Anyone gamble in wheeling WV before. I was thinking about heading their this weekend and staying a night. Anyone have any do's or dont's about the Wheeling area. I saw there was the Wheeling Island Hotel and Casino. Their web site doesn't have many pictures which is kind of scaring me
I also saw a place called the Mountaineer, that looks nice, 30 miles North east of wheeling anyone ever been to either? I need to scratch my vegas itch, I just dont want to spend that kind of money? Any suggestions?

Actually my brother just went to Mountaineer last night. Haven't heard if he won yet, so obviously he didn't. I've been there plenty of times, but they just recently added table games, where it was all slots previously. Haven't been there since the change. They also have horse and dog races there, depending on the time of year I'm sure. I've never had much luck there, but the woman I work with goes all the time, and she seems to win a lot for some damn reason. Maybe she just doesn't tell me the times she loses.

I go watch the greyhounds once in a while, always a fun time. I don't know if you smoke or not, but if you do you'll feel right at home in there. If not, I wish you luck. I can't stand being amongst all those smokers in a confined area. Apparently, there's a West Virginia requirement that if you're going to go blow the kids inheritance, you have to do it on bottom shelf liquor and unfiltered Pall Malls.

I have been to Mountaineer many times. Boxing, concerts, and booze. I don't gamble much.

My buddies go to Mountaineer all the time. I have never been there myself but from what they have said it is a good time. I like to gamble but I suck. The wife and I are planning a trip up to Niagara Falls and Toronto to gamble during spring break to get away for a few days. I know that damn roulette wheel is going to rob me blind like usual

That news bothers me as well. They've been advertising it alot on TV in Columbus and not showing much in the commercials. I was thinking it might be good for a quick fix, kind of a shorter Windsor trip, although I'm guessing they don't have strip clubs like in Windsor . . .

They have the Wheeling Feeling, and that has nothing to do with gambling

I have never in my life been so bored as I was at Mountaineer.
If you don't LOVE to gamble non stop ...... Mountaineer is about the most boring place on earth. There is NOTHING in the area except trailer parks. When I went, they did have some really bad shows ...... but nothing to really hold my attention.

I've been to both, neither since they added table games. Mountaineer WAS much nicer 5 years ago. Wheeling Downs (now Island) was a hole in the ground when I first started going there, but then they build the hotel resort and it is no longer so. I had a much better time at Wheeling Downs vs Moutaineer. I love betting on the dogs I recently drove through Wheeling and saw the billboards all over for it. I'm thinking I might have to take a trip up there sometime soon.

I swear by it too... it's insane. When I heard that I laughed about it. After watching for it I was stunned by how often it worked out.

Since they added table gaming, Wheeling is much nicer, before all they had was video games and the dog track. I don't suggest staying at the resort hotel unless u really want to spend your money that way. I suggest lookin into a hotel room in St. Clairsville (about 10 minutes away).

I have not played at Mountaineer yet but I have been told from a few poker buddies that if you plan to play poker it's fine, just don't expect world class dealers since the poker tables are so new.

I was born in Wheeling and might have been a Steelers fan except my folks moved to Cleveland when I was 3. It's a great place to visit and be from. . .far from

When I was in Memphis, we went to the Dog Races....For us the formula was if it is the longer race, bet on the smallest dog. If it is the shorter race, bet on the biggest dog.
I just have to pass this story along.....LOL....
Ok so we are down at the track and we are doing alright. One of the girls with us was the giggling type and she would bet on this dog(hee hee hee), and then this other dog(hee hee hee)...basically with no plan or reason. She was getting a little bummed because none of her dogs were winning. So we decided to help her out.
There was a race that day where there was this dog was slumming it a bit and racing out of its league. Every tip sheet had him pegged. This was the best dog on the track that day. So we told her to Bet across the Line on this dog and you can't lose. heck....thats what we were doing...LOL
Now I told you about our Big dog, Little dog schtick. And this was a longer race. Well if you have never been to the dog track, the reason you take the smaller dog is because the bigger dogs go out fast and don't have the speed in the end. Hence this is why they are good for the short races. The little dogs start behind and then come smoking past in the end.
So the race starts and sure enough down the straightaway tbhe big dogs are out fast. And she looks at us like we are crazy. We said just wait. Sure enough we are right...at the end of the first straightaway the Big dogs are out fast but our dog starts making his move. And Let me say that as far as we could see, the tip sheets were right...this dog was by far the best dog on the track that day.
So our dog starts making his move as they are about to go around the first turn. And I can still see it plain as day. He comes up between 2 larger dogs and the outside dog just comes hard in to the turn making a little dog sandwich!!!! I kid you not, when the dogs met, the little guy got popped into the air like watermelon at a Gallagher show. Hie did a complete flip in the air and 2 more on the ground, the poor dog got turned all over the place and he didn't know where he was. I am serious, they had to come and get the dog off the track because it was LOST!!!!
My buddies and I were laughing our butts off. It was one of the funniest things I have ever seen. ANd that girl was so ticked off at us because we made her bet more than she had been at the time on this one dog.....Great day...I came out $5 down including drinks and admission and everything....best $5 I ever spent....LOL
I thought I was wrong once....but I was mistaken...
What's the use of wearing your lucky rocketship underpants if nobody wants to see them????
