When I first heard this. I was pissed.
As a Browns fan it has been rough to find something to cheer about. Myles was something to cheer about.
He was a Brown. He was ours. And he was the best defensive player in the NFL. I was happy when he set the sack record.
It was something to be proud of.
Then you look at our record which has been dismal. Myles has been on the team for nine years.
The cold truth is sometimes hard to face. DW and Shedeur Sanders are trying to win the starter's job.
Who would like to bet their house on winning a Super Bowl with either guy leading the Browns?
The 2027 draft represents real possibilities to draft a franchise quarterback. Of course there are no guarantees.
How to win a Super Bowl:
Elite quarterback play is the greatest predictor of sustained success. Teams either need an established superstar or a young, highly capable QB on a cost-controlled rookie contract.
Wow that sounds so easy doesn't it? In fact we all know the Browns don't have that. Can DW or Shedeur be that?
Not likely.
Haslam and Berry are fully aware of what needs to happen.
The 2026 is getting closer and we have our roster. Watching the players drafted from 25 and 26 draft will be important because they represent the future.
The 2027 draft represents the chance to find the quarterback who can lead the Browns to their first Super Bowl. Before the trade I seen some value in Deshaun Watson winning the QB job and possibly having a good season. I no longer see any value there. I think it is clear and quite obvious now that the Browns are building a team to be competitive before and during the opening of the new stadium. Even if Watson has a good year, I doubt he is the QB for 2029. At this point I think 2026 season at QB is all about Sheduer Sanders. He either plays well and the team wins some games and stays competitive in the AFC North, or he falls flat and the team tanks with SS at the helm. If he tanks the Browns will be sellers at the trade deadline with both Denzil Ward and Grant Delpit. Denzil just like Garrett deserves to be on a winner and by the time this team will win if they are drafting the FQB in 2027 he will be on the wrong side of 30. Delpit could be resigned by the trade deadline, and he is still young enough to be part of the youth movement but if they have not resigned him by the deadline might as well trade him before he leaves as a free agent in the off season if the team is not winning this season.

It looks like the 3rd round pick in the deal is conditional. I'm curious what those conditions are. Are they could go higher conditions, or might not get it conditions? I'm hoping the former, but that can be dangerous as a Browns fan. Haven't been able to track down any details yet.

I wish the timelines worked with Myles and the team , but they didn't. It is what it is. Time to focus on getting a QB and setting a new timeline. Same with Joe Thomas or Phil Dawson... It always seems to be that the timelines are off... The final statement is exactly what we need! A worthy QB is the only way we get over the hump. A rookie in 2027 would be on course for a 2029 run. So, this young team they are putting together will be solid veterans right about they time they open the new stadium. That doesn't mean we have to lose double digit games for the next 3 seasons. Growth and continuity will be key in ramping up for a run.

The Browns 3rd round pick becomes a 1st round pick if the Rams trade Garrett to a team in the AFC North. It's just a poison pill.

When can the Browns be good? The D is in good shape. The draft class of Fannin, Judkins and Schwesinger hopefully only gets better. The rookie draft class has the potential to have a similar impact. The OL has been overhauled with FA's (and a 1st round LT) ... I think we are selling this team short if we think it's 2 years away. I think a top 2 or 3 QB in a deep QB class in next year's draft and we can compete. Hopefully Monken is the guy - that'll be another big factor. I think the answer to that question is different depending on one may view things. What ones definition of "good" is for example. Is the ability to simply "compete" mean you're "good"? If you compete and lose by 3 points or less in several games are you good? Would having the ability to compete in games but only win 6 games mean you're good? I get those are loaded questions and the answer as I suggested may be different depending on who you ask. But let's set a standard as a goal of what most people would consider good. Winning your own division would be good staring line for good. Going further than that would be better but we need a baseline with which to define the discussion. And I won't say the Browns "can't" do that over the next two seasons I just try to look at the likelihood. We don't have a QB on the roster who has shown they can be "good" in a Browns uniform. Will an improved OL help? That all depends even though one would think it will at first glance. When watson first got here we had a very good OL. Did that help? If it did I didn't see it. Would a better running game help with a better OL? Watson came here in 2022. In 2022 the Browns rushed for 2,490 total yards on 532 attempts, averaging 4.7 yards per carry and 146.5 rushing yards per game. This rushing offense ranked 6th overall in the NFL yet the Browns won 7 games in 2022. However watson only played in 6 games that year but that's still above his average games per season he has played since hes been here, so there's that. 2023 looked much better but we had Flacco. So the juggernaut needed to make the whole thing work is a QB which we haven't seen on the roster. Something they don't have. So while we may see improvement this season, "good" may be a hard nut to crack. For the sake of argument let's say they draft a top rookie QB in the 2027 draft. It's rare that a rookie QB comes into the league and hits the ground running. The speed of the game and acclimating to the NFL is a monstrous task. Their rookie seasons are usually just getting their feet wet and settling in. Like I said, what defines good varies from person to person. I certainly think we should be seeing improvement because of all the things you mentioned. And maybe I'm a little more cautious about this past draft than you are. As of now it all looks good on paper. As of now there's certainly cause for optimism regarding this years draft class. But as with every draft, you never know until they take the field on game days. I'm certainly not saying the Browns can't be good over the course of the next two seasons. However I don't believe many of us thinking we should be cautious and temper our expectations are selling them short or overlooking anything.
Intoducing for The Cleveland Browns, Quarterback Deshawn "The Predator" Watson. He will also be the one to choose your next head coach.

His $29.2M bonus come September is going to cost him an extra $2.9M in tax penalties. His average salary of $40M is going to jump from about $1.1M in Ohio tax to about $5.3M in California tax Over the next 4 years, being in California is going to cost him a starting rookie contract(s) salary per year. Let that sink in, he could pay for Denzel Boston $2.25M and Emmanuel McNeil-Warren $2.09M with the tax difference he is paying, just on his salary.

I find it odd how people are bringing up Myles taxes in California when Myles himself wanted to and agreed to go there. It seems it was a non issue for him. It's almost as if people have veered away from the football aspect of the conversation and taken it in a direction meant for a different forum.

Not to mention that California has a "jock tax" that takes extra from in-state and out-of-state athletes.... and he is full-time in-state, now.

...why a player might be more interested in WINNING..rather than being upset over the tax structure in CA. vs OH.
Why is Cleveland considered as one of the worst locations to pursue a Pro football career in..?
The answer is not the tax structure in Ohio...IT IS due to the fact that the Browns are not winners..the Browns are considered by many to be losers.
Myles wants a legit shot at playing for and with A WINNER..!

Would you rather you come to the boards and see "0" posts every day until pre-season? We know the "why", you aren't a revolutionary in information. There are only 32 teams with 53/54 roster spots in the NFL, EVERY destination is a good destination. There are limited spots to go, very few beg to get out of Cleveland. Great facilities, despite what some outsiders say, it is a great destination city. Very cultural, great night life, yet very family friendly. When players are here, they love it here. Losing weighs on anyone, I'm not taking that away from you. MOST teams are "losers" without a QB. We need to find a QB, not a degenerate that quit on his current team, but someone to grow into a winning organization. This team is set up to win. We have state of the art facilities, an owner who wants to win"maybe to a fault" and is willing to spend what ever it takes to do so. We have a GM that knows how to manipulate the cap structure to maximize those dollars that Haslem gives him a blank check. Players get PAID in Cleveland. THAT is almost as important as winning. Bottom line is we NEED A QB. That isn't happening before at least the next draft, so if you don't mind, we will talk about useless stuff like California income tax until training camp opens and there is something real to talk about...

Right now for this season it is all about who starts.
Monken is pragmatic. He will start the quarterback he feels will execute the offense best.
Does he care about the future? Yes. But he has to live in the present. That means he runs practice and watches.
There is no fooling the players. Everyone knows who is doing what.
IMO it would be better for the team if Shedeur wins the job. If he begins the season then it is up to him to keep the job. If he doesn't playing DW is an easy decision. A change is made because the results are not good enough.
Then we will have a more complete picture about Shedeur.
Starting DW is different because no matter the results. How can the Browns give him an extension? And what have you learned about Shedeur? Ok he got beat out. But you have not learned if he will perform better in a new offense and with better talent around him.
The future for both players is questionable. But Shedeur has more upside. He is younger. He is not dealing with the injuries that DW has had. An Achilles that was torn twice. He also is getting paid a lot less.
If DW were to lead the team to SB that might change his future with the team. But let's be real. Looking good in OTA's means very little. DW I'm real games is a different story. His history in Cleveland is a player who looks done and is likely to be injured again.
Monken coaches the players. Berry handles the roster. However, communication between them is a necessity.
They know that the team is going to be digging deep into the QB class of 27.
What is best for the team?

Players get PAID in Cleveland. THAT is almost as important as winning. Really? At what point and to whom? You see, Myles has already made a fortune and has a guaranteed contract no matter where he plays. Do you really think that money matters since he will make the same amount no matter where he plays? At what point do you think players have enough money but are tired of losing? In this case he gets paid the same if he plays for a contender or not. So which one would you want to play for? That isn't happening before at least the next draft, so if you don't mind, we will talk about useless stuff like California income tax until training camp opens and there is something real to talk about... Yet another poster speaking for the collective we again. Talk about anything you like but football I suppose. Did you hear that The New England Patriots acquired three-time Pro Bowl wide receiver A.J. Brown from the Philadelphia Eagles? #football

Tell us, how is that philosophy is working out for the Browns..?..over the last 10 yrs. Well, Myles Garrett just broke the sack record.. I don't think the majority of the players lay down, with the exception of Watson, who most of us said would happen. What's your point? Because my point is, it's redundant without a QB. My statement was mainly about homegrown guys by the way. If you are drafted and perform, they don't mess around with you, they extend you.

I have reached the point where I really want Shedeur to win the starting job.
I simply do see a world where DW returns to the Browns roster next year.
Shedeur starting gives him the chance to swim or sink. If he sinks go ahead and put DW in.
If Shedeur plays well and continues to show improvement. Depending on how the season goes. It could change the team.
If he were to prove he is the guy. Well then the vision of the future changes. We have a load of picks and a bunch of money.
We can cut DW and swallow what is left to pay him.
The draft becomes about picking talent and value no matter the position. Go after the highest ranked players on the Board. Target certain guys. Move anywhere in the draft.
DW should be viewed as the fall back option to finish the season if Shedeur falls flat. Then get rid of him.

They don't have to get rid of him after the end of this season. His contract will be expired. All they have to do is no longer compete for his services.
