IMO they wanted Pickett to be the starter.

I don't know if this was the case. I think they liked Pickett because he was cheap to have on the roster and cheap to acquire. Plus he started a ton of games in his career and that means something to teams. What changed everything was drafting two quarterbacks. I don't think they expected to do that.

If Pickett was intended to be the starter, then why sign Flacco?

Obviously, I don't have anything definitive to back this up but it is my guess that the Browns wanted Pickett to be QB2 while they tried to work out a deal with ATL for Cousins. Then they would have had him, Pickett to back him up and then potentially a draft pick if one they liked fell to them or, if one is inclined to think based on where Gabriel was selected, reach for one. Once Cousins wasn't going to happen, they immediately pivoted to Flacco.

But that's just me.

If that doesn't define ineptness in addressing the QB position, I dont know what does.
Yet some still think Andrew Berry can turn this franchise around .
Having Kenny Pickett around for the summer did nothing to improve
The team. He is on 4th team in 2 years for a reason

LMAO

We replaced DTR and Winston with Flacco, Dillon, and Sanders. That my friend IS improvement.

Agreed. AB and FO have done a lot to improve our roster since our last game in January. I think there is a lot of potential with our younger and new players. We have a tough schedule to deal with and the ongoing recovery from the Watson fiasco. Considering what a disaster that’s been I don’t think we’re doing too bad but it will be hanging over our heads for the foreseeable future.

Young vet versus old vet.

They traded for Pickett first. They scouted him when he was in the draft. He was a first round pick who got stuck behind a poor OC and never had a chance. The feeling was he could turn out like Darnold.

Joe was known. He had been a backup. They knew he could fill that role. Then in drafting DG they would not be forced to play him.

The plan was sound. It just did not work out.

I really have no idea what their "plan" was in regards to Pckett and Flacco. But I have an opinion just as you do. Nothing to back it up just they way I see it from my perspective.

I believe they brought in two veterans with a lot of starting experience for one reason only. I think the intent there was to let those veterans fight it out for the staring spot and may the best man win. That would in turn leave them with a backup who was a veteran with a lot of staring experience. As to who who that staring spot I think they felt was six of one and a half dozen of the other.

But as you said, that scenario simply didn't play out due to injury. DG played well. Better than most every Browns fan and even better than this FO and coaching staff may have thought he could. That's the thing about "plans". You base your plans on the situation at hand. When that situation changes then so to do your plans. There's on old saying. "If you want to hear God laugh tell him your plans." I'm fully convinced just how accurate that old saying is.

That's why often times your contingency plans end up being the plan after all is said and done.

Intoducing for The Cleveland Browns, Quarterback Deshawn "The Predator" Watson. He will also be the one to choose your next head coach.

According to Mary Cay, Aditi, and other Browns media they felt Pickett was the plan as starter as camp began. Two things modified the plan from early on. When the Browns drafted Gabriel. I believe they felt Pickett, Flacco, Gabriel and a camp arm was the plan. When Sanders fell. The value was too good for his potential to pass up that changed the initial plans. Going into camp was Pickett and Flacco battling for day 1 starter. Then any of the QB's were potential trade candidates because bottom line was next year's starter is not currently on the team. As soon as the Jax trade was made getting a QB in 2026 was/is the plan and Flacco/Gabriel/Sanders are not going to change that plan now.

Flacco was the "break glass in case of emergency" signing. Pickett got injured and neither Gabriel or Shedeur are ready to take over as the starter.
