Thomas added to Pro Bowl roster
Zac Jackson, Staff Writer
01.08.2008

Another Cleveland Brown is making Hawaiian reservations.

Rookie left tackle Joe Thomas was named to the AFC Pro Bowl team Tuesday. Thomas was chosen as a first alternate last month and was named to the team when Jason Peters of Buffalo dropped out due to injury.

"I am thrilled to be selected for the Pro Bowl and for the opportunity to play with some of the best players in the NFL," Thomas said. "I understand that being selected as an alternate means that someone else could not attend, so I wish the best for Jason Peters. But this is truly an honor and I will do my best to represent the Browns and the AFC in Hawaii."

Thomas joins teammates Braylon Edwards and Joshua Cribbs as Pro Bowlers. Three others -- Eric Steinbach, Derek Anderson and Kellen Winslow -- remain first alternates.

Thomas becomes the first Browns' offensive lineman to make the Pro Bowl since Cody Risien20 years ago, following the 1987 season. He's the first Browns' left tackle to be named to the game since Doug Dieken following the 1980 season, and the first Browns rookie to go since Chip Banks following the 1982 season.

The third overall pick in the 2007 NFL Draft, Thomas started all 16 games of his rookie season and was a key part of a Browns' offensive line that allowed just 19 sacks all season and paved the way for Jamal Lewis' 1,304 rushing yards.

"Going to the Pro Bowl is a well-deserved honor for Joe," Browns general manager Phil Savage said. "He had an impressive rookie season and we only expect him to get better in the future."

Good for Joe!!

If the pro bowl was based on "talent" instead of a popularity contest, he would have been there in the first place!

Intoducing for The Cleveland Browns, Quarterback Deshawn "The Predator" Watson. He will also be the one to choose your next head coach.

Agreed. I don't want them to actually PLAY in the game. I just want them to get the accolades. Injuries, ya know?

And a long drive to Canton begins

Congrats Joe, well deserved and then some.

A Rookie Pro Bowl Left Tackle.... and he is a Cleveland Brown.

Ummmm... what? Peterson missed two. He may have only STARTED 9 games, but that makes his accomplishment even more impressive. Don't knock on All Day, the man was absolutely phenomenal and will be a Top 5 back for his entire career. He deserved it and Joe deserved it, but only one can get it.

That said, I think Joe (and all of us for that matter) should be happy with the title PRO BOWL ROOKIE LEFT TACKLE!!! CONGRATS JOE!!!

Great news!

What an honor for a rookie LT to make it to the Pro Bowl.

I do agree he should have been there to begin with, but to have three Browns there, tells us about things to come.

Cribbs, Edwards, and Thomas!

These guys are puppies in the NFL!

When is the last time that we had three players sent to the Pro Bowl......just curious!

I think Joe deserved to go. He had a great year. As some of you know, I was very high on him, but he even exceeded my expectations. His footwork, agility, technique, strength, combined w/a bit of a mean streak make him the ideal LT. I really feel that he is going to be the best LT in the NFL......and that time is going to come sooner than most people think.

It is....the sad thing is if a qb drops out, DA goes...then the talk will be about how he really didn't make the squad.

LOL.......either that, or BQ should go instead of DA.........because we all know he has a better arm; is more accurate; checks down better; and could have put up way better numbers than DA did.

Hell, remember some people actually preferred Levi Brown over Joe?

I remember a lot of "trade down, stockpile picks and get Levi Brown'...but I don't recall any posters touting Levi over Joe...but then again, I wouldn't doubt if some did.

Well.........there was an article that stated that some scouts thought Levi was a better prospect than Joe. No names, just idle speculation. Of course, a few of the Anti-Joe crowd ran w/that one.

But.......we got our man and I don't think anyone is disappointed w/the choice now. The guy can really play the game. I think what amazed me the most was how he wasn't fooled when teams tried to confuse him w/complex schemes. I think he handled that for a couple of reasons. One---he is very intelligent, and two---his technique is so good that he really never gets his body in a bad position. He really maintains a good foundation and is never off balance.

Easy Vers, your going back to the "Browns chat" times.

They also said we should take Ted Guinn Jr. because he fast!

Troy Smith because he was a winner.

Levi Browns because he is a "mauler".

Calvin Johnson because he was "the best player in the draft" (A crock).

So needless to say Phil Savage does his homework.

I was ont he Steelers board and the question was posed.

"How did the Browns O-line get better than the steelers?"

The post that stuck out in my mind was...

"Simple, they drafted the best Left Tackle to ever come out of college in Joe THomas."

While that has yet to be seen...thats from a stooler fan.

Explain how it's a popularity contest again: The voting only contains 33% fan voting. You're saying the popularity contest continues when it comes to coaches and players -- who comprise 66% of the vote?

Everyone knows I love Big Joe, the stud of all studs. I wanted him as soon as I watched him play in the Badgers' bowl game last winter.
Congrats, #73.

Well...Jonathan Ogden made it over Joe to name an example. I believe it's just a popularity contest with the fans and with the coaches and players I think they just put in the person who they feel career-wise deserves it the most. That's the only way I can think of putting Ogden over Thomas for the pro bowl.

So, it's a popularity contest where 66% of the vote comes from coaches and players? Ok, gotcha. Ogden wasn't even on the radar until players and coaches voted. We all remember how Steinbach was a leading candidate after the fan vote was tallied and we know where he ended up.

Normally when someone says "popularity contest", the definition in itself refers to the populous, the people -- not the brass. So, what you're saying is that only reason Ogden made it is because he is "popular" amongst the coaches and players -- his peers, those who play against him week in, week out.

A majority of coaches and players must have felt Odgen deserved it -- the same way they felt Cribbs deserved it when, I'll remind you, the public did not. Wes Welker, anyone?

x2

I thought Joe was one of the biggest Pro Bowl snubs in the league, along with Winslow.

Now both of them might be going, Steinbach should keep near his phone if a guard goes down.

I cannot believe how great Joe was this year, he blew me away.

Yes. It is a popularity contest with players and coaches too, especially when most feel that this was Ogden's last year and they did it out of respect for an outstanding career. He certainly didn't earn it this year....he earned respect from players and coaches over time.

There are lots of examples of this type of respect in all sports. It's just the way it is.

As far as Cribbs vs Welker.....I think a lot of Pats fans were stuffing the ballots. Keep in mind...their PUNTER led all AFC punters in fan voting. What? The Pats punter??? Was that, maybe, the least used punter in the history of the NFL? Cribbs earned the right from players and coaches who know better. He didn't get in on ballot stuffing or a long-term name...he got in on his play.

I suppose you could say the Pro-bowl is made up of a combination of guys who have earned it over many years and guys who finally broke out. JT just got caught behind a future HOFer. But he'll be tops on the list for voters from here on out. He's earned that.

Way to see this kid make it, he really falt out earned it!

Finally a good thing, and a break for a hard working player for a change. You just gotta love Thomas, playing his heart out in all 16 regular games. He should have been ROY, but heck I'll settle for a pro bowl birth anyday.

Pats fans stuffing the ballots? Oh yes. That must be it. It couldn't possibly be that the average football fan knows QB's, RB's, and WR's and THATS IT. Do you honestly think the Patriots punter was the lead vote getter because everyone thought he did a good job, or everyone was being a homer? No. The fans were voting for him because, when in doubt, vote for the dude from the best team. Thats how their punter was lead vote getter. Thats how Welker was ahead of Cribbs, because outside of Devin Hester and maybe Dante Hall, the average football fan doesn't know much about kick returners. Unless, of course, they're on your team.

Cribbs rightfully got the nod in the AFC. But I wonder if Leon Williams was the first alternate. If he wasn't, he got robbed, because he had almost as good a year as Cribbs.

Well deserved. Can you imagine how good our Pro Bowl left tackle is going to be in another year or two? He and Steinbach will dominate the left side like no other twosome we've seen.

OK Phil. Time to work your magic on the DL.
