QB Couch still is hero to Lorenzen
Thursday, January 31, 2008
By Steve Doerschuk
Repository sports writer

GLENDALE, ARIZ. The only former No. 1 overall draft pick who will play Sunday is Eli Manning.

Tim Couch made it to Super Bowl XLII in spirit, anyway.

Couch, Cleveland's ill-fated No. 1 overall pick of the 1999 draft, was Jared Lorenzen's hero.

Lorenzen is a backup Giants quarterback.

That's a story. Couch, one of the most storied players in Kentucky Wildcats history, is out of football. Lorenzen, once known as the fat guy who followed Couch, is in a Super Bowl.

"It's funny the way stuff works out,'' Lorenzen said. "Tim really opened up the whole offense for me. He taught me how to be a quarterback in the SEC."

Lorenzen didn't start at Kentucky until 2000, but he leaned heavily on Couch in the latter's final college season, 1998.

"Tim is still a legend," Lorenzen said. "He's still somebody I really look up to. He can flat-out play."

Yes, Lorenzen put that in the present tense, even though Couch last took an NFL snap on Dec. 29, 2003, at Cincinnati.

Ironically, Lorenzen's position coach, Chris Palmer, was Couch's head coach his first two years in Cleveland.

"Chris is awesome," Lorenzen said. "He has a different way of teaching that is effective. He keeps the mood light."

Lorenzen, who has matured and slimmed down, is good-natured about his former weight problem.

Asked what his current weigh-in is compared to his college days, he smiled and said, "Less."

Lorenzen has a rocket arm and good mobility — he could move even when his belly hung over his pants.

"Obviously, I want to start somewhere, some day in this league," he said. "I'm still young."

He's 26, four years younger than Couch.

Say what you want about TCs time here in Cleveland,, but in Kentucky,, the kid is still thought of as a sports hero,,,

Say the name of Tim Couch in Lexington Ky sometime and just watch how everyones eyes light up...

I swear to you,, not that I understand it, but it's like saying Bernie Kosars name around here.....

Couch could flat out play, just not on an expansion team with no o-line, running game, playmakers, or a defense.

Put Tim Couch in Cullpeppers shoes, and vice versa and Tim Couch would still be in the league and Cullpepper would be three time more banged up then he is now.

Cullpepper had 3 WRs (Carter, Moss and Reed) at the same time that was better then any target Couch had to throw to. He had an o-line (Stringer, Steussie, Birk) and he had a running game (Robert Smith). He also played on a team with a better defense and alot more continuity then an expansion team. What has Cullpepper done when those guys were no longer in a Vikings uniform? Nothing on the field anyways, just a little fun time on a sex boat.

Couch had some decent games. Especially when you consider that his top targets (Morgan, Davis and KJ) are 3rd and 4th WRS on the depth chart or punt returners on other teams.

Agreed ... Couch was pretty good his first few seasons seasons, breaking most Browns rookie passing records. But a poor O-line slowly turned him into a guy who made panicked pass reads, had bad throwing mechanics, and constantly feared for his life. I basically call this "Tim Couch disease" now. David Carr has it, Charlie Frye has it ... and once you get it, it's pretty much incurable.

Well, I'm not going to get into a Deadbeat about what could of, or should of happened,,,

But there is ample reason to believe he'd have been more successful had he been with an established team rather than an expansion team. But couldn't that very same thing be said for any player in any postion....

Well yes and no. The player has to have enough talent to get by in the first place. You couldn't put me as QB of the Patriots offense, and expect me to throw up good numbers.

One of the key things any football coach tells you is to do "your job" and not to worry about anyone elses job. If everyone focuses on their job and does it, the whole team succeeds. When you have guys that are obviously undertalented taking up spots as starters, then the guys next to them can't trust them, and suddenly those guys are trying to do too much. In the meantime, they are developing bad habits that stay with them, and are hard to break. And yes, you can say that about almost every position.

Let me "help you" to understand.

Does Kentucky have an NFL team? No.
Does Kentucky have an NBA team? No.
Does Kentucky have a MLB team? No.

So you see, U.K. is EVERYTHING in Kentucky!!

They're the Cavs, Indians AND Browns of Kentucky all rolled into one. They very much live and breathe U.K. just like we do the Browns.

U.K.

Yeah, I suppose that's as good an explaination as you will ever see.. With nothing else to cheer for but U of K and the Kentucky Derby,,, it only stands to reason that Tim would be a hero....

I don't know about "running in dirt, but he drew up some game winning plays at U.K. in the dirt.

If the guy could flat out play, he would still be in the league.

He sucked and only stuck around as long as he did because he was the first overall draft choice in '99.

I don't care what anybody says about Tim Couch.....dude came and gave his all to the city of Cleveland and the fans!!!!!!!! No O-Line, no running back, marginal WR's at best...dude did the best he could with what he had to work with. Loved his heart and passion, despite being on a horrible team!!!! Dude LOVED the fans of Cleveland and much to the chagrin of the Cleveland media, wore that passion and emotion on his sleeve. I have to admit I felt for TC when he broke down in the locker room pouring out his emotions.....may not be the "MANLY" thing to do...but showed me his heart and passion for the fans of Cleveland and wanting so badly to bring the Browns back into the spotlight in the NFL.........
I believe we have a good core of players now that feel the fans passion and love of Cleveland Browns Football.......
Go Browns!!!!!!!

LOL................like when he flipped the fans off or when he said he preferred playing on the road instead of in Cleveland?

Only time I can think of was a game IN Baltimore. If that's the case, he was flipping off Baltimore fans, not Cleveland fans, and that it perfectly acceptable to me!

If there was another time, I cannot recall it off hand.

I remember him waving bye to the Baltimore fans, and I remember him getting into a shouting match with some fans after a loss to San Diego at home in 2003. Believe me, I'd love to bash the guy but I've never heard of or seen Couch flipping the bird to fans

I knew he made some type of gesture to the fans in Baltimore. But thinking longer about it, you're right, he waved to them. I know it was right after we either scored the winning score or had just won the game (can't totally remember). I just got my gestures wrong. OOPS!

Actually, the only player (since 99) that I can actually remember flipping anyone off is Chris Gardocki flipping off the Steelers.

Have to disagree w/you. And I do it w/confidence. Seeing as how I saw it w/my own eyes.

He flipped the fans off in the very game where they cheered when he was injured. I believe it was either the series before he was injured or two series earlier. He also flipped the fans off as he was running off the field at halftime in another game.

And I am certain that one can find the quotes where he said he preferred playing on the road and that he would treat home games as road games.

My point...........the guy did not "give his heart to Cleveland." He was a stiff as a player and wasn't even respected by his teammates, although he had many fans who adored him.

Tim Couch...still the only QB to lead the Browns to the playoffs (2002) since the teams return in 99.

We Browns fans are still waiting for the next QB to do what Couch did...lead the Browns to the big dance and a shot at a Super Bowl.

Regardless of what some may think of Tim Couch, you can't take away what he did for the Browns in 2002.

Not trying to rewrite history as William Green did his job as RB, as did Kelly Holcomb as the backup QB, as did Tim Couch as the starting QB, as did Butch Davis as the Browns headcoach of 2002 Browns...as did the entire team.

The results of the 2002 season was the work of the entire 2002 Browns team.

As much as some would like, you can't take away from the 2002 team, that they are the only Browns team to reach the playoffs since the team's return in 1999.

Funny you mention Butch Davis...Butch is now the head coach at NC. Butch's NC bio sites the following...

..."Cleveland finished the season with a 7-3 mark over its final 10 games, including victories in four of its final six outings, the best record over the final six games of the season for the franchise since 1988"....

web page

The starting QB who lead offense in those last 10 games...Tim Couch.

Tim Couch is no hero, IMO, but if Butch Davis can site the 2002 Browns as his high water mark as a NFL head coach, Couch should get his just due as the Browns starter of that same team.

Prove it

Couch got put in Brett Favre's shoes......and couldn't get the ball 10 yards downfield because of his bad wing, a wing that was ALWAYS sore and troublesome, long before his third year in the league.

He's not out of the league because he couldn't play. He's out of the league because his arm simply wore out. It was always sore in camp and needed tons of wraps and rest. That eventually caught up with him, and no amount of surgery or steroids could heal it. He didn't take huge hits that broke his elbow or seperated his shoulder on multiple occasions. Eventually, any pitcher or QB loses their ability to throw the ball because of nothing more than wear-and-tear. Some pitchers like Nolan Ryan can keep it going into their 40's. Others like Kerry Wood can't make it to 30. Couch's bad wing was a huge red flag for me in college, and proved his undoing as a pro.

Then there's the debate regarding whether or not he had enough game to be a bonifide starter in this league, to which I say he never showed enough in various categories to lead me to believe he could. That's a different story.

As far as being a hero in 'Tucky, he was, and deserved to be, though filing that BS grevience against the Packers was classless, and his story of HGH and/or steroids tarnished his rep.

What I find most comical has nothing to do with Couch himself, but how Stevie Dorkskunk couldn't find any other story to write about

Oh come on Toad,,, that is misrepresenting the facts there my friend....

True that Couch didn't have a "brett favre" type arm even on his best day, but to critique a guy because he's injured is just about crazy....

Also, his arm wasn't ALWAYS sore and TROUBLESOME until he came to Cleveland and got sacked a million times in just a few short years..

So your comment kinda incorrect Toad.....
