Thought maybe he could use his own thread...This is from the home page.... Coaches Mel Tucker Defensive Backs Coach Year with Browns: 3rd Year in NFL: 3rd Mel Tucker is entering his third season as defensive backs coach. Last year, Tucker’s secondary unit was depleted with injuries, yet ranked 15th in the NFL in pass defense (202.6 ypg.). The secondary lost starters DB Daylon McCutcheon (knee) in training camp and DB Gary Baxter (patella) in Week 7 and DB Leigh Bodden missed seven games with a nagging ankle injury. Tucker worked with S Sean Jones, who emerged as a leader on the defense, and DB Daven Holly as they tied for the team lead with five interceptions each. In his first season with the Browns in 2005, Tucker led the secondary unit as the Browns ranked fourth in the NFL in pass defense (179.2 ypg). Tucker joined the Browns after spending the previous four seasons (2001-04) on Jim Tressel’s staff at Ohio State. Tucker coached defensive backs and was co-defensive coordinator during the 2004 season as he played an integral role in game preparation and strategy. Tucker grew up in Cleveland and played college football at the University of Wisconsin. Prior to joining the staff at Ohio State, he spent one year (1999) at the University of Miami (Ohio) and one season at LSU (2000), where he coached the defensive backs at both schools. In his four years at Ohio State, Tucker developed into an outstanding teacher and motivator and demonstrated the ability to get the most out of his players. He was regarded as one of the up-and-coming young coaches in college football. Two of Tucker’s Ohio State players – strong safeties Michael Doss and Will Allen – won first team All-America honors, while cornerback Chris Gamble was a second team All-American pick. Tucker prepped at Cleveland Heights High School and was a two-time member of the Cleveland Plain Dealer’s All-Scholastic team. He won All-Ohio honors in football as a senior and also enjoyed an outstanding basketball career. At Wisconsin, Tucker earned four letters as a defensive back. He graduated in the spring of 1995 with his degree in agricultural business management. He began his coaching career in 1997 as a graduate assistant under Nick Saban at Michigan State University. After two years in that capacity, he became defensive backfield coach at Miami (Ohio). He spent one year with the RedHawks, leaving after the 1999 season to re-join Saban who had moved on to LSU. Tucker was born Jan. 4, 1972, in Cleveland. Mel and his wife Jo-Ellyn, an attorney, were married in June of 1999. They have two sons, Joseph (2/18/02) and Christian (2/18/04). Coaching Background: 1997 Michigan State University, graduate assistant 1998-99 Miami (Ohio) University, defensive backs coach 2000 Louisiana State University, defensive backs coach 2001-04 Ohio State University, defensive backs coach/co-defensive coordinator 2005-07 Cleveland Browns, defensive backs coach If you notice his sons birthdays....I find this guy to be very consistant..... link

Just watching Channel three news,,, Jim Donovan seems to think that Tucker has the job already... Can't verify it, but that's what he's saying? I guess we will know soon..

Guys got a good resume as far as it goes I guess.. I suppose I'd have liked to have someone with more hands on DC experience. But again, so far, the changes that RAC and Savage have made as the years progress have been good,, very good in fact, so if this is who they choose, I'm gonna stick by them..

I think that IF Tucker becomes the new DC assuming he does, who gets the AX.
I can't believe that TG was operating on an island all by himself, he is sure to have his supporters. So the next question is who where they, and how long before they are shown the door as well??
My bet is that some of these guys are packing as we speak if MT is indeed the new DC. And hell they may be packing anyway, because RAC wants them gone regardless of who the new DC is..
Just thinking outload if you will, but where not done with this mess by a long shot, more changes are sure to follow, I think???

I agree Daman...Chud was young...and it seems to have worked......Molding the younger coaches around Phil and Racs ideas...seems to be the objective here...

Mel Tucker would be my first choice, all the players seem to play well for him and they seem to like him which is probably the most important part of coaching. I definatley think Mel is more than capable of taking over the reigns of our Defense.

Maybe I sould have posted this here,,,Whoops
Tucker named defensive coordinator Zac Jackson, Staff Writer 01.12.2008 Last January, the Browns struck gold by hiring a young coordinator who was an Ohio native and had previous ties to the Browns.
This year, they're hoping to do the same.
Mel Tucker was hired as the new defensive coordinator Saturday morning, a day after the team announced Todd Grantham would not return for 2008.
Tucker, who turned 36 last week, is a Cleveland Heights native who spent the last three seasons coaching the Browns' defensive backs. He was Ohio State's co-defensive coordinator in 2004, and prior to that had coached three previous years with the Buckeyes and also at LSU and Miami-Ohio.
His knowledge of the environment, the organization and the personnel made him a strong candidate to be promoted from within.
"We are excited to have Mel as our defensive coordinator," Browns coach Romeo Crennel said. "He has a football plan, a life plan, coaches the fundamentals and relates well with the players. I believe he will be successful in this new role."
Tucker takes over a defense that ranked near the bottom of the NFL statistically last season after a poor start but played much better in the second half of the season. It's a similar situation to the one offensive coordinator Rob Chudzinski inherited last January, and the Browns' offense finished among the top 10 in the league last fall.
Tucker will be especially familiar with a young but talented group of defensive backs. Safeties Sean Jones and Brodney Pool came on very strong at the end of '07, their first full season starting together, and rookie cornerbacks Eric Wright and Brandon McDonald showed promise for the future as well.
"I would like to thank Randy Lerner, Phil Savage and Romeo Crennel for the opportunity to be the defensive coordinator for my hometown team," Tucker said. "I'm looking forward to the challenges that lie ahead and I'm confident with hard work we can improve our defense. We have a great group of players on this team and my familiarity with them will be an asset."
Tucker received a two-year extension on his current contract and is under contract with the Browns through the 2010 season.

Another wise move...and I love having young coaches who sincerely love the Browns - getting kids from college and putting them in this kind of environment is great as they are use to playing for team pride - HS -> College -> Browns.
I'm excited and can't wait to see what SAVAGE gives him as weapons to complete the talent circle and what nuances that Tucker will bring to our D...great new beginning but not new as there is no break in the continuity.

well congratz Mel. I think this is a good move mostly because of his familiaritywith the players. Wonder if he is aggressive or not? At least its out of the way and we can move on now.

I agree. Some seem to think we will make more changes in the staff.
I guess that is possible, but if so it is just a normal progression of some guy wanting to move on for professional reasons. If there were others with 'communication' problems, I suspect the moves would have been made at the same time.

One thing for sure, there is certain to be either a new hire or promotion from within, because we need a new DB coach.

We have a OC and DC who grew up browns fans
We're trying to throw the ball downfield and he checked the ball down to Trent Richardson and the Indians on the choice.

DAMN IT...DAMN...DAMN...DAMN...
This better turn out good...An inexperienced DC...DAMN...
And it better start day one cause we know Savage will bring several KEY pieces to this defense this year...
I HATE experimenting with inexperienced 1st time coordinators that were nothing but position coaches...And that includes Chudzinski even tho he did run the O in Miami...Still college...Different game...He's worked...Tucker remains to be seen...
All I gotta say is he BEST listen to Crennel...At least HE'S PROVEN...
Go Browns!!!

Yeah I wanted some experience as well, but I think we took continuity over experience. After Ryan he would have been my next choice. He's done a pretty good job with a bunch of greenies back there. I mean bro Bodden is the "vet" back there, and as you might have noticed he isn't back there enough, because of the injuries. I think for him to get the hire then he must be a RAC guy (considering why TG left), and will be on the same page of what we want to do. Oh and for those whining about the safeties................give them an actual pass rush and see how much better they will look.
I was hoping for Ryan, but besides him I think we got the next best guy for the job.
Against logic, the most effective armor is willful ignorance.

DID, I wanted to get an expierenced DC, too. But, after the turnaround Savage and co. has done with this team, we should just be completely on board with whatever decidions they make, IMO.

Had a first time NFL OC in Chud and he seemed to do well. He had college experience in Miami, but nothing NFL.
If RAC has his hands on the D, Tucker will learn from someone that is very well respected in that area. If that's the case, I'll trust their decision as well.

I'm thinking not so much before hand but at the same time.. and as for bringing in a new DC and have him fire guys,, This isn't really like that.
Tucker has been here as long as any of the other coaches. I'm sure he is more than well aware of the issues and who belongs and who doesn't.
Not that I could possably know this, but I'm sure that when Phil and RAC brought him in to offer up the job, I have little or no doubt that the topic of who's going and who's staying came up.. had to of..
As for you thinking Romeo is weak., come on, give it a rest already..

Yeah, we really didn't see much blitzing from the safties until later in the season, and it started to become successful. If Tucker is the guy who steps in, hopefully RAC's fingerprint will be on the D. We need to create more pressure.
Well, we need to do a bunch of things, but one thing very controllable is how we blitz. Jones did a nice job of creating pressure when given the chance, but those blitzes just weren't called until later in the season.

Mour brought up a good point on another thread I will expound on here.
With RAC being pretty much, if not totally out of the offensive side of the ball....he has indeed spent more time on the defensive side.
And I do think some of the late season improvements were because of RAC(see, I can say something nice about the guy).....but this may have been looked at as a stepping on toes by Grantham...but too bad....he wasn't some great coordinator.....but this may have led to the problems that seem to have surfaced in the last couple of days.
Tucker, being new shouldn't and probably won't mind some extra mentoring by RAC as he gets himself established....he will view it as help while Grantham probably viewed it as meddling...where you are in your career goes a long way in determining how you view it no matter the profession.
RAC does have some skills when it comes to defensive football....and not using his talents seems like a waste to me...the hiring of Tucker should provide a better working relationship which should produce better results.
If everybody had like minds, we would never learn. GM Strong
