I recently downloaded the newest iTunes version. I have over 16,000 songs in iTunes, located on an external HD.
I opened iTunes today to sync my iPod (I rarely open iTunes - matter of fact, its been maybe 5 months since I last had it open), and every file I have has lost its link. I get the dreaded exclamation point.
When I click on a song, I get this warning:
"The song ------ could not be used because the original file could not be found. Would you like to locate it?"
I also have about 30 playlists each containing 100 or more songs - there is a lot of time spent in organizing these.
Apple support told me to unhook my external, delete my entire library, then hook my external back up and go to file, then add folder to library. I lose all of my playlists, etc though.
Here's my question (and I'm not sure how to do this, but heard you can): Can you bring up a calendar and select a date in the past to make your PC think it is from that day and time. For instance, if my iTunes was working on Nov. 25th of last year, can I select that day as the day my computer will think it is, essentially giving me an earlier version of iTunes and having the song addresses in tact?
Please help.....I am so fed up with itunes.

I don't know much at all about iTunes, but I can pretty much guarantee that this won't work.

That's why I never liked the iPod, I prefer just a basic .mp3 player, that way I don't deal with this stuff.
I wish I could help, but my couple of interactions with iTunes has pretty much had the same result, never worked right.
We don't have to agree with each other, to respect each others opinion.

You could activate a system restore point through XP, but like Purp said, I don't think it will work.
I hate ITunes. I wish I could load and unload my Ipod without it.

I've already had to rebuild my library 3 times. And I do nothing else on this computer anymore. Before was just for internet and email. With this many songs and each artist in an individual folder, its a pain in the arse to import - can't do one major import - have to go folder to folder. Then have to build up playlists, etc. I seriously must have over 100 hours invested in those. What a waste.

You can restore your computer to a date. When you turn you rcomputer on start pressing F8, press it over and over until you get a screen with a menu. On that menu there some options, I have used the option for "last known good configuration" and it work real well after a crash of some kind. I know there is an option for restoring to a date, but I have never used it. I have heard of people using it though and it worked for them. I don't know how far back you can go, they ugy I know used it and it worked, went back a week and it solved a lot of his issues.
I don't know a lot about Itunes though....So I can't promise that it will restore the locations for all those songs....Sorry.

Just curious Chicago did they tell you you'd lose the play lists? I don't do play lists but when this happened to me I did what they told you to do and it came back to where it was including the play counts. I hope someone who knows what they're doing can give you an answer because I'd like to know too. I'd guess there is a way to do this.

I haven't yet, but I may bring my question over to the iTunes boards - just too busy now. I'll get it there tonight and, once I get responses, link it here so you can see what they are (or copy and paste them over here...).

general reply....
i don't really like itunes...i use it cause once i loaded my nano i haven't had to change it....but i came across a free program called mediamonkey....got it from download.com its a free program and does support ipod and zune....also is sweet for editing tags and fixing filenames....
itunes didn't like when i opened it after, so your mileage may vary....i had to restore it...to use i tunes again...but i believe if you just scrap itunes and use the other all the time it would work fine....does playlists too...

Thanks guys. Here's one reply I got on the Apple boards:
If using Win XP, remap the drive letter to match the drive letter in iTunes.
Find location mapped in iTunes: Select a song, right click and select "Get Info" the lower part should display "Where: G:\..." where G is the drive letter of the external HD.
Remap Drive Letter: Start -> Control Panel -> Performance & Maintenance -> Administrative Tools -> Computer Management -> Disk Management
Select the external hard drive letter, right click then select "Change Drive Letter and Paths" -> Click on "Change..." Select the drive letter that matches iTunes and click "OK"
This has worked for me with may laptop.
----------------------------------------------------------------
I just responded with this:
However, there are 15,000 individual song files located in maybe 1000 folders within the My Music folder in Windows XP (on my laptop as well) thru my external HD. The filepath for each song in itunes has to be directed to the individual song file (not the folder).
Wouldn't I essentially have to go one by one for every song?

Do you use it? How do you like it?
Will it completely replace I-Tunes without any issues?

Anapod Explorer, our flagship iPod product, is composed of Anapod Explorer itself, Anapod CopyGear, and Anapod PhotoSync. Anapod is the most advanced Windows iPod software available, offering iPod management through full Windows Explorer integration under My Computer, easy drag and drop iPod copy, iPod transfer and iPod backup, PDA function support, photo and video transfer, web page interface access to your iPod through a built-in web server, powerful search and reporting capabilities using a built-in SQL database, and much more, all in one compact package. A great backup tool or iTunes alternative.
Taken from the developers website. Worked great for me with my earlier IPOD. Haven't used it with my new classic though, although I'm told by my sources it will work. I really like the feature where u can take everything back off the ipod, could even help the user who started this thread.
