I thought it would be a good idea to start a thread for some draft prospects. Please add some sort of scouting report (either by you or an article) and try to keep it relevant to the Browns. To keep the thread from getting cluttered, it may be best to post a link to the article rather than posting it in the thread. We don't need to be discussing players that the Browns have no shot at drafting. Key free agents may also be added, but please specify that they are a Free Agent if they are an unfamiliar player.

Frank Okam - DT - Texas

6'5" 320 lbs. SR.

Big body who could probably play either DE or NT (if he bulked up some probably). I haven't seen too much of him this past year, but he is definitely a solid player who may be available in the 2nd Round. Not only is he a good player, but he seems like a good person as well with no character problems. Didn't put up huge stats (only 26 total tackles) but could be perfect to plug up the center of the line.

Red Bryant - DT - Texas A&M

6'5" 322 lbs. Sr.

Like Okam, he is a big body who could potentially play either DE or NT. In 2007, he had 46 total tackles (3TFL), 1 sack and a FF. Has great size and could become a good run stuffer to plug up the line and allow the LBs to make plays.

Frank Morton - DT - Tulane

6'2" 331 lbs. Sr.

Don't know too much about him, but his size is intruiging. His weight is good for a NT, but his height is not great. However, his height may be an advantage in getting leverage as he is shorter and may be able to get lower and gain control on the O-Lineman.

Jason Shirley - DT - Fresno State

6'5" 330 lbs. Sr.

Was suspended from the team after being arrested for suspicion of DUI so there are potential character issues. Has the body to be a NT, but does he have the work ethic and character to be one?

Isn't 6'-5" a tad taller than you'd like your NT to be? I think your NT should ideally be in the 6'-1" to 6'-2" range. The NT needs to keep his pad level under the opposing OL's pad level so he can drive with leverage and command a double team. That would be tougher for a 6'-5"+ guy to do (particularly against centers who are typically shorter and who, by the nature of their position, start each play with their pad levels low).

This a guy I hope drops to the Browns..

Dre Moore - Scouting ReportScouting Report
Dre Moore
#92 Team: College
Scout: Luke Paul Chandler
Date: January 4, 2008
Eval Position(s): Birthdate: 06/09/1985
DT - Defensive Tackle
School: Maryland

Height Weight
6'4 311
Best Fit Position/Role: End in 3-4, tackle in 4-3

Ideal Schema/Role: 3-4 defensive end

General Traits
Character / Leadership Ability: Is a veteran on the Terrapins defense, but has only been a starter for a season and a half. Is not a vocal leader.
Competitive Nature / Work Ethic: Is a willing competitor, but will wear down late in games. He gets tired late in games, but he logs a high number of snaps.

Football Intelligence: Good awareness and play recognition. Can diagnose plays well and rarely is out of position.

Size: Is well-built and thick. Has a good deal of muscle on his frame and is very sturdy. Has long arms and a thick base.

Athletic Ability: Is a good athlete for his size. Light on his feet, and does not play like a two-gap lineman.

Toughness / Durability: Moore is a gamer and rarely takes plays off. Consequently though, his durability and impact late in games is lacking.

Specific Traits - Defensive Tackle
Quickness: Moore great quickness off the snap. Is able to stay low and fire off quickly. Is also athletic enough to be used in zone drops.

Strength: A powerful defender with great low body strength. His thick legs allow him to get position and anchor well.

Instincts / Recognition: While Moore can properly diagnose where a play will develop, he often misreads his keys to get to the ball quicker. Because Moore only started playing football as a junior in high school, he should continue to grow in this area.

Pass Rush: Is lacking in this area. He can get upfield, but lacks pass rush moves. When he does get to the quarterback, it’s because he overpowered his opponent. Likely just a two-down defender in the NFL.

Pursuit: Moves very well down the line and pursues plays, even when he’s on the backside of a play. Sheds blockers easily.

Run Defending: A stout run defender at the point of attack. He will shed blocks and get after the ball carrier. Plays the inside run well, and dominates at the point of attack. Teams rarely ran at Moore by season’s end.

Tackling: Good wrap up tackler. Hits at a good level, and overpowers defenders, rather than dragging them down.

Technique / Leverage: Gets very good leverage in the early going of games, especially on running plays. He gets under his blockers pad level. Has a good technique and hand use also. As the game progresses though, his technique fades because of his conditioning.

Additional Comments: Moore has a ton of upside and will be attractive to NFL teams who run a 3-4 defense. His skill translates well to playing end in that system, and he is a rising prospect. He often played the nose or three-technique in four-man fronts; and both end spots in a three-man line. His combination of two-gap skills and one-gap quickness will make him an attractive player. His conditioning could be a concern, but in the NFL he won’t be asked to log as many snaps as he did at Maryland.

Injury Concerns: No real injury concerns, but Moore missed a game in 2005 because of a sprained ankle.

Could Be As Good As: Ty Warren, DE, New England Patriots
Worst Case: Randy Starks, DT, Tennessee Titans
Where He'll Probably Go: Late 1st or Early 2nd
Where He Should Go: Late to Mid 1st

I am a fan of Frank Morton of Tulane. He has that thick wide base and one of the strongest players in this years draft. Tremendous power in his legs He really plays the run well and doesnt get out of position. He will probably come off the board in day 2 but he has a lot of upside. Very similar to Shaun Smith.

BTW we need a draft a draft forum.

I like Dre Moore. I hope he's there if we stick with out spot in the 2nd round. Hell, I hope he's available so we can trade up to get him in the 40-45th pick range.

I'm gonna throw another name into the DT ring, along with Okam, Moore, Bryant, and Morton.

Ahtyba Rubin.

I still don't know how to say his first name. No official scouting reports yet, but the rabid draftnick fans that don't get paid have had this to say about him:

Quote:

1- he's got a great NT body; he's built low to the ground, is top heavy and looks like he's got short legs....he enhances that with his playing style by keeping his pads low to the ground and getting leverage on opponents...

2- he's got outstanding 1st step quickness and tremendous leg drive....against Iowa he was doubled and even triple teamed yet he held the point and gave up no ground (vs. Robertson who gets blown off the ball)...the few times teams were dumb enough to put a single blocker on him he bullrushed the opponent off the ball...he's a pocket pusher, not a penetrator...

3- he goes 100mph and gives great effort to make plays...

he's not much of a pass rusher, is a bit straight linish and must learn to use his hands (once he's gets blocked he stays blocked; but that is very coachable)

I think it's safe to say we'll be getting one of these guys mentioned. We'll probably need to move up to do so, but I can see it happening. From what I've read, the staff is comfortable with Shaun Smith the primary guy in the NT rotation, so If we find a solid 3-4 DE in free agency to play opposite Robaire, we could wait back on more of a project NT and wouldn't necessarily need to get into the first round or in the beginning of the second round to get someone.

If Phil does his thing is FA we should see one new DT/DE and one ILB..
I would then expect him to double back on those spots and take a DE to develop and a OLB Tweener..

I would then expect him to address the TE spot in the draft..some good prospects...we need one who has skills similar to KW..
Our OC is a TE guru...
RB might also be addressed there also.
It may be the typical draft most think it should be..

I agree that an ideal NT would be a shorter D-Lineman, but it wouldn't be impossible for a 6'5" D-Lineman to play NT.

Let's take a look at the NT position around the NFL (all player info taken from nfl.co ) :

Name Team HT WGT

Jason Ferguson Cowboys 6'3" 312
Kelly Gregg Ravens 6'0" 310
Casey Hampton Steelers 6'1" 325
Ethan Kelley Browns 6'2" 338 (He has ideal size, but unfortuneately has struggled)
Dewayne Robertson Jets 6'1" 310
Ted Washington Browns 6'5" 375 ( I threw him in because he used to be one of the best NT in the NFL)
Vince Wilfork Patriots 6'2" 325
Jamal Williams Chargers 6'3" 348

I may have missed some, but I think I got all that are worth mentioning. Ideally IMO, a NT should be 6'3" or shorter and weigh around 325 or more. However, I don't think a player being 6'5" would make a huge difference, he just wouldn't be the ideal. Most of the NT fit the ideal height or weight or both, but I threw Ted Washington in as an example. He was great in NE while he was there (granted he weighed so much) but he's 6'5".

With JJ possibly retiring next year and without a WR to replace him with at the moment, I like James Hardy out of Indiana. He has played well at Indiana and I LOVE his size. I'd hate to draft another WR, but he could develop into a great possession WR.

James Hardy - WR - Indiana
