Rob Oller commentary: Pryor shouldn't have to scramble to make his decision
Thursday, February 7, 2008 3:12 AM
By Rob Oller

For a player so adept at eluding tacklers, No. 1 quarterback recruit Terrelle Pryor has people all down his back.

Just because he's an 18-year-old who can't make up his mind. Or won't make up his mind, depending on your viewpoint.

Two lines formed yesterday immediately after Pryor announced on national signing day that he had nothing much to announce, that he was not choosing Ohio State over Michigan or Michigan over Ohio State, that he would put off a decision to better study his options, which also include Penn State and Oregon.

The longer line includes those critics who consider Pryor to be something of a prima donna who extended the recruiting process because he craves the attention.

This line carries the three-word dismissal, "Who needs him?"

The shorter line, where I stand, includes those who don't necessarily agree with how Pryor has handled the situation -- the 6-foot-6, 230-pound senior seems to contradict himself at every turn -- but realize that teenagers change their minds once every 27 seconds.

Essentially, Pryor is confused. He doesn't like to disappoint people -- "I want to be fair to all the coaches," he said -- and is quite impressionable, which displayed itself in the past two days. A few insiders think the QB from Jeannette, Pa., had decided over the weekend to commit to somewhere, but backed off after discussing things with his father, Craig, who advised him to take more time.

National signing day is, after all, only the first day to sign with a school. Recruits have until April 1 to decide. You wouldn't know that from the way recruiting outlets and some members of the media act. ESPNU was particularly disgusting in the way it modeled national signing day after the NFL draft, listing each player's strengths and weaknesses and turning high school gyms into sound stages on which recruits routinely embarrass themselves.

A colleague wondered why this bothered me, pointing out the only difference between national signing day and the draft is the age of the players.

Exactly. Age matters. A typical 18-year-old does not handle the recruiting spotlight as well as a college draft pick. The line of demarcation is open to debate; that there is a line is not.

It doesn't serve a student's best interest when ESPNU shows wide receiver recruit T.J. Lawrence sitting at a table lined with college hats, only to have the player narrow his choice by tossing aside caps with comments like, "I can't go to Virginia Tech."

Lawrence, like Pryor, could have declined the invitation to be on camera. But there needs to be accountability on both ends, and I don't see it with ESPN.

Those attacking Pryor for seeking attention need to remember who demands the attention be sought. Not just the media, but also fans who fancy themselves talent experts and think they can spot character better than college coaches.

Ohio State fans who just know the Buckeyes would be better off without Pryor should talk to Jim Tressel, who wouldn't be putting a full-court press on the QB if he didn't want the kid.

In fact, Pryor possesses a trait that Tressel absolutely has to love. The Ohio State coach expects his quarterbacks to make quick decisions. So how does that describe Pryor, who still hasn't made up his mind?

Ah, but even more important to Tress is that his QB make the right decision.

Pryor wants to get it right. If he has to make a few mistakes along the way, so be it. In the end, it's the correct call that matters most.

I guess maybe I just don't see the significance to him stating his choice now.. if he needs more time, so be it. It's a pretty important decision to make.

Just confirmed McGuffie signed and faxed his LOI........that caps off a recruiting class for UM that boasts 17 4-star recruits, in a year where there was a coaching change. Pretty good stuff from Carr and RR.

I'm excited to see McGuffie and how his game translates to the college level. Brian Leonard 2.0 anyone?

He's in a bit of a different mold then Leonard. He's more Reggie Bush (i.e. slashing, cutback runner). He's not really the Leonard type, who's going to run with a lot of power or break too many tackles. He needs to get stronger in his legs, which a college S&C program will definitely do.

McGuffie is a track star though and ran a 4.32 40 at the start of his junior year. If you get him in space and he gets a step, you're not going to run him down. His measurables are off the charts: 4.32 40, 355 LB bench press, 41 inch vertical, 15 bench reps (225 LBS). For a kid coming out of HS, those are just incredible numbers for an all-purpose back/scat back type.

I agree, but Michigan fans brag about "stealing" kids from Ohio. I don't get it. It's not theft, they HAVE to recruit Ohio.

coming from you that is absolutely priceless.

I guess I don't understand your humor. What's there to stealing a kid that wasn't going to Ohio State anyway ?? Not that I really care.

WHAT'S NEXT FOR PRYOR?
from Rivals.com

Pryor talks about decision | NCAA D-I recruiting calendar | Rivals.com Recruiting Glossary
The biggest news on National Singing Day was not necessarily who signed and with what program.

Julio Jones to Alabama? Very compelling.

Darrell Scott to Colorado over Texas? A huge get for the Buffs, no doubt.

But Signing Day was more about who didn't sign with what program than anything else.

So, where do we go from here with the Terrelle Pryor saga?

Penn State will likely have the most contact with Pryor before the signing deadline of April 1.
If you've been living under a rock, Pryor is the nation's No. 1 high school football player. He is a 6-foot-6, 235-pound quarterback who is often compared to Vince Young.

On Tuesday afternoon, Pryor was set to sign with Ohio State and try to help Jim Tressel get the Buckeyes over the national championship hump. However, everything changed Tuesday night.

After a lengthy conversation with his father Craig, Pryor decided to delay putting his signature on any letter on Wednesday. Craig Pryor wanted his son to take an official visit to Penn State and give them another look before making his decision. So what happens next, and how does this affect the schools involved?

What now?

Unless Pryor decides to take a visit to Oregon - something he mentioned as a possibility, but still remains a long shot - then Penn State will have the most contact with Pryor before the signing deadline of April 1.

Each school can call Pryor once per week, but they cannot leave campus to visit Pryor at school, home or anywhere else. However, if he takes an official visit to Penn State, the Nittany Lions coaches will have his full attention for 48 hours. That extra time will be valuable and must be used effectively to convince Pryor that Penn State can run an offense that fits his style.

Ohio State still has to be considered the team to beat. Pryor has built a strong bond with numerous Ohio State signees, he likes the coaching staff and the area, and he knows he'd be enrolling in Columbus with three of the top offensive linemen in the country – Mike Adams, J.B. Shugarts and Michael Brewster. Pryor has also become close with wide receiver DeVier Posey - who would likely be his main target - and top tight end Jake Stoneburner.

The throng of media that attended Terrelle Pryor's Signing Day press conference got a story, just not the one they were expecting.
However, Penn State has Pryor's father in their corner, and clearly Terrelle has a great respect for his dad. This isn't like the Vidal Hazelton situation a few years ago where Vidal's father, Dexter, refused to sign Vidal's letter because he felt Southern California wasn't a good fit for his son. Hazelton took another visit to Penn State after Letter of Intent Day back in February 2006, but did so begrudgingly. He ended up signing with USC in the end.

Open mind

Pryor doesn't seem to be upset at the delay in his decision, and seems to be open-minded when it comes to giving Penn State another look.

Unlike Hazelton, Pryor wasn't 100 percent set on his decision to sign with his top school on Signing Day. That's very good news for Penn State, and keeps Oregon on life support in this race.

The big loser in this decision appears to be Michigan, the team that would have finished second to Ohio State on Wednesday. The Wolverines don't have anyone pushing for them at this point.

Pryor hopes to take his official visit to Penn State as soon as he can, but a date hasn't been set yet. He'll determine if he'll take a visit to Oregon soon as well.

Ohio State has to hope that he'll take an unofficial visit to Columbus as well to give them equal face time, but that might not happen. The same can be said for Michigan, although Ann Arbor is farther away than Columbus.

Regardless, we'll all know where the nation's top player will end up soon enough.

This recruiting battle has become a lot more interesting.

My take on this... Pryor out of respect for his father is going to go to Penn State and see what they have to offer. He doesn't seem like he has been in touch with PSU a lot throughout the process and likely doesn't have the connections with fellow recruits and players as much as he does with the Bucks.

I think Pryor will ultimately be a Buckeye after visiting Penn State. I personally think that he could have possibly turned Michigan around by year 2, but at PSU... it will take longer.

I also read somewhere that the conversation with his father was a little heated, but ultimately ended in him showing respect for his father. I forget what article I read that in.

I can really see his Dad putting the pressure on him to give Penn State a shot, assuming, that since they live in Jeanette, where Dad had decided to raise and provide for his family, that he is -- possibly -- a lifelong resident of Pennsylvania, and thus a huge Penn State fan -- big assumptions on my part -- and he would really like to see his boy on Nittany Mountain.

I really don't understand the hoopla around an Oregon visit,....waste of time.

And apparently college basketball is not even a factor,....

Hell, he might be setting everyone up for a big fall (NPI), and be headed for Texas or Oklahoma or Miami,....

Michigan's "turnaround" doesn't hinge on one player. At this point, I'd prefer a guy like Feagin (who has a great attitude, is a hard worker and will be playing with a chip on his shoulder). When Pryor was asked what was the most rewarding part of the recruiting process / what was something he wouldn't change about it he said "just people knowing me, knowing who I am." OSU can have the kid. I'd honestly prefer Michigan pull his offer and award it to a walk-on or another recruit.

Rodriguez was winning at WVU with recruiting classes ranked in the 40's and 50's. He doesn't "need" ONE player, no matter how good he might eventually be. He got TWICE as many 4/5-star players this season (17) then he did his entire tenure (7 years) at WVU (8). That's kind of an incredible stat given how good WVU has been the last 3 years.

His system, infused with the talent Michigan has (and can attract) is going to win games (and a lot of them). It's won on every level and will continue to do so in the Big Ten. RR and his staff have been great at maximizing a player's talent/potential, an area where the previous staff seemed to slowly be on the decline. It may not happen in the first year (or maybe it will, who knows) but Michigan will certainly be competitive this season. Given how much young talent they'll have getting experience this season, being a serious Big Ten/ national title contender contender in 2009 is not out of the question.

I'm not saying that Michigan really needs a huge turnaround, but they certainly regressed last season. That's why I said that. Pull the Pryor offer? I know the kid seems to get off on the attention he is getting, but if he committed tomorrow to Michigan.. you'd likely go nuts and rub it in the face of Buckeye fans that you have the #1 player in the nation. At least that's what I would do.

Knowing Nas I'm sure he feels the way I feel on it... I'd love to have Pryor... but I don't really care that much if he goes somewhere else... UM and OSU are bigger than any one player...

I am glad he's taking his time if it's because he wants to make sure he makes the right choice for the right reasons... but I am tired of all the headlines and media attention that he's getting... it's really not that big of a deal... just a young man trying to decide where he wants to spend the next couple of years.

Jay pretty much summed it up. It's just my personal opinion (on pulling the scholarship offer) and no, I'm really not going to go nuts if Michigan lands Pryor. Some of his comments have actually raised some red flags. Like the one about the best part of recruiting being "just people knowing me." I prefer a player like Michigan got at QB. Justin Feagin is an incredibly athletic player, with a terrific attitude, who wasn't being given the chance to play QB by other big schools. You just can't underestimate the power of playing with a chip on your shoulder. Players that have something to prove, combined with a ton of raw talent and a great attitude are the ones I want. Not players who have the red carpet rolled out for them before they're even enrolled in college. It's also not like Feagin is chopped liver either. Kid Ran for 20+ TD's and threw for 20+ TD's this season. He's a player. I loved these quotes from him:

Feagin said he would welcome Pryor at Michigan, and hopes the dual-threat quarterback - with a similar style to Feagin - ends up in Ann Arbor.

"That really lets me see where I stand as a quarterback and if I really have enough potential," Feagin said. "He's a good player, and if he goes there that means I have to work twice as hard to get what I want.

"I don't want anybody to guarantee me a spot. I want them to say 'you can get it if you work at it.' "

Feagin believes he still has doubters. The same people who didn't think he could lead Heritage to a state championship still have some questions about succeeding at Michigan.

"Everyone who doesn't believe in me, I'm still about to prove you wrong," Feagin said. "I did it one time, and as long as God gives it to me, I'll keep proving people wrong."

Kid's got a great attitude.....

As Jay said, one player is not going to make or break Ohio State or Michigan. There's no reason to wait for a player that most likely is not going to sign with you, regardless of how good he is. Unless the coaches know something that everyone else doesn't, indications have been that he's going to sign with OSU. So, why sit on a scholarship that could go to another deserving player (current) or another recruit? The class of 2009 has a TON of good dual threat QB's that will surely be interested in Michigan.

Michigan is probably going to have some rough patches next season, as they're going to be starting first year players almost across the board on offense (they'll have first year starters at ZWR, SWR, QB, RB, OT and OG). Pryor might help cover a bit of that up in the short term but the offensive growing pains are going to be there. Michigan is going to lean heavily on a defense that returns 8 starters and count on them keeping them in to games while the offense works out the kinks.

Supposedly Pryor has eliminated Oregon and Michigan (shocker) from his list and is now down to OSU and PSU. This was reported on Buckeyeplanet.com

Pretty surprising that Michigan would be eliminated that quickly. The article went on to say that RR's recruiting techniques have offended everyone in the Big Ten and starting to spread.

Seeing how Michigan picked up a QB, I can see Pryor backing off from that school. Pryor is doing all he can about making this about him, and UM had the audacity to grab a QB while Pryor was on the fence. The school lost Mallet already, they needed to do something.

I know this is the biggest decision Pryor has had to make, but it's also the hardest decision hundreds of other kids have had to make, too, and they managed to do on signing day.

IMHO Pryor is milking this for everything he's got. Let's see how well this translates to the field.

I know that that was just speculation, but if it has any truth to it at all, I'll be glad when Pryor goes somewhere else. If Michigan getting a QB prospect that will create a bit of competition for Pryor, and that scares him off, then I don't want him. He is obviously talented, but to expect a job basically handed to you without any competition just shows to be that he feels he is owed something and isn't willing to work to earn the job.

So Pryor wanted to go to OSU, but his dad really wants him to go to Penn State. PSU is going to get the most face time with Pryor and his dad is almost demanding he attend there; OSU's chances get smaller everyday.

In all honesty I don't even care anymore, I stopped following after he added LSU to the mix a few weeks ago. If he comes great, if not; c'est la vie.

I wouldnt say his dad is demanding he attend there. I think his dad is wanting him to make the best choice and that in his mind must require a trip to PSU to avoid future regret. Pryor's mother wants him to make the best choice for him. It seems like a family that wants what is best for the kid and helping him in the decision making process. I don't know why it has taken so long since many other football stars jump into bball seasons and still made the committment. While Pryor or no Pryor, OSU has the kids they need to succeed for an extended time. However, with Pryor, they've added the QB they so desperately need. I'll take Pryor over a 3 star next year (which chould happen if OSU can't get the committment from the QB's they target and settle for what's left).

Column I read from his backyard this morning in The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette
********************************************************************************
It's time to end the Pryor saga
Sunday, February 10, 2008

I'm going to take a big risk here and assume that you'll keep reading after you see the subject.

The recruitment of Terrelle Pryor.

Thanks for justifying my faith.

I'm with you, I'm sick and tired of the Pryor saga. The next time I read his name on these pages or see him on television, I hope it's when he announces his college. From a selfish standpoint, I'm hoping it's Penn State so I can watch this marvelous athlete play. But it wouldn't matter if it's Eastern Michigan -- his mentor Charlie Batch's school -- which doesn't seem so unrealistic the way Pryor keeps adding colleges to his list and subtracting them five minutes later. Of course, that's his prerogative. He's 18, for one. It's his life, for two. It's important that he makes the right choice and is happy. He doesn't have to do it on my timetable or yours.

That's why Pryor is the last person you should blame for making his recruiting story so tiresome. You want to finger somebody? Finger the media for its over-the-top coverage. It would be easy to single out Channel 11 for breathlessly leading its noon newscast Wednesday by going to Jeannette High School where Pryor announced he was announcing nothing. That was pretty ridiculous. But that would be hypocritical on my part. This is the newspaper that runs the Terrelle Pryor Diary even though the kid hasn't been around long enough to have anything substantial to say. As my esteemed colleague Gene Collier points out in our SportsNOW podcast this week, "It's a problem when he writes more in the paper than I do."

But, obviously, there's an audience for this nonsense. Web sites devoted to recruiting are all over the Internet. They cater to a troubled class of people -- those who seem to live and die with where a teenager decides to play his college football. On the sports fans food chain, they rank right above the pesky adult autograph seekers you see hanging around every sports event. They need to get a life.

Then, there are the college coaches who add to a top recruit's confusion with their full-court, non-stop pressure. These coaches make hundreds of thousands of dollars or -- in the case of some head coaches -- millions, yet their jobs seem so demeaning at times. Their livelihoods depend on the whims of 17- and 18-year-old kids, which leads to a lot of teenaged butt-smooching.

Penn State defensive coordinator Tom Bradley might be the best recruiter in the country. It's believed he's the only reason Pryor is interested in Penn State. Their relationship is such that Pryor will have a hard time looking Bradley in the eye and telling him he's going to Ohio State or Michigan, if it comes to that. (Sorry, Eastern Michigan fans). Imagine what a coach has to do to build that kind of relationship.

In Pryor's case, Bradley has worked his family. "My father loves him," Pryor told the Post-Gazette's Mike White. Bradley also has sent page after page of handwritten notes to Pryor. What could he possibly be telling him? You know, other than how much he loves him as a player?

"You might write to congratulate a kid on a game or comment on something happening in his life or mention something that's going on at Pitt," said Pitt coach Dave Wannstedt, another excellent recruiter who signed just about every top prospect in Pennsylvania other than Pryor. Wannstedt has mailed his share of letters and sees nothing demeaning about the recruiting process. "Recruiting is sales," he said. "If you've got a good product and you believe in that product, it's easy to sell."

Recruiting used to be crazier, if you can believe that. Before text-messaging recruits was banned by the NCAA last summer, Wannstedt said he would text 25 recruits at a time and "fall asleep with my phone on my chest." Trinity High School linebacker Andrew Sweat told the Post-Gazette's White that he once received 40 texts in one day from the Notre Dame coaching staff. Apparently, the Ohio State staff sent a few more because Sweat signed with the Buckeyes last week.

There also are more dead periods in recruiting when the coaches aren't allowed to contact recruits. Wannstedt tells the story that, when he was an assistant at Miami, he visited the Tampa home of offensive lineman Kipp Vickers.

On Christmas Eve.

Sorry, that's demeaning.

Wannstedt got his man, by the way. Vickers, who went on to a seven-year NFL career, picked Miami over Michigan.

Pryor, too, eventually will make his college choice. If I were him, I'd take all the time I needed to make the right choice, no matter how much anguish it might cause the concerned coaches and the fans who live on the Internet. I'd probably throw in a trip to Oregon for an official visit even if I had no interest in going there. Why not use the system? Everyone else in the process is using Pryor.

Yeah, what I find funny is that Tiller was moaning about RR landing one of his verbals when he did the same thing to Ball State. Purdue took away their best recruit at the last minute. Wonder what's cooking in the kettle??

Michigan is a better program, end of story. Maybe that rubs Tiller the wrong way but you can't blame a kid for wanting to play on national TV and compete for conference titles year in and year out. He said he would have gone to Michigan from the get-go had he been offered early, so it wasn't much of a shock to anyone (besides TIller) when he de-committed after RR extended a scholarship offer.

Michigan just got a late commit from 4-star WR/ATH Martavious Odoms out of Florida. Another speedster. 4.4 40 yard dash and a 10.6 100 meters.

The more the better. The more players we get now that can fit into the offense, the faster the transition will be.

It was a nice get by RR and Co. as they wrestled this kid away from Miami. Making inroads to Florida is a great sign.

Michigan officially offered 5-star Junior QB Russell Shepard. Nice insurance policy to Pryor.

Shepard said he will make his decision by September 1st (before his final HS football season) and it's looking really good for UM early.

“I would say Texas is still up there, but Michigan is really at the top of my list, especially if they don’t get (2008 top recruit) Terrelle Pryor,” he said. “I feel like I could go there and play right away. I’m also looking at Florida and LSU. Both of those schools have pretty good depth-chart situations for me.”

He also is on schedule to graduate HS in December and would enroll early at UM.

Kid is ridiculous.......this is from his SOPHMORE year.

I had to watch a full minute and 30 seconds to see the QB (it is supposed to be a QB, right?) throw a pass.

I wouldn't go getting all super crazy excited about that kid being your QB.... you could well be setting yourself up for disappointment.

As a Hurricane fan, I was quite upset on that one. Miami had an amazing recruiting class, but I really liked Odoms speed a good deal. Not quite so big on his attitude, but I think Randy Shannon would have been able to control him.

Those were kinda my thoughts as well. Perhaps he'll be a running back where ever he finally decides to go.

Yeah Russell is considered an athlete in the recruiting world for a reason. He is likely not going to be taking to many snaps in college.

That whole video was also from his sophomore year. I know he is considered an athlete, and he very well may end up as a RB or WR, but a lot of teams in high school football only pass the ball 10 times a game or so, some even less. If he shows he can throw the ball at least adequately, then he has a decent chance of playing quarterback in a spread option offense. He could also of passed more this year, and maybe even more next year, I'm not sure. Pat White has run the WVU very well, and he isn't that good of a passer. As long as the guy can throw the ball when needed, he has a chance to be pretty good in the spread option.

Shepard has great mechanics and a good arm, he can definitely throw. His Rivals videos are much better (at showing his arm/passing ability) but they're premium content. I'll try to dig one up on youtube or elsewhere.

He's somewhat raw (in terms of accuracy) but his natural physical skills throwing the ball are very good. I've also read a scouting report on him that said his receivers aren't that great and have dropped a lot of passes.

He's really relaxed and smooth on his delivery. It all looks pretty effortless for him. He's kind of got a Michael Vick type arm coming out of HS.....it's definitely live but he sometimes doesn't know where it's going. He's leaned on his running but when necessary, he can really zip the ball.

He's around a 60/40 guy in terms of run/pass......not quite as heavily weighted as the video may seem.

I second that.

I will be surprised to see RR's offense be as dominant in the Big10 as it was in the Big East.

Ask Oklahoma if they think RR's offense is dominant.

Pat White sucks?

I guess I'm kind of unsure how that comment might be justified or do you just dislike running QB's?

Pat White had 1,700 yards passing (14 TD's 4 INT's) and 1,300 yards rushing (14 TD's). A guy that produced 3,000+ yards, 28 total TD's (ZERO fumbles) and only turned the ball over 4 times sucks?

I hope all of Michigan's QB's "suck" like that in RR's offense.

As a Buckeye fan, RR's offense scares me a bit. Spread offenses have killed us over the past several years....Purdue runs a spread, but they can't get the talent that Michigan can. It's going to be interesting, that's for sure. I look at it as a good thing though as at least we'll get to play against a strong team that runs that type of O.
