Sanders needs consoling after being benched, was he crying- he drifted back MANY times a known weakness, he fumbled/ or nearly so- he showed he's a 5th RD talent-- Huntley more talented than he- JMHO, could easily be cut.

- Was a little disappointed the starters could muster only one scoring drive against L.A.'s backups. - Flacco with a nice TD throw to Fannin - Hopkins should be released, I'm not convinced he will be though. - Gabriel looked good. Did a nice job moving the team up and down the field. He missed an opportunity when he tried to squeeze the ball into Thrash on the TD. - Schwesinger continuing to be very impressive. - The depth in the secondary is quite concerning. - Be interesting to see if the Browns keep Carter or Larvadain. I think they keep Carter and put Larvadain on the practice squad. - Sanders may have peaked against the Panthers' grocery store clerks. The drifting and taking and unnecessary were the same things said about him in college. - Sanders body language and demeanor were inexcusably poor. Tony Brown tried to cheer him up after the browns actually won the game but he kept moping around. - Adin Huntington continued making a strong case for a roster spot on the 53. - Harden has to catch the ball for an INT.
SS played poorly. Not much help around him, but don't blame them. Lot of the struggles and fails were self-inflicted. Took sacks, struggled with reads, and mentally collapsed. Second half looked like a tantrum after we gave them the ball back on drives with no points. Obviously our announcer couldn't shut up about him during halftime and into second half until he was pulled. Inane number of attempts to blow up rookie QB controversy he seemed to insist on. Endless. We could have talked about Joe Cool's success. Solid performance. Gabriel really played well. Defense was chat worthy. Sanders is bottom of depth chart in my view. We went 3-0 pre. We have cutdown coming. We need some positions shopped and some folks chopped. Good luck, Browns! I believe ditching Camp Cupcake has resulted in success; we look more game-ready.

I hate to say things base on the preseason since it's just very generic playcalling that creates an illusion. That being said,
Flacco looks relaxed and ready to kick some arse. Fanning did terrible at blocking but amazing as a receiver. Run game looked putrid.
DG looked efficient and more calm and moved the ball. I don't think he is ready to start but he is fine as the backup.
SS definitely regressed into his old bad habits. I am also pretty sure he was still hurt which affected the accuracy of his throws. What saddens me is that I saw him making good mental progress before this game but he made himself look why he fell to the 5th ... slow decision making and taking way too long to throw the football. He clearly needs more time to get rid of those bad habits. He is nowhere near ready to be the starter and handed the back up to DG for the year most likely.
Schwesinger looks more and more like the steal of the draft!!! That kid is ON FIRE!!! He will be a starter for a LOOOOONG time to come.

What is obvious is SS has trouble reading a D and frankly, I don't think he has command of the playbook. It doesn't look like he knows where the receivers go on a play. He knows the #1 guy. If that guy isn't open quickly he has to spend too much time searching for another option.
Another thing that is obvious is it doesn't bode well for a players development if his Dad has been his coach his whole life.
And one other thing...Huntley had no problem getting us in to FG position, playing with the same player Sanders was.

Retreating in the pocket. Holding the ball. He had 11 drop backs and five sacks. Clearly, holding the ball.
I hope Sheduer works on it and gets better. He can play but he is a fifth round pick. He is not going to start any time soon. Coaches are preparing to begin the season. It is not all about Sheduer.
I haven’t t seen any of the game, but from what I’ve read, he needs to stop whining, moping around the sideline like a high school kid. His dad was a great player, we aren’t sure he is.

Hopefully you can see it so you can draw your own conclusions. I will say he did have a ton of pressure on him in most drop backs. Some of them he should have moved up in the pocket and gotten rid of the ball. Other times he had time and failed to throw the ball. One play he ran straight backwards for a huge loss. I just love all the idiots who think Sanders will land on another team if he is cut from the Browns. No one else wanted him. After a game today where he completely regressed into the bad habbits that made him fall in the draft I don't think any other team is desperate enough to sign a back up QB where they have to deal with all his idiotic fanatics. Sanders is very much at risk of being Tim Tebowed out of the league.

I've been wanting to bring this up since this whole the Browns are ruining him thing started a couple weeks ago.
Sanders played under his father his whole life. Played at Jacksonville State then Colorado. 1 system
Gabriel played college ball at Central Florida, Oklahoma, and Oregon. 3 different systems.
There is a reason why Gabriel was getting snaps with the 1st-2nd team in practices (I'm not adding talent and performance into this). He's had way more experiences running different offenses. He's played at top tier colleges, playing against top tier teams. His experience (w/ the playbook, formations, reading, etc.) is one of the main reasons he's getting these reps.
Having Sanders on a separate field is for bring him along slowly to learn many of different things (i.e. fundamentals, playbook, reads, etc.). It's not b/c they want to ruin his career or separating him b/c they hate him. That is just plain dumb.
I would like to see Shedeur succeed also and Dillon for that matter. The thing I don't understand is how he could look so good against Carolina and so bad yesterday. It looked like 2 entirely different QB's. Right now you would have to put him 5th on the QB list behind Huntley. Not good.

Bottom line on Sanders is we will keep him to start the season. I don't think we will be able to slide him through to the PS. That being the case, he has some trade value if we decide to go that route. Personally, I don't like the guy but wouldn't give up on him based on one crap performance. It's not like he doesn't have talent. His problem is he is immature. He hasn't had much of a challenge with his Dad being his coach since he was a kid. I don't know if that can be coached out of him or not.
Some may call it setting him up for failure. I call it trying to coach him up to being mentally able to face the rigors of the NFL, but setting him up for failure? No, that is an excuse. Huntley went in and moved the same group of players.
Yes, Huntley is a vet. It just proves that Sanders has a way to go and isn't ready for the mental challenges of playing QB in the NFL. He needs to suck it up and toughen up. It wasn't a good look when it looked like he was going to walk off the field.

I have not seen the game or highlights yet. First and foremost - it's preseason. So good performances mean little. And while running a very bland and vanilla offense - most of the offense whether good or bad, means little too.
With that said - it does sound like SS had a particularly bad game. And while anyone who posts should no I am no Stefanki fan - the idea or even suggestion that he (or the organization) somehow drafted SS and are now 4 months later actively contriving to set him up to fail .... is really tragically, spectacularly asinine. It's unfortunate that anyone would bring race into this - but sadly I read a lot of comments online that certainly read like they support SS for one primary reason and then flip that to criticize the Browns or other fans who critique Sanders. A poster above (Lamp?) highlighted the experience of SS vs Gabriel - the talent they faced, the varied (or singular) offense they have run.... There are very reasonable explanations for some of Sander's struggles after half a training camp and 2 pre-season games. It's not a nail in the coffin for him, in many ways it should be expected. And I don't need to spend more time reading or commentating on our 5th round pick sho is struggling. It's enough to say I hope he improves, much like I hope all the young talent does.
Edit - I should add, of all of it I am possibly most excited about Schwesinger (do we have a universal nickname for him yet?) ... I've coveted a dominating ILB for a decade and been left totally uninspired by our LB core (with the exception of JOK) forever. The D might get tired in some games from a lack of offensive time of possession but they should also be much fun to watch assuming we see limited injuries.

First, for anyone bringing race into this, both of the first two picks in the 2023 NFL draft were black QB's. The first pick in the 2024 draft was a black QB. Being black has nothing to do with this. Second, nobody spends draft capital on a college player in the draft only to sabotage his success. Both of those claims are moronic.
The only thing I've seen as it pertains to what was going on downfield is the shot of the two WR's that were open on that one play posted in this thread. They were both open as it pertains to "the NFL window". Throws that NFL QB's are expected to make. SS didn't not make that throw. Instead he held onto the ball. I can't say whether that was the way it went for his entire time playing yesterday because as I said, I couldn't see what was going on downfield.
His drifting back trying to "make something happen" is cause for concern to say the least. I understand that as a competitor you always want to make a positive play for your team. That's only natural. The thing is as a professional athlete you have to do the smart thing and not the instinctual thing.
One thing that stuck out in my mind was a comment Andrew Berry made when he was in the booth. He said, and I'm paraphrasing here, that the system Sheduer was coming from was like speaking fluent English and now he had to learn Mandarin. That indicates there's a huge learning curve involved here.
I'm certainly not saying the kid doesn't have raw talent. He certainly does. But he is far from ready for the NFL game.
BTW Flo, Berry is a black guy too. I know he's not some rando from the internet or a friend of yours. Unlike them he's actually an NFL GM.
The 2 minute drill led by Gabrielle was a thing of beauty. It required clock management, throws placed in NFL windows and poise. None of which looked too big for Gabriele. You want to finish those drives without giving your opponent time left on the clock to come back and score. That too was done with precision.
To keep things in context this was only a preseason game. It has no bearing on the development or long term careers of either one of these kids. It's just the beginning of their journey. But it was certainly a window with which to see where their starting points currently are.

I actually looked up the first round NFL draft for the last 10 years because some Facebook "experts" were claiming the entire NFL, not just the Browns, were racist and did not want black QBs.
Info I found from 2016-2025 drafts 1st rounds?
4 times, including the immediate past 3 years, a black QB was the number 1 overall pick.
In the 1st round all 32 picks each year, there were a combined 15 black QBs selected (the 15 number includes the 4 #1 overall choices)
If I had more ambition I could have added more by looking at all rounds as one name that popped in the 3rd round one year was Jacoby Brisset. Anyway, just thought I would share the data. Some the names I had forgotten.

He is accurate. He can move.
He has skills. He also has lots to work on. He has to take advantage of the learning opportunity. Not dwell on the negative that he is not the starter.
Yea, the All-22 was interesting to see regarding Gabriel and Sanders.
Gabriel - decisive in his throws, though 1 or 2 were ok reads, but had a better option in front of him - quick reads, ball is out - pocket movement was solid - ball placement was solid, except for one outside route thrown a little high, one that should've been on the outside shoulder, and one that was tipped at the line
Sanders - QB drops on a few were really deep, maybe it was designed that way(?) however, made it difficult on the Tackles as the DE's just had to go upfield instead of crashing. An example, he's in shotgun 7 step drop and he's another 10 yards deep (not counting the already the distance from being in shotgun) - adding to the first comment, there were pockets available to him, however he really couldn't step up b/c his initial drop was so deep - reads / decisions weren't very quick, there were options available. He didn't seem to trust his reads or he just didn't see them.
He played behind the same OL Gabriel did, at least for part of his time in. (and Gabriel drove the team to a score right before the half)
Sanders could have been a bit rusty, and that's fine ..... but man he was slow in his reads. He kind of reminded me of Brady Quinn playing well against the worst defense in the NFL in his 1st start ..... then he fell apart from there.
Hopefully Sanders really bears down and studies his butt off, so he sees the field better in his next opportunity.

I think it needs to be said, one of the toughest things that need to be improved is SS's own mental toughness. His raw emotion we saw as he sulked walking the sideline said a lot to me about his not handling frustration with his play and poor production and just inept performance. He did have four or five shots, the rock in his hand, and he failed to bear down and bear up under the pressure. His reps went from bad to worse, sacks, and the rest. Humble up, own it, and learn some more. Looked like he had a LOT of upside. He does need to apply himself better than what produced this. Has a number of things to prove, but he will be working uphill IMO

I won’t pretend to have special insight into his psyche, and one sideline moment as a rookie shouldn’t define him, but he’s an adult. Bard, I gotta ask, did DG not look better, eye-test wise, then Prime Time’s little fella?
I believe so, Lamp. Seemed focused, saw the field as needed. I thought he looked crisp and moved us. I think for the most part he was on time. Showed some focus and mental toughness IMO. Not sure that by comparison DG didna look game ready. I am not a QB guru, but I felt better with DG after seeing this game and the Iggles. He needs reps; SS needs more reps.

Living in Duck country I hate watch them a fair amount each season. Know your enemy. I’m not a fan of their fans, they, along with the never ending costume changes, drove me to become an OSU Beaver ‘fan’. That said I did watch a fair amount of Dillon’s play this past season. You can tell he’s played a lot of football. He’s decisive. What I noticed in the two Buckeye matchup’s was, in the first game he managed to extend plays and escape the pocket. He cooked when doing so. In the second game the Buck’s did a much better job of containing him and collapsing the pocket into his face. Essentially using his height against him. If the interior of the Brown’s line can give him space, the kid can sling it.
