The Cards canned Denny Green today...

TEMPE, Ariz. -- The Arizona Cardinals fired coach Dennis Green on Monday after he failed to turn the downtrodden franchise into a winner in three seasons on the job.


Green was dismissed one day after the Cardinals concluded a 5-11 season with a 27-20 loss at San Diego. He finished with a 16-32 record at Arizona. The Cardinals will pay $2.5 million to buy out the final year of his contract.


He was the seventh coach the Cardinals have had since the franchise moved to Arizona in 1988. Green's mission was to turn around the perpetually losing Cardinals, who have had one winning season since 1984, and put a winner into the new stadium when it opened this season.


The stadium, the signing of running back Edgerrin James and the drafting of quarterback Matt Leinart stirred up interest in the team, which sold out every home game this year.


But after a season-opening home victory over San Francisco, the Cardinals lost eight in a row and quickly fell out of the playoff hunt. The skid included close home losses to St. Louis, Kansas City and, most memorably on a Monday night, Chicago.


Green demoted offensive coordinator Keith Rowen after six games and replaced him with Mike Kruczek, one of many shakeups on his staff during his time with the Cardinals. Leinart replaced Kurt Warner after five games and showed great promise.


However, the team's fortunes didn't turn around until the coach finally settled on who should play on the offensive line. Arizona won four of its last seven but it was too little, too late.


Green was out of coaching after his decade with the Minnesota Vikings ended in 2001. He was lured back by a four-year, $10 million contract and the belief that Arizona was on the brink of becoming a successful team.


He made several moves that seemed to backfire, beginning with the abrupt release of offensive lineman Pete Kendall on the eve of his first training camp. In his first season, Green benched quarterback Josh McCown for Shaun King even though the team had won three of its last four. By the time McCown got the job back, the Cardinals had lost three straight.


Green's three teams in Arizona went 6-10, 5-11 and 5-11. He has a career NFL coaching record of 124-115.

A someone who paid attention to the Vikes because a budddy of mine is a Vikings fan.... Dennis Green isn't smart enough to be a good coach. I mean, he doesn't have enough common sense and is awful at clock management.
He blew the NFC champion game in 1999 against the Falcons with his clock management. A couple years earlier, rhen Vikes beat the Giants in a road playoff game in spite of Green's bumbling. Down to scores, he punted with four minutes left even though it was only 4th and three at their own 40. Yeah they ended up winning thanks to horsebleep luck, but he's a stupid coach. Vikings fans would laugh at us if we hired him.

I think it was 2001 or 2002.... Vikings were on the clock with IIRC, the 8th overall pick. They RAN OUT OF TIME! and the team behind them in the draft order moved up!

The Atlanta Falcons announced Monday, Jan. 1, they have released head coach Jim Mora from the remaining two years of his contract.

Mora got his self fired with his comments about Washington..

As long as being a 1000yd rusher is important to him, you're right.

Which is a dumb reason to fire a coach who's home state is Washington.

If I was the coach in Miami, and a Cleveland radio station asked me the same question, I would probably respond in a similar fashion. You always have a soft spot for your home town, and some things are said in jest in those radio interviews.

When does Cower make his annoucment? Isn't it supposed to come Tuesday?

thats buetiful .. BLANKS is the one that INSISTED that moronic trade to get Vick .. and now he keeps staying and FIRING COACHES .. and the first coach he fired was a DAMM GOOD COACH in Reeves ..

having alot of money is a buetiful thing .. allows u to be a MORON and not be held accountable for it ..

And Mora despite some of his issues was not a bad coach overall..

To an extent....but I think Mora's comments a few weeks back about his "dream job" had more to do with it than anything else.

I'm not pimping him, but if we replaced Crennel with Green, how long would it take people to notice?

Steelers coaches talk to other teams about top jobs

The Steelers have granted permission to two NFL teams to talk to two of their assistants for head coaching jobs.

The Arizona Cardinals will talk to both offensive coordinator Ken Whisenhunt and offensive line coach Russ Grimm. The Atlanta Falcons will talk to Whisenhunt. Both teams fired their head coaches on Monday.

Whisenhunt and Grimm are considered candidates to replace Steelers coach Bill Cowher if he steps down as expected by early next week.
