St. Louis-area town considers proposal that would ban swearing in bars ST. CHARLES, Mo. - What the ...? A St. Louis-area town is considering a bill that would ban swearing in bars, along with table-dancing, drinking contests and profane music. City officials contend the bill is needed to keep rowdy crowds under control because the historic downtown area gets a little too lively on some nights. City Councilman Richard Veit said he was prompted to propose the bill after complaints about bad bar behavior. He says it will give police some rules to enforce when things get too rowdy. But some bar owners worry the bill is too vague and restrictive, saying it may be a violation of their civil rights. Marc Rousseau, who owns the bar R.T. Weilers, said he thinks the bill needs revision. "We're dealing with adults here once again and I don't think it's the city's job or the government's job to determine what we can and cannot play in our restaurant," Rousseau said. The proposal would ban indecent, profane or obscene language, songs, entertainment and literature at bars. They should just make a law that all businesses are only to operate between 8am and 5pm M-F, and that anytime outside of business hours and getting to and from work, you must be inside your house with the doors locked. Hourly check-in using a webcam with the governmental monitoring service. Smoke detectors in all rooms 1 TV and Radio channel, produced by the government, and everyone must work within 5 miles from where they live, and walk or ride a bicycle to get there. Rations will be handed out 1 Saturday per month on a rotating location basis. Those rations will include no saturated fats, sugars, sodium, or trans fats or oils. No video games or music will be permitted to be heard. Each person is alloted a certain number of breaths per day depending on age & weight. Ignoring any one of the rules is ground for immediate execution. Have a nice day!

So much for free will. I think the government should control what individual business owners do. I dont think it should be up to each business owner to decide how they want to run their business. sarcastic truth

why is it ok to regulate one and not the other?
What happens behind closed doors of a private business, as long as no one is being physically harmed against their will, should not be the governments concern, as long as they are paying their taxes.

Almost, except that the book you have to knowingly pick it up and read it. If you don't like it you can put it down. But with the music you have no choice. It's pumped over speakers in the bar and heaven knows you can't just leave the bar.

I'm assuming if they are talking about bars, they mean actually table dancing. You know where people stand on tables and dance. That can be a huge problem with liability. Not for the state but many bar owners. It is also dangerous because tables aren't made for this kind of thing.
If they were just talking about table dances(like in strip clubs) I would assume they would also be regulating stripping in this same bill.
I'm not saying it is right to regulate table dancing, just that I can see reasons for it.

I believe that one of the biggest problems we face in this here democratic republic is that we have moved so far away from believing that our basic rights are from God. Look, our rights have to come from somewhere.. either they come from God or they come from government... we have been slowly moving across that continuum for a while from God to government. The closer we get to believing that government is responsible for our rights, the easier it is for government to begin infringing on those rights... when the vast majority of elected officials and the vast majority of the population actually believed that our basic rights came from God, then it was very hard to justify how they could be taken away... But now that most people believe they are a product of government, it has become significantly easier for the government to step in and take them or change them... in our own best interest... and this is going to get much worse before it gets better, if in fact it ever does get better.

Yes, me for one. Smoking in bars is hazardous to others. It can and does effect others health. My wife is highly allergic to smoke. After having to be around in smokey areas (not heavy smoke) she suffers from physical ailements. If someone is swearing, playing drinking games or dancing on tables it has no physical effects on others.

Yes they are!

Just like those who feel it's perfectly acceptable to discriminate against hiring smokers.
Just wait untill they extend that to "anybody overweight by 20 lbs. or more". Or with certain pre existing health conditions.
Nobody gives a DAMN about the rights of others untill it "hits home". THEN they get all excited about it.

How often does your wife hang out in bars, Pdawg? The argument was to allow the bar owners to decide, if there are so many people who don't want to be around smoke then why wouldn't owners open non-smoking bars? They obvisously could make a huge profit. It's hurting Mike Taggart from our Browns bar big time because the vast majority of people who voted against it never set foot in a bar, but they want to control everyone else who does. Nannies rock, and they will keep on 'rockin.

Yes, I could have done better. But you see, I have no problem with "eating establishments" not permiting smoking. But as was asked..................... How much time does your wife spend sitting in BARS?There in lies the problem. MANY of the people who voted for the smoking ban IN BARS, don't GO to BARS. So why do you care what people do while THEY sit in BARS when you're NOT THERE?

We used to go out alot. Pure bars or pubs like Tagarts? Not much in the last 15 years. Many resturants have bars though. As well as many clubs where there is live music. Smoking and non smoking areas are a joke. You still get healthy amount of smoke even if you don't sit in a smoking area. Smoking is dangerous to others.
I beleve in personal rights, but not when it enfringes on the health of others. There are many times personal freedoms are enfringed on because of adverse effects to others.

Of course it's the bar staffs job to keep people from climbing on the tables and dancing. But honestly, other than the very occasional drunk girl, who the staff quickly removed from the table, I never saw bar table dancing as a regular occurrence except on TV.

Appearently there must have been more than one bill when it came to smoking. my memory isn't very good when it comes to things I don't concern myself with. I doubt I had any problems with people smoking in drinking establishment, just resturants.

No, it was pretty much all or nothing with the smoking vote. Just all of those in favor of no smoking in restaurants voted FOR the bill since those were the only choices.
Just think...if it would have failed, perhaps next up would have been JUST no smoking in eating establishments. But, no....the sheep simply had to follow the herd.

They banned smoking in resturants so you don't kill those who don't want to be killed by lung cancer. Those that are complaining about the smoking ban must be pissed they can't go shooting people with their guns just because it hurts someone else. Don't want to be shot, don't be near me. It's the same affect of, "Don't want to be bothered by smoke, go somewhere else."

I'm an old guy that doesn't know much about anything but I'm fairly certain that most of the trouble in bars stems from drinking! They need to ban drinking in bars.
