Bieber makes sense, Kwan not so much IMO

Forgive me if I'm posting in ignorance (I don't follow baseball super closely... only even remotely care about the Guardians), but wouldn't this be indicative of a firesale?

Cleveland seems to operate in cycles.... they load up on young talent and try to piece together a playoff roster given their budget constraints. Sometimes it works, and sometimes it doesn't (gotta have enough quality players but also have to assemble those players into a complete roster). When it looks like the roster isn't moving in the right direction on a good enough schedule, they get what they can for the pieces they have, and start anew.

I was worried moving Kwan might be the sign that they're working on rebuilding the roster again.

There is no level of sucking we haven't seen; in fact, I'm pretty sure we hold the patents on a few levels of sucking NOBODY had seen until the past few years.

Their careers are over. Looking forward (then again, maybe not) to hearing the finding from the investigation.

It would be nauseating if Clase's case involves his pitching in the playoffs last year.

You think so? Maybe Ortiz because he hasn't done much yet, but I think Clase finds a home or plays here again. I guess I am thinking through the lens of football (Calvin Ridley) and I think the Pete Rose issue is a bit antiquated. So I'd expect them to not not be banned from the sport. We shall see.

If they bet on themselves, especially if they bet against themselves, they should be banned. I would fully support the ban. Recently in the NBA there was a player that bet against himself in prop bets and got banned. I believe baseball will follow suit.

I do think they are given lifetime bans (assuming any wrongdoing is found). NFL has been more lenient than baseball.

MLB has already banned a player for life for betting on his team. He was injured and at home.

Rule 21d(2) in the MLB handbook states: “Any player, umpire or club or league official or employee who shall bet any sum whatsoever upon any baseball game in connection with which the bettor has a duty to perform, shall be declared permanently ineligible.”

Here's Zack Meisel on Casket and Phelpzzz.

Kayfus was a fast riser this year. Lots of Manzardo and Kayfus. Very little of Santana please.

I’m sure Kayfus will play some RF.

Man, I hope the team can work out a long term deal with Kwan. The city absolutely loves him.

Kwan should definitely be a Guard for his career

Guardians take game 2 from the Mets ....... go for the sweep tomorrow. Now 7 behind the Tigers, as they continue to slide.

It was funny peeekiing in on CBSsports's tracker ..... they had Nimmo from the Mets as the current batter for probably 7 innings. (and for both teams) Weird.

Gavin Williams had a no hitter into the ninth with one out. Soto breaks it up with a homer to dead center. Guards get the sweep though by winning 4-1.

It isn't over. It varies by teams but there are still around 45 games in the season. In golf you see 2 stroke swings on a hole all the time.

I am not saying it will be easy, but gaining 6 games on the Tigers the rest of the way isn't out of the question.

In baseball, the old saying is every team will win around 60 games and lose 60 games. The other 42 games is what makes the difference.

It probably won't turn over a week, but it could over 5-6 weeks.

We still play the Tigers 6 times. This thing isn't over by a longshot.

If I were Martinez, I would be calling Kenny Lofton for advice. He should have caught that ball.

Guards are rolling. Detroit loses. Only 5 back now in the division.

Kayfus making his presence felt in the lineup. He can hit the ball.

Trading Caminero may go down as one of the all time blunders by the Cleveland FO. He was a highly touted hitting prospect at that time. This must eat at Antonetti.

Guardians release Carlos Santana: Will a contender will pick up 16-year MLB veteran for stretch run?

Santana, 39, has not hit well this season and the Guards let him go to free up playing time for others

The Cleveland Guardians have released longtime first baseman Carlos Santana, the team announced on Thursday. In a corresponding move, the Guardians reinstated utility player Daniel Schneemann from the paternity list to take the 26-player roster spot vacated by Santana.

Santana, 39, was likely to depart the organization one way or another this week. A few days back, the Guardians placed him on outright waivers, likely hoping that another team would claim him for two reasons: 1) to give him a better chance at making the playoffs; and 2) to free them of their remaining financial obligations. No team claimed Santana, and so now he'll head to free agency hoping to latch on elsewhere. The Guardians, for their part, remain responsible for what remains on his $12 million salary, meaning that they receive no financial benefit from this transaction.

Where the Guardians do benefit is in the resolution of an unoptimized roster. Prior to Santana's release, he was one of five corner/DH players that manager Stephen Vogt had to juggle between first base, DH, and right field. (The others being Kyle Manzardo, David Fry, CJ Kayfus, and Nolan Jones.) With Santana out of the picture, Vogt's job gets easier, and can become more about finding solutions that can benefit the Guardians for the rest of this season and beyond.

Santana may well be at the end of his 16-season big-league career. (It's worth noting that 11 of those seasons came as a member of the Guardians.) In 116 games this year, he hit .225/.316/.333 (81 OPS+) with 11 home runs. His contributions were worth an estimated 1.3 Wins Above Replacement, according to Baseball-Reference. Most of his value came on the defensive side, however, and it's unclear if contenders will desire a glove-only first baseman. Santana would need to be on a team's roster by 11:59 p.m. ET on Sunday (Aug. 31) to be eligible for the postseason.

The Guardians have fallen to five games back of the American League's third wild card spot after a recent downturn that has seen them go 3-9 in their last 12 games.
