ESPN DENVER -- Denver Broncos cornerback Darrent Williams was shot and killed in a drive-by shooting in downtown Denver early Monday morning, police said. Team spokesman Jim Saccomano said police called him about 3 a.m. Mountain Time from the scene of the shooting and told him three people had been shot and that Williams had been killed. Saccomano said he spoke with coach Mike Shanahan and others in the organization. "Complete shock. We're speechless. It takes words away. A terrible tragedy," Saccomano said. Hours before the shooting, the Broncos lost to San Francisco 26-23 in overtime, eliminating them from the playoff race. a little more info: web page DENVER, Colorado (AP) -- Denver Broncos cornerback Darrent Williams was shot and killed in a drive-by shooting in downtown Denver early Monday morning. Team spokesman Jim Saccomano said police called him about 3 a.m. from the scene of the shooting and told him three people had been shot and that Williams, 24, had been killed. A little after 2 a.m., a white Hummer limousine was sprayed with bullets from a vehicle that pulled along side, said Sonny Jackson, spokesperson for the Denver Police Department. Three people in the limousine were hit and were taken to hospitals, where one man was pronounced dead, Jackson said. The other man and woman who were shot were not identified. Jackson said police were searching for the attackers and interviewing witnesses. "We have no motive yet," Jackson said. "We're hoping to talk with witnesses to find out where they were coming from, and that might give us some clues." Saccomano said he spoke with coach Mike Shanahan and others in the organization. "Complete shock. We're speechless. It takes words away. A terrible tragedy," Saccomano said. Hours before the shooting, the Broncos lost to San Francisco 26-23 in overtime, eliminating them from the playoff race. Williams finished the season with 88 tackles, 78 of them solo, and four interceptions. On Sunday against the 49ers, he had three tackles and returned two punts for 50 yards before leaving the game with a shoulder injury late in the second half. Williams, a second-round draft pick out of Oklahoma State in 2005, made an immediate impact on the Broncos, starting nine times in his rookie season following a stellar career at Oklahoma State, where he totaled 11 interceptions and scored three touchdowns on punt returns. Players and coaches are off Monday. They were scheduled to meet Tuesday before heading home for the offseason.

http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=2716385Williams killed when limo sprayed with bullets Associated Press DENVER -- Denver Broncos cornerback Darrent Williams was shot and killed in a drive-by shooting early Monday, his limousine sprayed with bullets in downtown Denver. Darrent Williams: 1982-2007 WilliamsMike Evans of KKFN Radio in Denver, who used to host a radio show with Williams, tells who the Broncos starting right cornerback was as a person: "What a bright, young, engaging young guy that was just a lot of fun to talk to. He loved talking about football. He loved playing football. [He was] just an utter joy to work with." To listen, click here. Team spokesman Jim Saccomano said police called him about 3 a.m. from the scene and told him three people had been shot, and the 24-year-old Williams had been killed. The killing came hours after the Broncos were eliminated from the playoff race. A little after 2 a.m., a white Hummer limousine was fired on from a vehicle that pulled up along its side, police spokesman Sonny Jackson said. There were at least eight bullet holes in the limo. Three people in the limo were hit and were taken to hospitals, where one man was pronounced dead, Jackson said. The other man and woman who were shot were not identified. Jackson said police were searching for suspects and interviewing witnesses. "We have no motive yet," Jackson said. "We're hoping to talk with witnesses to find out where they were coming from, and that might give us some clues." Saccomano said he spoke with coach Mike Shanahan and others in the organization. Hours earlier, the Broncos lost to San Francisco 26-23 in overtime. "Complete shock. We're speechless. It takes words away. A terrible tragedy," Saccomano said. Pro Bowl player Champ Bailey was among the players and team staff members who gathered at Denver Health Medical Center, where Williams' body was taken. Williams teamed with Bailey to give Denver one of the top cornerback tandems in the NFL. Williams finished the season with 88 tackles, 78 of them solo, and four interceptions. Players and coaches are off Monday. They were scheduled to meet Tuesday before heading home for the offseason. On Sunday against the 49ers, Williams had three tackles and returned two punts for 50 yards before leaving the game with a shoulder injury late in the second half. After the game he said he was planning to wait a few weeks before determining if he needed an operation. In December, Williams spoke of his desire to return to his hometown of Fort Worth, Texas, this offseason to talk to kids about staying out of gangs. Williams, a second-round draft pick out of Oklahoma State in 2005, made an immediate impact on the Broncos. He started nine times in his rookie season following a stellar college career. The white stretch Hummer limousine sat in a snowbank beside Speer Boulevard, a main street through downtown Denver. On the driver's side, at least three bullet holes were visible near the front, and four more near the back. Police and evidence technicians worked amid snow and ice from recent storms, using small tent-like yellow plastic markers to indicate possible pieces of evidence.

This is just too sad. Why do professional athletes insist on hanging out in bars 'til the wee hours of the morning? So many of them feel the need to illegally carry firearms, so they know there's potential trouble.
Don't they make enough money to have their own private parties if they want to have a good time? I'm sick and tired of reading about these athlete/bar involved arrests and shootings after 2am.

From Denvers webpage:
By Andrew Mason DenverBroncos.com
ENGLEWOOD, Colo. -- Tragedy struck the Broncos and the National Football League on Monday morning when cornerback Darrent Williams was shot and killed in the overnight hours of New Year's morning.
He was 24 years old.
"All of us are devastated by this tragedy," President/CEO Pat Bowlen said in a statement. "To lose a young player, and more important, a great young man such as Darrent Williams, is incomprehensible. To lose him in such a senseless manner as this is beyond words.
"My deepest feelings, all my thoughts and prayers, go out to Darrent's mother and family. The entire Broncos' organization shares my grief. Darrent was a wonderful young man, and his passing is a great loss for his family, the Broncos and the city."
Added Head Coach Mike Shanahan: "Losing a fine young man such as Darrent Williams leaves me speechless with sadness. We all know that Darrent was an excellent player, but as a person, he was a first class young man who brightened every room with his smile, attitude and personality. I cannot express how heartsick I feel at this loss. All of our players and coaches are completely shocked by this terrible tragedy, and my deepest condolences go out to the entire Williams family."
Williams was just hours removed from playing extensively during the Broncos' season-ending 26-23 overtime loss to the San Francisco 49ers, a game in which he logged three tackles and returned a pair of punts for 50 yards, including a 34-yarder that was his longest of the season.
The Oklahoma State product joined the Broncos as a second-round draft pick in 2005 and immediately made an impact upon the team, rising to the first team before the campaign was halfway complete. He finished his first year as a first-team All-Rookie selection by Pro Football Weekly and the Pro Football Writers Association, logging 58 total tackles, intercepting two passes -- one of which he returned for a touchdown at Oakland -- and adding a sack.
It was a splendid first year for Williams -- especially considering he went into the season expecting the vast majority of his work to be on special teams.
"I really don't plan on playing a lot at corner but I plan on contributing on special teams and returning kicks," Williams said during the team's 2005 organized team activities. "This year that will be my place to shine."
Williams, however, made at least as much impact with his demeanor around Broncos headquarters as he did by his play on the field, brandishing one of the most ebullient personalities to hit the team's locker room in many years.
"(Darrent) lived his life to the fullest," his mother, Rosalind Williams, told the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. He had a big heart and helped many people," Rosalind Williams said. "He's going to be sorely missed by his family and friends and he has a big family. I don't mean just blood relatives. It is such an extended family because there's so many people that loved him."
Many of them were in the Broncos' locker room.
BEFORE DENVER
Williams was born in Fort Worth, Texas on Oct. 24, 1982, and was raisde there, eventually matriculating at O.D. Wyatt High School, where his life in football first began to flourish a decade ago. He commenced his on-field time there by playing running back before making a switch to cornerback -- a shift that would eventually lead him to the NFL.
In his senior season during the autumn of 2000, Williams was named the 7-4A Most Valuable Player after a year that saw him intercept five passes and average 30 yards per punt return. Oklahoma State took notice, offering him a scholarship.
It took Williams scant time to make his impact in Stillwater. He would start four of OSU's last six games as a true freshman, logging 33 tackles, two passes defensed and a pair of interceptions -- both of which he returned for touchdowns in a win over Baylor.
As a sophomore, Williams became a full-time starter, notching 53 tackles, intercepting three passes and breaking up 13 more. But just as the move to cornerback would affect his future, so too would OSU's decision to move him to punt returns as a junior.
Williams excelled on punt returns in his last two years at OSU, averaging 17.9 yards on 13 returns as a junior and 27.7 on nine runbacks during an injury-marred senior season in which he was limited to seven games. It would be his junior year that was his finest, as he notched 66 tackles, broke up 17 passes, logged six interceptions and scored four times -- twice on punt returns and twice more on punt returns.
"He was the greatest player I have coached in my 20 years," said Joe DeForest, Williams' position coach at OSU. "He wanted to prove to the world that he could play. He had a chip on his shoulder and I mean that in a good way. He wanted to prove himself, and that's the way he approached every game. It was what made him a great player."
And it was Williams' big-play ability that compelled Denver to make him its first pick in its 2006 draft class at the No. 56 slot.
"His ability to return punts as well as kickoffs was the factor that brought him to the forefront of our list," General Manager Ted Sundquist said at the time. "He's also been a really dynamic guy with the ball in his hands after turnovers with regard to interceptions. He's run a number of interceptions back for touchdowns. We got excited about his playmaking ability with the ball in his hands in any manner and the fact that he can do that as a punt returner was the reason we went in that direction."
But then Williams came to Denver, and for two seasons, became even more than even the Broncos hoped he could be.
Our honor defend, we will fight to the end, for OHIO! GO BUCKS!

ANOTHER UPDATE - It's all gang related. http://www.9news.com/news/article.aspx?storyid=62552Quote: KUSA - 9NEWS has learned the vehicle said to be involved in the shooting death of Darrent Williams is registered to a self-professed gang member. Hicks, 27, is currently in jail on attempted murder charges. The key witness, Lonnie Clark, in the case against Hicks was gunned down outside of her house December 6, days before she was to testify against him. The murder of Clark is still under investigation, Hicks was in jail on December 6. Hicks, a self confessed gang member, had previously mentioned ties to the Crips gang. Williams was shot and killed early Monday morning while traveling from the Shelter night club where nearly 800 people had gathered to celebrate Kenyon Martin?s birthday. A person with Williams at the nightclub New Year?s Eve was said to be dressed all in red, which is a color commonly associated with the Bloods gang. Sources tell 9NEWS that while at the nightclub, the person was in an altercation with other club goers dressed all in blue, a color commonly associated with the Crips gang. This has led police to believe the attack on the limousine could have been gang related. Police say the manner in which the bullets were sprayed were typical of an intentional act to hurt someone, as they were shot at roughly at head level. Police combed Hicks? neighborhood throughout Tuesday night in search of the 1998 white Chevy Tahoe. They issued the All Points Bulletin for the vehicle?s license plate 665 OBS Wednesday morning. New developments in the case came just as teammates, family members and friends were to gather for a private memorial service in honor of Williams.

Police locate SUV possibly connected to Williams' slaying Police locate SUV possibly connected to Williams' slaying By ARNIE STAPLETON, AP Sports Writer January 4, 2007
AP - Jan 4, 10:52 am EST More Photos
DENVER (AP) -- Police impounded a 1998 Chevrolet Tahoe early Thursday they believe might have been used in a New Year's Day drive-by shooting that killed Denver Broncos cornerback Darrent Williams.
Passers-by spotted the vehicle parked south of Denver International Airport and called police anonymously at about 6:30 a.m., police spokesman Sonny Jackson said.
"The community once again came through for us," he said.
Jackson said the vehicle had a license plate that matched the one investigators sought. Television images showed the SUV had no rear plate, but the front plate still was attached.
TV shots also appeared to show the vehicle had been spray-painted black on the sides, front and back, but the top remained white -- the original color of the vehicle authorities were seeking. "It appears there was an attempt to disguise," Jackson said.
State confidentiality laws prevent police from saying whom a vehicle is registered to. However, the Rocky Mountain News and The Denver Post, citing sources they didn't name, reported the SUV belongs to Brian K. Hicks of Denver, who is jailed on drug and attempted murder charges.
Jackson declined to say whether a tipster or a witness led police to focus on the truck.
The vehicle was placed onto a flatbed tow truck and hauled away. Jackson said crime lab investigators would inspect the SUV, but he declined to discuss specifics of what they would look for or what tests they might conduct.
The Tahoe was found on a street amid snow-covered empty lots and industrial buildings under construction. A housing subdivision stood in the distance. Traffic sped by on a nearby thoroughfare.
Elisa Hall, who lives within view of the site where the Tahoe was found, said she hadn't noticed when the SUV was dropped off or impounded.
"It's scary," she said. "You think you're safe. I think this is in the middle of nowhere. This is far from Denver."
Although Hicks was behind bars on the day of the shooting, police want to know who was using his vehicle in the early morning hours of New Year's Day, when a gunman sprayed a white stretch Hummer limousine with at least 14 bullets, one of which struck Williams in the neck.
Hicks, 28, has been jailed since Nov. 9 on a charge of possessing drugs with intent to distribute. He also is accused of shooting at a woman who was later killed a week before she was to testify against him last month.
Hicks' wife, Kimaya James, told the Rocky Mountain News that police were looking for her husband's vehicle but that she didn't know who had been driving the Tahoe while he's been in the Denver County Jail.
Investigators have not identified any suspects in the attack on Williams that wounded two other people.
Police also aren't saying whether they know the motive for the slaying but have said there was a disturbance at a nightclub where Williams attended a New Year's Eve party shortly before he was killed. Investigators also are reviewing surveillance video from the club and footage from traffic cameras.
Williams' uncle, Demond Williams, said the cornerback was at the club to promote a rap group for his fledgling independent recording label, Ryno Entertainment.
The gathering at the club in downtown Denver also was billed as a birthday party for Denver Nuggets star Kenyon Martin, who has said he and other Nuggets left the club before any trouble arose.
Williams' teammates and coaches, along with owner Pat Bowlen and other team personnel gathered with Williams' relatives at the team's training complex on Wednesday for a private memorial.
Also in attendance was former teammate Trevor Pryce, who plays for the Baltimore Ravens.
Some of the players wore sweats, others jeans and others suits as they solemnly filed into the building.
"I would like to thank you all for the love and support that our family has received during this sad time," Williams' mother, Rosalind Williams, said in a statement afterward before flying back to Texas.
"Dee lived his life to the fullest. ... I know from all of the public outpouring of sympathy, my son in his short time on this earth touched many lives."
The Broncos will charter a flight to Fort Worth, Williams' hometown, where the funeral will be held at Great Commission Baptist Church this weekend. It will be open to the public.
"I think it will be very special for our football team to be there as a group and to not only support Darrent's memory but his mom, and we're going to have everybody in the organization go," Broncos coach Mike Shanahan said. "It is something we have to do as a family."
Although only 5-foot-8, Williams was full of confidence. He had 88 tackles and four interceptions in 2006 and returned two punts for 50 yards in his final game hours before his death, a 26-23 loss to San Francisco that eliminated the Broncos from playoff contention.
Williams had a 7-year-old son and 4-year-old daughter who live in Fort Worth. A memorial fund was set up in their honor, and Nuggets star Carmelo Anthony said he wanted to honor his friend, possibly by setting up a college fund for Williams' children.
Anthony said he was with Williams at the nightclub in the hours before he was slain.
In 2003, Pittsburgh Steelers linebacker Joey Porter was shot outside a Denver sports bar, and last April, Nuggets guard Julius Hodge was shot while driving on Interstate 76 in Denver. Both shootings occurred after disturbances at nightclubs and neither case has been solved.
Hodge, who played Tuesday night for the first time since he was shot five times April 8, said Williams' killing brought back nightmares of the night he was attacked.
"I pray every night for him and his family and friends," Hodge said. "They haven't found who shot me and I've pretty much let it go, but I pray that they find whoever shot him."
