Crennel likely to get another year
By Patrick McManamon
Crennel likely to get another year

Romeo Crennel's future as coach of the Browns is anything but certain as the team heads into the finale of a dismal season.

Circumstances, though, seem to indicate that Crennel will return for 2007.

That's because his future does not depend on how the team plays in this game.

It depends more on the fact that the Browns can't go ready-fire-aim again.

If they are to replace their coach, the team has to know who they will hire as the next coach.

The most recent two times the team hired a coach, they fired theirs and then conducted a search that resulted in the hiring of Butch Davis and Crennel.

The Browns now know that if Crennel is replaced, the team needs an experienced NFL coach with winning credentials.

No repeat of the college experiment, which had brief success before crashing and burning.

No repeat of the assistant promotion, which resulted in two struggling years and the lack of patience to see things through.

This time, the Browns would hire a particular type: a coach with NFL experience, a guy who has shown he knows how to win, a guy who would bring credibility from his resume.

Two names fit perfectly. Neither is available.

Bill Cowher appears ready to retire from the Pittsburgh Steelers after the season.

He has Cleveland connections and he knows the AFC North. If Cowher leaves the Steelers, however, he can't coach for another team in 2007 without permission from the Steelers because he is under contract through 2008.

It's hard to see the Rooney family letting their coach leave for their rival.

Jeff Fisher of the Tennessee Titans also comes to mind.

Fisher has been one of the league's best for years, and he's proving it again this season the way he's handling rookie quarterback Vince Young.

The Titans, though, have an option on Fisher for 2007, and reports from Nashville indicate that they will exercise that option.

The Titans then will try to work out a long-term deal with Fisher next year.

``Jeff isn't going anywhere,'' owner Bud Adams told The Tennessean earlier this month. ``We will have a deal with him.''

They'd be nuts not to have one.

Take those two perfect options off the board in 2007 and all that's left are what ifs.

As in, what if the Krafts really are disillusioned with Bill Belichick for his divorce, and and what if they let him go?

But if they do, how many other teams will fall over themselves to get him?

Is Dennis Green worth a shot? Would Jim Fassel change things?

If, if, if.

The Browns have to ask themselves: If there's nowhere to turn, why change?

And the other question they must ask: If there's no talent on the team, does it help to bring in a reputable coach who has no chance to win?

The consensus in Berea is that neither Vince Lombardi nor Chuck Noll could have done a lot more with the team this season. Injuries and circumstance took too much of a toll.

Some players have not produced the same way they did last season -- such as running back Reuben Droughns. Others have produced but been a mess (see Edwards, Braylon).

No matter, the team has very little talent.

So does it do any good to hire an experienced coach who has no chance to win, or do the Browns try to improve the talent and give Crennel one more year to see if he can pull things together?

If that works, the team is better.

If that doesn't work, then Fisher might be a free agent. Cowher will be one, and his next job might come down to Randy Lerner's dollars vs. Dan Snyder's in Washington.

Too, with more talent on hand, the Browns' job might be more attractive to a more experienced coach, if one is needed.

So while Crennel coaches the last game of the second season in his five-year contract, his future appears to be with the Browns in 2007.

But nothing is certain.

What's that?

How can Crennel be in trouble if the talent level is so low? Fair question.

The reason isn't the won-loss record, which has pleased nobody (duh).

The reason is that a coach who came with a reputation for being a disciplinarian has seemed like anything but, and the Browns present themselves as a team out of control, a team where the inmates run the asylum.

And it upsets players as well as management.

Crennel, for example, had many chances to make a statement with Edwards, most notably when he returned late from the Ohio State-Michigan game after being strongly advised not to go.

Nothing visible happened until Game 15, when Edwards' error had to be egregious. Even then, it only cost him 25 minutes of playing time.

Crennel could have put his proverbial foot up someone's proverbial you-know-what and stopped some of the nonsense early.

It's surprising that a man who grew up in a military family has not brought more visible discipline.

Crennel was asked if he should have brought ``the hammer'' down sooner this season.

``If you look around -- you make it sound like we're the only team talking about some of that stuff,'' Crennel said. ``That's not the case, and there are other guys who have similar problems they are dealing with.

``Like I told you before, every situation is different. The coach handles it the way that he thinks is best for his team.''

A half-full glass

The Baltimore Ravens said the Browns are not far away from being a good team.

The Ravens can say that because they know how fast a team can turn around. They were 6-10 a year ago and lost to the Browns. They're now 11-3 and heading to a first-round bye.

``They were ready to fire their coach,'' Crennel said. ``Now, they might go to the Super Bowl. It can happen in this league. As a coach, you coach the best you can and the hardest you can to get your guys to play the best they can and the hardest they can.''

Interesting to read the views from two different reporters on a similar topic.

Its awfully hard to blame RAC for most of the problems we have at this point, but its also tough to make a case for why he seems to be the "right guy".

Firing him to fire him makes no sense, but if they can get the "right" guy - so be it. Problem is - who above RAC do you trust to choose the "right" guy?

:sigh:what must be must be. If We have to keep the Milk Dud one more year to get a shot at a good coach so be it. Anyway of the two I'd rather have Fisher than Cowher....Fisher has always seemed...smarter to me than Cowher. Better looking as well

my thing is this...

how many super bowls has bill cowher won?

and two...

what coach has won a super bowl on a new team with mediocre talent?

Crennel IMO is a great coach.. a GREAT COACH!!! He is perfect for this team.. He's a defensive guy.. and thats why our defense always keeps us in games for the most part...

Offensively.. RAC has nothing to do with performance.. He may call a play.. the offensive coordinator may call a play.. but He is not the one dropping passes.. running bad routes.. not going after the ball... fumbling the ball... not blocking.. not reading the defense... Its not him...

RAC is the MAN!! and almost everyone wanted him when he left the Patriots.. and now he is chopped liver? why?!! cuz he has to coach a sorry team.. lol..

regardless of any record... i still believe that this team has grown.. Injuries killed this team starting with LeCharles Bentley and the other 10 centers we went though all the way to Gary Baxter and Leigh Bodden...

The Cleveland Browns are a team to watch out for.. The Browns right now are less than average.. and thats why their record is 4-11.... Average teams like the Falcons, Jets, etc. are at about .500... so too me.. we are not that far behind..

I love RAC but two things need to happen

1. We need a legit offensive coordinator and clean up the rest of our offensive coaches

2. RAC needs to lay the law down a bit more... we need to be a disciplined team

Romeo is soft, and that isn't going to change....or if it does it will be a forced change that will bring problems of it's own.

I don't really think Cower is an option.....Fisher...I would love him but he won't leave Nashville.

Martz is a guy I would look at. His knock was player selection decisions. Since Savage does that, it shouldn't be a problem....assuming he would take the job.

Some time back, I wanted Romeo to get another year. Now with all that has transpired and said, I honestly think we will be better served to wash our hands and make the move ASAP.

I compare it to that funny sound your car starts to make. You know something isn't right, but somehow think giving it some time will fix the problem.

We all know how that works out.

I dont think Cowher would come here even if allowed to. I really think he hit the Vermeil wall and is a burn out as a coach. It happens and in 5 years he will probaly be ready to return.

Martz would be a very good choice if we go the experienced route. Cam Cameron would be another good one. Heck I think Mora in Atlanta is a good coach just forced to play a QB that he doesnt believe in.

Assistants Russ Grimm is still high on my list. Rex Ryan love his brilliance, he imho is going to be not only a good HC but a great one.

I think a guy that might have a better shot than we have thought about is Grantham.

That is a large part of why I said what I did.

Bill Cower is a Steeler. He isn't a Brown any longer. People need to forget that connection.

Mike Martz????? please tell me why this guy would be a good choice ... thats twice I've seen his name now ... and for the life of me I can't figure out why (well other than its Peenie .. *L*) .. so please help me understand ... because quite frankly I don't think I could come up with a WORSE OPTION .. so please educate me on why Martz would make a good HC in Cleveland at this time ...

martz knows how to run an offense and he would step back and let his DC run the defense the way he wants. Now he needs to take a class in clock managment 101 and dont come anywhere near Phil on draft day.

U sittin down Peenie ... if not .. sit before u read on .. *L*

I agree ... I was thinking of that yesterday during my swim .... Cowher HAD ties to Cleveland many many years ago ... hes been in the Stiler Org. for HOW LONG NOW ... at some point he had to become a SQUEELER .. I mean 20 years (guessing here) in an Org. would seem to make u a part of that org in a way that would several ties with thier biggest rivals ...

I think in a year or two or 5 Cowher could come back depending on how much he misses it and how long it takes him to get over the burnout syndrome Mourg talks about as I agree with him as well on that point .... but unless its 5 (seperation time from being a squeeler) I dotn see hiim coming back as a Dawg ... I mean a Dawg just wouldnt look right with the black and yellow stripes Cowher has running down his legs from al that time in Stiler country . *L*

and guys .. RAC will be back next year ...

so U want an offense based on AIRING IT OUT and playing 3 and 4 WR sets more than u play with 2 WR sets .... and the TE is basically a GLORIFIED BLOCKER on the 3 or 4 plays hes ACTUALLY ON THE FIELD DURING A GAME in C-Town ... and oh BTW .. the ONE BACK SET with no FB as a lead blocker would work WONDERFULLY in Cleveland ..

not to mention the guy is a BUFOON ... did u watch many rams games when he was coaching?? clock management was HUGE .. but so were MANY OTHER THINGS HE DID .. such as going for 2 when he should have went for 1 and VICE VERSA ...

the guys idea of PROTECTING a lead is to throw the ball 40 yards insted of 50 .. *L* .. and u talk about NO ADJUSTMENTS ... look at the SB with the Pats as the shining example .. they should HAVE KILLED THEM ... but he didnt make ONE SINGLE ADJUSTMENT .. NE ate them up on D and most of it came from pressure on warner .. and Martz made ZERO ADJUSTMENTS to try and ease the pressure .. I can't remember if it was Tuck or the other idiot they had playing RT that day (actually I think they both played some) and after about 2 series STUPID OLD ME said that he needs to get that guy some HELP .. he never ever did ... the biggest play of the game .. PRESSURE FROM THE RT TACKLE SPOT and he throws the pick to Law for the TD ..

I have no clue what u see in Martz .. but he was a HORRIBLE HORRIBLE HEAD COACH .. when i used to watch their games I would more times than not think .. does this guy think of what the smart thing is to do and immediately do the oppsite .. he did the STUPIDEST THING possible so many times ..

and his O philosophy is GREAT for warm weather/dome teams .. on the lake in Dec/Jan .. HORRIBLE HORRIBLE FIT ..

this guy is a BAFOON as a HC and he is actually way over rated as an O -Coordinator IMO .. and its another example of how TALENT is by far the biggest factor (there ard guys like Parcells and Fisher and Billicheck that can make a differnce . but they can only make a difference when they have the TALENT to begin with .. and I dotn thinnk Cowher is one of those difference makers .. I think hes a good/solid coach .. but thats it .. he aint a difference maker IMO) .. he had Faulk and Bruce and Pace in their primes .. along with a GREAT QB to implement that system and a BUDDING STUD IN HOLT .... now fast forward to this year .. he has one of the best WR's in football in Williams .. a dam good RB in Jones .. and a decent LT in Backus ... AND THATS IT .. and the LIONS O WAS HORRIFIC .. and i mean HORRIFIC ..

if we hired Martz I'd PUKE and just give up till he was gone and Randy sold the team ..

Two things:

1] I ain't sure if Cowher would come here. In fact, I have no clue. It's just wishful thinknig on my part. But, I ain't buying that he wouldn't come here just cause he coached the Steelers. Parcells is coaching in Dallas. He did coach in NY, you know.

2] Martz is an idiot. He sucked as a head coach. The Rams had a ton of offensive talent. More than anyone. His coaching blunders killed that team. Oh..........and how good is Detroit's offense this year, w/the brilliant Martz running the show? Mike Martz would be an awful choice.

Parcells is in Dallas after over a decade away from the Giants ... I said Cowher may come here after some time away from the Stilers ... i would be STUNNED if he came here in 08 . STUNNED .. I would actually be STUNNED if he ever came here .. but if its gonna happen .. theres gonna be a time gap ..

The fans wanting Rac's dome should BE ASKING THE SAME THING..THAT INCLUDES a lot in here..
Ra cshould be be back...no talent, no wins....get the talent the rest will hapen.
Cowher? No..he is a Pukebugh man..

This sounds like more re-hashing of Mary Kay's article right down to the same two coaching non-options. I would really like to know how high up her source is, and can't help but thinking that so much of this story is speculation and muckraking because a) there's nothing else to write about and b) it makes for great fear mongering which the media relies on for story appeal and shelf life. I also wonder how much of this "hot story" is sour grapes by Mary Kay for getting dissed once or twice about every other press conference by RAC for asking stupid questions. All this speculation and wonder is just that, because once the season is over, (tomorrow or Tuesday,) I figure Savage will come out with a statement quelling the RAC rumors, with his and Randy's full support behind him, and I expect he'll lay out the groundwork for the off season without being specific to the point he tips his hand. If there's one thing about this organization you gotta like no matter what you think of them, it's that they've been consistent in their approach and manage to keep an even keel no matter how intense the [censored]-storm. They may not always react as quickly as the media or fans wish, (whether it's because they're considering options, attempting to resolve things internally, or are just plain confused,) they do address and deal with those problem situations that occur. They need to qwell this now because the last thing they need going into this off season is a lame duck coach killing time until 2008. JMO

I would trust any of these guys above RAC. He tried to cover his butt at the beginning of the season by saying we could be a better team with a worse record? That never sat well with be because what coach at the beginning of a season concedes that they have no chance of winning that year?!? He should have just resigned then.

My top 3:
Cam Cameron ? Runs the offense in SD but a 5 year old could probably do that if they had LT.
Brian Schottenheimer ? Offensive coordinator of the 10-6 Jets who just made the playoffs after a horrible 2005 season.
Bobby Petrino ? 40-9 as a head coach at Louisville and won the big east this year.

The ?funny? thing about all 3 of these guys are they played quarterback in college which shows me that they have a good grasp on how to manage a game from the offensive point of view and won?t be affriad to air it out. Our defense isn?t in disarray like our offense it just can?t stop the run, ever.

The best of the rest:
Kirk Ferentz, Pete Carroll, Mark Richt, Tommy Tuberville, Houston Nutt and Les Miles.

Special Consideration:
Jim Tressel ? If we cloned tressel I would allow his clone to coach the Browns because if he ever leaves tOSU it better be when he is 108 and blind, def and dumb.

I've done just the opposite. Where I wanted Romeo gone, I'm now thinking bring him back.

Force him to make coaching changes and bring in an experienced OC.

I think that is what is best for this team right now. With so much work cut out for us in free agency and the draft, I just think we need to keep Romeo in place.

I don't think the idea that forcing him to make coaching changes will have any effect whatsoever on the 'team' concept he preaches as you alluded to in another thread. There is no correlation there whatsoever.

The 3-4 defense is the biggest snag. If RAC were to be fired, the process of going back to the 4-3 would be rough.

i like the 3-4... it works...

proof in the pudding.. a rookie getting over 10 sacks..

stay with the 3-4 and good things will CONTINUE to happen for our defense...

Our defense is pretty solid... even with 3rd/4th string CB's... imagine if we had our initial starters...

RAC stays...

quick question.. is Davidson still the offensive line coach too?

Said it before...give me a coach with NFL HC experience. The new Browns have not had a HC with NFL HC experience since its rebirth.

We need a guy who has been there, done that...even if it wasn't all that great.

WSU Willie...... I totally agree! So why not a HC who is available for the taking, one with a winning track record as a HC. One that HAS taken his team to the SB, I believe twice, plus has a proven histroy of developing good QB's.

Just give him a call, that's right, Martz is that guy and he would be available. After all he's done EVERYTHING that the totally incompetent RAC has FAILED so miserably to do. Why put up with a proven LOOSER when a proven WINNER is available, it makes NO sense at all.

[color:"orange"]Ya mean you heard that funny sound and really thought if you did nothing it would go away...so ya it didn't and you had to throw that car away a year later.

So your moral of the story is save your self the time and agony...throw that car away now.

Me...stupid me...I go and fix that car...woah!!! wouldn't ya know that funny sound was the freakin transmission going. Got it done right and check all the other bells and whistles and Voila you got yourself a good sound car for another 5-10 years if need be!

Don't throw RAC away...fix the transmission...get better players and see it through.

Sorry but your way is a complete waste of assets.

As for Cowher...I've read that on another thread somewhere...well actually couldn't cause it was all based on one posters opinions which I can't read.

Cowher??? lol thats funny that people are suggesting that...as if yeah he would give up a team that is one year away from the SB to come here and manage this quagmire we are trying to pull out of an expansion muck.

Oh thats right he spent a couple of years here as Diam says and you and others...he's a friggen Steeler now to the bone. And all he does is laugh at us as they pound us and if its close just cry to the refs over n over. Just like Fisher. and Coughlin when he was a Jag coach. The bullies to the Expansion kids...which we have never left still yet.

But why on earth would Cowher leave the Steelers and come here...I hate the Steelers and love the Browns and I think that would be the most stupidest thing to do...lol

1,3,5 10 who knows how long it would take to stop hating us and join us. But who cares RAC is staying for at least one more season.

Cowher is leaving the Steelers. He's been there 15 years and it's time to move on for him. He's stale. He was nearly stale before they won the SB. He may sit out a year then come back to coaching, but there's allready rampant rumors that his people are talking to the Dolphins. So why would he leave the Steelers to deal with that mess, which isn't hardly any better than this mess?

So he's a Steeler and won't ever come here. That's laughable. He's allready out of there, and will come back to whichever teams offers him the best package. Whether that's in '07 or '08 remains to be seen, but if you think he'll not come to another team in the AFC North just because he spent 15 years on Pittsburgh you're blind to how coaches are. The days of "brand loyalty" are gone in the NFL. Coaches and players chase the dollar. Times change.

Hehe...actually, I do.

When a car needs tires, time for a new car.

The point on Rac is I don't think it can be fixed...but this has been rapped on for a while and nobody is going to change their basic views, so I will leave it alone.

I am convinced RAC will get another year, so complaining isn't going to do me any good.

It is what it is....a typical Browns off-season full of question marks.

Mr. Peen, as a gator fan I find your .....judgement questionable....but as far as your opinion goes I think you are spot on as far as the Browns and the RAC situation. I too have stopped crying about this lump of clay we call a head coach. All I am waiting for now, as far as the off season goes, is the Rod Serling narration to begin...."Submitted for your approval....the Cleveland Browns..a team mired in the swamp of mediocrity..despite all the signs that point to this coach having deficiency after deficiency the Browns stick with him...couldn't happen you say? Not in a rational world? This isn't a rational world. Good readers you have just crossed over into.....The Twilight Zone!"

The fact that the Browns are asking to interview ASSISTANT coaches is a pretty good indicator that RAC gets another year. If he was gone they'd be going after a head man first and then letting him help pick the staff.

Crennel probably won't go so soon

Browns may be in bidding war for Cowher after 2007 season

By Patrick McManamon
Beacon Journal sportswriter

The odds that the Browns will change their coach went from slim to slimmer Friday when Bill Cowher insisted he will not coach in the NFL in 2007. That takes him off the playing field for any NFL team looking for a coach during the offseason (or one pondering a change), but means that he'll be a top candidate in 2008.

``The only thing that I'm looking forward to is spending time with my family,'' Cowher said at a news conference announcing his resignation. ``And I'm really looking forward to it.''

The Browns, meanwhile, continue to reshuffle their offensive coaching staff. Four coaches were informed in the past two days that they would not return: wide receivers coach Terry Robiskie, tight ends coach Ben Coates, strength and conditioning coach John Lott and offensive quality control coach Carl Crennel.

Crennel is the nephew of head coach Romeo Crennel, so that move could not have been easy.

That being said, it shows that Crennel is willing to make moves that he and General Manager Phil Savage deem are necessary.

``I would like to thank these four coaches for their service to the Browns since my arrival here two years ago,'' Crennel said in a statement released by the team Friday. ``Especially Terry Robiskie, who served as wide receivers coach, offensive coordinator and interim head coach during his six years with the Browns. These decisions were made with the best interest of the franchise in mind.''

For now, at least, the other offensive coaches -- line coach/interim offensive coordinator Jeff Davidson, assistant line coach Jeff Uhlenhake, running backs coach Dave Atkins and quarterbacks coach Rip Scherer -- seem safe.

Cowher's name is relevant only because he is the kind of coach the team might like to hire -- if it decided to replace Crennel.

But Cowher said he does not want to be on the sidelines this season. Even if he did -- and a change of mind would be shocking -- his contract with the Steelers went through the 2007 season so the Browns would need the Steelers' permission to interview him and then would have to give the Steelers draft-pick compensation to hire him.

That's if they are inclined to change their head coach, and there is no indication they are.

Though Cowher said he was not burned out, he was also asked if he could see himself coaching in 2007.

``You know,'' he said, ``right now what I can see myself doing is spending time on my family and working on my golf game, which needs a lot of work. So, uh, no.''

That means the unofficial ``Cowher watch'' could start if the Browns struggle in 2007.

And Cowher -- a former Browns player and assistant coach -- could be the object of a feverish bidding war among several teams (Cleveland, Washington?) for the 2008 season.

The Browns, meanwhile, continue the retooling of their staff. And the team's prime focus will be on the offensive coordinator.

Reports have Miami Dolphins quarterback coach Jason Garrett going to interview. Garrett is the son of former Browns coach Jim Garrett, and he attended University School before going to Princeton. He was a backup quarterback with Dallas and the Giants for most of his 12-year career.

If he were named coordinator, it would be a big leap -- Garrett has been an assistant coach for just two years.

Davidson also is expected to interview for the post he filled since Maurice Carthon resigned Oct. 24.

One other intriguing possibility is Mike Mularkey, who spent last season in Miami with the Dolphins. Mularkey had success as offensive coordinator of the Steelers before going to Buffalo as head coach.

The Browns would have to check on Mularkey's contract status, but he could be available due to the departure of Nick Saban to Alabama.

Actually I feel kind of sorry for Romeo.

He wanted the job so bad he signed into a deal that makes him little more than Savage's little bitch.

[color:"white"]I would have signed it as well. It doesn't look as though any other team was interested in him as their #1 candidate, and at his age, this was his only shot.

Now that isn't to say he doesn't have input into things. However, after the Mo fiasco, his days of credible input were over. Sure, they know he knows what he's talking about in many instances, but he showed a distinct lack of judgement in how he handled that situation, so they've probably taken away his input in who his coaches are going to be.

This is why I wanted him relieved of his duties. He's a puppet coach who's allready on the hot seat and the off-season hasn't even started yet. If he doesn't come out of the gate winning, every single mistake will put players, fans, and media on pins and needles. It won't be long after that before he fired.

It's like Butch's last year all over again.........
