Prosecutor: Bodden thought he was above the law
Posted by Leila Atassi February 04, 2008 18:22PM

A prosecutor on Monday described Browns cornerback Leigh Bodden as an ornery sports celebrity, who acted as if he were above the law.

As Bodden's trial began in Cleveland Municipal Court, the prosecutor said the defendant cussed at police, drove backwards on a one-way street and defied "No Parking" signs at Cleveland Hopkins International Airport in September.

Bodden, 26, was charged with failure to comply with a police order, disorderly conduct and resisting arrest.

His lawyers painted a different picture of Bodden -- a young black man who was treated like a drug dealer because he was well-dressed and drove a nice car.

"Leigh Bodden is not an arrogant, vulgar lunatic," his lawyer, Angelo Lonardo said in his opening statements to the jury. "You'll learn that Leigh's whole life history is one of a respectful, humble, hardworking young man."

On Sept. 6, Bodden went to the airport to pick up his girlfriend and two children. According to police reports, an officer saw him driving in reverse in a one-way arrivals area and told him to stop. Bodden complied after being asked twice and then parked in a restricted area. He started to walk into the terminal, then argued with the officer and was arrested.

If convicted, Bodden could face suspension or fines from the NFL, based on the league's beefed-up personal-conduct policy.

The eight-member jury saw a surveillance video Monday that showed Bodden's 2004 GMC Yukon backing up to parallel park in a "No Parking" zone.

They also heard testimony from one witness, who said she was standing on the curb when Bodden drove in reverse. She testified that she did not know that he is a football player, but that his belligerence with police made her suspicious that he might have been a terrorist.

The trial continues today in Judge Anita Laster Mays' courtroom.

Bodden is a terrorist.

One of my professors in Pharmacy School is having border trouble. He lives and works in Canada, and apparently he is having Visa issues. Homeland security has determined he may be a terrorist.

He's this pale, skinny, nerdy guy in his late 20s. It doesn't make sense.

As stupid and disorderly as Bodden may have been, I think this may be a little too much...

Equating a ST back on the basis of being a good football player to a terrorist that bombs, kills and maims innocent people is reprehensible. Not to mention dressing that statement up with a winkie tells me where you're at.

Classy Christy, very classy. The source is pretty ugly.

I'm sure you're joking and I'm just in a sensitive mood today, but that just struck me as downright offensive.

People might be dumb and those security cops frustrate the crap out of me - it seems they are only directing traffic for the taxi's and busses to be able to park!

However, you have to be a bit more careful at an airport. And that was dumb of him.

so she suspectED that he may have been a terrorist, because of his behavior at the time.

Im not sure she currently thinks he is a terrorist.

As I said before, if I saw somebody driving backwards, the wrong way, in front of an airport terminal and then defying the police, the thought of a terrorist might cross my mind as well.. not a very good one, but a terrorist none-the-less.

I would probably just thinks it's a person trying to pick up a friend or family member. The people working the arrivals line are jerks! You have .3 seconds to wait by the door they will be walking out of before some dude starts yelling at you to move. And as soon as you see your people, you get even less time to load the car. It's more stressful than flying.

They're jerks because they spend all day dealing with people like you who think the rules don't apply to you and that you should get to sit there all day because you're special. I mean forget that a couple hundred thousand people pass through a busy airport on any given day... No, YOU want to sit and wait for your friends.

Yea, if Punch saw some guy backing down an on ramp at the interstate, he'd call him all kinds of names... but do it at the airport and it's ok because the traffic folks are jerks....

Well, maybe you're right about the on-ramp situation....but I wouldn't think the person driving was a terroist either. I would think he took a wrong turn and was acting stupid and careless to correct his mistake.

And I never said I expect to sit in front of the doors for 1 hour holding up the traffic for my friends or family. I'm not that much of a jerk. They give you .3 seconds to see your party, load them and get back into the line for the exit. And if you don't do that as fast as light speed, they start yelling at you to move. Heck, I've been yelled at by those people for stopping when the arrival area was very open. There wasn't a single person in line and I couldn't wait 3 mins for my wife to find her luggage. It was like 1 am and her flight was delayed in SF......but I can't wait for her, even though I see her getting her luggage 40 feet away.

I've been to a lot of airports....and the people at Hopkins are the worst. They really have a chip on their shoulders.

First of all.. I was joking.

Second of all... I fly a good bit too and I have never had a problem... But on the bright side, a lot of airports are now building "cell phone lots" where you can park temporarily before you get to the actual pick up lanes. That way when your party has picked up the bags and moved outside, they call up your cell phone and you can pick them up in 2 minutes. Those work well....

And if you don't like that, pay the $3 and park your car and go help your wife... sheesh.

I don't know why you're having issues at Hopkins. I've planted myself in arrivals and parked and waited several times, since 9/11. No one has ever told me to move on. I've only had that happen in Norfolk, VA. But understandably so...There is a TON of military presence in the Tidewater area.

Judge drops resisting arrest count in Bodden trial
By Marla Ridenour
Beacon Journal sportswriter

POSTED: 07:12 p.m. EST, Feb 05, 2008

CLEVELAND:A charge of resisting arrest against Browns cornerback Leigh Bodden was dropped today during the second day of his jury trial in Cleveland Municipal Court.

Proceedings are expected to conclude Wednesday regarding Bodden's Sept. 5 arrest while picking up his girlfriend and their two children at Cleveland Hopkins International Airport.

After the prosecution rested its case with testimony from three Cleveland police officers, Judge Anita Laster Mays decided there was insufficient evidence of resisting arrest, despite the objection of the prosecutor. Bodden still faces charges of misdemeanor aggravated disorderly conduct, failure to display a driver's license and two traffic offenses.

Also testifying were two witnesses for the defense flown in from Arizona and California. Both approached Bodden's girlfriend after the incident because they were upset with how Bodden had been treated by the arresting officer.

''It was a pretty shocking thing,'' said Kathleen Johansen of Mesa, Ariz. ''What happened to Mr. Bodden was not right. If anything at all, he deserved a parking ticket. He didn't deserve what he got.''

The bulk of the day's testimony came from the arresting officer, Dale Dvorak. He said Bodden disregarded his initial instructions to stop when he was illegally backing up his GMC Yukon to park at the curb and also failed to comply with his orders to return to his vehicle and to stop swearing. After Dvorak decided to write Bodden a ticket and asked for his driver's license, he said, Bodden became ''more loud and abusive.''

After Dvorak warned Bodden to stop yelling or he would be arrested, the officer grabbed Bodden's arm and Bodden said, ''Get your hands off me.'' When he made a call for assistance and put Bodden up against the wall, the officer described Bodden's demeanor as ''highly agitated and out of control.''

Bodden will be among those testifying Wednesday. If convicted, Bodden could also face discipline from NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell.

Marla Ridenour can be reached at mridenour@thebeaconjournal.com. Read her Browns blog at http://www.ohiomm.com/blogs/browns/.

Wow, imagine that. When a cop puts you up against the wall for a traffic citation, then the perp gets more agitated. I hate cops-----or gestapo---whatever you want to call em.
