Ben Roethlisberger likes tall guys; Hines Ward no longer likes Ben Roethlisberger

By MJD

Friday, Jan 25, 2008 12:35 pm EST

Ben Roethlisberger recently expressed a desire for the Steelers to acquire a tall receiver, which, at least to me, doesn't sound like an unreasonable request. As it turns out, though, it made Hines Ward so mad that he's vowed to never again taste Big Ben's Beef Jerky.

In Ben's defense, he didn't make the request in any kind of a way that was disparaging to the Steelers current receivers. In fact, he went out of his way to make the point that he liked them:

"I'm always going to ask for a tall receiver," Roethlisberger said in an interview with the Post-Gazette. "That's just me. Our receivers are unbelievable, but our tallest guy might be Hines. Or Santonio [Holmes]. Hines is going to say he's 6 foot, but he's 5-11."

That doesn't sound so inflammatory. But here are some of the things that Hines told the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette in response:

"I don't hear Tom Brady or Peyton Manning asking for that."

"I don't know, whatever he says. I have no idea. To me, it's a rare combination of receivers out there who are good and tall. We won a Super Bowl, we didn't have a tall receiver then. I don't see Tom Brady caring about who's tall or not. He got Randy this year, but he did it before without him.''

"To me, I have enough problems to worry about than what Ben wants -- I can't give him the contract. He wants a tall receiver? Why did we draft Santonio [Holmes]?"

Uh-oh ... someone's got a little man complex. That seems like a gross overreaction to an innocuous statement about a preference for a receiver with some height.

I'll say this for Ben, too: When he did play alongside Plaxico Burress with the Steelers, Plax made a ton of plays for him. Any time Ben got in trouble, he'd scramble, and it seemed like he always ended up looking for Plax downfield. They made a lot of plays that way.

Not that I don't enjoy the public sniping, but I think Hines is just going to have to get over this one. I think it's obvious, judging from the number of times that Rothelisberger throws Ward's way, that Roethlisberger likes him and thinks he's a good receiver.

So Ben likes tall guys ... so what? that doesn't mean you aren't special in your own way, Hines. It's not you, it's Ben. It's about what he's going through right now. At this point in his life, he just wants to be with someone who doesn't have to sit on seven phone books to be able to drive. I'm sure you two can still be friends.

1) Whats up with this admanager?

2) Hines Ward and Ben will be just fine.. Ward may be a little bitter from now on, but when out there on the field, they will do what they do best, and that is try to win games. N

Now lets hope they DON'T get a tall WR.. lol..

I was talking about this with a Steelers fan at my sons basketball game Friday night.. LOL

It's draft time, it's FA time... it's wishlist time. Ben's wish is for a 6'5" WR to bail him out from time to time or to throw the lob in the endzone... big deal. I'm sure most players in the NFL right now are hoping the draft/FA will bring them an upgrade in the positions they rely on the most to do their own job.

I hope the first time in preseason that Ben throws one a little high, Ward doesn't jump for it and comes back to the huddle and says, "You know, if I was just a bit taller, I could have made a play on that."

The media is something else. Now they are gonna create a war between Roethlisberger and Hines Ward. BR didn't say anything wrong, Hines knows better than to let media parasites get to him like that. This is stupid.
However, considering this info, and other info, it is easy to see that Pittsburgh will finish last in the division next year.

Or better yet Ward can come back to the huddle and say "Even Shaq couldn't have got up high enougi for that one"

That prediction should work out as well as this prediction you made back in November...

Quote:

This year we will win the division because we are the best team in the division. We will play a wildcard team in the first round of the playoffs, perhaps Pittsburgh, or Tennessee, we will win the Wild Card game, and then lose to either Indy, or New England in the divisional round.

Actually he potentially was wrong by all of a 1/2 game.

If by that you mean laughing hysterically at his predictions that are based in fantasy rather than reality, then you are correct sir.

Uhhh, uhhh, dur huh, dur huh, can you name one prediction in the history of the Earth that is based in reality, and not fantasy? Dur huh, dur huh, that's why they are called predictions, not reality. Dur huh, dur huh.

Arch is right, you get very, very, defensive. It's very easy to push your buttons. Stop being so predictable.

Yes, making football predictions are usually supposed to be based in reality. Otherwise, you end up looking like an idiot (which you did)

Now, me and Muni don't exactly see eye to eye, but he missed his prediction by half a game. Tell me exactly how that makes him look like an idiot. Basically, if you've ever picked a division winner, that didn't win the division (and missed by half a game), then you are an idiot? I'm prety sure every person who has ever made football predictions is an idiot then.

I, for one, had New Orleans winning the NFC South... I must be a moron.

Bro, she got burnt with her little "reality/fantasy" comment. Because she knows she got burnt, she's desperately resorted to name calling. I love the name calling, it lets me know how frustrated I have made her.

Saying that the Browns would beat out the Steelers in the division this past year was idiotic. Spin it any way you want, but it is what it is. That coupled with the fact that he has repeatedly insisted that the Browns old championships are far better than the Steelers Super Bowl titles, PLUS believing in his warped mind that the Browns actually own the Steelers, show what a homer he is when it comes to the Browns. I'll gladly show you the link for those posts as well.

No, that's not moronic...you're basing that on their performance from the prior year. Everyone expected them to do well this year.

See the difference?

Right. I didn't even see you respond to that post at all...and yet I "got burnt"?

Keep on dreaming little man...I can't wait to see more of your predictions based in your fantasy world.

Here's mine - the Raiders will go 19-0 and win the Super Bowl next year! Woooo weee! You're right this is fun!

Wow! You are so bent out of shape right now. LOLOLOLOL I love it.

Christy, stop getting so emotional about all of this. It's a message board, on top of that, it's a smack shack. Unless we're discussing politics, religion, or life/death, there is no reason to not have fun. Chill Out.

BTW, you, dear, have repeatedly noted the Steelers 4 Super Bowl championships on this board, in response to that claim, I have pointed out the 4 Browns NFL Championships, and the other Browns AAFC Championships. I have never, never, said that the Browns "owned" the Steelers. -Show me the link.

My posts have merely pointed out that throughout the history of both franchises, the Browns have been more succesful. The Browns left in 1996, and the Steelers have had the luxury of going against an expansion franchise over the last several years. Evidenced by 4 Pro Bowlers this season, the Browns are starting to come out of their expansion shell, and will again be on top of the AFC North, and the Steelers will be below them- just like they should be.

If you can't tell the difference between "getting bent of of shape" and having someone ridicule you for your inane babblings about the Steelers, then you are far worse off than I thought you are.

Like your own fellow Browns fans have told you on this board....until your team can beat the Steelers, you can't talk smack (although I realize that you'll try unsuccessfully anyways - in which case I will continue to LMAO at you).

Dur huh, dur huh.

Predicting the Browns to win the division this November was not far-fetched at all. A couple people have told you already that I was a 1/2 game off -proof that my prediction wasn't far fetched. I'm not going to insult you back because I can tell that your getting more fired up about this than I think you should. It's a smack shack, have fun.

AH,..stooler lunacy,....gotta love it!!

Saying the Browns would beat out the stoolers for the division was far from idiotic,...it was damn near a reality. By years end MOST people felt the Browns were a better team anyway. The Browns WILL go into next season ranked higher than the reeling stoolers and favorites to win the division.

If they go back to calling the SB the NFL Championship does that mean the SB's of the past have a greater significance than the NEW name? In the mind of a stooler and ONLY a stooler the answer would be yes.

Move over,...the Browns are going back to division domination.

-My point exactly, fans from most teams have no problem acknowledging the Browns championships, but, for some reason, Steelers fans have an issue with it.

As a relatively new face here at the boards, I just want to throw out an amusing thought I've picked up on. It seems the smack thrown your way of late has had your unmentionables as the common link between them. I think it serves dual purpose.

First, it provides classic smack to throw at a Steeler fan, but secondly, I'm willing to bet there's a lot of posters on here who have a little bit of a thing for you. Ya know, the whole "the one you love to hate" kind of deal.

It seems the people who are amused at you getting upset are the ones you probably have wrapped around your finger.

Anyway, back to debating whether a prediction can be idiotic or realistic or fantasy or who knows what else....

Shep han't replied.

Now I love that Christy is here. She is a lot of fun and doesn't take this stuff (or herself) seriously. For Muni to think he can actually upset her is quite funny.

P i agree with ya.

I always get a kick out of reading what Christy has to say. I mean, if its serious, its almost always insightful and usually pretty close to right on. If not, its good jokes.

I feel like Muni, you might be more in a bunch than Christy is

There are only 2 things that would ruffle my feathers.

1. If one of our players got into a motorcycle accident again (or any other life threatening accident).

2. If the Browns beat the Steelers.

Everything else is around here is pure entertainment.
