Not to change the topic of the thread, but one of my buddies told me that on Tony Rizzo's show, they were talking about CC Sabathia showing up at some sporting event wearing a YANKEES hat. If true, it's one thing to play one sport and be a fan of a team from another city in a different sport, but for goshsakes CC, DON'T wear the hat of a rival in the SAME sport!!!

What if Edwards wore a detroit pistons hat. Especially if it was in the eastern conference finals against the cavs.

this whole thread is laughable...

a complete disgrace to the city? that's insane... lebron has done more for the city than any of us could have imagined the day the cavs won the lottery...

who cares who he roots for? what does it matter?

i just love all these people that are saying "oh, i'll never watch the cavs again", seriously. we'll see each and every one of you come playoff time.

and peen, doesn't new york need actual basketball teams before he can "work his way to new york"

I defended LeBron when he wore the Yankees hat.. and of course he's free to like whatever teams he wants outside of basketball and I really don't care... but he does seem to get a bit of a kick out of rubbing it into Cleveland's fans faces just a bit.

plus, i think people are forgetting some of the words that lebron said a few years ago, when the whole yankee thing was brought up (yeah, people actually think this is new stuff, lebron has talked about being a yankee fan since he was drafted)

he wants the cavs to be like the yankees, that kind of success... he wants everyone to hate them, because they win, like the old bulls, the patriots now...

Yep it was at a NBA game; I believe he was at Golden State Warriors game in 2005. I brought this up before and I don't think the Tribe fans believed me or wanted to, well I finally found the image.

Exactly.

I wouldn't have a problem with it if he was from any other city. But HE IS FROM AKRON, WHICH IS ESSENTIALLY LIKE BEING FROM CLEVELAND! He should know doing this to us is exactly what you DON'T do!

If Braylon wears a Pistons hat, I don't care. He's from Michigan, ditto w/ the Tigers. But LeBron? A HOME GROWN product? That bugs me.

Write this down right now, if Brady Quinn is anything that he's meant to be, he WILL be the new face of Cleveland sports and LeBron will be a distant second.

Let me guess, now some of you think CC won't resign . Or, will you rip him like you do LB?

Maybe LBJ already sees that writing on the wall,...I agree with 'Peen -- he is setting himself up for the Big Move.

Aside from being a lifelong Yankee fan, he also has proclaimed that he wants to employ his status as a rich sports superstar to become a multi-millionaire as a businessman. This venture is just a small step toward that goal. What better a place to do that than to continue befriending the people of New York, the mecca of all marketing.

This wouldn't even be a problem if he were in some other NBA city, would it ??

You really are clueless. LBJ has not even hit his prime yet. Basketball is a superstar sport. Always has been, always will be. What I mean by that is Tom Brady is not the man without that offensive line, Randy Moss etc.

In basketball, you have a guy like LBJ who can do it all and literally carry a team to victory by himself.

By the nature of the game he plays and where he has ALREADY positioned himself globally, LBJ will be the face of CLEVELAND until he retires/leaves.

If Quinn lives up to the hype around him he should become a bigger star in cleveland. Doesnt mean he will. Who do you think cleveland fans care more about the cavs or browns? Unfotunately basketball is a world wide thing and with exposure can turn you into a global phenom.

But who will Cleveland want as its face?

IMO it'd be the face of the Browns. No question in my mind because Cleveland is Browns Town first and foremost.

Well, there was quite a story like this when someone snapped a picture of Mr. Tom Brady in a Yanks cap last year. A lot of fans from the New England area were appalled even though their Golden Boy had given them 3 Super Bowls (and a 4th one on the way). You would think that would give him a free pass to do anything....but even they got on his case.

So, some fans care and some don't. I'm in the group that doesn't care. Heck, I've said that if Lebron gets us one title, he can leave for NY the next day and I wouldn't mind. Shoot, I'd buy his plane ticket. I only want one...

brady quinn will never be as big as lebron in cleveland as long as lebron is there...

chicago is a football town, they love the bears, but michael jordan was by far the biggest star they had, bigger than payton, bigger than anyone they had...

it's a superstar-driven sport, and right now cleveland has the biggest and most marketable star this game has seen since mj...

sorry folks. that's just the nature of the way things work. hate the yankee cap now, love the larry o'brien trophy that he hoists for cleveland in the future...

and for those that think he's setting himself up for a leave, has this crossed your mind? that maybe he's reaping the benefits of playing in new york, without actually playing there? selling shoes, having commercials... he's already proven to the fans and the city that he isn't about market size, if he was he never would have signed the extension. end of story. dead issue.

I'm with you,...I really don't care. But, as a fellow northeast Ohioan, I would be VERY surprised to hear/learn that LeBron is NOT a Browns fan -- but I wouldn't desecrate him thereso because.

Brady wearing a Yankees cap,....?? I would GUESS that, because maybe he is from Texas, perhaps Clemens is one of his boyhood idols,...but I'm not even sure Brady is from Texas,....

Two years ago -- this is always a fun converstaion -- I would have said the Cavs are closer to getting that "One" championship for Cleveland, than the Tribe is or the Browns are. Right now, the Cavs are back to running third in that race,.....

Lebron,

Don't even waste your time arguing about this. Most of the board does not follow the NBA.

Your post hit everything right on the head by the way.

LBJ is the best and most recognized player in his league already and has not hit even hit his prime. Brady Quinn has not even started an NFL game yet. Ridiculous....

no, absolutely not, but that's not what i'm trying to say...

imagine this, tom brady, 3 super bowls, could possibly go to 4 in a week and some days... but if you stuck lebron in boston, he'd be bigger than brady, even without the ring, it's just the way the world of sports works...

yeah, like i said, it doesn't matter what kind of town it is, basketball players, especially the ones as big as lebron, will always top everything else...

it's a sport where one guy can make a difference, where players don't wear helmets, so fans are used to seeing the faces of the players (sounds dumb, but it's very true, talk to anyone who deals with marketing/sports, hockey has died off partly for that reason, guys didn't wear helmets and the casual fan could get familiar with a hockey players face, now it's a rule)

They were a half game ahead of us at the start of the night. I know we'd have a better record if Lebron didn't miss a few games, but they've been without Gilbert Arenas most of the season...

Umm, says who? That's the way the world of sports works? Are you serious?

I don't mean any ill will by that, but your statement and comparison are absurd.

LeBron would not be bigger than Brady unless he surpassed what Brady has done in terms of championships.

Again, another perspective stated as fact.

I see what you are trying to say, but I think you are pushing it too hard because you really like LeBron. Which is another problem with your view...it's biased. You're obviously a big basketball fan, and a big LeBron fan. I think you need to take a step back and rethink your stance.

And you can't make the comparison to MJ. MJ was/is iconic. He reached a level that maybe only 5 guys have ever reached. LeBron hasn't even scratched the surface of that yet. He might get there someday, he might not.

Football rules this country. And football rules Cleveland.

More people might know who LeBron is, but if Quinn turns out to be a top 5 qb in this league, they may be sharing center stage for that 'face of the city' and Quinn might be standing a little taller.

If Quinn wins a championship before LeBron, I think you can most certainly bank on it.

it has nothing to do with me liking lebron, it's the way things work...

and yes, lebron is no jordan, but jordan paved the way for lebron and dwyane wade, and kobe bryant...

basketball players get paid more, the get most of the advertising, especially on the national stage...

and the thing is, if quinn is the qb of a super bowl team, it will be a browns championship...

if lebron wins with the cavs, it's a lebron championship...

it isn't perspective, it's the way it is.

doesn't matter how die hard a football town cleveland is, basketball players will always be bigger...

there are exceptions, peyton manning is the obvious one...

LT is a top 5 player in the league, and he pales into comparison of what lebron, wade, and some of the other top tier guys in the nba do...

it's a mixture of things, the way basketball is played compared to football, in terms of one guy making a huge difference, basketball players can "take over" games like we've seen lebron do a ton of times... and the shelf life of nba stars is much, much longer than that of a football player...

it's the way things work, it also doesn't mean it's right...

absurd? maybe you should step back and re think your stance. i'm actually quite content with mine.

not to mention i've talked with numerous chicago fans, who all say it's a bears town, but micheal jordan was bigger than anything they've ever had, and they've had great football players, a few great baseball players, and a plethora of great hockey players (people have told me that a blackhawk ticket was the hottest ticket in town 25-30+ years ago)

i also know people who lived in minnesota and say that kevin garnett was by far bigger than any football and even any hockey player they have had at the time...

Dont think for a second anyone has forgot when you posted on here saying you were now a Yankees fan.

Or how you used to be a eagles fan, and a rams fan, and who knows what else.

why the assumption that i'm this huge pro-nba guy and anti-nfl/browns?

because of my name? not a very good assumption my friend...

i like lebron as much as the next guy, as well as basketball, but i truly love the browns and football more than basketball...

so, please don't assume things about me that you don't really know

oh, and 2119, lolz

so shouldn't he be crazy about lebron, will he buy those shoes i wonder?

Get a clue dude, on anything. You are out of your mind.

LeBron is and will continue to be LeBron. If you all don't understand what that is, you continue to be the ones that will never be satisfied.

We finally have some continuitty, yet you all find a reason to complain.

I have a feeling that if it was the Cleveland Patriots, you all would bich that we have not won 8 years in a row.

You're missing the point...

I said Cleveland is a BROWNS TOWN, and if we ever find someone who is THE DEFINITIVE FACE of the franchise, as in someone who's marketable enough and is everywhere on TV, and becomes successful in the NFL, he WILL BE the face of our city. Especially if he embraces all our teams.

Quinn is the only guy with the marketing punch to match LeBron, and he's in a more popular league to do so.

He won't get a $90 million shoe deal, but he'll get plenty of exposure to make him the face of Cleveland.

Ammo, come on man. Look at the leagues they play in for crying out loud. Please understand that the NFL is 10 times more a team game. BRADY QUINN WILL NEVER BE ABLE TO LEAD THE BROWNS TO A SUPER BOWL ALONE. LB has already taken a team in his league to the final round ON HIS BACK AND HAS NOT YET REACHED HIS PRIME. It may also be hard to understand for you since you have probably never lived outside of Ohio. Brady Quinn may be the greatest thing ever, but the thing is he needs a line and playmakers around him. He still needs the time to thrown and the running back to open up the passing game, and the receivers to get open

In the NBA, a player can do it HIMSELF. Also, ONE NBA PLAYER can make his other players much better. A QB can make his other players better, but not to the extent of what LB has done with some of these guys. Just reference LB"s career for proof of all this.

You act like he is some average suburban Cleveland kid like yourself. The kid did not have a father figure. You ever seen Gloria James?

You're completely missing the point...

And what does having a father figure have to do with whether or not someone is the face of your city?

Let's look at Pittsburgh...Sidney Crosby is the best player in the NHL. The ABSOLUTE BEST. Who's the face of the city?

Ben Roethlisberger. Golden Boy QB of the football team in a football city.

I know the NHL doesn't have anywhere near the exposure of the NFL, but dammit they love their Penguins in Pittsburgh, just like we love our Cavaliers in Cleveland. But the Penguins are NOT the Steelers, just like the Cavaliers are NOT the Browns.

Get it? We are a football city and we will want the leader of the football team to be our face (assuming this actually happens, it's not etched in stone that it will). To hell with what the rest of the country currently thinks, we'll make them see it our way in due time.

What I mean by not having a father figure is he did not have a man to point him in the direction of who he roots for. I am sure many of us on this board have our allegiances to Cleveland sports teams due to our dads/mothers.

In LB's case when he was 10,11 years old he was dealing with a single mother who was 26 and broke as a joke. Thus, he had no one to point him in the direction of who he should root for. He picked the Yanks and Cowboys since those franchises are associated with winning, it's that simple.

And to compare the Sidney Crosby thing is kind of funny, when you are comparing the NHL to the NBA it is not even close in terms of marketing/commericals/tv deals. The NBA has games on ESPN/ABC, and the classic TNT doubleheader on Thursdays that has turned into a tradition. Hell, the NHL national tv deal is on Versus during the week and has 1 game a weekend that starts half way through their season on NBC. When was the last time you saw SportsCenter start one of their broadcasts with an NHL story if it was not the Stanley Cup finals?

Cleveland is a small market. The Cavaliers are on National TV 21 times this season. That is a quarter of 81 game season due to one person. And that is not evening counting games on NBA TV. Unfortunately, the fans of Cleveland do not pick who their face is. The national networks and shoe companies/advertisers do. They have already made their choice and it's picking up steam by the day. LB is a brand himself at this point. Look at OSU's basketball jerseys. They have his L23 logo on them just like Carolina's have the jordan jumpmam logo. He has the logo, designs his clothing etc. And you aint seen anything yet. Wait till he wins the league MVP this year, an NBA title, etc. The kid is only 23....

you definitely implied that i was more a cavs guy then a browns guy, at least that's the way i took it

i'm no more a lebron fan than anyone else on here, it's just a message board name.

the browns will always be bigger than the cavs, but nba superstars will always be bigger... especially the select group like lebron...

also, nba teams, the good ones, make the playoffs just about every year, 16 teams make the playoffs

and as we've seen this year, good teams don't always make the playoffs in the nfl, which takes away exposure...
