Just imagine if next year we draft Jeremiah Smith from Ohio State as our #1 WR. I would take him over any of the QBs in this upcoming draft. Smith #1, Boston #2, KC #3 AKA Slot, and at Fannon TE would be the best receiving corps in the NFL BY FAR. Oh, and btw Q and Samson can catch the ball too. Smith would make our offense so much better than any QB because of that qualitative leap when none of our WRs can be double and triple teamed.

I think Jeremiah is so good I would trade both our number 1 picks this year and maybe even next years number 1 to move up to grab him. I would normally never do that for a WR but I think he is worth it to go from a good WR corps to an elite and possibly best wr corps in all of football. I think with wrs like that any decent QB can do great things. My only fear is that the Titans will take him first to reunite him with Tate. I know if I were the TItans it's what I would do.

My only fear in making this happen is that we need to draft an elite CB and RT. This year we have the picks to make that happen but are there players worth the picks? If we can't move up to get Smith then that is what I would want to do most. CBs are so hard for me to evaluate that I have no clue if there will be an elite one we even have a chance at. Anyone know of some top tier cbs to keep an eye on?

What do my fellow Dawg fans think? What to join my Jeremiah Smith Bandwagon?

I've been thinking this since Week 2. Imagine if we can get him and somehow solve the QB question?!

I've only seen highlights and read the press. He's written about in terms of a true generational talent... Randy Moss type talent.... AJ Green type talent. I think he's likely to be the 1st of the board come April.

He seems more physical than AJ Green to me. He looks more muscular, in line with Moss & Josh Gordon. He is very, very fast and is used to getting mugged on 25% of his receptions.

He's Josh Gordon with a good head. Every single game he does something that will drop your jaw.....double and triple coverage, and you're absolutely right about getting mugged. The damn refs won't call a PI on him for some reason. He hasn't had one called since halfway thru his freshman season. There's also no drama at all with JS. According to all of his coaches and team mates, he's the hardest worker on the team. He's also had 3yrs of NFL caliber coaching. Sad thing is that I don't think we have a chance of landing him it will take a very high pick to bundle. Unfortunately the Rams next 3 games are against the Chargers, Commanders and Cardinals.

If the season continues to play out, there is no way Smith will be available even for a trade up. He will be in Los Angeles after the first pick is turned in.

Right now, the top 5 picks have 4 teams that already have their QB in place.

1 Chargers
2 Titans
4 Commanders
5 Texans

Smith will be snatched and at least 2 of the other spots will be trade ups for QBs

IF it remains the same, which I don't expect it to...

Right now the Browns currently hold #14 and a playoff spot, so lower than 20.

With every Rams win, it is going to become more difficult to move up for the QB we covet...whomever that may be.

I remember when Calvin Johnson came out.

Smith is similar. Not often a receiver is the first pick.

I don't think we have a chance to get him. We are going to be too far down in the draft order. Teams are not going to trade out if he is there when they pick.

The 2027 draft will be complicated for many reasons.

We are just going to have to wait to see when we pick.

I watched the screen pass against Maryland. Should have been a 3 yard gain. It took two more watches to see that none of the three would-be tacklers even laid a finger on him on the way to the endzone.

My son said "that's the best player in college football".

I said, "Jeremiah Smith is the best football player in the world right now."

Who's better?

So since we all agree that he is generational talent is both our first round picks this year and our first from next year worth a trade up to go get him and have the best WR corps in the NFL worth it?

I haven't seen everyone agree with that.

1) There are 20-some teams in the league with the same mentality, so it's too hard to predict the price right now.

2) No, not if I'm GM. We're on a trajectory to have one of the best corps in the league already. You can only throw so many balls per game; how 'bout someone to do the throwin'?

Any top team that has a QB will likely not trade that pick. Any top team that needs one, won't mortgage the chance.

If Smith goes to a team via trade, it will be an absolute King's Ransom. I wouldn't do that, either would Berry.

Plus, "generational talent" gets thrown around every other week. Smith is an absolute beast, but throwing multiple first round picks at a WR is a bit aggressive.

Another absolute beast is true freshman, Jesse Legree (Oregon State). He is absolutely shredding defenses and didn't even start playing WR until his senior year in HS. He was a DB that converted to WR. Fun player to watch.

There are not many WRs you will ever hear me say are generational but come on Smith is easily one of them. He is the best WR in college and I don't think it's even close. Size, speed, techniqal, hands, etc he has it all. I don't see any real weaknesses in his play.

I could even see him going number 1 overall and not even be available to trade up for. I would happily trade 3 first round picks to land him and make our WR corps the best in football. Boston is not a real number 1 WR. He is a very good number 2 with KC being the perfect slot wr. Having Smith would make both of them basically unstoppable.

I feel you guys on not having a great QB on this team to throw to them but having great wrs can make an average QB play at a good level. Sanders especially relies on having WRs who fight for the ball or come back to the ball. I think with smith and boston Sanders could be a good enough QB for us for a long time. I also think Green could easily be a solution at QB with monken teaching him and letting him develop in the background. The Browns obviously think highly of Green since they won't risk putting him on the practice squad.

I do get the argument for not using 3 first round picks though. I just think Smith is the best WR to come along in a long, long time. I personally would happily trade 3 firsts for a WR of his level Since I don't really care for the QBs coming out these days. Like QBs coming out these days are just dumb when it comes to being able to read defenses and it's just not worth the high draft capital anymore IMHO. They are all being molded into athletic 1 read QBs because college teams have to start them or they leave through the portal instead of developing them.

So since QBs are all going to be average at best then I would rather build an elite WR corps to create easy throws to score points. Great WRs create places to throw instead of waiting to be thrown open.

Travis Hunter is the name that last popped up as a "generational player".

Travis is looking amazing at CB. I think we won that trade atm but I would have loved to have him.

Generational talent means much more than being an amazing CB. And I think the term "amazing" in regards to Travis Hunter as a CB is a stretch. After week 7 PFF has him ranked as the 22nd ranked CB.

https://www.pff.com/grades/nfl/cb

Certainly a very good CB. Certainly as asset to any teams secondary. But let's not get carried away.

Yes, but he wasn't a generational CB or WR... He was a generational athlete...

So since QBs are all going to be average at best then I would rather build an elite WR corps to create easy throws to score points. Great WRs create places to throw instead of waiting to be thrown open.

So, I have some fundamental flaws with the plan.

1) I don't think Sanders is a 4500 yard per year QB. It doesn't matter the number of sockets you have in the set if the wrench is broken. Until the Browns build an offensive line capable of 150 yards rushing per game. Teams will find ways to neutralize the receivers without competence at QB. It takes a live arm to utilize guys like Smith, Boston and Concepcion.

2) Green isn't "that" guy. He is built more to make things happen, a poor man's Lamar. If you want the guy who will help get you to the 150 yards rushing per game, you aren't going to need an over load of WRs.

3) If neither 1. or 2. above are your answer at QB, giving up (3) first rounders for one guy that doesn't have the one tool he needs in place to succeed isn't just wasting his career, it's wasting the other two POSITIONS that you might have filled with the extra guys you gave up. I think we can all agree we are going to need help in the very near future at CB, EDGE and O-Line. We can keep filling those holes with 3rd rounders... but then we will continue talking about what are we going to do to upgrade the position.

QBs are not a dime a dozen, it is the most important position on a football team and it isn't close. Spending capital on someone you are convinced could fix the position for the next 15 years is a plan worth executing. Spending (3) firsts in a WR, where there are examples of really good players, and they actually become available in free agency on a regular basis as well, in my humble opinion is not.

Now, if the Rams pick ends up in the top (3) and two QBs go 1-2 and he is sitting there. THEN it depends on that QB we've all been discussing... Is one of the first two taken your guy, or is he still sitting there. If he's there, take him. If he is gone, I would LOVE to have Smith in a Browns uniform in the hopes that you can make magic happen with other picks in either this or the next draft to get an upgrade at QB... not in the 5th round mind you, someone WORTHY of a high draft pick.

Let's do an experiment with arguably one of the 2 best WRs in NFL history, Randy Moss

1998 1313/17
1999 1413/11
2000 1437/15
2001 1233/10
2002 1347/7
2003 1362/17
2004 767/13 injured, still managed to score TDs
2005 1005/8
2006 553/3
2007 1493/23
2008 1008/11
2009 1264/13

Now, the QBs throwing him the ball:
1998 Brad Johnson / Randall Cunningham
1999 Randall Cuninham / Jeff George
2000 Daunte Culpepper
2001 Daunte Culpepper / Todd Bowman
2002 Daunte Culpepper
2003 Daunte Culpepper / Gus Frerotte
2004 Daunte Culpepper
2005 Kerry Collins / Marques Tuiasosopo
2006 Andrew Walter / Aaron Brooks
2007 Tom Brady
2008 Matt Cassell
2009 Tom Brady

YES, he was one of the two best WRs to ever play the game... however, two years in 2006 and 2008, he had Shedeur Sanders type QBs and he looked average...

We NEED a QB, we WANT a generational WR. I am good with a perennial top 8-10 QB, I don't need he next hall of famer to come out of college. Those guys make a Denzel Boston into #1 receivers. Boston has everything needed to be a leader at his position, except a QB.

Anyone that says Boston isn't a Ja'Maar Chase better follow up with, but he doesn't have a Joe Burrow.

Irish, it's funny; over the history of the NFL, it's the team that makes the QB.

Very few drafted a QB and then built around him. Most either drafted a QB they believed fit their team or developed one.

In my opinion, the Browns are in an ideal situation. They'll fall somewhere in the middle of the draft, and some kid who played for an average team will be there. He has all the mental and physical skills, but he had the misfortune of playing for a mediocre team.

I was hoping Mendoza somehow fell to the Browns, but Indiana spoiled it by winning the championship!

Fans haven't figured out that great QBs don't come with all the attributes. It takes a team with the right chemistry and stability to produce their guy. Shedeur could be that guy. Who's to say where his development lands by next year? For you old-timers, how did Brian Sipe become the guy?

More often than not, good teams know how to pick their guy! Yes, the Browns failed on their picks. Then again, have they been experimenting with who qualifies or what criteria are needed?

Well, we've made worse choices with three first rounders.

I agree. I'm not implying to get rid of all the talent because you are looking for a QB. I'm saying all that talent will go to waste if you don't have a QB.

As an old timer(GenX, so don't test me. We aren't as polite as the boomers), I loved the 1980 season watching Brian Sipe. Sipe had a couple of good years out of a ten year career. It was never about Brian Sipe, he took the accolades for players like Mike Pruitt, Greg Pruitt(past his prime), Hall of Famer Ozzie Newsome, Reggie Rucker, Dave Logan. That was a fun offense and an even better defense. They had 22 INTs that year and 10 more fumble recoveries. It made it a little easier for the team to score points. It was one of the most fun seasons I've seen in my life time.

Regardless of all the Super Bowl era Super Stars you can come up with.. Bernie Kosar for example.. NONE have gotten this team to the big game, let alone win it. It's going to take a special team, and I think we have a damn good base right now. We need the guy to lead them there, I can't say Sanders can't be the guy, I'm just saying he hasn't done anything to look like that guy in his career. I don't know why people are putting any eggs in that basket. I wish he was because I like the kid.

I don't want to draft a QB and then start building around him. We've thankfully already started the build, hell we are knee deep in the build. In order to have this team ready for the dome opening, we need to draft a guy now that is worthy of a first round pick. Doesn't have to be worthy of the #1 overall, but a first round grade is what I am talking about.

Randy Moss had several injuries in 2006 and in 2008 Brady was injured and the backup QB was meh. You might want a great QB but are there any to be had? I don't think so. That's the problem. There are only a bunch of so-so QBs to be had and any we draft will take YEARS to develop most likely due to how the college game has changed. Hell Burrows is considered an elite QB but even he doesn't get 4500 yards often. Poor Burrows can't stay healthy. Which just shows it's better to build around avg qbs who are cap friendly and give them great weapons to work with. Would Burrow be so great if he didn't have 2 of the best WRs in the game? Probably not. How good was Joe Montana without Jerry Rice? He became average. It takes a great WR to make a good QB shine.

I love Boston but he is more like a T-Higgens than a Jamar Chase. Boston is that tough WR who will fight for balls but doesn't have elite speed. Boston would explode when they can't put double and triple teams on him. That is the thing about a true #1 WR. They draw the double and triple teams that open the rest of the offense up. Running gets easier because they can't stack the line. TEs become deadly when there is no one left to cover them.

I just want to thank you for your detailed response even if I don't agree with everything. I just love to see good arguments.

1)I don't think Sanders is a 4500 yard per year QB either. Then again neither is Burrows. Could we get a reliable 3500 yards if we draft Smith though? Yes, and very easily so. Sanders has the ability to throw the ball well. He just has to speed up his decision making and at the end of last year he was starting to show that it was possible.

2)I agree that Green is a poor man's Lamar. The thing is, Lamar was not so great either until Monken taught him how to be a better passer. Sadly Lamar doesn't seem to be able to stay healthy. I see Green as more of a Kordell Stewart role myself and think he would be great for that. Sanders as the starter and Green as his back up. I would love to see Green become the holder for the field goal kicker. A fake field goal where he takes off is scary with his speed.

3) Tell me what Elite QB we are going to draft in the next two years when we are making the playoffs? We won't be. Maybe LA's pick turns into gold but I doubt they keep losing once Myles recovers from his surgery as it was only a knee scope to clean up his knee. So in reality we are not drafting a great QB anytime soon. We just aren't. Any good ones if there are any will be taken long before we can pick him up and teams seldom trade down from picking a QB.

QBs are not even a nickel a dozen anymore. All I see in the last several years are a bunch of bleh. None of them seem that exciting to me. Are there any you like that you think are worth passing on the best WR to come out in at least a decade like Smith? I just don't see anyone worth passing him up or believe we would have the draft capital to land said QB. Hell, I am not even sure if Smith doesn't become the number 1 overall pick and becomes impossible for us to trade up and get. I just want Smith because I think he would elevate our offense to an elite level even with Sanders throwing him the ball or God forbid ... Watson throwing him the ball.

LOL! True that!

I think you both make good points. We grew up in an NFL where elite QBs ruled. But look at the NFL now. Very few elite QBs. I don't think any of the elite QBs we have now are nearly as good as the elites of the past especially if you put staying healthy as a requirement. I honestly don't know if Sanders can be THE GUY. I just really like him as a human being and I am rooting for him. I just have this gut feeling he is going to be a Joe Montana type QB who uses charisma and moxy to will the team to win. Give him some great talent and see where he goes. If he doesn't get it done then sign a veteran QB to an obscene contract while we have lots of young talent on offense. We only have about a 3 to 5 year window to figure this thing out before the defense starts to age and we fall into CB hell. That's why I take Smith and have a young elite receiving corps that ANY QB can be great with. Honestly with that WR corps with Smith as our Number 1 WR I genuinely think Sanders will tear the league up.

Shedeur in my mind still has to prove that he can play in the NFL.

There really cannot be speculation. Some thought he was a first round talent. NFL teams did not think so.

He has started seven games. The sample size is too small to determine what he can do.

He has to prove it on the field when he gets his chance. At some point that chance will come. He has been in the NFL and is getting the opportunity to learn. It is up to him to take advantage of that opportunity.

I think the Browns need to be patient with him. Ignore the noise. Develop him.

When he gets his chance. We shall see.

The 2027 draft order is still to be determined. If we get a chance to draft a quarterback who we value at the slot we draft. Draft him.

Let the most talented player rise to be the starter.

Just imagine: If frogs had wings, they could fly.

I doubt the 5 wins we already have is going to put us in to a position to draft the guy, so why imagine? We won't be able to draft him and if Berry trades the farm for the guy, I might shoot myself*.
