Wouldn't be a bad way to get Terrell Suggs into town for a visit either.

I thought about that as well. From what I understand Ryan is a players coach which would fit right into the coaching style in Cleveland.
I guess alot of this talk we'll be hinging on Ryans relationship with Savage.

A name thrown around on the OBR has been Pepper Johnson. He has ties with Romeo, so who knows?

More inportant is Ryans relationship with the Ravens. If he is passed over will he want out of Baltimore?

Really? Sweet. I mentioned him as a possibility in the other Grantham thread. Glad to see I'm not totally crazy. LOL. Here is his bio. Went to OSU, played a couple years for the Browns, was in NE with RAC and a Belichick disciple. Sounds good to me if he has enough experience and its decided Mel Tucker isn't the guy.

He's already out of Bmore ...he was fired last week along w/ Billick and rest of staff of course he has interviewed for job I heard.... cheaper to fire & rehire.....than promote within

Does Savage have a relationship with Ryan? I mean, I thought he got there the same year that Savage came here. Did they actually work together in Baltimore? Or were they two ships that passed in the night?

Go get him!
I love the way their D is designed. They crowd the line, disguise everything and overall give up this vibe of "we're coming, and we're gonna eat your children."

While I would think anyone would be ecstatic to get Rex Ryan, until Baltimore lets him go it is unrealistic. Ozzie does not have to let him interview for the same job with another team and he will not (especially for a division rival).
So, let us focus on some assistants across the league that we might be able to start looking at now:
1. Ron Rivera - LB coach for SD has to be upset at how everything with his HC aspirations played out and the Chicago mess. But, he has been very successful with helping run the 3-4 in SD and every defense he has been apart of has been a top 10 defense.
2. Billy Davis - LB coach for Az. He's from Youngstown, OH and his dad was director of player personel for the Browns. He was also the LB coach for us in '99...not that you can judge anyone from coaching that team. He's got the hometown feel, runs a 3-4 and I really like how the Az LB's progressed this season.
3. Darren Perry - DB coach for Oakland. He's a PA guy and a Steeler, but if you can get past that, he has a ton of talent and insight and is considered one of the brighter young coaches in the league. Not sure if he's ready for a DC spot though.
4. Dave McGinnis - LB coach for Tenn. He's older than most, but he's always been a highly regarded defensive mind and has had 4-3 and 3-4 teams in the past.
5. Greg Blache - DC Washington. But he has to answer to Gregg Williams, so if Mr. Williams isn't promoted to HC, then it would not be a lateral move for him to become our DC (leave it to washington to add a layer of hieararchy).
6. Pepper Johnson - DL NE. As discussed by others has ties to us and Romeo. Again, a bit light on experience thus far though.
7. Kurt Schottenheimer - DB GB. Oh, what's in a name. This guy is the best DB coach in the business IMHO and who doesn't want that on their team.

On December 31, 2007, Ravens head coach Brian Billick, along with the entire coaching staff, was fired after a disappointing 5-11 season. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rex_Ryanwe don't need Ozzie's permission, he's fair game

But he has a year remaining on his contract. It's a messed up NFL rule, but Ozzie can block him. http://www.baltimoresun.com/sports/football/bal-ryan0102,0,5485429.story?coll=bal_sports_highschool_baltimore_promo Although Ryan was fired, he technically has a year remaining on his contract. The Ravens might be able to block him from taking another defensive coordinator job under league rules. But the Ravens couldn't stop him from becoming a head coach, because it's a promotion.

Yes I know but I think that had more to do with personnel than scheme...they got old FAST.
Maybe it's just me but I think their D and the Steelers D is intimidating to look at just based on all the movement they show pre-snap.
We saw that a little more with our D near the end and it had a more desired effect. I do think Grantham's 3-4 scheme is horrible.

Would love Rivera. I wonder though how long he'd stick around...if the D improved, his name would be on the hot HC candidate list again...

9 total years w/Ravens...first 6 as a line coach, the last 3 as DC.He and Savage should know each other well.

He was fired, he didn't quit. I would think that by firing him they forfeit any right-of-first-refusal they may have held. Had he quit, then I would agree that they could block him from working elsewhere in a similar capacity.
Of course, without a copy of the contract in front of us, we can't know for sure.

I like the idea of going after Rex Ryan. He runs a 3-4, has a great defense, and he loves to BLITZ. Savage obviously has his connections with Ryan and I think it would be a great pick up for us. Not only does it help us, it hurts the Ravens.

He is also still going to work in the Baltimore Raven offices...for someone that was 'fired' it all seems a bit strange.
I definitely will not be complaining if I am wrong and we get him though.

Savage and Rex Ryan spent a great amount of time together during the senior bowl last year. as i said in the other thread, Rex is probably top of the list but he will likely see a head coaching offer.
Mel Tucker would be 2nd on that list but there will likely be a few more changes to the D staff either way especially at DL coach.

I actually have a copy of his contract here and it says he must come to the Browns, and his salary will be $19.48 a game and 2 bags of fritos.
I am unfamiliar with this feeling of optimism

I think it's a liitle weird to get fired and then be considered for a promotion,..I understand if it's a money thing,..but still. Hopefully he sees a team in Baltimore that has yet to hit rock bottom and doesn't want to be the sacrificial lamb when it happens. If he's looking out for his future,..the grass is much greener in Cleveland. ,..not to mention cleaner air, prettier women, and the food for some reason just tastes better as well.

How long has Ryan been within the Ravens' system? If he's been DC for a number of years, I would probably soil myself if we brought him in as a coordinator. For years the Raven's D has been carrying that team despite a lack of Offense.

Don't forget the sour cream and onion dip..... I think he might get the Baltimore job but that will depend on whether Garrett or Marty are taking any offers. I believe that Jason (Garrett) is going to be signed long-term with Dallas with the "so-called" talk coming out of Big-D that Phillips' job might be on the line if they don't win in the playoffs, so who knows for sure from here.....

I'll be a little surprised it we hire as big a name as Ryan. I would expect something along the lines of what we did with Chud. A couple mentioned Pepper Johnson. That wouldn't surprise me because that is the type of name I would expect.

We are at the point were we can bring in a big name. RAC is solid. Chud is solid. The offense kicks ass. We won 10 games. We're definately going hard after defensive improvements this offseason. A bigger name has everything here he needs to succeed. It's not a losing situation like '05 or even '06.
We are on the rise and a guy liky Ryan could be just what the doctor ordered. We may not score 29.8 points a game in '08, but with an experienced DC we likely won't give up 29.7 per game either.

The one reason i could see them passing on Ryan is he is already being concidered for head coaching positions. If you want a one year fix, then fine. But if you want some consistency, a lesser named guy probably fits a bit better. He probably has to coach a few more years before he is recognized as being head coach material. With success comes recognition, it didn't take long for people to start noticing Chud.
If Baltimore passes over him and takes someone else as head coach, i doubt Ryan returns to the ravens. Why would you want to return?? So it's the ravens choice first and then we'll see what happens.

Yes I know but I think that had more to do with personnel than scheme...they got old FAST.
Two things to keep in mind Ammo,,
1. Rex Ryan didn't start that Defense. He didn't build it. Ozzie and his staff found the guys but Marvin Lewis built it, then I believe it was Nolan that took over and finally Ryan. So all he did was inherit that D..
2. You say that they got old fast. I suppose I'd rather have young and getting better than old and losing it, but what makes you think that thier talent level is much different than ours. I'd say it's better at this point.,
Yet, they could stop virtually nobody..
Look, I'm not saying don't hire the guy. Hell, he may be perfect, but damn, that was some fast decisions.. I'd like to see what else is out there.. the guy I want had a less that steller talent level but consistently got them to play better than they were.. That's the guy I want. I'm not sure if Ryan is that guy.. But to be fair, Im not sure he isn't.

There was one part of Baltimore's defense I wish we could duplicate here ... and that's the fact that they gave up only 79 rushing yards per game and only 2.8 yards/carry, compared with our defense allowing 4.5 yards per carry, and 129.5 per game despite similar rushing attempts against them. (We had approx 1 extra rush against per game)

Yeah, that would be nice to duplicate that... Maybe Ryan is the right guy.. who knows.. It was reported that Ryan is the choice of the players in Baltimore and it's been reported that he's interviewed with Ozzie for the job.. so maybe he's not even gonna be available. Don't know.
Does anyone know if he's talking to Atlanta, Washington, Miami for HC jobs?
