I wonder if when we read that NYC's budget is twice the combined budgets of 6 other cities if we should dig a bit or we should just laugh and accept it at face value? I guess it depends on which way the headline reads and whether it's from your echo chamber or not.
Oh - What's that? NYC handles county government budgeting as well as city budgeting. What's that? Just one part of NYC's budget is public education which none of the other cities mentioned pay for in their budget? What's that? The public education budget alone is nearly as much as all those other cities budgets combined? (Which none of the other cities cover) What's that? NYC has a public hospital system and spends at least 75% more than any other city of comparable size? And salaries are higher... and the NYC budget handles welfare and public assistance that other cities don't ... and it funds a University system that other cities don't have to ...
No doubt NYC pay more in taxes ... but it's closer to 25-30% more on a true comparison. But why let details and pesky facts get in the way of a good sensationalistic headline?
