Well it will at least be interesting.

We should be able to see a clear comparison between him and DW.

I would hope he has improved from last year. He has had a good amount of time to prepare and be ready.

He had plenty of reps with the ones in Camp.

The difference I expect to see is Shedeur processing the game faster. Also more pocket discipline.

We had a chance to draft Tyler Shough in the second round instead we took Judkins. We can see how that looks.

I hope Shedeur has a great game and we win.

feels like this is his big shot to take the reins for the rest of the season. If he doesn't look the part, we'll go back to Watson to play out the string

Let's hope he works out and plays well. If he is even above average, the QB position could be cheap, for at least 1.5 seasons.

Wouldn't he have to look way better than "the part" to take QB1's job away during a one-week injury?

I don't. We still need to see the comparison between Shedufus and Gabriel. I root for the Browns, so by default I root for Shedufus.

If everybody had like minds, we would never learn.

That raises the question.

What would he need to do to take over the starter's role.

IMO he would need to be "convincing."

That would be decisive, and accurate. He would have to move the chains. Look comfortable and have command of the offense. Obviously don't turn the ball over.

You want to see the offense in rhythm. Be in control.

Score touchdowns. Sounds simple. It is not so much a stat line of 300 yards. Control and efficiency.

DW main issue is taking sacks. He holds the ball and takes deep drops. He also does not protect the ball when on the move.

You mean instead of starting Dillon? We have no control over a player's concussion unless he's passed protocol and we're like "nah".

I don't think they are planning to trade SS.

They are trying to develop him. They have been doing that since they drafted him.

In the end he was drafted in the 5th round for reasons. He had a lot to clean up. He had bad habits from playing in Colorado.

According to Monken he has worked hard to correct his faults. Most likely he would not get much more in return than where he was drafted.

This is his opportunity to showcase what he has learned.

It should also give some clarity to the Browns going forward.

I don't think there will be any clarity to the situation unless somehow Sanders plays so lights out in this game that he steals the #1 QB position away from DW. And with the team being 5-3 under DW that's a pretty tall order. One game can be a sign or an anomaly. That's why future of the QB position for the Browns can not be decided by one or two games.

It is quite unlikely that DW's concussion is so severe he misses multiple games which would actually give Sanders an opportunity to showcase what he can or can not do. But it is an outside possibility.

Is he starting by coach's selection or by default? I just attributed the Monken commentary as more of the same interview commentary any HC would offer as verbal support for a starting QB who needs propped up. I am pulling for the Browns. I do not personally need more "clarity" for SS. Ue is an also-ran who did not show enough progress. I expect clearly to see issues: footwork, one-reading single progression, hold the ball too long, get sacked, throw late. The same list can go on. The "SS to be starter" fanboys have the break they want in week 9. We have seen some flashes from SS, who has managed much less than DW. Barring concussion protocol, injury, he would not start this Sunday. We are looking backward at other "showcase opportunities" SS has had. If he will be a QB starter, that day is not now IMO, and his play shows it. I want a win, but our OL and the SS issues will keep this close.

Get Gabriel ready. Go, Browns!

I agree and really hope SS plays well enough to win one game

DW has the team at 5-3 and sitting in a position that has many pleasantly surprised

The 3 losses were team losses, they weren't losses by QB play

I would like to see a win against the Saints to take the Browns to 6-3

Then see DW start against the Texans and get a home game win to take the Browns to the bye week with a 7-3 record

My fear is that SS may start the next two games and put up better numbers than DW, but also have a 1-1 record going into the bye

That I believe could start another QB controversy that the Browns do not need at this time.

If the Browns were 1-7 under DW then maybe a QB change during the bye week would be necessary

They are not and it feels really good that there is no QB change talk being discussed

Sanders is still scheduled to start Sunday, but in an update on the situation moving forward.............

Deshaun Watson clears concussion protocol, remains questionable for Sunday

Browns quarterback Deshaun Watson won’t be starting Sunday’s game against the Saints, but he could be active as Shedeur Sanders’s backup.

The Browns announced on Saturday that Watson, who returned to practice Friday, has cleared concussion protocol. He is still listed as questionable to be available on Sunday, however.

Browns head coach Todd Monken announced Sanders will start on Friday, but declined to say whether Watson will be active as the No. 2. Dillon Gabriel and Taylen Green are both on the 53-man roster and could serve in that role.

The Browns also announced that they have signed defensive lineman Sam Kamara to the active roster and that they have elevated tight end Carsen Ryan from the practice squad for the game in New Orleans.

The Saints' defense is 28th in yards per game and 25th in points allowed.

This should be a good chance to see if Shedeur has learned anything and looks any more like an actual NFL QB.

Last season was not an ideal way to break into the NFL with the Browns at quarterback.

Flacco, Pickett, Gabriel, and Sanders started Camp. The OL was trash. Not even close to average.

Shedeur was not only not expected to start. Making the roster was no guarantee. There were not enough reps at practice to even be noticed.

The situation changed as the season approached. Then with seven games remaining and the bench empty SS was thrown on the field.

Today is a completely different story. Shedeur has had plenty of time to prepare. A full off season to look at the seven games he played. Time to work on improvements.
Then coming to OTA's with a chance to win the starting job. He had all of Camp to share reps with the first team.

Now after eight games of watching the offense. Being in on all the calls during the game. Going through eight weeks of pre game preparation and then watching the offense in games. He now gets a chance to start a game.

There is no excuse about not being prepared. The team is healthy. Weather will not be a factor. We are playing a team ranked near the bottom in defense.

He doesn't have to be a hero. There is talent around him. Get the ball out to your playmakers and don't turn it over.

I expect him to play good enough to win.

I agree. It's on the line for Shedeur today. No excuses. Being a loyal, avid fan I root for every Browns player. That said, I like Shedeur and really want him to do well. He seems like a good kid. Best of luck to him and the team. We need a win today to get back on track especially after last week's debacle.

Honestly I don't understand the hostility towards Shedeur.

Nor, do I get the over the top praise about him either.

He plays for the Browns and I hope he plays great.

At the same time I have zero expectations. I have no idea how he will play. He has earned the opportunity and he is getting it.

H

Just may opinion from reading posts and from the FB loonies who both love and hate SS.

The negative opinions started on draft night when his "team" created the elaborate Vegas type legendary TV set for ESPN live coverage. When he didn't go high in the draft, guys like Mel Kiper & Skip going ballistic about how the NFL treated him. Plus, his dad going on NFL pregame shows stating there were teams that Prime's people told not to draft him. I also think SS's success at Colorado was as much attributable to Hunter, not him. His supporters blaming every college mistake on his bad O-line. They also commented on his propensity to fade back at the slightest pressure, hold the ball and take sacks. Also, the news coverage of a 5th back up was unprecedented. It also didn't help when his number was retired, along with Hunter at CU so quickly.

Regarding the love, I think most of it has to do with being fans of his dad and loving the glamour. If SS's last name was Smith, I don't believe he would have received a 1/4 of the coverage/attention. The Colorado program also was quickly improved by coach Prime and SS, right or wrong, was given a lot of the credit. There is a lot of praise for his Christianity, at least online. Not as much as Tebow, but it is there. It was also easy to blame his initial lack of success on the Browns because of the team's struggles at the position for decades, so defending his less than average play was easy in their eyes. Claims that KS was out to get him, and in some small circles the entire NFL front offices being against him because he is Prime's kid. I also think there is so much hatred of DW, SS is the most obviou sreplacement.

These are all points I have read multiple, sometime dozens of times online. Not my opinions, just pointing out what exists out there.

Today we start to find out which camp is right, but it's inly the beginning.

DW has cleared concussion protocol so he could start today. IMO someone in the organization wants to see what progress Shedeur has made and what he can do for us. They figure it's time. Again, JMO

And they rank 29th in run defense. They should be able to run all over them the same way they did the Titans. I could be they won't need to rely much on Sanders arm in the game plan unless they get behind.

• Rushing Yards Allowed per Game: ~139.4 yards per game

• Rushing Touchdowns Allowed: 11 rushing touchdowns

• Yards Per Carry Allowed: 4.8 yards per carry

• Total Defense Ranking: 28th overall in the league (372.7 yards allowed per game)

He didn't clear protocol until Thursday afternoon. Practices for the week were virtually over, the game plan had been implemented and the starter already named.
