Do we stay at Number 6 or trade down? What if Tate and Downs are both available who do we take, or do we still trade down?

I am in the middle of a live mock draft with other posters from different teams on another site that usually takes about 10 days to complete. In that draft, so far..

1. Raiders Fernando Mendoza
2. Jets Arvell Reese
3. Cardinals Jeremiyah Love
4. Titans David Bailey
5. Giants Sonny Styles
6. *TRADE* Chiefs (I traded #6 and #70 to the Chiefs for #9 and #40), they took Rueben Bain
7. Commanders Caleb Downs
8. Saints Mansoor Delane
9. Browns - Carnell Tate
10. Can pick at any time, but goes on the clock at 5:00 pm

The Browns now have (4) picks in the top 40.

The Chiefs are looking to move for that Edge player maybe we will use #9 or #24 fot that 2027 #1. But drop 3 Spots and still get Tate is awesome!

That's a question that's pretty much too loaded to answer for me. There are for too many variables that come into play.

First to even complete a trade down you need a trading partner. In your scenario that seems to be a given so I'll approach it from that angle.

The first question would be will that trade include a first round pick next year? Next year should be rich in QB's and at that point the question becomes do they try to set themselves up in the best possible position to draft a QB in next years draft? We certainly have a huge question at the QB position now and there also doesn't seem to be a second choice for a franchise QB in this years draft.

How far down would that trade be? Would it put them out of the range to draft one of the big impact players?

How much compensation would the trade partner be willing to pay? Does it line up with the value of the #6 pick?

IMO you never know what you should do until you have all of the cards on the table. Trading down just for the sake of trading down is not wise. Neither would be refusing to trade down because you are simply stuck on a single player unless you are in need of a franchise QB and that QB is sitting there for you to draft.

As I stated, there are simply too many unknowns in such a question to give a definitive answer as things stand today.

Intoducing for The Cleveland Browns, Quarterback Deshawn "The Predator" Watson. He will also be the one to choose your next head coach.

Unfortunately #24 isn't going to net you a future first no matter what you do.

It would be almost as difficult to move #9 for a future 1st without giving up some pretty good ammo to get it...

A couple of examples that might work:

Tampa Bay #19 and their 2027 first for #9 and our 2027 2nd
Buffalo #28 and their 2027 first for #9 and our 2027 4th

Either way, like PitDawg stated above, you will be moving out of the realm of difference maker starter to questionable player in that range. It has to make sense. When looking for ammunition in the 2027 draft, does Buffaloes first round really hold that much value? It's an extra pick, but it's closer to a 2nd rounder than someone like Miami.

Now, talking about Miami. If they want someone at #6, we could possibly do something that looks like #11 and 2027 first round for #6 and our 2027 2nd round. so in essence, they would be moving up 5 spots into the top ten, we would still get an impact player at #11.. then next year we would be moving from the second round to possibly a rather high pick with all of their turnover this off season. Miami has a new HC, new coordinators, shipped off their starting QB and best WR. Replaced the QB with Malik Willis, so he could be great or he could suck eggs, who knows. It's a risk I would rather take though, rather than swapping picks with Buffalo, then using their first rounder in 2027. Even after gaining 30 spots from the 3rd to 4th round in the previous trade.

Trade value is in the eye of the beholder and carries risk for both sides.

I agree Irish, trading #24 won't net you a 1st in 2027.

I think if you trade out of #6, it will have to be in the 15-20 range to net a 1st in 2027.

The only exception would be if more than one club covets a player like Tate or Downs. If they're both on the board, it's possible three teams or more could be ringing our phone off the hook. That's the only time things get goofy enough to net a future 1st for only moving 3-4 spots.

One other thing we fail to do as fans is realize there are other teams on the board around us, it's not like ours is the only pick that will let some team acquire a player they want. If a situation like I offered above comes to pass, teams are already calling the Giants and Titans above us and the Commanders right behind us at 7.
