I was reading about the much delayed (what an understatement) Duke Nukem:Forever. This game was first being developed and talked about in the last century I believe around '97 or '98. Which got me to thinking about some old school games I played on my PC back in the day and even before that on the 'ol Commodore. What are some of your old school favs? The top 2 for me: 1. Maniac Mansion 2. Duke Nukem 3D I remember how cool I thought Maniac Mansion was, and how the game changed depending on what characters you used. And even a friend of mine who spread rumors of a "hidden attic" that had some things in it that I can't quite remember. As much as I played it, I never found this secret crap he talked about. He was such a BS'er. Then Duke Nukem. Dialing up my friend on the computer to play one-on-one till 4 am. That is until someone called his house and disconnected us. A couple others that I remember spending time playing a lot was games like Command and Conquer, Phantasmagoria, 4th and Inches, Doom, and Myst. Man, has gaming evolved from the days of playing 4th and Inches to playing Madden '08.

Man, I love Maniac Mansion. I'll still play it every now and then even though I know the game like the back of my hand.
Another one of my favorite old computer games is Sim City (the original). At the time, it was just so freaking innovative. I remember playing that game for hours on end.

I had Sim City for Super Nintendo. I used to play it for hours as well. Always got mad when my residential areas never grew.......probably because I set them up the same way all the time.

My answer as well. I always looked forward to Oregon Trail Day at school. we had 1 computer in the entire school, so every class all had to take turns sharing. We got to play about once per month.

It matters how old school you are talking about?
Warcraft 1 and 2, Starcraft, Counter-strike (older version) Quest for Glory (entire series) Diablo 2, ULTIMA ONLINE (Pre age of shadows)
I could keep going.

The game that made me a hardcore gamer...The Original DOOM!
But I go back to the Odyssey...how many remember that? I remember when my mom bought our first pc, it was and Atari computer. When you turned it on, it had a blue screen and a blinking cursor, that was the window. I remember writing programs to have fun.

Well since my first computer was a Commodore 64 back in '82, and I had Zork I & II, and a game called Dungeons of Death, which was a character graphic D&D game. But as for modern PC gaming (like when you didn't just read descriptions, but actually maneuvered a sprite through a virtual world. ) Probably Duke Nukem 3D & Shadow Warrior. On Playstation I loved Twisted Metal, that must have been mid 90's.

Define "old school" Circa 1993 - Favorite, hands down, is Sid Meier's Railroad Tycoon Circa 1995-ish - Favorite is Civilation 2, also a Sid Meier game, and Master of Orion. From 1997 through 2003 - the Myth (NOT Myst) franchise starting with Myth: The Fallen Lords and then Myth II: Soulblighter. Since then, the Medal of Honor franchise (Allied Assault, Spearhead & Breakthrough). oh yeah, and on the C-64, my favorites were Spelunker and Space Taxi. On the TRS-80, my favoite was Bedlam.

I had 289 days in FFXI when I kicked the addiction. Played from day 1 and at least logged in every day for some period of time.
My friend had over 400 days, was fired from his job for being late because he would stay up till 4am playing it. Then he got 9 months unemployment where he did nothing but play all day.
Now with a 9 month old daughter I doubt I will play any MMORPG's for a long time. Maybe that's a good thing though.

Hope you mean "Started them all" as to you personally. Games were around long before '99
I played EQ on and off for about 4-5 years, but managed to control my playtime. Think I ended up with only like 80 days on my main. Never even maxed him out. http://eqplayers.station.sony.com/character_profile.vm?characterId=446676682229

I meant started all MMRPG, Divorces, bad parents, loss of significant others, and real friendships. But I have to say camping Lguk for 6+ hours for Yak or fbss was worth it. Those were the Good old days, Pre-Luclin. I quit the game and sold my account for $500, then the guy ruined my good name lol. Then the same guy bought me and my freinds druid (port bot) and ruined its name lol..

Back in the late '80's, on my Apple IIE, we used to love playing Family Feud, Jeopardy, original Mario Brothers, and Flight Simulator.

I feel ya.
My daughter is now 20 months old, but unfortunately she's still difficult. I remember playing SOCOM 2 and 3 online every nite after work till 2am minimum and even later. Now I get online about 3 maybe 4 times a week and play. Right now it's UT III, and play from an hour to an hour and a half, I have to still try and feed her at night still, and don't want to be up all night and get woken up early by her, then drag but at work since my wife works dayturn.
Then the only time I really can play anything is when she's asleep, so I never play during the day unless my wife takes her somewhere.
But usually, I get dragged along with them.

Couple Games that stand out to me...
On my Commodore 64, the ones that stick out are Bards Tale and the Zork Series. Aslo a Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy done in the same manner as the Zork Games.
As I moved toward IBM compatible PC's, I liked the Kings Quest Games as well as all of the Civilization and Sim City Games. Sid Mier Games are some of my favorites. Populous was also a great PC Game....Nothing like playing God....is there...LOL....
Someone mentioned Railroad Tycoon.....but I much prefered Maxis' game A-Train (later bought up by the makers of the Sid Mier Games.)
One of my absolute favorites in the 90's was Full Throttle by Lucas Arts. Great Game and I always wished they made another. Similar to the Monkey Island series that was awesome as well. And who didn't like Leisure Suit Larry.....
But if you go back to the Atari days...You have the simple but great game Combat and Pitfall was HUGE back then. Tons of Atari 2800 Games
Then you have Arcade Games like Galaga (much better than Galaxians...LOL) Asteroids, Space Invaders, Gorf, Tron, Robotron, Defender, Donkey Kong, Pac-Man, Q-Bert, 1942, Commando, Spy Hunter, Mat Mania, Sinistar, Journey, and Gyrus....(I am leaving many out I know....LOL)
Dang....I played Video Games a lot more than I ever thought...LOL....
I thought I was wrong once....but I was mistaken...

Bards Tale on C64 I forgot about that one, I loved that game. After EQ, I moved to other MMoRPGS such as Dark Ages of Camelot, then returned to EQ for a bit. Beta'd and played Star Wars Galaxies, Horizons, Vanguard, and Lord of the Rings Online. Now I mainly play Team Fortress 2 and Call of Duty 4, don't even subscribe to any MMoRPGs anymore, just don't have the time.

PONG
I wish I still had the article but about 4 years ago a magazine had 10-13 yo play some old games like Pong, ET, Donkey Kong, Handheld Electronic Football. Some of the Quotes were halarious.
On Pong: Kid grabs the controller and says "What's this do? Controll the volume?
On Electronic Football: "This doens't look like football. It could easily be call "Run away from the dots".
That's all I remember but man it was a funny article.

Ah ha....I found it. Childs Play Here is the Pong Excerpt. Pong Atari • 1975 Atari's home version of its simple ball-and-paddle coin-op became the first smash-hit console and made videogames a new pastime in the swinging '70s. Niko: Hey—Pong. My parents played this game. Brian: It takes this whole console just to do Pong? Kirk: What is this? [Picks up and twists the paddle controller] Am I controlling the volume? John: I'm just going to do this [twists the paddle controller as rapidly as possible]. Tim: John, don't do that. You'll die. Andrew: This is a lot like that game. Um, whatchamacallit—air hockey. Sheldon: Except worse. Andrew: Blip. Blip. Blip. Blip. Becky: I don't even see the point of having sound on this. Andrew: Wow. The score is tied. It's so exhilarating. Brian: I saw a documentary on this. The game was so popular in arcades that it got jammed up with quarters. John: In this thing? [Points to the Pong game console] Tim: I would never pay to play something like this. John: I'd sooner jump up and down on one foot. By the way, is this supposed to be tennis or Ping-Pong? Becky: Ping-Pong. Gordon: It doesn't even go over the net. It goes through it. I don't even think that thing in the middle is a net. Tim: My line is so beating the heck out of your stupid line. Fear my pink line. You have no chance. I am the undisputed lord of virtual tennis. [Misses ball] Whoops. John: Tim, how could you miss that? It was going like 1 m.p.h. Sheldon: Hey, why does it say Sears on the controller? EGM: Sears sold it for Atari. Andrew: Isn't Sears, like, a clothing company? Becky: Sears makes everything. Actually, I've never been in there. EGM: Guess how much this thing cost when it came out. Kirk: Twenty bucks? EGM: Higher. Brian: $50? EGM: Higher. Brian: $100? EGM: Yep. Kirk: My God—I could almost buy a PS2 for that. I'm sure when this came out, it was better than whatever else was out. Want to play chess with me, son? No way, Dad. Brian: I want to play Pong! Tim: Oh, I'm starting to suck. John, you drained my skill. John: Yes, I used a power-up. Tim: What? There's no power-ups in Pong. The concept of a power-up hadn't been invented yet.
