It means the banks and post office are closed.....my darn city garbage won't run on the usual Monday either. Now I have to cram a extra bag in the can and wait for the alternate day....Wednesday.

I forget to mention, it also means a street that usually runs through a run down part of town.

Kind of a funny story...my mom is a Kindergarten teacher (inner-city Toledo City School district) and she had a parent come in and as why schools were closed for milk day. It took a while to figure out, but she finally realized the woman meant MLK day. She politely told her it wasn't milk day, but rather Martin Luther King Day.

I'll bet a whole lot more started making sense to that woman after that - no longer was it the milk bridge, but the Martin Luther King bridge; not milk avenue, but Martin Luther King avenue...lol...

I drive down that street 6 times a week. Of all the streets across America called MLK Cleveland has the prettiest. St Louis might have the worst.

I stay as far away from MLK drive in Milwaukee as I can. It's ironic that a man who stood for piece has his name on the street in one of the least peaceful parts of this town.

Not just to you peen, but to everyone who finds this day no more than a day-off or an inconvience, listen to King's speeches.

Don't listen to the "black man". Don't listen to the "preacher". Listen to the words.

The man said a lot more than, "I have a dream." But that's about all many know of him.

When I think of MLK I think of these things and a very brave and intelligent man. I also think of all the other's that he represents, all those who fought and are still fighting to make his dream a reality.

I also love that in Cleveland the museums, many of which are usually closed on Mondays, are open with free addmission in his honor. It seems like a very fitting tribute to him and one that he'd appreciate. I've enjoyed many of the progrmas offered. They entertain, educate and inspire.

I haven't been to any of the other MLK Blvd, streets etc around the country but I agree that the drive in Cleveland is beautiful(in every season).

Or maybe it should be "What does MLK DAY mean to you?"

To me it means an extended weekend, with a paid day off.

To those that think it means equality or peace, we will never have racial equality at the rate this country is going.....there is a bias on the part of too many white folks, and there is a lack of desire in too many of the black folks-as well as wanting to live a gangsta thug lifestyle.

Just ask Bill Cosby.

Hmmmm........to me........Martin Luther King Day makes me think that our country is still divided by racial lines. While some progress has been made, most of that progress is token---i.e. Martin Luther King Day.

Ignorance + Fear = Hate. [yes, on both sides]

It's true on MLK Day.... and every other day of the year.

That same bias runs on both sides of the street. I've spoken with a number of white guys who do have the bias against black individuals, but I've also spoken to black guys who refuse to let me accept them as a man instead, they make it a very big point that they are a "Black Man."

I grew up on the near west side of Cleveland and went to school on the east side (116th and MLK to be exact). My school had a 95% or greater black population, I don't really see a person through their color. I listen to them when they speak and how they act and treat them accordingly. Unfortunately, There are too many who don't, and too many who won't let you forget that they are a "Black" man.

So my friends were going to have a party Sunday night and they just cancelled cuz they got protest threats from the OU chapter of the NAACP...no joke.

The invite was titled "hooray for MLK!" but there wasn't an actual theme. I'm sorry but I think that's a wee bit over the top.

Because neither they, nor their parents, or their grandparents, or their grandparents have ever been to Africa.

That's why.

We've discussed this PC BS before. You ARE NOT from Africa. You are an American citizen, so get rid of the attitude you're preparing to get when you read this post because we have been down this road before.

I actually just graduated from, only took 8 years from high school, but work at OSU.

and yes I was getting blazed

but Shep brings up a good point I have been meaning to read Bill Cosby's book. I hear it is a good read. There are issues that still need to be addressed in America when it comes to race. See statistics of African Americans and prison populations, very disturbing.

IMO it is the 800lb elephant in the room no one talks about.

That being said, there is a very good reason we all have off on Monday. IMO MLK is one of the most important figures in American history.

Sure there's still a lot of inequality but you asked what we think of when we think of MLK not what we think of the state of our society.

As for that 800 pound elephant, oh yeah there are a ton of people who just won't admit it's there even when some of us try to talk about it.

If you haven't read "Let the Trumpet Sound" by Stephen B Oates. It's an excellent biograghy of Dr King.

DawgyLama- Yes, there is a lot of inequity still in our society. As we move forward the economic difficulties we face as a nation will necessitate people to be less concerned with skin color and ancestral heritage and more concerned with economic viability as individuals independent of their grouping preference.

With less new programs targeted at one group based on race, color or point of origin we should see a lowering of emotions directed towards the beneficiaries of the previous gov't programs. Whether this is right or wrong...when a nation is broke we deal with daily common survival as opposed to who eats brand name soup versus who eats generic brand.

The American people will never knowingly adopt Socialism. But under the name of 'liberalism' they will adopt every fragment of the Socialist program, .

MLK to me evokes the memory of a peace-loving brave man, a preacher and a leader. I'm grateful for the changes he helped bring about in this country and I appreciate the holiday in his honor. In Cleveland, there are many events going on this weekend that are intended to help us remember him and remind us of his message.

I'm glad to have the day off because those events are well attended and driving in University Circle sucks even more than usual on MLK Day.

Quick story....My kintergardener came to me yesterday and asked me who "Arthur Luther King" was....I laughed and said Do you mean Martin Luther King?....Anyway, even in kintergarden he was learning all about him this past week....I was actually very impressed....He told me that he had a dream....he told me about how all people should be equal and that God created a "whole bunch of different people", the real issue he was mad about was why someone would have shot him...It was a good opportunity to re-enforce to my son that you dont judge any person by the color of their skin....just reminded me of how racism is taught and learned....thank god my parents taught me that there are good people and bad people of every race, judge by how people act and not by skin color....sounds simple but it works...

I agree. But the flaw in that logic comes when most of any given group acts in a given way.
