When can the Browns be good? The D is in good shape. The draft class of Fannin, Judkins and Schwesinger hopefully only gets better. The rookie draft class has the potential to have a similar impact. The OL has been overhauled with FA's (and a 1st round LT) ... I think we are selling this team short if we think it's 2 years away. I think a top 2 or 3 QB in a deep QB class in next year's draft and we can compete. Hopefully Monken is the guy - that'll be another big factor.
I think the answer to that question is different depending on one may view things. What ones definition of "good" is for example. Is the ability to simply "compete" mean you're "good"? If you compete and lose by 3 points or less in several games are you good? Would having the ability to compete in games but only win 6 games mean you're good? I get those are loaded questions and the answer as I suggested may be different depending on who you ask.
But let's set a standard as a goal of what most people would consider good. Winning your own division would be good staring line for good. Going further than that would be better but we need a baseline with which to define the discussion.
And I won't say the Browns "can't" do that over the next two seasons I just try to look at the likelihood. We don't have a QB on the roster who has shown they can be "good" in a Browns uniform. Will an improved OL help? That all depends even though one would think it will at first glance. When watson first got here we had a very good OL. Did that help? If it did I didn't see it. Would a better running game help with a better OL?
Watson came here in 2022. In 2022 the Browns rushed for 2,490 total yards on 532 attempts, averaging 4.7 yards per carry and 146.5 rushing yards per game. This rushing offense ranked 6th overall in the NFL yet the Browns won 7 games in 2022.
However watson only played in 6 games that year but that's still above his average games per season he has played since hes been here, so there's that. 2023 looked much better but we had Flacco.
So the juggernaut needed to make the whole thing work is a QB which we haven't seen on the roster. Something they don't have. So while we may see improvement this season, "good" may be a hard nut to crack.
For the sake of argument let's say they draft a top rookie QB in the 2027 draft. It's rare that a rookie QB comes into the league and hits the ground running. The speed of the game and acclimating to the NFL is a monstrous task. Their rookie seasons are usually just getting their feet wet and settling in.
Like I said, what defines good varies from person to person. I certainly think we should be seeing improvement because of all the things you mentioned. And maybe I'm a little more cautious about this past draft than you are. As of now it all looks good on paper. As of now there's certainly cause for optimism regarding this years draft class. But as with every draft, you never know until they take the field on game days.
I'm certainly not saying the Browns can't be good over the course of the next two seasons. However I don't believe many of us thinking we should be cautious and temper our expectations are selling them short or overlooking anything.
