ABC has pulled late-night host Jimmy Kimmel off air indefinitely over comments he made about the shooting of right-wing influencer Charlie Kirk.
"Jimmy Kimmel Live will be pre-empted indefinitely," a spokesperson for the Disney-owned network said in a statement to the BBC.
On Monday night's monologue, Kimmel said the "MAGA gang" was trying to score political points off Kirk's murder.
On Tuesday, a 22-year-old suspect appeared in court charged with aggravated murder over last Wednesday's shooting of the 31-year-old conservative influencer. Representatives for Kimmel did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
Kimmel said in his Monday night monologue: "The Maga Gang desperately trying to characterise this kid who murdered Charlie Kirk as anything other than one of them and doing everything they can to score political points from it."
The late-night host, who has frequently been in the crosshairs of US President Donald Trump, also criticised flags being flown at half staff in honour of Kirk, and mocked the president's reaction to the shooting.
He spliced a clip of the president speaking with reporters about his reaction to Kirk's death, and redirecting to talk about a ballroom being built at the White House.
"He's at the fourth stage of grief," Kimmel said. "Construction. It's demolition, construction.
"This is not how an adult grieves the murder of someone he calls a friend. This is how a four-year-old mourns a gold fish."
Also on Wednesday, the chair of the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), Brendan Carr, said on a podcast that Kimmel's remarks showed "the sickest conduct possible" as he urged Disney to take action.
"[Broadcasters] have a license granted by us at the FCC, and that comes with it an obligation to operate in the public interest," said Carr, a Trump-appointee.
"Look, we can do this the easy way or the hard way. These companies can find ways to change conduct, to take action, frankly, on Kimmel, or, you know, there's going to be additional work for the FCC ahead," Carr told the Benny Show.
He noted that an apology from Kimmel would be a "very reasonable, minimal step".
The ABC announcement came just after one of the biggest owners of TV stations in the US, Nexstar Media, said it would not air Jimmy Kimmel Live! "for the foreseeable future beginning with tonight's show".
Nexstar said on Wednesday evening that the comedian's remarks about Kirk "are offensive and insensitive at a critical time in our national political discourse".
"[W]e do not believe they reflect the spectrum of opinions, views, or values of the local communities in which we are located," said Andrew Alford, president of Nexstar's broadcasting division.
"Continuing to give Mr Kimmel a broadcast platform in the communities we serve is simply not in the public interest at the current time, and we have made the difficult decision to preempt his show in an effort to let cooler heads prevail as we move toward the resumption of respectful, constructive dialogue."
Buh-bye Jimmy. Probably did it on purpose, he was dying a slow death as a comedian. Now he can rise, with tears streaming down his face, and claim martyrdom.
Maybe we can trend toward actual comedy on late night again soon!
Yes, Kimmel's show was suspended for political speech. Not about Charlie Kirk. He said nothing disparaging about Charlie Kirk. He did not condone the murder or death of Charlie Kirk. What he said was about the Republican party and trump. That's why this happened. One of trump's yes men threatened ABC and it all went down.
I disagree with Kimmel's premise but anyone who believes this was about charlie Kirk is fooling themselves..........................
The ABC late-night host’s remarks constituted “the sickest conduct possible,” FCC chair Brendan Carr told right-wing podcaster Benny Johnson on Wednesday. Carr suggested his FCC could move to revoke ABC affiliate licenses as a way to force Disney to punish Kimmel.
“We can do this the easy way or the hard way,” Carr said. “These companies can find ways to change conduct and take actions on Kimmel, or there’s going to be additional work for the FCC ahead.”
And speaking on Fox Wednesday night, Carr suggested broadcasters would see more of this kind of pressure in the future.
“We at the FCC are going to force the public interest obligation. There are broadcasters out there that don’t like it, they can turn in their license in to the FCC,” Carr said. “But that’s our job. Again, we’re making some progress now.”
Notably, Nexstar is seeking Trump administration approval to acquire another big US station group, Tegna. The deal requires the FCC to loosen the government’s limits on broadcast station ownership.
Minutes after Nexstar criticized Kimmel publicly, ABC said the show was being yanked nationwide.
Later in the evening, another big station group, Sinclair, said it had also told ABC that it was preempting Kimmel’s show on its ABC-affiliated stations before the network announced its nationwide decision.
Sinclair, too, has business pending before the Trump administration, and it made a bid for Tegna a day before Nexstar stepped in with its bid. The company announced Wednesday night that it will air a one-hour special tribute to Kirk on Friday night in Kimmel’s usual time slot.
Following ABC’s action to indefinitely pull Kimmel’s show off the air, Sinclair issued a statement saying the late-night host’s suspension “is not enough” and called on the network, the FCC and Kimmel to go further.
“Sinclair will not lift the suspension of Jimmy Kimmel Live! on our stations until formal discussions are held with ABC regarding the network’s commitment to professionalism and accountability,” the company said in its statement. “Regardless of ABC’s plans for the future of the program, Sinclair intends not to return Jimmy Kimmel Live! to our air until we are confident that appropriate steps have been taken to uphold the standards expected of a national broadcast platform.”
Sinclair said it demanded Kimmel directly apologize to the Kirk family and make a “meaningful” donation to Kirk’s family and his organization, Turning Point USA. The FCC’s role
The FCC regulates the public airwaves, including broadcast signals and content. Before Trump appointed Carr to lead the agency, the FCC, for the most part, had taken a hands-off approach to broadcasters’ political content in recent years.
But Carr has taken a broader view of the FCC’s remit to serve the public interest, and has served as a political attack dog for Trump, threatening his perceived enemies in the broadcast media.
“I can’t imagine another time when we’ve had local broadcasters tell a national programmer like Disney that your content no longer meets the needs and the values of our community,” Carr told Fox News’ Sean Hannity on Wednesday. “So this is an important turning point.”
The Center for American Rights, which has previously lodged bias complaints against NBC, ABC and CBS, on Wednesday filed a complaint with the FCC over Kimmel’s comments, writing that “it is no defense to say that Kimmel was engaging in satire or late-night comedy rather than traditional news.”
“ABC’s affiliates need to step up and hold ABC accountable as a network for passing through material that fails to respect the public-interest standard to which they are held,” Daniel Suhr, president of the Center for American Rights, wrote in the complaint. “Disney as ABC’s corporate owner needs to act directly to correct this problem.”
SAG-AFTRA, the actors union, said Wednesday night that it “condemns” the suspension of Kimmel’s show.
“Our society depends on freedom of expression. Suppression of free speech and retaliation for speaking out on significant issues of public concern run counter to the fundamental rights we all rely on,” the union said in its statement.
“The decision to suspend airing Jimmy Kimmel Live! is the type of suppression and retaliation that endangers everyone’s freedoms.”
Kimmel has also been a frequent target of President Trump’s ire. Shortly after CBS announced the cancellation of Stephen Colbert’s late-night talk show — a move Carr publicly celebrated — Trump suggested that “Next up will be an even less talented Jimmy Kimmel.”
The trump administration is using the power of government to control political speech. That's far more worrisome and disgusting than anything Kimmel said. Silencing the opposition is the same thing every dictator has done.

I just thought of something. Didn't Trump specifically say Jimmy Kimmel is next after the Colbert announcement? This was clearly calculated and targeted if so.
Here he is making it obvious that he plans to go after Jimmy Fallon and Seth Meyers...............................
Trump Praises Kimmel Suspension, Targets Seth Meyers & Jimmy Fallon Next: ‘Do It NBC!’
“Great News for America: The ratings challenged Jimmy Kimmel Show is CANCELLED. Congratulations to ABC for finally having the courage to do what had to be done,” wrote Trump, who is on a state visit to England at the moment.
“Kimmel has ZERO talent, and worse ratings than even Colbert, if that’s possible. That leaves Jimmy and Seth, two total losers, on Fake News NBC. Their ratings are also horrible. Do it NBC!!! President DJT.”
Rolling Stone reported in 2023 that members of the Trump administration once complained to Disney, the parent company of ABC which airs Jimmy Kimmel Live!, over the constant Trump barbs. The publication claimed the White House pressured Disney to censor Kimmel's monologues which included any anti-Trump sentiment.
That article hit it in the head. I thought he said something truly awful to warrent this but couldn't find anything. When I found out what was said, I couldn't believe that was it. Welcome to the new age of public censorship. Freedom of speech is now completely dead.
I kinda thought the same thing, but I'm also fine with sending a message that these shows should show a little class. It's not a stand-up routine where nothing is off-limits.
It also seems like the network(s) are taking a convenient exit on a show that's starting to slip... but (tbh) I never found Kimmel to be all that funny.
There is no level of sucking we haven't seen; in fact, I'm pretty sure we hold the patents on a few levels of sucking NOBODY had seen until the past few years.
Do you really believe the message should be sent to not criticize trump or Republicans? And if you believe such a message as that should be sent, shouldn't that be a two way street?
Because if that's true trump himself should be silenced. And no, before some MAGA tries to put their spin on that, not in a violent way. He says and repeats nasty anti democrat rhetoric every day. Or doesn't the leader of the free world hold much more clout than a late night host?

It's crazy how the side that calls everything a conspiracy theory has no problem drumming up their own. One would think, by this standard, the people financing (and losing money on) all this trash should stand there and self-flagellant for fear they may hurt someone's feelings. Let's just ignore every shred of common sense in favor of, yet again, blaming Trump.
Ignore all of this, simple facts that drive the industry, over "Trump made them do it!!".

Perplexity AI:
How much money was Jimmy Kimmel Live! losing?
There is no explicit public data on exactly how much money "Jimmy Kimmel Live!" was losing before its indefinite suspension in September 2025. However, indications are that the show's ratings had been under pressure and declining, contributing to financial challenges. Reports mention that the show was "ratings-challenged," with viewership lower than comparable late-night shows, making it harder for ABC and its affiliates to justify current advertising prices.
By July 2025, "Jimmy Kimmel Live!" was drawing around 1.1 million total viewers per episode, a rather modest number for a national late-night program on a major network. This decline aligns with broader late-night viewership trends and competition from streaming platforms, suggesting revenue from advertising was likely under stress. The combination of political backlash and these ratings concerns may have accelerated the decision to suspend the show. But no concrete figures on losses or specific financial impacts have been publicly disclosed as of now.
Is there evidence of them losing advertising accounts over deflated ratings?
There is evidence that "Jimmy Kimmel Live!" was losing advertising revenue due to declining ratings even before the recent controversy. Available data shows ABC's "Jimmy Kimmel Live!" earned around $46 million in advertising revenue over the 12-month period ending mid-2025, which was down about 16% year-over-year. This decline in ad revenue aligns with falling viewership numbers and reflects wider challenges in late-night TV advertising.
While specific accounts withdrawn due to falling ratings are not detailed publicly, the overall 16% drop in ad revenue suggests some advertisers likely reduced or reallocated their spending. Industry context shows late-night shows have faced growing financial pressure as audience shifts move toward streaming and digital platforms. The show's advertising revenue decline was part of a broader market trend affecting the genre.
This revenue loss, combined with the political backlash and affiliate preemptions, likely contributed to the show's suspensions. However, no large-scale, well-documented advertiser boycott linked solely to ratings deflation has been publicly confirmed.
What did kimmel say about not caring if republicans watch his show?
Jimmy Kimmel made a notable comment about not caring if Republicans watched his show during his monologue after the shooting of conservative activist Charlie Kirk. Kimmel specifically said he did not care if Republicans or the MAGA crowd were viewers of "Jimmy Kimmel Live!" In his remarks, he criticized the GOP and MAGA supporters for attempting to exploit Kirk’s death for political gain and made clear he was not concerned with appealing to them. This stance was part of the larger political context in which Kimmel expressed disdain for what he saw as the divisive and insincere political reactions from Trump allies and conservatives.
He conveyed a blunt message that he was not trying to cater to Republican viewers and that his show and its perspectives would not change to suit them, even as backlash followed and major station groups pulled the show from the air.

So, I guess Trump made Kimmel's show suck? And then when Jimmy takes a crappy show to the next level of low-class and has the depraved indifference to LIE about things he already knows has been proven... and then stick a middle finger in the face of half of America? I guess all those paying the bills should just say "It's okay Jimmy, you seem angry." GTHOH

The news media has been regulated since 1934 by the FCC. Since then, they have always controlled what can and cannot be said over the air.
Ironically, the FCC was created under a Democrat president.
Jimmy Kimmel Off Air: Donald Trump Issues New Warning to TV Networks
President Donald Trump has suggested that networks regularly criticize him should potentially have their licenses taken away.
"They're 97% against, they give me wholly bad publicity... I mean, they're getting a license, I would think maybe their license should be taken away" Trump told reporters on Thursday. "When you have a network and you have evening shows and all they do is hit Trump...They're not allowed to do that."
The president's warning to networks comes hours after ABC announced Wednesday evening that it has suspended Jimmy Kimmel Live! indefinitely following backlash over comments host Jimmy Kimmel made about the fatal shooting of conservative activist Charlie Kirk. The host criticized MAGA figures for politicizing Kirk's death, prompting outrage from conservative activists.
Using the renewal of FCC licenses to control the media narrative runs much deeper than cancel culture but trying to cancel the media this is a narrative he has been promoting since 2012...........
August 2012: Trump says Black journalist Touré, then a co-host of the MSNBC show “The Cycle,” should be “forced to resign” for comments in which Touré uttered a variant of the N-word while arguing that Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney was using racially coded language to try to make President Barack Obama seem frightening. (Touré had apologized before Trump’s demand.)
November 2012: Trump suggests the firing of then-MSNBC host Chris Matthews for saying, on the night of Obama’s victory, that he was “so glad” Hurricane Sandy had occurred, because of its political impact. (Matthews had apologized before Trump’s suggestion.)
December 2012: Trump calls for the firing of Vanity Fair magazine Editor Graydon Carter, with whom he had feuded for years, over what he declares the magazine’s “worst ever issue.”
December 2012: Trump says “Scots should boycott Glenfiddich garbage” because the whisky brand selected Michael Forbes, a farmer who refused to sell his land to make way for a Trump golf course, as “Top Scot” of the year.
March 2013: Trump says, “Everyone should cancel HBO until they fire low life dummy Bill Maher! Get going now and feel good about yourself!”
July 2013: Trump asks people to “boycott & cancel subscriptions” to Rolling Stone magazine because of a cover featuring Boston Marathon terrorist Dzhokhar Tsarnaev.
October 2013: Trump urges “everybody possible” to “cancel their subscription” to New York Magazine over an insulting tweet about Trump’s marriage from Dan Amira, who was online editor at the time.
March 2014: After Trump is left off a CNBC list of the most influential business leaders, he says, “Stupid poll should be canceled—no credibility.”
May 2014: Trump calls for the firing of, or at least an apology from, the person at The Oklahoman newspaper who wrote a headline calling then-Oklahoma City Thunder NBA star Kevin Durant “Mr. Unreliable.” (The newspaper had already apologized.)
June 2014: Trump says people should “Boycott Mexico” until a Marine reservist who was jailed for crossing the border with loaded guns is released from prison. (He was released later in the year.)
April 2015: Trump suggests that conservative writer Jonah Goldberg, then a senior editor of National Review magazine, should be forced to resign for writing that Trump had been “tweeting like a 14-year-old girl” in response to another conservative writer calling Trump a clown. Trump also suggests Fox News anchor Bret Baier should stop having Goldberg on his show.
June 2015: When Spanish-language television network Univision severed its business relationship with Trump after his campaign launch speech, in which he labeled Mexican immigrants as criminals and rapists, Trump tweets, “Anyone who wants strong borders and good trade deals for the US should boycott @Univision.”
July 2015: Trump calls for a boycott of Macy’s after Macy’s discontinued its business dealings with him over those same comments about people from Mexico. Trump also tweets “Great” when someone tells him that people are canceling their Macy’s credit cards.
August 2015: Trump calls for the firing of the late conservative writer and Fox News commentator Charles Krauthammer, a regular Trump critic.
September 2015: After National Review editor Rich Lowry argued on Fox News that rival Republican candidate Carly Fiorina had “cut off (Trump’s) balls with the precision of a surgeon” in a primary debate, Trump says: “Incompetent @RichLowry lost it tonight on @FoxNews. He should not be allowed on TV and the FCC should fine him!” (Lowry responds, “I love how Mr. Anti-PC now wants the FCC to fine me. #pathetic.”)
December 2015: Trump calls for the firing of then-CBS News journalist Sopan Deb and NBC/MSNBC journalist Katy Tur over reporting he disputed about how he handled protesters during a rally speech.
February 2016: Trump says people should “boycott all Apple products” until the company stops fighting a government request to break into the cell phone of a deceased California terrorist.

September 2016: After the Dallas Morning News and Arizona Republic newspapers endorse Hillary Clinton for president and USA Today declares Trump unfit for the office, Trump says, “The people are really smart in cancelling subscriptions to the Dallas & Arizona papers & now USA Today will lose readers! The people get it!”
September 2017: Trump tweets that NFL players and other athletes who don’t stand for the National Anthem should be told, “YOU’RE FIRED.” He says in another tweet, “Fire or suspend!” And at a rally, he says, “Wouldn’t you love to see one of these NFL owners when somebody disrespects our flag to say, ‘Get that son of a bitch off the field right now, out, he’s fired, he’s fired.’ ”
October 2017: Suggesting he could use the power of the state against media entities he dislikes, Trump muses about challenging the broadcast licenses of NBC and other networks over their news coverage. (He again broached the subject of reviewing NBC’s license in September 2018.)
November 2017: Trump calls for a boycott of CNN.
August 2018: Trump tweets, “Many @harleydavidson owners plan to boycott the company if manufacturing moves overseas. Great! Most other companies are coming in our direction, including Harley competitors.”
June 2019: Trump suggests people stop “using or subscribing” to AT&T to pressure the company to make changes at CNN, which it owns.
September 2019: Trump suggests that actress Debra Messing should be fired for calling on a news outlet to publish the names of people attending a Trump fundraiser and for a tweet promoting a church sign that said “a black vote for Trump is mental illness.” (Messing had apologized for the tweet about the church sign.)
January 2020: Trump says The New York Times should fire columnist Paul Krugman, a winner of the Nobel Prize in economics, for having incorrectly predicted a global recession after Trump’s victory in 2016.
May 2020: The day after Twitter appended a fact check link to dishonest Trump claims about mail-in voting, Trump threatens to shut down social media companies: “Republicans feel that Social Media Platforms totally silence conservatives voices. We will strongly regulate, or close them down, before we can ever allow this to happen.”
May 2020: Trump seeks the firing of Chuck Todd, host of NBC’s “Meet the Press,” for the show playing a misleadingly shortened clip of comments by Attorney General William Barr. (Todd apologized, saying it was an inadvertent mistake.) Again broaching the power of the state, Trump tags the accounts of the Federal Communications Commission, which regulates television, and its chairman, Ajit Pai.
In an interview with conservative podcaster Benny Johnson, Carr had suggested the FCC might take action against Kimmel, ABC and Disney over the comedian’s “news distortion.”
“Any license granted by us at the FCC, that comes with it an obligation to operate in the public interest,” the chairman explained.
“You can make a strong argument that this is sort of an intentional effort to mislead the American people, about a very core, fundamental fact, of a very important matter,” Carr said of Kimmel’s remarks about Kirk’s alleged killer.
“Frankly, when you see stuff like this, I mean, look, we can do this the easy way or the hard way,” he continued, teasing that action against Kimmel isn’t taken by ABC or Disney “there’s going to be additional work for the FCC ahead.”

Sinclair, the nation’s largest ABC affiliate group, informed ABC earlier Wednesday that it would not continue to air “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” as a result of the host’s comments.
“Mr. Kimmel’s remarks were inappropriate and deeply insensitive at a critical moment for our country,” Vice Chairman Jason Smith said in a statement. “We believe broadcasters have a responsibility to educate and elevate respectful, constructive dialogue in our communities.”
“We appreciate FCC Chairman Carr’s remarks today and this incident highlights the critical need for the FCC to take immediate regulatory action to address control held over local broadcasters by the big national networks.”
Why are you posting this? Is it because you think it was wrong? If so, then you must think the Kimmel thing is wrong.
IF not, then what is the point of posting it?
It's not that hard, but I'll spell it out for you: I'm just pointing out the never-ending hypocrisy.
And nope, Rosanne made her bed, she breached subject matter in the no-fly-zone, even though it was pretty funny. I mean, at least she apologized though. And at least hers was an actual joke, not someone sobbing on stage doing a poor impression of a comedian.
On Monday night's monologue, Kimmel said the "MAGA gang" was trying to score political points off Kirk's murder.
He said “We hit some new lows over the weekend with the MAGA gang desperately trying to characterize this kid who m***dered Charlie Kirk as anything other than one of them and doing everything they can to score political points from it.”
It was well known at the time the kid wasn't MAGA. Just blatant lies is the problem.
And it was 250 stations complaining to ABC about Kimmel and saying they weren't going to air his show anymore.
For a guy on thin ice due to miserable ratings already, then alienate 250 affiliate stations across the nation to the point they were pulling the show off their broadcast air....See Ya Kimmie

I just thought of something. Didn't Trump specifically say Jimmy Kimmel is next after the Colbert announcement? This was clearly calculated and targeted if so.
Yes, while gloating over Colbert, he said that Kimmel was next.
Then yesterday I think it was, on AF1, he was asked if he told the FCC to go after Kimmel, he of course, didn't answer that directly but went into one of his rants about the FCC being in charge or some such nonsense.

This stuff on any news station should not be allowed. IMO The FCC needs to have more control over cable to aggressively step in and stop these types of comments (by anyone {both sides}who is in the business of "News" or "Opinion News")
Ultimately, her show was not renewed 11 ish months after her comment. (she was not suspended/punished for the remarks either)
I miss him also, but Carson was Brutal on politicians, the times were much different during Carsons years.
I wouldn't call it brutal, but I get your point.
Two differences. Late night comedians kept it a 2 way street and they didn't take themselves seriously.
There is a difference between political humor and political commentary.
Peen, I tried to say something similar to the last part of your response here, but I think you put it much more clearly.
While I don't care much for the optics of a president sending in his FCC chair like a hired thug because it presents a slippery slope for subsequent leaders to follow... as well as (threat of) regulation as the avenue of injecting more decency into media being more of a reflection of where we are vs a fix... it's hard for me to argue against accountability (in any form). I just worry that this is being done selectively... enforcing accountability in a hypocritical manner isn't accountability at all.

FCC's Brendan Carr made this comment at about 1:30 P.M..... “We can do this the easy way or the hard way,”
It was after that before any of these affiliates announced they would no longer air Kimmel.
ABC, Nexstar and Sinclair all have major decisions soon coming before the FCC. For people that can't see what went on here it's because they don't want to see it.

None of them were the head of the FCC who had the direct power over their FCC licenses to broadcast and approving upcoming network deals to broadcast. All at a time when both the two largest affiliate groups as well as the network itself has major rulings coming up soon before the FCC.
The very head of the FCC made the direct threat that "We can do this the easy way or we can do this the hard way."

Trump's top media regulator says 'I don't think this is the last shoe to drop'.
Brendan Carr Targets ‘The View’ As FCC Chairman Continues Regulatory Threats In Aftermath Of Jimmy Kimmel’s Suspension
Claiming that the model “hasn’t worked for a long time,” Trump took aim at Stephen Colbert, whose late-night show was canceled in July, before alleging that “no-talent” Kimmel and “Tonight Show” host Jimmy Fallon would be the next to go.
“Colbert has no talent,” Trump said. “I mean, I could take anybody here, I could go outside on the beautiful streets and pick a couple of people that would do just as well or better. They got higher ratings than he did. He’s got no talent.”
He added: “Fallon has no talent. Kimmel has no talent. They’re next. They’re going to be going. I hear they are going to be going. I don’t know, but I would imagine, because Colbert has better ratings than Kimmel or Fallon.”
For all of those pointing out "but this democratic politician said this and that democratic politician said that."
But please, do go on.
Meh - It's the same but different. Is that your argument? It's the same but this time it was the head of the FCC that made a public statement? ... Sure I sort of get it. But I think it's a bit disingenuous to think that this isn't another case of 'both sides have threatened this crap' .... Not sure what Colbert lost his job for. Not sure if others will lose jobs/license. I agree Trump sating publicly that ABC and others should lose their license it concerning. But. . . what the Dems have said and done in the past is not "nothing" ... With reference to the post above about FB - Biden's admin (and FBI) did put pressure on them / warn them and other SM regarding some Covid info and some Hunter Biden laptop stuff. Again - not nothing but also not "censor Anybody". jmo
The more things change the more they stay the same.
Only one agency holds the power over future deals and licensing on broadcasting. That the FCC.
My post isn't debatable in that regard. Saying it and having the power to act on it are two totally different things. Is that the point you're trying to debate here?
That people who have no power over broadcasting making comments about this verses the people who hold all the power over broadcasting making the threat that "We can do this the easy way or we can do this the hard way" is the same thing?
It's most certainly not.
Intoducing for The Cleveland Browns, Quarterback Deshawn "The Predator" Watson. He will also be the one to choose your next head coach.
The "thug" was re-hired by Biden. The "thug" was confirmed unanimously by the senate.
Quote
President Joe Biden announced his intent to renominate Brendan Carr for Commissioner of the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) in May 2023. The White House praised Carr's focus on expanding affordable, high-speed Internet access to all Americans and highlighted his leadership in the FCC's Connected Care Pilot Program, which supports telehealth services for low-income Americans and veterans. The administration emphasized Carr's extensive FCC experience, including his prior roles as general counsel and staffer before becoming commissioner.
The Senate unanimously confirmed Carr for the new term expiring June 30, 2028, in September 2023. Senator Maria Cantwell (D), Chair of the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation, applauded the confirmation, stressing the importance of a fully equipped FCC ready to prioritize consumer interests, broadband expansion, network security, innovative spectrum policies, and local news strengthening. The Biden administration's re-nomination and the Senate's confirmation reaffirmed confidence in Carr's regulatory leadership despite his conservative stances on some issues.
Now, I've used the term "thug" above, not because I'm shaming you for using it, but because that is the way it appears, and I get it. The bottom line though is that Carr hasn't pulled any punches. BEFORE he was confirmed, he said he would take a more assertive and activist role for the FCC in regulating broadcast media content and holding media companies accountable. Especially concerning biased or irresponsible content. Maybe those on the left hoped that meant censoring Greg Gutfeld??
My opinion? This was a perfect storm brought on by the Kirk assassination and I don't think the results would have been different whether Trump egged him on or not... which, by the way, everyone is assuming happened and speaking as if it as fact... as usual.
That said, I wish we had a president that would filter some of the bs that comes out of his mouth because it has a tendency to come back and bite him. The narrative now is "Trump said he was coming after Kimmel" when he said "I hear Jimmy Kimmel is next" after Colbert was cancelled. It was said in a lighthearted manner as he talked about how he has no skills as a comedian. Presidential? Not in the least. Are his comments the tail wagging the dog? I don't know, quite possibly. But it's funny how conjecture is readily accepted as fact where Trump is concerned.
So, now we have an "activist" FCC director. I don't know if that's bad or good, but let's be honest, the sh*tshow we've watched in all forms of media is clearly out of hand. And like it or not, those granted licenses to use the airwaves have a certain set of criteria to follow that hasn't just been pulled out of thin air by Carr.
As far as Kimmel is concerned. He's despicable and he's not really entertaining. He jumped on a soapbox every night to tell his narrow-minded, dwindling fanbase how terrible the president is. Definitely not much comedy there, more like someone spewing vitriol under the guise of comedy. He got what he deserved and I'm sure ABC was just itching for impetus, clearly seizing the moment when the Kirk comments aired. Which, by the way, many on the inside say he was reprimanded for and urged to walk back, for which he responded with a middle finger.
The dude knew he lied. There was already a mountain of evidence saying the shooter wasn't MAGA when only a molehill was required to guide a normal human into second guessing that language. But "normal human" doesn't apply. He's driven by his hatred of Trump.

I wasn't tracking his history at all, so I appreciate you pointing that out. That said, it also motivated me to educate myself on his history with FCC.
I do want to stress that I actually agree with the majority of your last response, and especially with your overall point.
His history with FCC isn't quite as consistent and altruistic as you make it sound. I'm not going to risk looking like I'm trying to attack Carr because I don't disagree with the decision enough to do so.
I think using this as an example of people being too easily misinformed is a bad one (there are better, 'juicier' examples out there). Did you know that Nexstar is waiting on FCC approval for a merger? I did not until I just read it. I'm sure you can deduce where I'm going with that.
The more I think/read about it, the more I'm convinced this was a convenient/pragmatic exit to a show whose ratings were already slipping, and a business decision. And along those lines, the thing I agree with you the most on is that Kimmel isn't worth all this debate/effort.
There is no level of sucking we haven't seen; in fact, I'm pretty sure we hold the patents on a few levels of sucking NOBODY had seen until the past few years.
The ABC late-night host’s remarks constituted “the sickest conduct possible,” FCC chair Brendan Carr told right-wing podcaster Benny Johnson on Wednesday.
Can someone please tell me what Kimmel said that was so egregious? I finally got a chance to watch the clip. All I saw was Kimmel making fun of trump's response to a question about Kirk.

Both Sinclair and ABC's parent company Disney also have deals in the works that will require FCC approval......
Sinclair is in the process of buying and selling TV stations — all of which require approval from the FCC.
Did Disney have NFL deal in mind when pulling Jimmy Kimmel?
When media companies do deals that require federal approval, it's hard not to think about.
The company has a mega-deal with the NFL that will require regulatory approval from the Trump administration before it can proceed. Kimmel could be a sacrificial lamb.
I didn't do a deep dive on Carr, just enough to see the history of where he came from and what he was (verbally) stood for. I'm not sure about your dive with the FCC, but a ran across a pretty interesting history lesson. I looked because I wanted a little context of the HDTV debacle when the networks screamed for government providing infrastructure so that they could "compete" and then weren't keeping their end of the bargain. Both Bush and then Obama laid down the law for compliance and put their licensing on the line.
Soon after the Kimmel announcement I heard about the merger. This is where I've been most outspoken against Trump from the beginning. Shut your mouth once in a while and find a damned filter. So now, whether he pressured these companies or said absolutely nothing at all to them personally, his reputation and words proceed him. This also gives ABC an out as they also know raised eyebrows and pointed fingers will go straight to Trump.
I guess part of my litmus test is: would companies looking for a mega-merger do anything different knowing the feelings of any president in office? I think the answer is easy.
Another note is that there was pressure for Jimmy to apologize before the suspension. He gave a firm no and said he would "double down on criticisms of Trump supporters". So who knows? Maybe that was his way of pushing his chips into the center of the table as he was ready to watch the final cards fall and walk away? TBH he has seemed nothing short of unhinged, angry and unhappy since the election and may have been ready to self-martyr and walk away?
Trump’s stated promise: ‘Stop all government censorship’ and his free speech Executive Order — First Amendment News 454
Let’s begin with President Donald Trump’s second inaugural address (Jan. 20), if only to contrast it with last week’s condemnation of his lawsuit against J. Ann Selzer, the Des Moines Register, and its parent company Gannett (see also FAN 451, 449 and 436).
Ready? Here it goes:
After years and years of illegal and unconstitutional federal efforts to restrict free expression, I will also sign an executive order to immediately stop all government censorship and bring back free speech to America.
Never again will the immense power of the state be weaponized to persecute political opponents, something I know something about. We will not allow that to happen. It will not happen again. Under my leadership, we will restore fair, equal, and impartial justice under the constitutional rule of law.
Never again! It will not happen again! Stop all government censorship!
And there’s more: When it comes to free speech, all views will be treated with “impartial justice.” Against that promissory note, let us turn to his unprecedented executive order as discussed below. Executive Order: Jan. 20, 2025
By the authority vested in me as President by the Constitution and the laws of the United States of America, and section 301 of title 3, United States Code, it is hereby ordered as follows:
What follows is a brief description of the Executive Order along with some preliminary comments. Section 1. Purpose
This section opens with an attack on the Biden administration’s alleged “trampl[ing of] free speech rights” when it comes to “online platforms.” Such abridgments, it is asserted, were done in the name of combating “misinformation,” “disinformation,” and “malinformation” in order to advance the Biden administration’s “preferred narrative.”
Note at the outset that this section is primarily addressed to reversing the Biden administration’s apparent censorship of online expression. Even so, there is a generalized statement: “Government censorship of speech is intolerable in a free society.”
Keep that in mind when it comes to what is set out in Section 4 below. Section 2. Policy
This section focuses on four commitments: (i) securing free speech rights of all “American[s]”; (ii) mandating that “no [federal] agent engages in or facilitates” abridgments of free speech; (iii) ensuring that no “taxpayer resources” are used to abridge free speech; and (iv) identify and correct any past federal abridgments of free speech.
Unlike Section 1, the explicit focus of this section is not confined to any free speech abridgments committed by the previous administration. The focus is on securing free speech rights of “citizens.” Hence, the policy is directed to an affirmative obligation of the Executive branch to protect free speech rights. The operative action words are “secur[ing],” “ensur[ing],” and “identify[ing].”
Thus, there is a duty to ensure that no federal officers are used or taxpayer dollars expended in violation of the Speech Clause of the First Amendment. Also, unlike Section 1, much of Section 2 applies to all free speech rights and not those confined to social media. There is also a promise to investigate for any and all existing abridgments of free speech committed by “past misconduct by the Federal Government.” Section 3. Ending Censorship of Protected Speech
Like Section 1, this section focuses on the actions of the past administration (i.e., abridgments committed “over the past four years”). This section, unlike section 2, explicitly applies to federal departments and agencies, though it also applies to federal officers, agents and employees. Such agencies and departments must comply with the requirements of Section 2.
The second portion of this section deals with the investigative powers of the attorney general working “in consultation with the heads of executive departments and agencies.” Again, this investigation is confined to wrongs committed by the past administration. Following such investigations, a “report” shall be submitted to the President suggesting “remedial actions.”
Much of this section seems repetitive of what is set out in Section 2, save for the references to federal departments and agencies and the need for investigation followed by a report to the President. Note that under Section 3, remedial action is suggested, whereas under Section 4, per this Executive Order, remedial action against the United States and its officers is prohibited. Section 4. General Provisions
In order to appreciate the import of this clause, it is best to quote the final provision (sub-section (c) it in its entirety (with emphasis added):
This order is not intended to, and does not, create any right or benefit, substantive or procedural, enforceable at law or in equity by any party against the United States, its departments, agencies, or entities, its officers, employees, or agents, or any other person.
The opening provisions of this Section refer to authorizations of grants of executive power. The Order is to be implemented consistent with the “applicable law and subject to the availability of appropriations.”
1. Importantly, While the First Amendment is a prohibition against the federal government and all its officers, this Executive Order:
2. applies to free speech wrongs committed during “the last 4 years” or “past misconduct by the Federal Government” or abridgments occurring “over the last 4 years,” though there is a passing mention of securing the free speech rights of all “American[s].”
Yet even as against such past alleged free speech wrongs, the sole remedy is by way of corrective action taken by the Executive Branch. If such corrective action, or any other actions taken by Executive officials in pursuance of this Executive Order, themselves abridge First Amendment rights, there is no independent remedy secured by the Order.

The flaw in your logic is that Trump had Kimmel removed. He did not. Only Disney could have removed Kimmel and they did. The FCC could fine Disney for allowing the blatant lies Kimmel was telling on air. You have a right to free speech. You do not have a right to inflammatory remarks that could cause harm in any way to another person. That is what Kimmel did. Disney acted appropriately. The FCC also acted appropriately. The left just does not like it because they have operated with free reign for quite some time now.

Can you please quote what "inflammatory remarks that could cause harm in any way to another person"?
I'll help you out. Here is what Kimmel said in regards to the actions of the republican party. None of it involved any comments about Charlie Kirk.........................
We hit some new lows over the weekend with the MAGA gang desperately trying to characterize this kid who murdered Charlie Kirk as anything other than one of them and doing everything they can to score political points from it.
In between the finger-pointing, there was grieving. On Friday, the White House flew the flags at half-staff, which got some criticism, but on a human level, you can see how hard the president is taking this.
He then showed a clip of a reporter asking Trump how he was holding up in the wake of Kirk’s death...................
“I think very good,” Trump replied. “And by the way, right there where you see all the trucks, they just started construction of the new ballroom for the White House, which is something they’ve been trying to get, as you know, for about 150 years, and it’s gonna be a beauty.”
“Yes, he’s at the fourth stage of grief: construction,” Kimmel said. “Demolition, construction. This is not how an adult grieves the murder of someone he called a friend. This is how a 4-year-old mourns a goldfish.”
So please explain how any of that is being disrespectful to charlie Kirk or how any of thrse comments were directed towards charlie Kirk. the only thing those comments could have actually hurt was trump's ego.
Here is what Kimmel actually said about the murder of Kirk and the condolences sent well before the monologue....................
“Instead of the angry finger-pointing, can we just for one day agree that it is horrible and monstrous to shoot another human? On behalf of my family, we send love to the Kirks and to all the children, parents and innocents who fall victim to senseless gun violence,” said Jimmy Kimmel in a post on Instagram.
Nothing even surprising here. Some of these people speak from a standpoint of absolute impunity. She could poop on the House floor and the fine people of New York would applaud.

Exactly the same type of hateful things as trump has been saying for years now and you didn't give a single damn about it?
TDS is sure a tough pill to swallow. Telling lies and speaking about someone who was murdered by one of their own is really disgusting and despicable. Speaks volumes to the nation though.

So you have no response to............ Can you please quote what "inflammatory remarks that could cause harm in any way to another person"? that was your statement that you are now backtracking on.
What did he say where he was "speaking about someone who was murdered" other than to say he was murdered? Where did he say that the shooter was MAGA?
He did none of those things.
He was speaking about trump and the republicans. I know English is your first language so I have no idea how you're been so easily lied to and accepted them as truth this way.

Maybe if Kimmel would have just said mentally ill homeless people should be put to death he would still have a job...................
On Sept. 10, Kilmeade and others were on “Fox & Friends” discussing the fatal stabbing of Iryna Zarutska in Charlotte, North Carolina. The man accused of killing her reportedly suffers from mental illness and was living in a homeless shelter at the time. During this conversation, cohost Lawrence Jones said that unhoused people who refuse treatment for mental illness should “be locked up in jail,” to which Kilmeade replied that they should be subjected to “involuntary lethal injection.”
It seems you're a bit confused. That's what hate looks like.
You do not have a right to inflammatory remarks that could cause harm in any way to another person. That's what these FOX and friends co-hosts did.
You know, it's been 10 years since trump came down the escalator. In all these years the best line of BS you have managed to come up with to try and excuse all of then nasty things trump does and says is to throw up three letters trying to blame those who point it out. TDS. You sound like you're 10

I thought Kimmel went all South Park on his show because I never am up to see it. But then I saw a clip of what he said and that is some pretty lame stuff as far as late night goes. I guess we better be putting on the winter boots because there are snowflakes all around.
Apparently you are outraged because I am stupid Tell me what Kimmel said that makes you mad?
I'm not outraged. I'm not mad. You're confused and trying to paint a picture that doesn't exist.
If all you saw was Kimmel making fun of Trump's response than you missed how he opened the entire show -- which I find very, very hard to believe, but here...
"We hit some new lows over the weekend with the MAGA gang desperately trying to characterize this kid who murdered Charlie Kirk as anything other than one of them and doing everything they can to score political points from it."
MAGA had nothing to do with this, and he knew that full well. Everybody on the planet did at that point, or at least anyone fallowing the story. He purposely LIED to his audience because he wanted to foment hatred and outrage.
That's all he has left, because he knows the scant amount of viewers that still tune in are the very people that stick their fingers in their ears, just like he does, whenever the truth is spoken and it's not convenient. He can't stand to have one waking moment when he isn't using his "platform", as weak as it is, to dispute and marginalize that.
He also knows full well that he proudly represents the most reprehensible of this bunch and likely fantasizes about helping to spring them into further action. That's how despicable he is.

What to know about Brendan Carr, the head of the FCC pbs.org favicon pbs
After Jimmy Kimmel's show was suspended, a key question is: Does the FCC have the power to regulate speech? thefire.org favicon thefire FIRE statement on FCC threat to revoke ABC broadcast license over Jimmy Kimmel remarks about Charlie Kirk
Protesting against Brendan Carr, the FCC chairman, can be done through several approaches:
Public Demonstrations: Organize or join peaceful protests or rallies expressing opposition to his actions and policies, especially related to free speech and media regulation.
Public Awareness: Use social media, write op-eds, or participate in forums to raise awareness about concerns with his conduct as FCC chair, including perceived censorship or government overreach.
Contact Officials: Engage with lawmakers by calling, emailing, or petitioning for oversight or removal if there is strong public concern about his behavior and policies.
Support Affected Media: Back media and personalities targeted or affected by his actions, showcasing solidarity with free speech advocates.
These approaches have been seen in recent public reactions tied to Carr’s involvement in media regulation controversies, such as his role in the suspension of Jimmy Kimmel’s show, which sparked protests and political debate about FCC authority and free speech.
I suggest you do it somewhere other than Portland, it seems Antifa has taken over that city... again... Good luck.

I saw that but do not understand how it qualifies as:

I agree it wasn't a sick comment about the assassination. It was however a blatant pushing of a non truth.
I might have said disgusting rather than sick None the less, it probably wouldn't have mattered since large station owners were going to pull the program from their stations. Advertisers would have jumped ship in a hurry if the show was going to be dropped by 250+ stations around the country.
If everybody had like minds, we would never learn.
I think any joke about anyone's death (or rape, or any number of things) is in poor taste I think using anyone's death (or rape, or any number of things) for political gain is in poor taste

I answered you. You responded that you don't think that should have elicited the reaction from Carr. I don't know what you want from me.
I'm not Carr. I'm not related. I've never met him. I don't have any special access.
And finally, I'm not your monkey. You can like or not like anything you want, just don't sit here thinking someone owes you an explanation for the action of others. You tried to imply that I was outraged and mad, when I never made any post that would even indicate that.
Kimmel lied about the situation, implied that Trump didn't really care, and basically compared Kirk to a goldfish. Seems pretty insensitive to me. Have you kept track of any of the things people have been fired or cancelled for over the last five years or so? Apparently not.
Here's the bottom line: Some people are more worked up about a person losing a job over something he said than they are about a person losing their life about something he said. Says a lot.
You obviously saw this as you referred to my comment about Kimmel making fun of trump's response to a question about Kirk. I was always better in math class than english class but I am pretty sure: "Can someone please tell me what Kimmel said that was so egregious?" constitutes a question.
I initially asked for someone to exeplain what Kimmel said that was so egregious. I wanted to know why so many people are upset/offended You are the one who chose to chime in. And now we are full circle that what was so offensive is that he made fun of trump's response
I agree that using Kirk's death for humor is insensitive But again, insensitive is a long way from sickest conduct possible
I didin't get any goldfish somparison, but that would be offensive
I know others have been cancelled/fired but no I have not kept track I don't know how that is relavent to my original question, but IMO, the more often it happens, the bigger problem it is

‘Dangerous as hell’: Ted Cruz compares FCC chair’s threats against ABC to mob tactics Michael Williams, CNN Fri, September 19, 2025 at 5:28 PM EDT
GOP Sen. Ted Cruz on Friday denounced Federal Communications Commission Chairman Brendan Carr’s threats to pull ABC’s broadcast license as “unbelievably dangerous” and compared some of his rhetoric to “mafioso” tactics.
In an episode of his podcast, “Verdict with Ted Cruz,” released on Friday, the Texas Republican said he was “thrilled” Jimmy Kimmel was pulled off the air by ABC over his comments about conservative influencer Charlie Kirk. But he said he strongly disagreed with the government policing speech, asserting it could come back to bite conservatives when Democrats retake power.
“I hate what Jimmy Kimmel said. I am thrilled that he was fired,” Cruz said. “But let me tell you: If the government gets in the business of saying, ‘We don’t like what you, the media, have said. We’re going to ban you from the airwaves if you don’t say what we like,’ that will end up bad for conservatives.”
Though Carr’s comments have drawn widespread condemnation on the left, Cruz’s remarks represent one of the strongest denunciations of the threats against broadcasters by an elected conservative. Cruz also chairs the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation, which has broad authority over the FCC.
“Going down this road, there will come a time when a Democrat wins again – wins the White House … they will silence us. They will use this power, and they will use it ruthlessly. And that is dangerous,” Cruz said.
Asked later by reporters on Capitol Hill if the Commerce Committee will hold hearings into the matter or investigate Carr if he continues in the same vein, Cruz left the door open to the possibility.
“There’s no doubt the Commerce Committee has oversight, authority and responsibility over the FCC, and when the Democrats had the majority, they did not engage in oversight … We will do our job and engage in oversight.”
President Donald Trump has also vaguely threatened to pull networks’ licenses if they air overwhelmingly negative coverage of him, though Cruz did not rebut the president’s remarks directly on the podcast.
Trump offered praise for Carr when pressed on the scathing remarks from the Texas Republican. “I think Brendan Carr is a great American patriot. So I disagree with Ted Cruz on that,” he said.
The president also continued to lament what he described as “dishonesty” from network broadcasts that are critical of him.
Cruz played recent remarks Carr made on far-right podcaster Benny Johnson’s podcast, in which the FCC chairman threatened to take action against broadcasters who don’t “find ways to change conduct” the government considers disagreeable.
“I mean, look, we can do this the easy way or the hard way,” Carr said. “These companies can find ways to change conduct, to take action, frankly, on Kimmel, or you know, there’s going to be additional work for the FCC ahead.” ABC pulled Kimmel’s show off the air indefinitely the day after Carr made those comments.
Responding to Carr’s comments, Cruz said: “No, no, no, no, no.”
“Look, look, I like Brendan Carr,” the senator said. “He’s a good guy. He’s the chairman of the FCC. I work closely with him. But what he said there is dangerous as hell.”
“He says, ‘We can do this the easy way, or we can do this the hard way.’ And I got to say, that’s right out of ‘Goodfellas.’ That’s right out of a mafioso coming into a bar going, ‘nice bar you have here. It’d be a shame if something happened to it.’”
Cruz later added: “I think it is unbelievably dangerous for government to put itself in the position of saying, ‘We’re going to decide what speech we like and what we don’t, and we’re going to threaten to take you off air if we don’t like what you’re saying.’”
“And it might feel good right now to threaten Jimmy Kimmel,” the senator said. “But when it is used to silence every conservative in America, we will regret it.”
Here's the bottom line: Some people are more worked up about a person losing a job over something he said than they are about a person losing their life about something he said. Says a lot.
1, I think many people on this bord are complex enough to be able to understand that there are 2 separate issues (though in the current situation intertwined) here and be able to discuss them both

This is one of the more absurd things I have read here in a long, long time. He made a direct reference to a current event and showed the contrast in reactions. You pulled some absolute bs out of the sky and shamed him for it. Why would you say that?
I miss him also, but Carson was Brutal on politicians, the times were much different during Carsons years.
I wouldn't call it brutal, but I get your point.
Two differences. Late night comedians kept it a 2 way street and they didn't take themselves seriously.
There is a difference between political humor and political commentary.
Where is the line drawn between humor and commentary? From what I see, Trump gets his panties in a twist no matter what you call it. NOT once in my life has a late night TV host been threatened by the White House inhabitants.
On top of that, Hegseth just told reporters at the Pentagon they must obey the rule of only reporting stories they tell you can report or risk losing their credentials.
How many rights being taken away does it take for you to say, ENOUGH? Maybe he'll hit something you hold dear soon... Then, maybe?
Pardon while I go do some light reading,, I'm thinking the Bill of Rights might be fun...... Since it seems to be taking a beating today!

Since this has apparently become a hot topic - I'll offer my 2 cents.
I think you are wrong. I don't see anyone getting more worked up about a person losing their job compared to someone losing their life. Period. I think you have drawn an incorrect conclusion. I'll leave it there. If you think you see a specific poster more concerned over someone losing their job than Kirk losing his life - I'd suggest you specifically address that poster and ask them if that is true. When making such a claim I think it'd be important to be specific. jmo
The more things change the more they stay the same.
Here's the bottom line: Some people are more worked up about a person losing a job over something he said than they are about a person losing their life about something he said. Says a lot.
And some, as you can see if you go back to the beginning of this thread, were more concerned in pointing fingers at the trans community, democrats and scoring political points than honoring and mourning Charlie Kirk. Exactly like Kimmel said.
And do you really think this is about Kimmel per se? Because it isn't. It's about abusing the power of the government to control political speech by directly threatening to take away their license to broadcast from those who speak ill of their political opponents. Something only done in countries ran by dictators.

2019 Brendon Carr sounded like a different man than he did after he applied and received his trump loyalty card....................
“Should the government censor speech it doesn’t like? Of course not,” Carr wrote in 2019. “The FCC does not have a roving mandate to police speech in the name of the ‘public interest.’”
Evidently, he was against his standard before he was for it.

“President Biden is right. Political satire is one of the oldest and most important forms of free speech. It challenges those in power while using humor to draw more people in to the discussion. That’s why people in influential positions have always targeted it for censorship.”
I'm not a follower nor fan of Maddow but used this source only to get the quotes by Carr. What happened to this once great Patriot and supporter of the freedom of the press?
Now he's Mr. We Can Do This The Easy Way Or The Hard Way threatening broadcasters for the very thing he supported just a few short years ago.

Man who fired a gun into ABC affiliate office had note to ‘do the next scary thing,’ prosecutors say
Austin/AP Sacramento, California AP — A man suspected of firing a gun into the ABC-affiliated television station in California’s capital had written notes in his car critical of Donald Trump’s administration and a calendar reminder on his fridge to “do the next scary thing,” prosecutors said Monday.
Nobody was hurt in the shooting Friday into the lobby of the studios of KXTV ABC10 near downtown Sacramento. Local authorities arrested Anibal Hernandez Santana, 64, on Friday on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon and shooting into an occupied building. He was released hours later on $200,000 bail.
Hernandez Santana was rearrested Saturday night by the FBI and will also face federal charges related to interfering with a federally licensed station and discharging a firearm within a school zone. His defense attorney, Mark Reichel, said Hernandez Santana would plead not guilty in both cases when he’s arraigned on the federal charges Monday afternoon and in state court on Tuesday.
Sacramento County District Attorney Thien Ho said investigators found a calendar note on Hernandez Santana’s refrigerator stating “Do the next scary thing” and dated Sept. 19, the day of the shooting.
A search of the suspect’s car turned up an anti-Trump book, Ho said Monday. Authorities also found a handwritten note which said “For hiding Epstein and ignoring red flags,” Ho said. The note mentioned FBI Director Kash Patel, FBI Deputy Director Dan Bongino and Attorney General Pam Bondi, saying they were “next,” prosecutors said.
Evidence points to a politically motivated crime and “it appears that he was also looking at other places, other people,” Ho said. But he didn’t say why prosecutors believe Hernandez Santana targeted the ABC affiliate specifically or whether it might have been related to ABC’s suspension of late-night talk show host Jimmy Kimmel over comments made about Charlie Kirk’s assassination.
ABC10 is an affiliate of ABC but not owned by the network. It is owned by Tegna. It is also an affiliate of CNN.
The district attorney said his office will seek to hold Hernandez Santana with no bail.
Sinclair won't broadcast Kimmel's show despite it returning to ABC
Sinclair plans to continue pre-empting "Jimmy Kimmel Live," despite the fact that ABC said it plans to bring back the program on Tuesday.
Why it matters: Sinclair is exploring a possible divestiture of its local broadcast stations, which it would need regulatory approval for.
What they're saying: "Beginning Tuesday night, Sinclair will be preempting Jimmy Kimmel Live! across our ABC affiliate stations and replacing it with news programming," the network said in a Monday evening statement.
"Discussions with ABC are ongoing as we evaluate the show's potential return." What to watch: It's unclear whether Nexstar, which was the first local affiliate group to say it would pull the program from its lineup last week, will follow in Sinclair's footsteps.
Nexstar, the largest local broadcast group in the U.S., recently said it agreed to acquire Tegna, the fourth-biggest local broadcaster, in an all-cash deal valued at $6.2 billion.
ABC ends Jimmy Kimmel’s suspension and his show will return Tuesday
NEW YORK (AP) — ABC will reinstate Jimmy Kimmel’s late night show in the wake of criticism over his comments about the assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk, officials with the network said Monday.
“We have spent the last days having thoughtful conversations with Jimmy, and after those conversations, we reached the decision to return the show on Tuesday,” ABC said a statement.
ABC suspended Kimmel indefinitely on Wednesday after comments he made about Kirk, who was killed Sept. 10, in a monologue. Kimmel said “many in MAGA land are working very hard to capitalize on the murder of Charlie Kirk” and that “the MAGA gang” was “desperately trying to characterize this kid who murdered Charlie Kirk as anything other than one of them.”
Kimmel has hosted “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” on ABC since 2003 and has been a fixture in television and comedy for even longer. He is also well known as a presenter, having hosted the Academy Awards four times.
Backlash to Kimmel’s comments was swift. Nexstar and Sinclair, two of ABC’s largest affiliate owners, said they would be pulling “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” from their stations. Others, including several fellow comedians, came to his defense.
Sinclair said Monday that it would not air Kimmel’s show Tuesday and would broadcast news programming instead. “Discussions with ABC are ongoing as we evaluate the show’s potential return,” the company said. There was no immediate comment from Nexstar on its plans for Kimmel’s return.
Andrew Kolvet, a spokesperson for Turning Point USA, the organization founded by Kirk and now headed by his widow, posted on X about Kimmel’s reinstatement: “Disney and ABC caving and allowing Kimmel back on the air is not surprising, but it’s their mistake to make. Nexstar and Sinclair do not have to make the same choice.”
Stephen Colbert joyfully reacted to the news during the opening of his “Late Show,” telling his audience that “our long national, late nightmare is over.”
Colbert, whose late show is being canceled by CBS after this season, said he was happy for his friend and the “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” staff. Grabbing his recently-won Emmy Award for outstanding talk series, the comedian could hardly contain his glee. He added, “Once more, I am the only martyr on late night!”
President Donald Trump, one of Kimmel’s frequent targets, posted on social media that Kimmel’s suspension was “great news for America.” He also called for other late night hosts to be fired. He has yet to comment on Kimmel’s reinstatement.
Kimmel’s suspension arrived in a time when Trump and his administration have pursued threats, lawsuits and federal government pressure to try to exert more control over the media industry. Trump has reached settlements with ABC and CBS over their coverage.
Trump has also filed defamation lawsuits against The Wall Street Journal and The New York Times. Republicans in Congress stripped federal funding from NPR and PBS.
Brendan Carr, the head of the Federal Communications Commission, issued a warning prior to Kimmel’s suspension that criticized Kimmel’s remarks about the Kirk assassination.
“We can do this the easy way or the hard way,” Carr said. “These companies can find ways to change conduct, to take action, frankly, on Kimmel, or there is going to be additional work for the FCC ahead.”
Carr denied on Monday that he threatened to revoke ABC’s local station licenses because of Kimmel’s remarks.
“Jimmy Kimmel is in the situation he’s in because of his ratings. Not because of anything that’s happened at the federal government level,” Carr said at the Concordia Annual Summit.
Kimmel’s suspension has cast a spotlight on the web of business interests that require approval from the U.S. government. Disney, for instance, needs approval from the Trump administration for ESPN to complete its acquisition of the NFL Network, while Nexstar needs the administration’s approval to complete its $6.2 billion purchase of broadcast rival Tegna. Sinclair has petitioned the FCC to relax rules limiting broadcaster ownership of stations.
The suspension also happened at a time when the late night landscape is shifting. CBS announced the cancellation of Colbert’s show over the summer.
Kimmel’s contract with The Walt Disney Co.-owned network had been set to expire in May 2026. His representative did not return a message seeking comment Monday.
Word of the reinstatement came as hundreds of Hollywood and Broadway stars — including Robert De Niro, Ben Affleck, Jennifer Aniston, Selena Gomez, Lin-Manuel Miranda, Tom Hanks and Meryl Streep — urged Americans “fight to defend and preserve our constitutionally protected rights” in the wake of Jimmy Kimmel’s suspension.
More than 430 movie, TV and stage stars as well as comedians, directors and writers added their names to an open letter Monday from the American Civil Liberties Union that argues it is “a dark moment for freedom of speech in our nation.”
Also Monday, ABC’s “The View” weighed in on the controversy after not raising it for two episodes after Kimmel was suspended. Co-host Whoopi Goldberg opened the show saying: “No one silences us” and she and her fellow hosts condemned Disney’s decision.
New York City mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani said Monday evening he’s willing to appear at a town hall hosted by a local ABC station after earlier canceling his appearance due to Kimmel’s suspension.
“Mr. Kimmel’s remarks were inappropriate and deeply insensitive at a critical moment for our country,” said Vice Chairman Jason Smith. “We believe broadcasters have a responsibility to educate and elevate respectful, constructive dialogue in our communities. We appreciate FCC Chairman Carr’s remarks today and this incident highlights the critical need for the FCC to take immediate regulatory action to address control held over local broadcasters by the big national networks.”
Sinclair’s ABC stations will air a special in remembrance of Charlie Kirk this Friday, during Jimmy Kimmel Live’s timeslot. The special will also air across all Sinclair stations this weekend. In addition, Sinclair is offering the special to all ABC affiliates across the country.
Sinclair will not lift the suspension of “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” on our stations until formal discussions are held with ABC regarding the network’s commitment to professionalism and accountability.
Sinclair also calls upon Mr. Kimmel to issue a direct apology to the Kirk family. Furthermore, we ask Mr. Kimmel to make a meaningful personal donation to the Kirk Family and Turning Point USA.
Regardless of ABC’s plans for the future of the program, Sinclair intends not to return “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” to our air until we are confident that appropriate steps have been taken to uphold the standards expected of a national broadcast platform.
I see the right are still throwing their tantrum and the very people who called for an end to PC, an end to censorship and screamed to bloody hell about being silenced only care about those things in terms of themselves.
And you're still in denial that the head of the FCC made a threat to Disney about Kimmel. That Sinclair, Nexstar and Disney all had deals coming up before the FCC that needed their approval and only after the FCC made their threat did any of these events about getting or keeping him off the air happen. I never thought I would see Republicans support using the government to suppress the media. But here we are. That's what they are no longer Republicans. Republicans would never do that. Only trumpians would.

Kimmel>Kirk by far… He’s back and Trump can suck it. And screw anyone who wants to say a damn thing about my attitude toward Kirk’s death; he didn’t deserve to be gunned down but in the end his hate killed him. And the MAGA boy who dared love a tranny killed him… Not a dem, not a tranny, just another far right white male on the trigger. And honestly why does it matter? There wasn’t a kill squad of ANTIFA militants on the scene, not even a far left demonstration that I could see… just a lone shooter and poor security.
As usual, no apologies from the maga scum who are seeking to further dehumanizing the left with FALSE ACCUSATIONS.
Charlie Kirk was an impressionable kid who fell into the Limbaugh radicalization trap the far right has been building for 40 years. He’s a victim of that and of Trump’s BS rhetoric. Pinheaded Steven Miller sounded full on Nazi at his funeral. So did Vance when hosting Kirk’s show. I don’t see a thing MAGA should be mad about or proud of in all of this….. SHAME.

The main reason Kimmel is back, is because Disney took a huge hit on streaming subscribers. It’s about the money and not so much about free speech.
Yup, like I said, when people speak up, they are heard. in this case, they spoke with their wallets
And now Disney is raising the prices world wide on their streaming platform to make up for the losses. Greed once again forcing customers to pay more for free speech. Pffft.

Do you really think they're raising prices because of Kimmel?

You poor snowflakes. Let me tell you what slanted FOX News isn't telling you.
Before being suspended Kimmel had an average viewership of 1.77 million viewers. Now it's 2.3 million viewers. That's an increase of just over 500,000 viewers.
As of August by comparison Fox & Friends had an average daily audience of 1.33 million viewers.
Talk about crappy ratings and a worthless show.
