I'm certainly not an advocate of simply "drafting a QB to draft a QB". However I don't trust myself as being expert enough to evaluate college QB's.
I believe if they shore up the OL and get a legitimate #1 WR without drafting a QB those improvements alone will lead to more wins. Sanders has shown he isn't a terrible QB but none of us have any way to know how far or how much he will develop. Even at the level he is playing at now with better protection and a better running game the Browns would be quite capable of winning 5-8 games next year.
That would put the Browns much further down in the draft order and cost much more in resources to move up in the draft. That's not an ideal scenario. They are however now in that ideal scenario to where the cost would be much more palatable.
Once again I'm not advocating they simply draft a QB for the sake of drafting a QB. But if they identify their designated target and can get him, there would be no better time to do that than now.

In the pre-game "College Gameday" coverage.
They went into detail about Mateer's broken thumb. X-rays reports with doctors. Interviews with Mateer and others.
It blew my mind. He broke his thumb in a game and kept playing. Finished the game. Goes to the locker room and gets an x-ray.
Broken right at the base of his thumb. He gets surgery by a renowned hand specialist. Three screws are inserted into the bone to stabilize it. We are talking about his throwing hand.
He comes back in 17 days and plays.
Imagine trying to throw a football with a broken thumb. Your thumb is what you grip with. It is what makes us able to do all hand tasks.
He is playing games with tape on his thumb. The way he plays includes running the ball. You can see him protecting his hand while getting tackled.
His coaches and teammates are in awe of this guy.
His numbers take a dive. He goes from a Heisman candidate to struggling. And still wins games and leads his team to the playoffs.
His ability as a runner is unique. He is shifty and powerful but what stands out is his vision. He finds a way to go forward under chaos.
His arm talent jumps off the screen. Fast release from a low delivery similar to Allen. He can spin it.
Long way to the draft but right now he considered a top 50 guy. Not a first rounder.
Myself, I would draft Mateer in the second. I would LOVE to grab a guy that falls like this after grabbing our LT of the future and another (needed) roster piece.

IMO the only QB out there worthy of a high #1 pick is Mendoza if it's true that Moore is going back to school. Maybe one could sneak into the very late 1st round, but the rest are 2nd round or later. This QB class didn't come close to the preseason hype.

Hope he freaks some GMs out and that lunatic falls to the Browns!
Also, Cignetti is the best coach in college football. Incredible what he has done with that program in such a quick amount of time regardless of the transfer portal era.
