FEMA official who claimed he teleported to Waffle House ousted from agency, sources say

A top FEMA official who had drawn scrutiny for bizarre past remarks — including claiming he teleported to a Waffle House — has been pushed out of the agency, four sources tell CNN.

White House officials appointed Gregg Phillips in December to lead FEMA’s Office of Response and Recovery, one of the agency’s most consequential leadership roles, despite his history of promoting election conspiracy theories, particularly in the aftermath of the 2020 election. He came under national scrutiny in March after CNN reported on a cache of outlandish comments from his appearances on right-wing podcasts, including the teleportation claim.

The Department of Homeland Security, which oversees FEMA, confirmed Thursday that Phillips is leaving the agency, saying he is taking leave for personal reasons. But sources tell CNN the departure was not voluntary: New DHS leadership had grown weary of the embarrassment surrounding Phillips’ public image and of his periodic clashes with the department’s other leaders.

Even so, Phillips had won over some career FEMA officials. When he arrived, then-Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem and her de facto chief of staff Corey Lewandowski were taking aggressive steps to rein in FEMA, shrink the agency and bottleneck funding.

FEMA officials said Phillips stood out because he was willing to resist moves that would potentially hobble the agency’s work.

The Washington Post first reported Phillips’ departure.

CNN previously reported that Phillips described multiple incidents in which he said he had been physically teleported, including one in which he said he suddenly found himself at a Waffle House roughly 50 miles from where he had been moments earlier.

He later defended those remarks publicly, saying they reflected genuine spiritual experiences and citing biblical examples of supernatural transportation writing in one comment, “haters gonna hate.”

President Donald Trump later told CNN that Phillips’ claims “sounds a little strange” and said he would look into the matter: “I know nothing about teleporting or him, but I’ll find out about it right now.”

CNN also previously reported that Phillips had a long record of inflammatory public statements before joining FEMA, including violent rhetoric directed at political opponents, repeated promotion of false election fraud claims, and comments warning that migrants were coming to kill Americans while urging podcast listeners to arm themselves.

Governor Blasts Great American State Fair Over Confederate Flag in NC Booth

North Carolina Democratic Governor Josh Stein's office has condemned a display at the Great American State Fair in Washington, D.C., which included altered versions of the state flag featuring the Confederate's "Southern Cross."

The controversy erupted after journalist Reuben Jones posted footage from the North Carolina exhibit featuring two versions of the state flag with the Confederate battle emblem superimposed over the design.

A spokesperson for Stein said the video display of the flags misrepresented North Carolina and called on organizers to remove it.

"This display does not reflect the North Carolina that we love. America 250 is about unity and bringing our nation together. Glorifying this divisive Confederate symbol does the exact opposite. We demand the organizers stop dishonoring the flag of North Carolina," they said.

The exhibit is part of the Great American State Fair, an event celebrating the nation's upcoming 250th anniversary.

Newsweek has reached out to Freedom 250, the organizers of the fair, via email for comment.

A spokesperson for the North Carolina booth told Spectrum News that it had become aware of an "unapproved image in a video displayed inside the North Carolina Pavilion" on Friday. "As soon as we were made aware, we immediately removed the video and began reviewing how it occurred. Our focus remains on celebrating America’s 250th birthday and North Carolina’s role in our nation’s history.”

The video display, which showed the current North Carolina flag split with the Confederate flag, has since been removed.

The videos prompted criticism from historians, political figures and businesses participating in the North Carolina exhibit.

Stephen Jackson, a historian who specializes in North Carolina's past, wrote on X: "Unlike former flags from Georgia and Mississippi, the official flag of NC has NEVER incorporated the Confederate Battle Flag in its design. Shame on whoever is running this booth."

Democratic advocacy group Carolina Forward also criticized the display, posting: "So the privately-sponsored North Carolina booth at Trump's fair features not one, but two altered versions of the state flag with a big stars-and-bars on it. Disgusting."

Meanwhile, one of the exhibit's corporate sponsors, Mt. Olive Pickle Company, announced it was withdrawing after learning about the display.

In a statement shared by Jones, the company said: "Mt. Olive Pickle Company was invited to participate in the North Carolina exhibit for the Great American State Fair in Washington, D.C., as part of America's 250th celebration. We are proud of our North Carolina roots, and we agreed to be a part of an exhibit, as presented to us, that would represent the best of our great state.

"We were unaware that an image of the Confederate flag was included in a video as part of this exhibit, and we have withdrawn our participation. Our company stands on values of human dignity, opportunity, and freedom."

Mom who claimed vaccines killed twins now charged with murder

A woman in Idaho who claimed her twin toddlers died last year after receiving three vaccines has been arrested in connection with their deaths, law enforcement officials announced.

Police in Payette, a small town near the Oregon state line, said officers responded to a home on May 1, 2025, after receiving a report of a possibly deceased child.

“Upon arrival, officers discovered two deceased children, twin siblings, in a shared bed,” a Payette Police Department news release stated.

Investigators initially did not identify the mother of the children, later identified as Andrea Shaw, 23, and said the investigation was ongoing while the cause of death was to be determined by the Ada County Medical Examiner’s Office.

Days after the children’s deaths, Shaw and her husband appeared on a podcast funded by Children’s Health Defense, an anti-vaccine organization previously led by Robert F. Kennedy Jr., now the U.S. health and human services secretary, according to People.

During the podcast, Shaw claimed her twin toddlers died shortly after receiving several vaccinations.

More than a year later, the exact cause of death has not been publicly released. However, officials with the Payette Police Department said Shaw was indicted by a grand jury on two counts of first-degree murder in connection with the children’s deaths.

On June 30, she was located in Boise, taken into custody and booked into the Ada County Jail. Shaw is awaiting extradition to Payette, where she is expected to be arraigned on the charges.

“This arrest is the result of a lengthy and thorough investigation conducted by the Payette Police Department, with invaluable assistance from numerous partner agencies,” officials said in a statement. “The department extends its sincere appreciation to the Idaho State Police Forensic Services, the Ada County Medical Examiner’s Office, the Boise Police Department, the Payette County Prosecutor’s Office, the Payette County Coroner’s Office, and all other agencies and personnel who assisted throughout the investigation.”

I realize I'm gravitating towards the wrong part of the article, but look at how much smarts and effort it takes to address a little bit of stupidity.

As it pertains to this particular story you may feel that way. But as it pertains to the times we are living in I think it's a very critical point that needs to be made.

We live in a time where the head of our government just lies all the time and it takes time as well as resources to prove they are lies rather than have the man making the accusation prove his statements are the truth.
