Report: Chargers, Saints to meet in London on Oct. 26

It looks like the San Diego Chargers and the New Orleans Saints will be the next group of NFL teams to take their show overseas.

According to The San Diego Union-Tribune, the Chargers will play the Saints in London on Oct. 26. The game will most likely take place at Wembley Stadium, which is where the New York Giants beat the Miami Dolphins last October.

Chargers President Dean Spanos would not confirm San Diego's involvement to the newspaper but said, "We want to go. I'm cautiously optimistic."

Commissioner Roger Goodell is expected to make the announcement official at his Super Bowl media conference on Friday, according to the Union-Tribune.

This will be just the league's second regular-season game played outside North America. The meeting between New York and Miami this past October was the first.

I just hope the Browns never do it in place of a home game.

They just need to take one away game from each teams so that both teams have a total of 8 home games... It'd be the smartest thing to do.

I remember Randy Lerner saying he will not approve of an overseas game.

At least they will at least get a real game next year.

For what its worth, my wife is from England and her immediate family as well as many friends live there. The NFL was a HUGE hit in England. For a country that considers "Futbol" soccer, it did really well there.

When her brother came to visit, he was already educated about the game and watched all the bowl games with me, we also went to the local bar and watched NFL (Browns) games together.

The point is, what the NFL is hoping to gain by playing games in London is working. I would imagine they are going to continue to branch out.

And for those that hope Lerner never has us play a game there. I don't think it will happen in the very near future, but I wouldn't be surprised to see us throw our names out there. If this continues to do well in London, don't forget Randy owns a soccer team out there that has a great fan base. It would make sense for him to have those fans see the Browns play live and gain more of a following there.

Just throwing that out there!!

I'm kinda surprised that the Saints were OK with this. That city is still a mess and one of the institutions that gives the residents there something to forget about their troubles for a little while is Saints football. If I'm not mistaken, the Saints fans sold out last season and will probably do so again in 2008. Seems a shame to take a regular season game away for any NFL city. However, I think you could make an argument that New Orleans will be hurt more than any any other NFL city by this.

They're also taking a game from a team that had 8 home games taken away a few years ago.

Its not England "taking," it's Goodell "sending."

This is Goodell trying to get fans interested overseas. England did not ask for these games, the NFL asked them to host.

I'm with you, I was just saying that it is working. The interest is rising in England, just like it did in Germany with NFL Europe.

I think the 'home' team fans should get a financial break since they have less home games.

Kash, I know who's doing it...it still ticks me off. I still don't understand how playing a game there earns more money than playing it here.

jaybird, a season ticket holder should only pay for 9 games instead of 10.

I totally agree with this. Either that or they have a choice. They can have a ticket to the game available, but ticket holder is responsible for getting there. Or they give you the option of paying less.

I might get bashed, but it would be kind of cool to have the Browns play overseas.

As long as it's an away game, then I'm fine with it...

I am with you on that Kash

Going against popular support here obviously! I would love to have the Dawg Pound at Wembley stadium. My question would be how many of the people on this board watch the Browns on TV either at a bar or at home, instead of live at the stadium? Looking at the chat room and gameday threads whilst the Browns games are being played, I would suggest it's quite a few, and in this case how would it affect you?

It's the UK and not just England. Murrayfield was mentioned as one of the candidates along with Twickenham and Wembley to host the game. For the record New Orleans offered to give the home game up.

There is a strong NFL following here.
