Ive watched the Browns for over 50 years and never left early or turn the TV off. It's only one game but this group has done nothing good and looks like a crummy college team. I hope we lose out and take the next great savior of a QB we can ruin. Of course they will pick the WRONG QB anyway
- The Browns and their radio partners (show hosts) at 92.3 and 850, tried desperately to hoodwink the fans into convincing everyone that Watson was the best choice to play. Watson is beyond garbage.
- The defense is terrible. Lawrence absolutely shredded this defense and the Jags could have scored 50 points without breaking much of a sweat had they wanted to.
- Completely undisciplined and sloppy play. I expected this after seeing Freddy 2.0 have temper tantrums in TC and ending practices early.
- Nothing redeemable about this game. They are a JV organization from top to bottom.
- Congrats to Todd for fleecing Haslam out of millions of dollars. That will be some incredible thoroughbreds and training for his horse racing passion.
I am disappointed, too. But part of our reason for guarded optimism coming in was the general consensus that Jacksonville isn’t really as good as they looked last year. Well, maybe they are. Maybe we just got manhandled by a legitimate 13-4 team on the road.
Defense looked like it did in preseason. Slow and alot of missed tackles.
Our offensive line could not get a push in the running game at all.
Watson played just like i expected him to.
My original prediction for this game was 38-10 jags. I was close unfortunately

DW was not an ALL PRO, but posters have said correctly JAGs owned both lines- Conception fumbles and loses ball great field position for Jags. NO ONE could cover JAGS Washington, he smoked us all day. No pressure on QB from our line.......game over in first Qt.....obvious better team won.
Baker had two fumbles for Bucs, scooped up for six points and fumbled into the end zone-- lost by six, 50 mil QB cost them the game.

At the same time it was pointed out just how poorly the FA signings on the OL were rated in run blocking and with this QB room, if you can't run the ball you just added insult to injury.
They have an entire new coaching staff on both sides of the ball at every position. Entire new systems on both sides of the ball. With an established system you have veterans that can work with and be an example in familiarizing the rookies and new FA signings and makes their transition easier and more fluid. This team currently has none of that.
So the only hope I have left in my bag of tricks is with all those things being considered, the Browns will improve as the season progresses. That the players will become familiar with the O and D systems to the point they can execute them with some degree of competence.
Am I confident any of that will happen? No. Do I believe the odds of that happening are good? No.

Hate to say it... I couldn't be happier with the results. The Browns likely will be in a position to grab a top QB in the draft. Their FA list is pretty small and should have around 25-26mill to resign/sign players in the offseason. It's the trainwreck we need before we can have a serious football team again.

The morning after - I am most disapointed with Monken and how sloppy and ill-prepared the team were. We had a (virtually) penalty free preseason game which I took as a good sign, this game was the opposite. If this sort of performance continues then the Freddy comparisons will be apt and on the money.
I can watch a well coached team with a bad QB struggle through the season and grin and bear it. I don't know if I can stomach watching a team struggle while also enduring incompetant coaching each week.

I wonder what the dynamic is like in the organization? I can see Jimmy and Berry being more than happy going 1-16 or 2-15 and getting the first pick in the draft. I didn't want to believe that Monken was taking orders to start Watson ... but having watched that game, the delayed penalties, failed execution etc, it's really hard to believe Sanders is worse.

I think Monken just wanted to give the "pro" his last shot. Put up or shut up and we can be done. I think that Shedeur being a basic mental-man-child helped make that an easy decision to start the season. Whether you like him or not, it is a lot for a first time HC to walk in and see a QB room that may as well be a clown car. And yes, he wants to win as well.

We were starting 2 rookie OL, a shell of a man at QB, and a new system for everyone. We sucked but it’s not the end of the world. Yes, we didn’t look prepared but I actually put that more on DW being rattled. He just wasn’t pulling the O together, he was losing his cool so the OL was losing it, etc.
We all know that DW is little more than a tackle dummy at this point until they feel they can set up SS for some modicum of success. I doubt we’ll be markedly better with SS but we won’t be much worse. We knew these first 2 games were the lemon suckers of the season. They’ll start to get more organized in these next few. I can almost guarantee we’ll look better against the bucs. I won’t say we’ll win, but we should respond positively. And if he/ we don’t, I can’t see them trotting DW out for the home opener.

My take on the game. Yes we looked bad. I didn't think we would win but I didn't think we would look this bad. A new OL and coaches. Pretty much a new WR room. New System on O. New DC. New D system. No Myles but he wouldn't have been playing anyway with his injury. We have TOO MANY moving parts at this point so to speak. It's going to take some time. I believe TM was correct post-game when he said we will get better every week. Oh, and we have DW who I believe is no longer a starting NFL QB. I watched Jaxson Dart last night and it made me sick knowing we could have had him. Without DW and his contract and those 3#1's we gave up we might have had our FQB now.
Fortunately, I had to cook at the VFW yesterday so I didn't get to see the crapfest,but I got constant updates.I have to say they were hilarious.There are 2 guys that I positively can't stand and they have been saying that Monkin is the perfect HC for this team.I agree,he's a blowhard of a coach that fits in well with Haslam and Berry. Browns fans need to understand that the Jags were one of the best teams in the NFL last season and might be a Super Bowl contender this season.
The Browns are one of the worst teams in the NFL and have been the bottom feeders of the AFC North in 2024 & 2025. For 2026, the Browns have a new coaching staff with a first time HC who is attempting to teach his young team a new offensive and defensive systems.
I expect the Browns to improve week to week but I don't expect many 'wins'.
In an effort to manage expectations I'm going to classify the 2026 Browns as being equal to an "expansion team" that is in the first year of a rebuild.

In the 2025 draft the Giants and Browns had close to the same draft assets and team needs.
Once Cam Ward was selected. The Giants passed on the quarterbacks and selected Abdul Carter. They came back in the first round through a trade and at pick 25 drafted Dart.
We traded back and took Graham. Then took Carson and Q in the second.
Both teams passed on SS when they needed a quarterback.
We drafted some good players. The Giants just beat the Cowboys with Dart.
At this point in time we really cannot say how this will turn out. But the Giants and Browns made different choices.
When you need a quarterback all other choices take a back seat.
Until Andrew Berry is removed as GM ..this franchise will be the darlings Of the seller im the North. And there is a GM in waiting in Tom Talserro. Who is a consultant now. And Ryan Grigson is a candidate . Andrew Berry continues to get a pass around here . How's Tyler Shough looking these days ? Better than any Browns current QB
an example of how things can be skewed easily by stats.... His QB Rating for the game was 97.7 ... that sounds like he had a pretty decent game. However, remove that lone meaningless TD and his rating drops to a more accurate description of his performance at 69.5

At halftime during the game against the Jacksonville Jaguars, Deshaun Watson had a passer rating of 45.4. By the break, he had completed 8 of 13 passes for 75 yards, zero touchdowns, and one interception, while taking two sacks as the Browns fell behind 24–0.
It did look impressive as I stated but I realize it was long after the game was decided and probably against backups. It would have been VERY impressive if he did it in the 1st quarter!
First let me say it's far too early to have some firm opinion on Monken as a whole. It's only been one game. But my comment to this point is simply this.
What most people saw yesterday is not what they expected to see. I'm not saying they were looking for a win. I'm not even saying they were looking for the game to be close.
What I am saying is most people from what I have seen at the very least expected a well disciplined team. Free from all of the sloppy mistakes we have seen in the past. For some reason they seemed to feel that stern looks, tough talk and bravado would change all of that. How someone giving off that impression could suddenly change the culture on a dime. It's what they had been screaming for.
That's not how any of this works. Coaches of all styles have both succeeded and failed. Sometime tough guys fail and players coaches succeed. Sometimes it's the other way around. You're dealing with pro athletes, not children. There is no one size fits all formula for success when it comes to the demeanor of your HC.

Schwartz's D held good teams in check and got bamboozled by a couple of bad offenses last year.
Schwartz is NOT unemployed. He is getting paid by the Browns right now. We didn't let him out of his contract, and a team would have had to give up a draft pick to get him.
I was more disappointed in the defense than I was the offense. My expectations for the O were set extremely low, and even though they failed to meet that low bar, the defense underperforming was more frustrating to watch. Additionally, the comments from Tyson Campbell about running more zone coverage got me really angry. It boggles my mind how supposed pro-level coaches consistently play our talent in ways that minimize strengths and maximize weaknesses.
PFF scores would indicate the rookie WRs and new Olinemen played well. That didn't contradict what I saw, but I also was only able to watch the majority of the first half (son had a baseball game) and I'm in ways an Oline expert. Rookies, 2nd year guys, and Oline looking like they're going to stick is why I'm watching this year. Fano largely gets a pass from me this season. Young man has a tough assignment for a rookie.
I hope Watson gets at least a couple more games. I'd rather he be the one back there while the rest of the offense works to get their proverbial feet under them. It also increases the likelihood of him suffering a season-ending injury and us recouping more salary cap, which is up there for turning around our QB room. No, I don't feel bad for thinking/saying that.
I saw that Austin Barber was our top OL by a good margin. Gabi was 3rd with a so so grade. I didn’t watch OL, anyone see where the pressure was coming from? Also, the book on Zion was penalties… and he lived up to it.

Monken is sixty years old. He comes from a coaching family. He has been a coach for most of his life.
He knows both college and the NFL. He knows what good and bad quarterback play looks like.
I wonder if he reviewed that tape of DW as a Brown? I know he wanted to give everyone a clean slate.
But if he did not review the tape of DW as a Brown. He did a mis-service to himself.
The guy that played against the Jags and the guy that played two years ago for the Browns is the same guy.

Monken will watch the tape. He will play DW against the Bucs. If he plays the same. Monken will have no choice really.

Monken evaluated this quarterback battle with fresh eyes. In fact, the first-year head coach said that he didn't and still hasn't watched any film on Watson from his disastrous stint with Cleveland.
"I really, to be honest, haven't looked at it," Monken said. "To be honest, only from afar. People say, 'Well, you had to look at it.' Well, not really. I looked at it from afar when I was down the road in crossover film or something, but I try to take everything at face value. What I see, right? It doesn't matter what the player is; I think we owe that to our players, guys that are on the roster.
"I want to go into it thinking every player we have is elite. And all they have to do is prove me right. That's all they have to do. They are on an NFL roster, I expect them to play well, and I just want them to prove me right. So I haven't really looked at that. Different staff, different system. We'll let it play out. We'll see where it goes..."
I don't know how much tape Monken watched or how relevant it is to the conversation, tbh.
Watson was rusty in 2022 after his layoff and looked like c.f.s.
Watson showed a few glimpses in 2023 before a shoulder sidelined him. Upon return, the shoulder was reinjured and doctors said it could literally fall apart. Story was he wanted to play but that was a medical impossibility. Also, that year, he developed a pretty strong rapport with Amari Cooper.
His return in 2024 (pre-Achilles disaster) was with a team that had a patchwork line, a regressing defense and Amari Cooper dropping an incredible 30% of his targets. Also, let's not forget no Nick Chubb.
I would say, looking at all of that, tape or no tape, Watson was going to get a fair shot at the starting role. I'd also say, compared to Shedufus, he deserved it. I threw up a little in my mouth typing that, but it's true.

I know there's more to it than "zone = bad, man = good... more man-coverage means more good" but it feels like the concern about a significant departure from the defensive schemes and approach THAT PROVED OVER A SEASON WORKED was warranted. I am continually baffled on how we keep bringing these coordinators in that insist on trying to pound square pegs into round holes.
We literally had to change nothing from Schwartz's system, kept his heir apparent on staff, and still reverted back to the thing that we proved in 2024 absolutely, definitely wasn't working.
By not doing so all he had to go on was practice and pre season. And you know what they say about practice..............
At this point the best way I can deal with what I have seen thus far is to add a little levity to the situation. It may be very little levity but still.

Once again, it feels like watching a train wreck unfold in slow motion. Wrong choices. Wrong decisions. Terrible communication.
No matter how we analyze the reasons behind this mess, every consequential decision ultimately leads back to the people in charge—and I’m not talking about Todd Monken, who has so far done an excellent job serving as the gatekeeper for Dumb and Dumber.
How are we supposed to evaluate our young players if they’re never even given a proper opportunity to show what they can do?
And what do we think constant losing does to the confidence and mentality of these young players?
Anyone who believes this is competent management should start asking why the results remain so consistently awful—and why the rest of the NFL can’t stop laughing as they watch this annual train wreck unfold.
I think the entire team gave up after the Watson INT, or at least that really defeated them. Jags literally pinned us down from that point on
"First down inside the 10. A score here will put us in the Super Bowl. Jeudy is far to the left as Njoku settles into the slot. Tillman is flanked out wide to the right. Judkins and Ford are split in the backfield as Flacco takes the snap ... Here we go."
The Browns played zone coverage on 74% of their defensive snaps. Ward is a man corner. The Browns traded for Campbell because he was lousy in zone coverage (which the Jags were running) and why he was a better scheme fit for the Browns, whom were running man coverage last year. Rookie DC for the Browns decides to revert to zone coverage instead of playing to the players strengths. Brilliant!
I had to stop reading and listening to all the bloggers and analysts who all call out that Watson was the sole reason for the Browns lost.
I'm pretty sure it wasn't Watson who scored the 34 points for the Jags. Listening to everyone who hates Watson saying SS would have been the better choice.
I'll just keep that for another day.
Play calls were coming in late, as Watson and Monken both mentioned.
The O-line is so young and hasn't had time to gel. Watson was trying to get up and change the call and there was no time for him to do that.
It's one game out of 17 with a whole new everything going on.
I'll watch game by game and hope to see improvements from Coaching to player improvements.
I'm not even on the ledge yet, so I don't need anyone talking me off of it. I'll give it a few more games until I see where my feet are standing... LOL
All good DD. The Browns have made every effort to build an offense for DW.
None worked. Ken Dorsey was brought in to customize the office to his skills.
KS and AVP tried as well.
The DW from Clemson and Houston is no longer. That guy is now 31 with injuries.
DW is finished IMO. You can see self doubt. His press conferences are revealing. His lack of confidence is apparent.
His reactions while playing and his body language is not one of a leader. He retreats in the pocket from shotgun and under center like a rabbit. His drops are way too far.
He does not step up with eyes downfield. He runs away to avoid hits.
After this season I doubt he plays in the NFL again.
However, IMO he should have studied the tape. Then when practice started he would have had a frame of reference.
You look at the past to find answers for what could occur in the present.
Zak Jackson of the Athletic gets to attend all team practices. He has seen DW since he became a Brown.
During OTA's and throughout Camp. He continually said DW looked the same - awful.
It is not a matter of him starting. The options were not there to start anyone else. Throw DW out there and see where it goes.
What we saw against the Jags is the same guy we have seen.
I am not surprised by his performance at all.
I was more disappointed by the play of the defense.

Been thinking about this. It takes me back to college scouting and draft days, teams that are in need of a QB.
I feel most of us know that an NFL team will pick a QB in the draft due to his play and the success he had in his college career.
Seems many of the time the team picks this QB then wants to change him into a player he wasn't at the college level.
Rookie, in college did his best scrambling and making plays on his ways..
Rookie, this coaching staff wants you to play how we want you to play. Stand in the pocket, take the step backs we tell you too.
Yes we drafted you to be someone totally different then who you are.
I feel it's the system. The system will be what most likely help the QB succeed or fail.
That may be what Monk is thinking. Why watch tape on a pro QB in a system that really might not of been good for him.
Let's not waste time, let's see what he can do for the system that this coaching staff wants to see him in.
Idk, I just think Watson deserves more than one game as much as all the O-lineman and defensive players do.

I trust your judgment, and what you’re saying makes sense. But if we follow that logic to its conclusion, we’re basically admitting that the people running this organization aren’t just on different pages — they’re reading completely different books.
The owner wants the flashy name and get some value on his fantastic investment.
The GM believes in analytics and has his own vision for how this roster should be built.
Then they hire a 60-year-old first-time head coach.
Then they go back to a questionable quarterback who has barely played football in almost two years because of injuries and basically say, “Yep, this is the guy. Let’s build around that.”
They rebuild almost the entire offensive line and draft young, explosive playmakers.
So far, fine. You can make an argument for each individual move.
But then comes the part I don’t understand.
You put all these pieces together and somehow create a situation where the young playmakers barely get a chance to show what they can do, while the offense depends heavily on a quarterback who hasn’t played meaningful football consistently in almost two years.
And despite all those changes, you barely use training camp and preseason to actually test whether the whole thing works together.
That’s the part I can’t get past.
New O-line. New coaching staff. Young skill players. A quarterback coming back from a long injury absence. New system.
…and apparently the best time to find out whether all the pieces actually fit is when the games count.
That doesn’t mean every decision was stupid. Some of them might actually turn out to be very good decisions.
The problem is that I’m struggling to see how all these decisions belong to the same plan.
That’s why “dysfunctional” keeps coming to mind.
Not because everyone in the building is incompetent, but because the overall direction looks like all decision makers trying to assemble the same IKEA kitchen while using five different instruction manuals.
That’s the Browns part I’m having trouble understanding. Or I’m the idiot and the Browns actually want to end the season without any success whatsoever. Then it make sense.
The Browns organization recognizes what they have on the roster.
The OL is a work in progress and more changes will come. They have drafted offensive weapons TE, RB, WR.
The defense will need to continue to be invested in. Pass rush is always a goal.
They know that finding a quarterback is the number one mission. They don't believe in DW or SS obviously.
They have positioned the team to draft a quarterback. This year is a throw away year. Their record does not matter. They know they are not a playoff team.
Berry could have selected Tyler Shough last year at 40. But nope. He waits till RDs 3 and 5 to select 2 career backups . And people wonder why this franchise cant get on track . It starts with Andrew Berry
Just a quick, obvious recap. Most of you already covered it. If DW won this QB competition then it's obvious the Browns have no QB. But is anyone really surprised by that?
For everyone crying about Schwartz not being here blah blah the defense blah blah Let's give the Jags credit. Its a good offense Schwartz feasted on weak offenses and middle of the road QBs. Jim Schwartz isnt Buddy Ryan . Last time I checked Hes unemployed right now .
The Browns front office simply failed to upgrade the QB position this year .there was options better than Watson .but dont worry Mary Kay Kool Aid And Nathan the Super Homer will paint a sunshine and lollipops picture This week .
He's unemployed because the Browns owned him for another year. Just because he quit, doesn't mean he can go coach another team, while the Browns retain his services for 2026.
List the options at QB in the 2026 off season that would have made this past Sunday better. Sanders? Maybe, still not sold.
Off the roster? Who would have made that giant leap to even a 3 point loss instead of a 24 point loss?
This team was lost and unless they look more like a professional team 17 weeks from now, I will do what I have never done before, champion a one and done for Monken. He preached the penalty issues of the past will be gone.. well, that was a fail, among many other issues...

I certainly won't dismiss your point here. I don't know if it's accurate or not but I can certainly see how someone may arrive at that conclusion.
I would say it's most likely one of two things. Either your opinion is correct and this entire team quit as soon as they was any sign of adversity or this coaching staff had them totally unprepared to take the field.
I mean when it comes to the O I get it somewhat. I wasn't expecting much from them because of the many reasons that have been posted. But I mean it was really, really ugly.
The D is a different animal all together. They took a HUGE step backwards! And what we know from witnessing last season as bad as that was, is that the talent on this D is much better than what we saw on the field against the Jags.
So on one hand we have to think or believe this team as a whole lacks any motivation at the first sign of adversity and they will just roll over and play dead. As I said above that's certainly a possibility. But at the same time that would indicate we have no leaders on this roster. No players that can rally the troops. And we would also have to believe that the players on this roster became pros and to the NFL level with no fortitude to fight back.
Or we would have to believe that this coaching staff lacks the ability to properly prepare and motivate this team at the fist sign of trouble.
I'm not sure which one would be worse.

I'm not giving up on Monken yet ... if things continue over the season like this then I'll be right there with you. In fact I think another 3 or possibly 4 games is enough to expect to see a difference in many aspects ... #1 amongst them being preparedness and not looking like the team doesn't have a clue.
The Party told you to reject the evidence of your eyes and ears. It was their final, most essential command.
