I don’t like it either. But here’s what they could be thinking: if you bench Watson from the start or just banish him, you still have to keep him on the roster, but you won’t be able to use him. At that point, your only real backup is Dillon Gabriel. But Gabriel is the only one of the four that you can cut. We know you can’t get Greene through the practice squad, and you don’t want to cut him. So the only way to not keep four quarterbacks on the roster is to get something out of Watson. If you let him play, and he stinks, which he will, you still could go back to him in an emergency.

and honestly, it doesn’t even matter if DW somehow wins the Super Bowl. HUH? I think if the Browns win the SB this year and it was mostly/largely down to Watson, many/most fans would probably say the trade was worth it. He's only been a fan a few years, he doesn't know about the real pain. He decided to start watching some football and picked our name out of a hat.

I'm kind of excited for this season now. Not that I expect any great results. This is a rebuild, again. It is going to get really ugly before Christmas.
But the Sanders Media Machine is pretty darned entertaining. They suspend all the pesky facts and just pick and choose the stats, emotions, and weaponized ignorance to push an agenda. You can't tell me that the so-called sports writers who are so emotionally invested in this thing aren't getting some kind of consideration from the Sanders Brand. When he finally does get to see the field, which he will, the media buzz will shift to how awful the coaching is and how they are setting up the most gifted quarterback ever to play the game for failure. I don't know how or why an NFL Coach would put up with the circus given the level of his play. At this point Sanders is providing nothing but grief for the public facing side of the team. He must be one heck of a teammate for them to put up with it from a 5th rounder.
I really hope I'm wrong. If they catch that lightning in a bottle and go on a winning streak I will lose my mind with joy. The way things look right now I'm expecting at least three, maybe four, starting QBs for the Browns this year. You're right. The story lines could make it much more entertaining than most rebuild years! (Do we call them rebuild years or do we just call them "years" 🤣)

I'm just curious about one thing that puzzles me. Going into the game last weekend Monken had Sanders start. We were all told that there had been no decision on who the starting QB was up to that point. We all saw Sanders clearly outplay watson in that game and it wasn't even close. We even saw another of watson's ground balls that hit the turf about six yards downfield well short of where the WR was. That's one point where fans booed him but rather than admit his responsibility for it he blamed the fans.
But at any rate, Sanders clearly outplayed watson. If in fact Sanders playing much better than watson wasn't going to change the decision to start watson, why the charade?
If the body of work to that point made the decision, then the decision was already made before that game against the Bills.

I don't get much entertainment value from the storylines being reported in the national media (or even local media, to an extent). They don't understand half the context and they're just filling airtime by piling on the Browns. We are fans so only we can pile on.

Probably so.
SS got the start. Monken had laid it out beforehand. So that was the plan.
However, Monken factored in the entire off season, all the practices, film work, etc.
IMO the big test was the practice with the Bills. DW played with the first string against the Bills first string.
We only could read what that practice looked like. But I think Monken was influenced the most by that day.
IMO SS got a fair shake. He is just not that good.
Monken wanted to make sure every player got a fair chance to win a starting job.
I would love to ask Monkin how much tape he watched of DW in a Brown's uniform.
Therein lies the reality.
When the real games happen and he faces a true defense. He will fracture like a dropped mirror.

That's a good point about watching watson practice with the 1's against the 1's in practice.
Which then still begs to question, if he knew that before the game why did he trot Sanders out there as the starter when that time could have been used playing the already determined starter?
And before anyone gets defensive I'm not trying to use that as some huge negative against Monken. I just can't understand if your starter was predetermined before the game why put on the dog and pony show? I mean obviously how the two played in that game made no difference in who the named starter was.

Monken told everyone the plan to play both as starters in the pre-season.
Even if in his mind the decision was made. SS was going to start.
Neither guy in the that game played with the first string. Both coaches agreed about that.
Same as this week.
My thoughts are DW did let his true emotions surface. It can happen to anyone. His attempt to clarify was what he should have said originally.
Therein lies the problem. He is not comfortable in his own skin. He has not reached the point where he can face it is all about performance.
It always has been. No matter what he ever did in Cleveland fans have a right to believe what they want. Given the dark cloud around him. He was never going to be popular as a player. Just the opposite.
However, play to your paycheck and win. He would have been cheered by the fans who go to games. He still will be if he performs.
He will never be Nick Chubb no matter what he does. He has to accept that.
I try to be objective from on the field results. He has been the worst rated quarterback when he has played.
I don't give a damn about pre-season OTA's, practice and pre-season games.
I think he stinks as a quarterback and don't think that will change.

If the body of work to that point made the decision, then the decision was already made before that game against the Bills. It's just bizarre all the way around. Every time I think I can put a finger on it, there seems to be a new narrative to digest. Here's the one thing that stays in my mind, I think it's probably the driving force behind everything. Shedeur is that employee that seems to take forever to learn the job but always has his head down and is working. Every time he screws up - he apologizes. Every time there is accountability to be had - he raises his hand and says "that's on me". He is a dream employee from nearly every aspect... except he can't seem to learn the job. I think the charade was actually a carrot. A carrot they decided they would leave out in front of Shedeur as long as possible to see if he wakes up one day and everything begins to click. They probably knew before Saturday's game but decided to give Shedeur the start he was promised. I'm sure they didn't expect the results to be that drastically different between he and Watson though. Once we stacked even more ambiguity, with Watson's comments to the media, someone said "enough!". Probably Monken. Charade is over, this is turning into a Soap Opera. Name the starter, read Deshaun the riot act, put him back in front of the media for a formal apology and get ready for the season. And at the PC, Monken basically stated the truth in no uncertain terms... "We felt, over the course of training camp, and the off-season he (Watson) was ahead of Shedeur. Shedeur has closed that gap, for sure, and that's a credit to him."

I appreciate your post. I think the only point we really disagree on is that the reason he gave for starting Sanders in that game was under the disguise there was still an actual competition in regards to who the starting QB would be and as we saw that was proven to be false. As I posted earlier I'm not trying to use that as some huge negative against Monken.

That is your fair opinion.
We all saw that SS had a long way to go from the seven games he played. He was a fifth round selection for many reasons.
But none of us were witness to what Monken saw everyday.
It is speculation that he is a "slow learner." He had lots to work on. He did improve.
I do believe Monken told DW the truth. Play well. We are all judged by performance. Face it straight on.
So, here we go.
DW is getting the chance to see if he can perform. More than likely SS will get his chance as well.
Most likely outcome is the Browns will draft a quarterback in 27.

I would like to think Todd Monken used two factors in his decision. Which QB does he think gives his team the best chance to win. He chose Watson. If Watson is not good enough and the team fails to win is sitting Sanders as the Oline gel, as the new weapons get accustomed to the offense and the inserting him later better for his development long term in trying to identify him as a future franchise QB. If that is his thought process, I see no issue.
What I think the decision says. Sanders is not a franchise QB. Then playing Watson provides a benefit if he were to miss time due to injury and most QB's do miss time for injury, they have insured his salary and can apply for reimbursement of some of his salary if he can't play due to injury. Looking at it as a salary cap relief issue knowing the team is not going to win this year.

I wonder what the run pass ratio will be this year ? I can see Monken going run heavy with a short controlled passing attack

So a game plan perfectly suited for Dillon Gabriel then? At least according to some.

I'm guessing the 5-9 part is an indication of the route tree on that play call. lol

So I just saw that neither DW nor SS are starting the finale. I thought the 3rd game was the dress rehearsal. Don't DW and SS need all the starting reps they can get? Like, they've sacrificed a ton of reps by splitting and just about everything on the O is new... why not maximize the starters, even for a couple series? Why just toss the opportunity away?
I like Monken and I suspect he's in a tough spot but some of these decisions are head scratchers. If we come out looking like keystone cops in the first couple (per usual), they're going to wish they spent the time.
That said, I'm excited to see Green in the 3rd & 4th quarters.

I think he stinks as a quarterback and don't think that will change. It's all about "performance," but I think fans have a hard time separating his performance from the result of a play. Some of that is the nature of the QB position. But it does feel, to me, that in his case there is frequently some extra prevailing bias. I think part of his frustration is that what the coaching staff is grading his performance on isn't the results that the fans are seeing. He can't run the routes for his receivers or catch it for them. He can't block for his linemen. He can only expect them to do their jobs as they're supposed to. He was let down pretty badly by the bottom of the roster that they had him playing with. When you're playing with guys that have been with the team for 3 days and don't run their routes right, it puts you in a bad situation. They can look open but if they're running well short of the sticks when they're supposed to be past them on 3rd down, what do you do? Do you throw it and concede to punting or do you go to the next read in the progression? Do you give the guy down the field a shot or do you keep holding onto the ball after you're supposed to have it out? A QB shouldn't not throw the comeback because the WR might (then does) fade away from the ball allowing the defender to get in on the resulting catch point. Don't get me wrong. He was still bad enough on his own in other moments. But I can understand the frustration of things beyond one's control going wrong and catching all the blame for it. For as bad as DeShaun has been statistically during his time here, Shedeur was worse. Shedeur may have had higher highs, but overall he graded out worse. Hopefully, he can keep working and bring up the floor. I kind of wonder how big a part of our offense the QB run game is going to be early. Win ugly early with Watson getting the hell beat out of him on designed runs while continuing to try to get Shedeur up to the standard.

I think he stinks as a quarterback and don't think that will change. That’s a great post! Tom Brady talked about talent, mental toughness, and emotional maturity as the three key ingredients for success. Talent alone will only take you so far. That’s also in my opinion Andrew Berry’s biggest blind spot. He can evaluate talent and recognize it when he sees it, but when it comes to assessing mental toughness and emotional maturity, he’s often completely lost.

No need to throw them out there against backups fighting for roster spots. We have to figure out the bottom of our 53 as well. Cut down day is 6PM Sunday. Joint practices seem to kind of be treated as of more importance now.
