on the year of the vehicle, the Android Auto over Bluetooth feature may not be in yet.
I assume, however, you are connecting the way you always have and it's a case of what used to work just doesn't now. I suspect that it's just possible that the car is having an issue switching back to Android Auto after using CarPlay. This, apparently, isn't entirely uncommon. Here are some Google AI recommendations....
Check Your Car's Settings: Android Auto Enabled: Ensure Android Auto is enabled in your car's settings. Some cars have a dedicated setting for this, while others might require you to select it within the infotainment system.
Start Automatically: In your Android Auto settings on your phone, make sure "Start Android Auto automatically" is set to "Always".
Wired vs. Wireless: If your car supports both wired and wireless connections, try switching between them. Some users have found that switching from a wireless connection to a wired one can resolve the issue.
Restart the Head Unit: Restarting your car's infotainment system (the head unit) can help resolve connection issues. You can often do this by holding down the power button for a few seconds
Firmware Updates: Check for firmware updates for your car's infotainment system, as outdated software can cause compatibility issues.
Check Your Phone's Settings: Restart Your Phone: A simple restart of your phone can often fix minor glitches that might be interfering with the connection.
Android Auto Permissions: Make sure all necessary permissions (call logs, contacts, microphone, location, notifications, SMS) are enabled for the Android Auto app.
Clear Cache and Data: Clearing the cache and data for the Android Auto app can resolve issues caused by corrupted data.
Reinstall Android Auto: Uninstalling and reinstalling the Android Auto app can be helpful in some cases.
Update Android Auto: Ensure your Android Auto app is updated to the latest version.
Check Your USB Connection: Try a Different Cable: If you're using a wired connection, try using a different USB cable and potentially a different USB port on your car.
Use the Cable That Came with Your Phone: Sometimes, using the USB cable that came with your phone, especially if it's a USB-C cable, can resolve connection problems.
Check Bluetooth Connection (if using wireless): Bluetooth ON: Make sure Bluetooth is turned on both on your phone and in your car's settings.
Forget and Re-pair: If you've previously paired your phone with another car or device, try forgetting the connection in your phone's Bluetooth settings and then re-pairing it with your car.

Thanks. I did get it working.
Not sure what I did, but I did connect my wife's Android phone to see if it connected, and it did so I knew it was a cord or car problem.
I then connected mine and it worked. Heck, I was ready to just go buy a new phone. I feel like I saved $1500. No 4 year contracts for me. Just buy the phone. Now I feel like I can go buy some new irons or something. I sure as heck didn't want to buy a friggen phone. I suspect it was the Apple Play screwing with my system. I'll go look around to try to set it to always on as you suggest., OR, I'll just tell my son to stay away from my car and quit messing with my stuff!
As I have gotten older I don't deal well with unneeded aggravation. Grumpy old man syndrome. Heck, I earned it.

In many ways I hate what phones have become...I liked it when you were just out and about and had to wait until you got home to see if there were messages on the answering machine. Personally I think smart phones has had a net negative effect on society by far and we'd be better without them. That being said, I've had mine for about 8 years. The screen is cracked up and it's in rough shape. Instead of going with something at the local store, I discovered a project that is ongoing from a company that is "remaking" the Blackberry phones. Full physical keyboard in all its lovely glory! It'll run a version of Android and is compatible with all major US carriers. The first one is the Blackberry Q25 shipping this month. I have taken the plunge and pre-ordered one. CANNOT WAIT until it gets here! Normally I don't do stuff like this but I figured what the hell and it'll be fun, we'll see. It's an exact model of the Blackberry Classic but upgraded hardware and Android OS. https://www.techradar.com/pro/the-r...sd400-with-passport-and-keyone-to-follow

About 20-25 years ago I needed a new phone. The #5 digit wouldn't work so I couldn't dial a phone number with a 5 in the number. I took it to a kiosk in the mall....I think it was Sprint.
You should have seen the look on the kids face when I took it there. I had it maybe 10-12 years. It was my first cell phone.
That thing looked like a little walkie-talkie. It had this little antennae you could pull up...lol. I'd still have it if the #5 worked.
The kid looked at me with this befuddled look..."That's your cell phone?" It was classic.

My Pixel 6 Pro had a battery a day or so away from exploding, and a broken screen.
It was going to cost about $360 to fix.
I upgraded to a perfect, used, Pixel 8 Pro for $400.
I took the upgrade path.

This is the type of thing that I have been starting to look into. I apologize if this is taking the thread way off on a tangent, but I now I gotta get this off my chest and see what folks on here think. I'm starting to become more and more cognizant of just how addicting these phones can be. I've been taking myself off of social media and starting to use the 'digital health' apps to help me put the phone down... it's something that I recognize within myself that I need to work on. The trouble is, I've integrated my phone into how I work and how I keep some stuff at home running smoothly. I want to keep that but cut the unnecessary stuff out and I started looking into some of these newer "dumbphones".
There is no level of sucking we haven't seen; in fact, I'm pretty sure we hold the patents on a few levels of sucking NOBODY had seen until the past few years.

I simply never use my phone for any other purpose than calls and texts. The only exception would be the GPS function. Isolating my phone uses to those functions prevents any of the issues I see many people having.
As it pertains to the thread itself I have an iPhone. Not so much as it was a preference but because of cost. I really like my carrier, Verizon. I have no plans to change carriers. As such they gave me the option of upgrading my phone to an iPhone for $100 and I was long past due for a new phone. I couldn't even buy a cheap phone for less than that. So it was more about need and opportunity intersecting than anything else.

I consistently use mine for navigation and looking up information, but I haven't allowed a social media app to be installed on my phone since around 2009/10. They are far too intrusive and anti-privacy.... notice how words like "Spyware" aren't in the daily lexicon anymore? That's not an accident, because *everything* is Spyware now. Between forcing myself to only be able to access social media via a browser and the social media sites trying to discourage using a browser by limiting capabilities of the browser app on mobile devices, I do a fairly good job of staying off it on the phone. Unfortunately, I sit a a laptop all day, so using Facespace on there is still a normal occurrence.
My current phone is from 2018 (Galaxy S9) and while I'd like something with fewer cracks in the screen and all that, it's still going strong. I just put a new battery in it earlier this spring and I see no reason to replace it. What I *am* considering, however, is dumping Verizon for Mint Mobile.

3, maybe 4 years ago, my phone wouldn't charge. Couldn't figure anything out, so I decided to get a new phone. Walked in, told the guy what was going on, and he looked at my phone, then at me, then my phone again and said "Is this an Iphone4?" Yes, it was.
Got a 12 that day. Ironically, a week later, just for fun, I plugged my 4 in, and it charged. That 4 had been my son's first Iphone, then it went to my wife, then to me when verizon told me my flip phone wouldn't work any more.

Going back to carriers...I have Verison. I went with them after being with Sprint.
No contracts anymore. They hate that. Any new phone, I just pay for the darn thing.
I view phones as phones. Talk and text is about it. I don't watch many vids or anything like that. You have to have it for tickets these days. I like the GPS features when traveling and I also have Sirus XM for travel. I got it because when traveling up to Cleveland you hit a lot of dead places in Ky. or all you can get is the Gospel Preacher stations.
I don't like having to constantly seek radio stations and don't like listening to CD's in full, so you have to change them.

Itunes put all your cds on it. Play all songs shuffle I may have some old CD's in a box somewhere. I haven't inserted a cd into a player in maybe 7 years. iTunes is like a foreign language to me. Have never used it. I like Sirius radio. Just program the genres I like and listen as long as I want. I'd have to have 30,000 CD's to listen to what I like and what I have never heard before, not to mention all the news and talk programming.

I have about 5,000 songs mostly from cd's and a lot purchased in itunes store. They are stored in the cloud so they dont take up storage on my devices. I can play them from my phone or my ipads or my computer. I am sure I could play them from my car , If I had a car.
