I certainly think Monken is in an unenviable position. I get the fact that there are only 32 NFL HC'ing jobs but still. Considering his display at the end of yesterdays practice I think he may be beginning to realize that and the frustration may be showing as a result.

Yes, I've seen both cerebral and emotional coaches win. I don't think either one indicates "this is the right and only way to win". I have just seen posters indicate that without showing your emotions it is a bad thing when that's not necessarily true.

I actually agree with this on Gabriel - he's got the highest floor in terms of making mistakes. He sucks and won't make plays, but he won't do dumb stuff either

"First down inside the 10. A score here will put us in the Super Bowl. Jeudy is far to the left as Njoku settles into the slot. Tillman is flanked out wide to the right. Judkins and Ford are split in the backfield as Flacco takes the snap ... Here we go."

With just a little protection and some legitimate WR's you never know. But certainly nothing about him screams "sucks".

PIT = Considering his display at the end of yesterdays practice I think he may be beginning to realize that and the frustration may be showing as a result.

Can you tell me what happened or put some context to this? I have not seen anything.

Dawgs4Life = He sucks and won't make plays, but he won't do dumb stuff either.

I think Gabriel could make some dumb plays, he is still young. I think the "He sucks/won't make plays" is a bit harsh. It might be proven to be true but he played against some good defenses with a bad OL and WR and a conservative KS calling the shots ... who knows what he was asked to do. I's like to see him when asked to go deep and judge those results for themselves.

Yes, maybe saying he sucks is harsh - I will soften that a bit by saying he cannot be a good QB in this league IMO. His arm strength, size, and lack of athleticism will be too much to overcome. He's Cody Kessler IMO

Apparently at some point near the end of practice there were a number of procedure issues with both SS and DW.

They could not get the plays off. People may not have been lined up correctly. Or, corrections were not called out.

Monken got pissed. Threw his walkie talkie and ended practice.

This is still early and stuff like that is going to happen. The OL is all new. There are many new players on offense. The qbs are splitting reps.

They have to learn cadence changes.

It is not a big deal. However, it is expected when DW has not played in two years and SS has played 7 games in another offense.

This is where we are on offense.

Well I like that from Monken. Personally.

Hopefully it is to make a point and not "typical" - but it certainly sends a message to the QB's and the whole team.

** Edit - we needed that when a certain "star" WR didn't know where the F to line up and had to constantly be told by his QB ... right before he ran the wrong routes and 'got wide open'. Yes ... I definitely like Monken's intolerance of that incompetence.

Over his career Monken's offenses have ranked in the middle of pre-snap penalties.

In an early press conference he plainly stated that he hates "sloppy football" and it is a reflection on bad coaching.

Monken was hired to fix the offense. He knows that.

There are some good young players on offense. I expect improvement.

But I am not expecting a drastic immediate improvement.

The quarterback touches the ball on every play. He carries a big responsibility for how the offense works.

And as of today we don't have a starter.

His clear arm strength on his college tape which I have posted more than once proves a lack of arm strength in incorrect. It also shows his ability to scramble when needed. That along with his accuracy to covered WR's. Not saying he is Lamar Jackson but how many NFL QB's are?

It appears I need to show these again.

1st and 2nd team offenses had horrible finishes to practice.

They must. That's the only explanation I can come up with.

He does show good arm strength and ability to scramble in those videos. The problem is he just doesn’t LOOK the part of an NFL QB. Maybe we have a diamond in the rough. I’m willing to keep an open mind at this point.

Let me guess. You're basing it on that one OSU game? Or better yet now you're going to claim to be some closet Oregon and Oklahoma fan and followed him in college.

rofl

BTW- It's "you're".

No. I watched him playing QB for the Browns last year. He either could not see the field or refused to throw down the field or doesn't have the arm to throw down the field. I guess if you like dink and dunk play from your QB he is you're guy!!!

So none of the highlights in the entire two season matter because you saw him start 6 games for the Browns? I'm not surprised you think that way.

I see a hell of a lot of those 45 to 55 yard right on target throws.

No. I watched him playing QB for the Browns last year

No you watched him run for his life last year as a rookie, and still put up better numbers than any other Browns QB.

Quote
He either could not see the field or refused to throw down the field.

Just how well does any QB throw the ball down the field while A laying on their back, B having 3 or 4 defenders in their face 2.0 seconds after the snap. C with no WR open on the field.

Judge not Brother least you be judged.

DOD, I think Gabriel has shown he has a pretty strong arm in college, but you're right, he certainly didn't use it last season. I'm guessing that is the responsibility of Stefanski & Co. when it comes to play calling, just now sure the reason(s) why they chose to use him the way they did.

He did not throw picks. That is the only good things you can say about him. Overall stats he and Sanders threw the same amount of TD's and Sanders had higher yards per completion and he was able to throw the ball down the field. Sanders did not play well last year by any stretch of the imagination but his ability to throw the ball down the field and make some plays 7 of the Browns top 10 most explosive plays came with Sanders at QB is what separated the 2 of them. That and even though Sanders is short for a QB he is 3 inches taller and has a stronger arm.

We get it. He threw just as many td's as Sanders did but only 2 int's and you think that isn't something good you can say about him. I suppose if you ignore all of his college career you could say Sanders has a stronger arm. And let's just pretend none of that had anything to do with the play calling. And on and on it goes......

Zach Jackson has said that many times watching both QB's throw during camp.... Gabriel was a terrific college QB. You can get away being tiny in college not the NFL.
