(This is a story unrelated to your post but from the parking lot of a fast food joint)...
Also unrelated, but ddubia's story reminded me of a time in Kroger's parking lot with one of my daughters....
She was 4 at the time and sitting in the back of a VW Rabbit we had. My wife only had to quickly pick up a few things so I'm sitting the fire lane directly in front of Krogers. As we are waiting a well endowed young woman walks out. From the back seat I hear her high pitched 4 year voice exclaim, "Oh, look at those "<slang for bobbies that begins with "t">". OMG. All the windows were down in the Rabbit and the woman looks directly at me. I am caught between laughing out of surprise and knowing that I need to admonish my daughter for saying such a thing. I have no idea what prompted her observation or where she even learned the "t" word. I certainly may have used some explicit language on occasion, but that was not part of that vocabulary. She is one of three daughters and she was always the one that could have been a star on Art Linkletter's, "Kids Say The Darndest Things" (now that is old school)
On topic....
Red Barn - yes, great chicken.
Burger Chef - As a kid I always preferred Burger Chef over McDonalds. Don't really know why.
Bill Knapps - We had one in town for years, but I never ate there. I suppose Frisch's would be comparable?
Rax - I do miss Rax. The BBC was one of my all time favorites. Of course one can't go wrong with bacon, the nectar of the Gods.
ddubia also mentioned chili dogs. Funny thing, but it seems that the best one's seem to come out of the strangest places. My fav was from a drive thru with an attached kitchen.
Pizza - Cassano's or Donato's. Cassano's is a pizza chain headquarted in Dayton. I grew up on their pizza and ended up working at a deli venture that they tried. Their pizza had a thin, salty crust with a great sauce. My favorite at this point is from Walmart from all places. It is a "ready for the oven" type and I don't think the Chinese make it.
Muni......I do remember Brown Derby, but never ate there.
If I had to chose a favorite burger joint now, I suppose it would be Steak n Shake. The truth is I don't care for fast food much anymore.
Finally, a couple of regional favorites...
Mumford potato chips. Made in Urbana.....best I've ever had.
Schuler's doughnuts. Located in Springfield and simply the best. Forget about what you think is the best made doughnut if you have never tried them. Let me put it this way, when I meet St. Peter at the Pearly Gates my only request is a Schuler's bismark and a decent cup of joe (black and bitter, please).

Ahhh,, Red Barn.. good place..
Roy Rogers Resturants were good.. kinda like Arbys only better.. I think there may still be a few around but not locally here
A&W Root Beer Stands.. There is still one in Tallmadge.. good food.. My wife loves thier Chili Dogs
In this area there used to be a place called Sharpys 3 S subs.. I don't see them anymore either. They only had like 3 or 4 locations, but Damn, they were good.
Manners Big Boy.. I think they are still here, just not called Manners anymore. Not I think it's Bob's Big Boy
Cookers is gone...
Beef Corral.. Didn't like them anyway
HoJo's or Howard Johnsons
Arthur Treachers Fish and Chips... The last one I knew about was on Northfield road down by Northfield Park.. But that franchise moved near South Point Hospital on Harvard and warrensville...and that's pretty much the only one in Cleveland that I know of.. at one time, there seemed like there was maybe 20 or so here.
Captain Tonys Ribs and Chicken in Beachwood.. that was pretty good.. but I don't think there are any of them left now
The Ground Round - Good place.. I remember they always had Peanut shells on the floor.. Goofy but the food was decent.
Anyone remember Dog n Suds... Heard they used to be good,, never been to one.
I did a quick search and it seems that some of the places I mentioned still have resturants open.. like Ground Round.. still has one left in Iowa City.
It also seems that while some corporations have gone out of business.. some of the franchises remain in business doing things the same as they did before.. They just don't get the benefit of the big chain advertising and purchasing power.
Would you believe, Red Barn still as a store open on East Lake Street in Minnapolis Mn. Or so I'm told.. Can't seem to verify it for sure.

Ahhhh.....lot's to remember.
Brown Derby....had one out by the airport on Brookpark Road. Nice spot.
For ice cream....Franklins...double dip of pistachio for me.
Burgers....Big Steer drive-in in Westlake
Beardens in RR is another.
Stouffers was more than frozen food...they had a couple of great restaurants in town....always went to the one located at Westgate...before it was a mall...now it isn't again.
For a quick snack and something to drink....Lawson's was on about every other corner....Roll on Big O,,,,get that juice up to Lawsons.
If you needed aluminum siding, call Garfield-1 2323, Garfield-1 2323.
For that late night meal after a night on the town....head to the Egg Palace.
Red Barn....Big Barney
I remember taking electric trolly cars from Rocky River to downtown, down Clifton Blvd...bet they wish they had those again.

Of the priginal car hop A&W's there is that one in Tallmadge, and there is one on RT59 right past downtown Ravenna, right before RT14 crosses. I think the one down in Kent on the way to Stow is still open too.

In the Cleveland area there is still one open behind Southland Shopping center, there are also some that are located in malls, good stuff for sure, way better than Long John Silvers.

There's some in the Youngstown area. In fact, there's one about 3 minutes from my house.
Odd thing about the Arthur Treachers here in Austintown. They sell baby back ribs.
The owner also has a restaurant, and I guess they sell ribs from the restaurant down at his Arthur Treachers.

When I lived in Canton, OH there was a Pizza place called Noble Roman's. I loved that place. You could actually go to the window and watch them make the pizza's. I used to just be in awe as the would toss the dough up in the air and catch it. Does anyone remember this?
OMG!!!
I remember that place, I used to do the same thing. Almost completely forgot about it until I read this. They might have been one on 30th in the bowling alley, but there was also one somewhere around Belden Village.
We used to always eat at Parasons (sp?) it was an Italian restaurant on Rt. 62 between Columbus Rd. and Harmont Rd. Used to love to eat there. Pretty sure they got shut down by the health department.

The original Parasons is still open on Darrow Rd over in Hudson or Stow. It is not real cheap like it used to be. They got kind of big for awhile, probably had about 10 locations. They didnt get hut down by the health Dept., but they did get busted re using food that had already been served.
I have told the story here before about what happened when I ate a big spaghetti dinner from Parasons and then went to a party and got trashed drinking grape Mad Dog.

We'd go late night street racing and then stop into the only place open at that hour Royal Castle. Those greasy little onion burgers sure were good with a birch beer. BTW I told my smart alec kids this story and they wanted to know if I sang Greased Lighting. No respect. They take after their mother.

My wife is obsessed w/ a place that used to be here in Columbus called Backyard Burger. I guess it was bought out by Wendy's. When we travel north we always used to go out of our way to the one in Wooster, which is now closed. Now we go to the one in Erie, PA whenever we're up there.
I miss Hardee's so bad. I cannot believe there isn't at least one in Columbus, one of the fattest places in the universe. I miss their burgers and their breakfast food. I get it whenever I'm back home in West Virginia.
I was never a big fan of Rax. Always thought it was a poor substitute for Arby's. There are a few hanging in there down here in Columbus.
All you Roy Rogers fans are cracking me up. Only because the only one I know of is on the West Virginia turnpike at some overpriced travel plaza.

Parrason's has about 4 locations. Stow (Rte 91-Darrow Rd), S. Akron (Arlington and Waterloo), N. Akron (N. Main St - near St. Thomas Hospital) and I think the last one is in Barberton somewhere. I have a takeout menu on my fridge, just in case I'm ever too lazy to make pasta.

My father (RIP) loved taking us to Brown Derby. - I'll never forget the 1986 Browns vs. Chargers game (last game of the regular season) My dad took my mom and I to the game. The Browns beat up on the Chargers and the 3 of us went to the Brown Derby on Northfield road (close to Randall Park Mall) afterwords. - A distinct feature of Brown Derby that I remember was the sports bar that was separate from the restaurant.
I also remember my dad taking my sisters and I to Browns training camp in the summer of 1988, and of course, taking us to that same Brown Derby after.
- My wife and I miss "Hot Dog on a Stick" and "Hot Sam" - Both of these were in Randall Park Mall. - Corndogs, mini-soft pretzels that you could dip in melted cream cheese, or american cheese, and good lemonade.
My mom has family in PA, when I was a kid, our PA family would always take us to the local Rax. That's all they had in their small town, there was no Mcdonalds, no KFC, nothing else, just Rax. - We had never heard of Rax before. We loved their roast beef. - Our family in PA were so proud of the fact that they had Rax in their small town. - Of course, nowadays there is no Rax, but they have a Mcdonalds.
- Also in their small town in PA they had a Murphy's retail store, a Big Wheel retail store, and an Ames retail store. - Murphy's was so much fun, we'd go there and buy records, posters, toys, all sorts of stupid stuff that kids like. Then we'd eat at the diner they had in the store. - Now, all of these venues are closed, as Super Wal Mart has moved in.

You must be in the hub of the Arthur Treachers universe.....I looked it up a day or so ago and found out there are only 45 or so(don't remember the exact number) franchises left.

Their pizzas were bad for some time. I can't necessarily say why other than they just weren't the same. This seemed to coincide at a time when one of the top execs got in trouble for embezzlement. After he was gone they improved greatly. I think the business is completely back in the Cassano family.
....and over indulging on Schuler's doughnuts is a temptation better resisited, but they just seem to have both the dough and icing just right.
