CBS News on Sunday pulled a “60 Minutes” segment from its latest episode that was set to highlight conditions inside the notorious Salvadoran prison where the Trump administration has deported Venezuelan migrants.

The decision drew sharp backlash, including from the segment’s correspondent, Sharyn Alfonsi, who said the decision was “political” in a note to colleagues reviewed by several media outlets.

CBS News announced the change to the episode just hours before it was set to air. An editor’s note on the “60 Minutes” account on the social platform X notified the public that the broadcast lineup had been updated and that the “Inside CECOT” report would “air in a future broadcast.”

The New York Times reported the decision was made after Bari Weiss, the new CBS News editor in chief, “requested numerous changes to the segment.” CBS News, according to a statement reported by the Times, said the piece “needed additional reporting.”

NPR, meanwhile, reported that Weiss said the segment could not air without first getting an on-the-record statement from the Trump administration.

Alfonsi pushed back on suggestions that the decision to pull the segment was an editorial one, saying in the email, “Our story was screened five times and cleared by both CBS attorneys and Standards and Practices.”

“It is factually correct. In my view, pulling it now—after every rigorous internal check has been met, is not an editorial decision, it is a political one,” she continued.

She also noted in her email that her team reached out to relevant government agencies and the White House with questions and did not get a response.

“Government silence is a statement, not a VETO. Their refusal to be interviewed is a tactical maneuver designed to kill the story,” Alfonsi wrote. “If the administration’s refusal to participate becomes a valid reason to spike a story, we have effectively handed them a ‘kill switch’ for any reporting they find inconvenient.”

Alfonsi noted the program had been promoting the story on social media for days and that “viewers are expecting it.”

“When it fails to air without a credible explanation, the public will correctly identify this as corporate censorship. We are trading 50 years of ‘Gold Standard’ reputation for a single week of political quiet,” she wrote. “I care too much about this broadcast to watch it be dismantled without a fight.”

The Hill reached out to CBS News for comment.

Weiss released a statement Sunday night saying, “I look forward to airing this important piece when it’s ready,” according to The New York Times.

“My job is to make sure that all stories we publish are the best they can be. Holding stories that aren’t ready for whatever reason — that they lack sufficient context, say, or that they are missing critical voices — happens every day in every newsroom,” she said.

I believe Trump has a plant or two at CBS/Disney that needs to be purged. They could have aired that without saying anything to the doofus in the WH.

I guess there is a network in Canada that aired the segment. I'd love to see it.

We are seeing the beginning of our own State sponsored and run news agency. TASS (Telegrafnoye Agentstvo Sovetskogo Soyusza) now known as Information Telegraph Agency of Russia.

thumbsup Thanks for the link!

A lot of people think it's perfectly fine to treat other people like animals instead of people. They think it's fine to imprison, or in some cases even kill people without due process. Just one more way this country is going to hell.

It appears there are some things you didn't hear.................

It is a confirmed conclusion of U.S. intelligence agencies and bipartisan congressional investigations that Russia interfered in the 2016 U.S. presidential election. The interference was a "sweeping and systematic" effort ordered by Russian President Vladimir Putin with the goals of undermining faith in the U.S. democratic process, harming Hillary Clinton's candidacy, and helping Donald Trump's election chances.

Guliani who was working with the trump campaign in 2016 held a meeting with Russian operatives. This was the reason the "trump campaign", not the lie that it was trump himself, was investigated to have possible ties with Russia.

The only "pressure" placed on social media was to stop spreading conspiracy theories and crazy ideas for Covid cures like trump did to prevent more deaths.

It was not proven that Covid came from a lab leak. It's all speculative from both sides.

Your threshold for facts appears to be very low. rolleyes

So the FACT that the bipartisan congressional investigations found that Russia interfered in the 2016 U.S. presidential election is a hoax? According to who, trump and those whop believe everything he says blindly? You do realize bipartisan means it was found to be true by members of both parties, right? What possible evidence could you have that they were wrong?

Are you saying that Guliani who was working with the trump campaign having a meeting with known Russian operatives wasn't the cause for the part of the investigation looking into any possible involvement by the "trump campaign"? Are you trying to say the investigation wasn't done on the trump campaign but rather trump the individual?

Where has it ever been determined that the Steele dossier illegal?

Do you just puke up words based on your feelings that have no basis in facts?

You sound like a snowflake.

Social Media needed bitch slapped.. And it does again...

What about Trumps Dementia?

Russia was a hoax. The whole thing spawned from the Steele Dosier which was illegal to begin with.

He'll just dance around the fact that Trump was called a Russian asset and the media tried to sell us on Trump's Russian collusion for three years straight. Every day, night and in between. ALL of which was found to be false in the investigation. The media sold it as FACT that whole time.

And as you probably know, Guliani had NOTHING to do with Trump's campaign and NEVER met with "Russian operatives. That's 1000% made-up b.s. I suspect he knows that as well, but is never opposed to a well-placed lie.

And yeah, the last lie ignores the fact that NO social media companies allowed discussion of the Crackhead's laptop. All posted links were deleted and the NY Times had their account locked. 50+ intel officials signed their names in blood that it was "Russian disinformation" and then three years later simply said it was a "mistake". Their lies helped convince media they should sequester what turned out to be the 100% truth.

I won't even get deep into the COVID b.s. as it makes wimpy people pee their pants; as evidence by Tweedle's post ^ acting like I called COVID itself a hoax. Still cracks me up that people that consider themselves intelligent adults don't understand (read: refuse to admit) that Coronavirus, which originated in Wuhan -- came from the Wuhan Institute of Virology -- where they were studying Coronavirus and how it could be more easily transmitted to humans. 🤣I suspect these same people would blame a thunderstorm on wet umbrellas.

So, on one hand, we're expected to believe that Russin bots "influenced" the election to a degree that decided the winner, but the FBI creating Russia hoax #2, with Hunter's laptop and the Biden Crime Family, had no effect on the election.

Problem is, nobody does, not even the blind supporters. As we saw at the polls in 2024, Americans are NOT that stupid and are DONE with the b.s.

Just realized I pointed this at Pit... I meant to point it at FATE..... my bad

Trump is a Russian asset. He had Russian diplomats in the Oval and told them that something he did would make Putin happy....

He said over and over again that Ukraine started this war... They didn't. Russia attacked Ukraine.... They had no reason to do so... But trump is still sitting there trying to get Ukraine to give up some territory to Russia in order to stop the war.. But even that doesn't get Putin to stop.. He knows he's got a friend in Trump.

Trump sided with Putin when it was being discussed how he helped trump get elected. He did so over the objections from his own intelligence people.

You can, if you wish, forget all those things, or just push them off as a Nothing burger,, But the rest of the world knows that Trump is a Russian asset..

There are many other examples..

It's too bad so many Americans Haven't figured it out yet. it's right there in front of them which is why we are the laughing stock of the world...

Allies may stop sharing intelligence with US due to leaks to Moscow - NBC

link

Some US allies are considering reducing the amount of intelligence they share with Washington in response to the Donald Trump administration's conciliatory approach to Russia. They fear the transfer of data to Moscow, NBC News reports.

According to the sources, the allies are considering this step because of concerns about protecting foreign agents whose identities could be inadvertently revealed.

Every intelligence agency treats its obligations to foreign agents as sacrosanct, promising to ensure the agents' safety and conceal their identities. Anything that jeopardizes that commitment undermines trust, former officials say, and could lead some spy services to refrain from sharing information with Washington.

The sources said that allies, including Israel, Saudi Arabia and members of the so-called Five Eyes intelligence alliance, are exploring the possibility of revising current intelligence-sharing protocols to reflect the Trump administration's warming relations with Russia.

“Those discussions are already happening,” said a source with direct knowledge of the discussions. However, according to the sources, no decisions or actions have been taken.

According to the sources, the review is part of a broader examination of the range of relations with Washington among many US allies, including diplomacy, trade and military cooperation, as well as intelligence issues.

Yes, Rudy Giuliani worked with Donald Trump's 2016 campaign, serving as a prominent surrogate, offering advice (like shaping the Muslim ban), and campaigning vigorously, even alleging corruption against Hillary Clinton, later becoming a key figure and lawyer for Trump in the Russia investigation and beyond, though his post-election transition role was diminished.Key Roles & Activities in 2016:

Campaign Surrogate: Giuliani was a vocal and visible supporter, appearing at rallies and defending Trump against criticisms.

Policy Advisor: He advised Trump on policy, notably helping to refine the initial "Muslim ban" into a more legally defensible anti-terrorism measure.

Attacker of Opponents: He aggressively accused Hillary Clinton and the State Department of corruption, stating, "Pay money, get access. Pay money, get favors. Pay a lot of money, get big favors," calling it briber.

CIA, other spy agencies told White House about Rudy Giuliani's dealings with alleged Russian agents

The U.S. wasn't spying on Giuliani, but on people with whom he talked, including Andrii Derkach, identified by the Treasury Department as a Russian agent.

State Department imposes sanctions on former EU official, disinformation group leaders for ‘censorship’

The US State Department on Tuesday imposed visa sanctions on a former top European Union official and employees of organizations that combat disinformation for alleged censorship – sharply ratcheting up the Trump administration’s fight against European regulations that have impacted digital platforms, far-right politicians and Trump allies, including Elon Musk.

In a statement, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio accused the five sanctioned people of leading “organized efforts to coerce American platforms to censor, demonetize, and suppress American viewpoints they oppose.”

Top Trump administration officials have repeatedly condemned European nations for alleged censorship, and the latest State Department human rights report alleged “significant human rights issues” in allies like the United Kingdom, France, and Germany over “serious restrictions on freedom of expression.”

The new sanctions were quickly met by outcry from European officials, including the French president.

Among those sanctioned Tuesday are Thierry Breton, a former European commissioner involved in the Digital Services Act (DSA), a sweeping EU law that requires Big Tech platforms to take meaningful steps to reduce illegal and harmful content.

In a social media post on Tuesday, Breton questioned: “Is McCarthy’s witch hunt back?”, referencing the late senator’s Cold-War era inquisition of alleged communists who he claimed had infiltrated American government institutions.

“To our American friends: ‘Censorship isn’t where you think it is,’” he said on X.

The European Commission strongly condemned the move to impose travel restrictions on Breton and four other European individuals, and said it has requested clarifications from the US authorities

“If needed, we will respond swiftly and decisively to defend our regulatory autonomy against unjustified measures,” a statement said on Tuesday.

French President Emmanuel Macron said in a post on X that the measures “amount to intimidation and coercion aimed at undermining European digital sovereignty.”

The State Department also targeted the CEO of the Center for Countering Digital Hate, Imran Ahmed. The organization says it “works to stop the spread of online hate and disinformation through innovative research, public campaigns and policy advocacy.”

CNN reached out to the Center for Countering Digital Hate but did not immediately receive a reply.

Clare Melford, the CEO of the Global Disinformation Index, was also sanctioned. The organization describes itself as working to strengthen “the systems that make the internet safer by working with governments, industry, and civil society.”

In a statement to CNN a spokesperson for GDI said that the sanctions amounted to an “authoritarian attack on free speech and an egregious act of government censorship.”

“The Trump Administration is, once again, using the full weight of the federal government to intimidate, censor, and silence voices they disagree with,” the spokesperson said. “Their actions today are immoral, unlawful, and un-American.”

Leaders of the German organization HateAid, Josephine Ballon and Anna-Lena von Hodenberg, were also sanctioned. The organization aims to combat “hate, violence and systematic disinformation” on the internet.

In a statement Tuesday, the two said they were “not surprised” by the sanctions.

“It is an act of repression by a government that is increasingly disregarding the rule of law and trying to silence its critics by any means necessary. This marks a new escalation: The US government is clearly questioning European sovereignty,” they said.

“We will not be intimidated by a government that uses accusations of censorship to silence those who stand up for human rights and freedom of expression,” they continued. “Despite the significant strain and restrictions placed on us and our families by US government measures, we will continue our work with all our strength — now more than ever. We stand in solidarity with all those affected, and with all those who now fear similar measures.”

Rubio’s statement said that for the five sanctioned people, he had “determined that their entry, presence, or activities in the United States have potentially serious adverse foreign policy consequences for the United States.”

“These radical activists and weaponized NGOs have advanced censorship crackdowns by foreign states—in each case targeting American speakers and American companies,” he said.

The top US diplomat said that “based on these determinations,” the State Department “has taken steps to impose visa restrictions on agents of the global censorship-industrial complex who, as a result, will be generally barred from entering the United States.” Further, the Department of Homeland Security “can initiate removal proceedings against certain individuals … which renders such individuals deportable,” he said.

Breton has repeatedly clashed with Musk over the Digital Services Act. In August 2024, Breton told Musk in a letter – ahead of an interview with Donald Trump – that he must comply with the regulation, according to Reuters.

US Undersecretary of State for Public Diplomacy Sarah Rogers specifically referenced that letter in a post on X Tuesday, accusing Breton of having “ominously reminded Musk of X’s legal obligations and ongoing ‘formal proceedings’ for alleged noncompliance with ‘illegal content’ and ‘disinformation’ requirements under the DSA.”

Rogers said Ahmed was a “key collaborator with the Biden Administration’s effort to weaponize the government against U.S. citizens.” She indicated he had been sanctioned, in part, for the organization’s 2022 “Disinformation Dozen” report, which took aim at 12 anti-vaxxers, including now-HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy, Jr., responsible for the majority of anti‑vaccine content circulating on social media platforms.

Rogers, in a social media post, accused Melford’s organization of using US “taxpayer money to exhort censorship and blacklisting of American speech and press.”

“The State Department stands ready and willing to expand today’s list if other foreign actors do not reverse course,” Rubio said.

In February Vice President JD Vance used one of his first major speeches after taking office to criticize what he described as censorship efforts in Europe in a speech delivered at the Munich Security Conference.

He claimed that leaders had “threatened and bullied social media companies to censor so-called misinformation,” citing the example of the Covid-19 lab leak theory.

“It looks more and more like old entrenched interest, hiding behind ugly, Soviet-era words like misinformation and disinformation, who simply don’t like the idea that somebody with an alternative viewpoint might express a different opinion,” he added.

You just keep lying.....

No he did not "worked with Donald Trump's 2016 campaign". That's made up b.s. He endorsed him and defended his policies . He did not "campaign vigorously.

THAT SAID. That b.s. is your bait to change the conversation. And I quit being your monkey a long time ago. So let's just say you're right about that, since it has NOTHING to do with the subject at hand anyway.

You said:
Guliani who was working with the trump campaign in 2016 held a meeting with Russian operatives. This was the reason the "trump campaign", not the lie that it was trump himself, was investigated to have possible ties with Russia.

Those were statements that actually pertain to Russia. Got some links, or were you lying again??

If you're going to argue b.s. besides that -- have a nice day.

He was working "with the trump campaign". I already pointed that out. You seem to be confusing "worked with" with "worked for". All of the activities outlined were supporting trump's election for president. ..............................

Giuliani met repeatedly with Derkach on Dec. 5, 2019, as part of his efforts to gather derogatory information on Biden's Ukraine dealings. Derkach has released what American officials call selectively edited audiotapes of Biden conversations with Ukrainian officials, at least one of which was retweeted by the president.

Giuliani did not respond to a request for comment. In an interview on MSNBC last month, he downplayed his interactions with Derkach and said he was unaware the man was a Russian agent.

You are arguing against well known and readily available facts. I'm not the one playing the part of the monkey here.

So making stump speeches and rallies in support of trump aren't working with the campaign?
