Slavery might be gone, but that doesn't mean racism is...

As far as this thread topic, why didn't Johnny Grier ever ref a SB? I always thought he was pretty good.

Why do you say that, navy?

Frankly I don't care much what color the ref's skin is, or what gender the ref is, or anything else for that matter - as long as he/she is the best ref out there. And without question I think that Mike Carey is the best ref the NFL has.

It is NOT a silly question...the fact of the matter is that this dude is BLACK...and there have NOT been any BLACK refs in the super bowl ever...this is why it's news...do i personally think it should be considered news?

The fact of the matter is the guy is going to be a Ref in his first super bowl, adding the BLACK comment just promotes racism.

Black people care. When you have relatives that were once owned by white people in this country, you make note of every new achievement I guess.

It's been quite awhile since slavery. I'd say, its time to move on.

New achievements? First black person to cure cancer, AIDS, diabetes, that would be an achievement, refereeing a football game, not so much.

I think a lot of people just won't come out and say that they just don't like blacks.

Didn't Paul Brown say "When you win say nothing"? Like GM said, tooting your horn about another black breaking free of whiteys oppression just perpetuates the problem. That's what we don't like.

Are you not surprised at all that there has never been a Black Ref in the super bowl?

As I understand the article.. from this part...

Quote:

Blacks also have been well-represented in the Super Bowl at other positions, starting with Burl Toler, a former player, who was involved of several of the early games.

Somebody can correct me if I'm wrong, but he isn't the first black to officiate in the super bowl, he's just the first black crew chief in the super bowl.

This is from a bio on Burl Toler...

Quote:

Toler majored in education while playing as a linebacker with the University of San Francisco Dons. In 1951, Toler and his team were undefeated with a perfect 9-0 season. Toler was drafted in 1952 by the Cleveland Browns. He injured his knee during an all-star game that ended his opportunity to play professional football. Shortly thereafter, he became a teacher at the Ben Franklin Middle School in San Francisco. He also began officiating college games in the San Francisco area. Toler became the first African American football official for the National Football League in 1965, later officiating three NFL Super Bowl games.

I would also like to add at this point that it is not Carey that is making this a story, it is not any other black that is making this a story... it is from the nfl website... they are the ones who feel compelled to pat their own enlightened backs by making this a story...

He is the first black ref.....I don't know if the ref is always the crew chief or not.

Remember, ref is a position on the crew....the guy who does all the talking and gives all the signals.

"LOL it's amazing how you old folks are so open minded
And they say America is ignorant heh... "

"But you have no idea what you sound like when you say that to a person who actually does care...and there are people out there that do...

Telling them how THEY should feel about something that only they can understand is pretty ignorant my friend....i'm sick of all the people on the board that say "i'm color blind, i don't see the persons skin color"

BrownBuck.... I agree with the importance of the naming of the first black S.B.referee....but only because he EARNED it. There are many people who are tired of racial distinctions being drawn and then what seems[only an observation here] to be an extra effort to reward persons of color occassionally.

To refer to another's lack of recognition of this as being a big deal as ignorance is a bit small minded.

OhYeah!!!! BrownBuck!!!!! I am highly OFFENDED by your OLD FOLKS crack

I understand that... I just get the feeling from reading some of the posts that some people are taking the article to mean he is the first black to ever wear the pinstripes for the superbowl.. and that's not true. Just wanted to make sure everybody was working with the right information.

I agree with him. This country is not prepared for a minority President, and I made the statement a long time ago that Obama would be shot if he were to be elected.

There are enough crazies out there that this is by no means far fetched.....and saying that it is a possibility does not mean someone has "issues."

*LOL*

They are called "opinions" not issues. Just because you disagree means you have a differing opinion.

It's really not that hard to grasp that simple concept, you should have realized that by now.

If by issues, you mean that I do not have blinders on and see the high potential of a minority president being assassinated, you're right. IMO to believe otherwise is pretty naive.

I do appreciate you're attempted insult however.

The simple fact that every thread dealing with race goes on for pages and often becomes quite contentious, makes it apparent that for better or worse, this country still has "race issues".....

But yet, we're supposed to believe that everything is fair and equal?!?!

You complain about the NFL being proud of having it's first black crew chief in a superbowl, and then turn around and say the country is not ready for a minority president...ridiculous!

j/c Vers ....

he is the first REFEREE of a SB game ... there have been other BLACK OFFICIALS in the SB just not at the REFEREE position ...

1. Congrats to Mr. Carey .. he is a GREAT REF and this has been a long time coming .. he DESERVES IT .....

CONGRATS AGAIN TO A GREAT, WELL DESERVING REF ...

2. Peenie .. the Referee is always the crew chief .. ALWAYS ..... it is the lead position ... U start off working other positions and elevate to the Refs position ... they are ALWAYS IN CHARGE out there ..

3. The NFL is promoting it because alot of people (Jackson, Sharpton and many other "black rights" org's) are still making noise about blacks in coaching and reffing in ALL SPORTS ... so of course the NFL is going to SHOUT IT FROM THE ROOF TOPS ...

just because the people on this board don't know it doesn't mean it still isn't a major issue in some circles ....

I could care less about it .. but If I was an NFL PR or in mgmt. I would be doing the same damm thing ...

4. Slavery is one of the many subjects are country is VERY VERY IGNORANT about in general ... and this board seems to be no exception ...

5. Black officials are being pushed up the ladder even if they are not as good as some of their white counterparts in ALL SPORTS .... WOMEN are also given preferential treatment in hoops and baseball ...

A perfect example of that is the black Ref in the Jax/NE playof game .... hes HORRIBLE and is only a Ref in he NFL because of his skin color ... he should not be a Ref much less doing a playoff game ... he worked one of our games .. i am sure U all remember that one as u RIPPED HIM A NEW ONE after the game ... and it was about the only time this year U were right in your weekly criticism of the Officials ...

and just so U know .. Mr. Carey does not fall into that group .. he is a GREAT REF and is DESERVING OF EVERYTHING HE GETS ...

CONGRATS TO HIM ....

As a black person...it's not that big a deal, but it's interesting, and I'm happy for Mr. Carey. How slavery and all that got into this discussion...and assisinating the first black president...all that shows is that these people who claim to be so color blind...really aren't color blind at all...truth of the matter, nobody is...everybody sees race...besides gender, it's the first thing you see about a person, and whether you choose to admit it or not, it impacts how you deal with that person, positive or negative

Sorry, have to correct you...racism is bad...racial predjudice in and of itself is harmless...racism is ACTING upon that racial predjudice. The predjudice is just a preconceived notion based on race.

The only people bent out of shape over this are those who scream "Political Correctness" every time something like this takes place.

It's not a monumental occasion, but it is noteworthy. As someone else said, it's just the NFL doin' a little PR.

Yes this country does have race issues, that is no secret.

The media making a big deal of it doesn't help, and that goes both ways. Celebrating a black achievement, or admonishing a black crime. Why can't it just be a persons achievement or a persons crime, why does color even have to be mention or worse, headlined?
