I am just typing right now letting you know that I, a 19 year old kid, have just legally (Saturday night at least) had my first beers.... I waited til this point, knowing that it was legal in Canada as me and my old man went to Windsor casino. He did real well and won big money, which helped facilitate this haha... My first beer was a Coors light, the Corona Extra, then Heineken, Bud Light, Labbat Blue, Miller Lite, Guinness (YUCK), Sleeman's Clear, Molsen Light, and a couple of small Canadian light beers that I can't quite think of. So my first buzzed night finished at 11 beers, and I had a light hangover, because at this place called "The Beach" I was out of judgment enough to eat this 2 pound hamburger called Shamou just to get a free tshirt. So I downed 2 and a half pounds of food and got that... and has many beers and didn't lose money, it was all on Canada....
Now, the point of me going into detail on that was to prompt some discussion on the world of beer! After awhile I figured all the light beers kind of tasted the same. But my favorites were Heineken, Corona, Sleeman's, and Molsen. The only real bad one was Guinness, as that was just some thick stuff. My first was Coors light, and maybe since it was number one it didn't seem that great either.
Questions for you all now....
What major beers did I miss? I wanted to try Foster's and Beck's, but what else should have been tried? Any special stories of your first beer? What other beers are you personal favorites?
Lastly, next time I go I might look into some liquor, like your whiskey, scotch, etc. What do you guys recommend in that department?

Wow, you are all over the map there.
Guinness is delicious. Maybe you just gotta get used to it though----but I always enjoyed it, dating back to my first drinking experiences when I was 13.
Beers to try:
Boddington's---like guinness but a lighter texture and flavor. Tastes like Newcastle Brown.
Try out some Sam Adams products and some Sierra Nevada's. They are pretty similar craft beers.
You might also want to try a white ale like Hoegaarden or Blue Moon.
As a youngster, I was only allowed to drink on St. Patty's day, and I only could have 1 or 2 Guinness'
So I was kind of partial to the darker beers as I grew older. Now at the ripe old age of 26 I usually stick with Great Lakes Dortmunder, Sierra Pale Ale, or Heineken.

Sierra Nevada Pale Ale is my all-time number 1 beer followed by Sam Adams Boston Lager.
LOL - The Rish will be upset with this news as well. KS just doesn't prioritize winning...

I am a big Sierra fan. I will occassionally get a sixer of their porter or barleywine. Both are really tasty.

A friend of a friend stopped in last night. Actually, me and the friend were working on his car (anyone know why, on a 2001 cavalier the drivers side headlight won't work on low, but it does on high beam? Yeah, we changed the bulb - single bulb deal - and the headlights flash about 7 times when you turn the key? anyway, the brakes got done, as well as the oil, lube).
Where was I? Oh, so this friend brings over Leinenkugel beer. Had a Creamy Dark last night, a red.......man, it's some good stuff.
Leinenkugel - look for it.

Leinenkugel is very good. I've had 3 or 4 of the different kinds. The standard Leinenkugel, the Summer Shanty and the Sunset Wheat I can remember. I know I had at least one other flavor. All of them were really good...

Well, I was pretty impressed with the Creamy Dark and the red (don't remember the name exactly). Impressed enough that I'm going to try and find a place to buy the stuff.

At Giant Eagle I saw a Leinenkugel 12-pack that had six different flavors in it. You might wanna try that out...

Never had Foster's, but my brother says its awful.
My personal favorite is Honey Brown. Real nice flavor to it without being overly strong.
Out of the mainstream beers, I like Michelob Light the best.

Another one of my favs.....both the Sunset Wheat and the Summer Shandy are great beers for summertime. I bought some Sunset Wheat with my for tailgating the first game of the year. Otherwise it's Honey Brown for the games.

Sam Adams Cherry Wheat and Leinenkugel's Sunset Wheat are my "classy" beers of choice.

Stick to Labatt Blue and Blue Light. They will never fail you and never give you a nasty hangover. It seems like you live in MI or CA, so both will always be available.  Have fun, and drink responsibly, because while there is nothing wrong with having a few drinks, there is something wrong with driving when you shouldn't be. Congrats, and have some fun man. There is nothing like drinking a few beers while enjoying a great Browns game!

You put down 11 beers on your first night ever drinking, and remembered all 11? Bravo. Some good ones in general...Grolsch, Labatt Blue Light, Hoegaarten. You being 19, and perhaps living on a tighter budget, there is some good stuff that goes by the name Natty Light, on the street. Lately, I've been on a cider kick, switching between Woodchuck and Strongbow. Good stuff there. Might want to check out this thread for some other ideas.

Probebly ant telling ya nothing you dont already know, but Andersons in maumee has about every name of beer you might want. whenever were down there I normally grab a six pack of something I ant tried.

josh07, I gotta tell ya and ya probebly heard it all before.....Be smart dont drink & drive. there is no shame in calling your parents, brother sister, friend, taxi to pick you up or even walking instead of taking a chance on killing a inocent person or yourself, it just ant worth it.
Enjoy your beer, but understand there comes a responcibility with drinking.

Additionally, remember these helpful hints...
Liquor before beer, in the clear; beer before liquor, never been sicker.
Never mix your red and white wines in the same night.
A vitamin B complex taken with about 20 oz. of water before AND after a long night does wonders.

Maybe it's just me but I find it slightly disturbing that his Dad would sit there and let Junior down a 12 pack (essentially). I can't see my Dad doing that and I know damn well I'd stop my son well short of that. A couple of beers is fine. Half a case.......not so much.

My dad usually stops me. Unless we're in Athens. Even then aside from my 21st I don't get too bad around the parents...it's too uncomfortable.
What amazes me are all the parents who go out and get worse off than their kids. After dads weekend I kept hearing stories of "kids who had to put their dads in bed around 9 PM cuz they were praying to the porcelain gods."
It's one thing to have fun with your kids but it's another to set an example as well.

As I mentioned I damn sure wouldn't have slugged down a 12 pack with my old man. Wouldn't have wanted to and he would have stopped me long before 12. And what I was drinking back then really has no relevance to this discussion anyway.
I drank too much back then and smoked too much, too. But then I was in the Navy and it was almost expected. I would hope we're all a little smarter now. Perhaps that hope is misplaced.

When I was 19 and in college, it was not uncommon at all for me to go home for the weekend and drink with my dad and my mom... and my grandfather and aunts and uncles too for that matter... can't say that I ever counted, but I'm pretty sure I passed 12 on numerous occassions...

Since my parents don't drink, I have never had more than two or three beers around them (out of respect for their feelings) however both my son and daughter had been trashed in front of me, WAY before they were of legal age. It doesn't bother me (we are only young once). I am smart enough to not down a fifth of jack every day, or a case of beer every day like I did when I was younger, but I still toss a few back twice a week.

When I get together with my old man, and 22 year old brother, things always get crazy. We are rarely all together---but when we are, we crush beers like no other.
My mother sometimes gets pretty upset when she comes home to find my old man, my brother, and I all tanked.
Over christmas we crushed a bottle of Chivas, a bottle of Grey Goose, 12 Warsteiners, 6 Christmas Ales, and a 12 of Labatts between us on a single night. My relatives were in awe of our ridiculous excess.
I felt like that guy from "The Decline of Western Civilization: Part II" (just not that drunk and pathetic)

Sounds like a good night, I drank a little too much my first night... I threw a party a week after graduation, I ended up downing something like 14-15 beers. On an empty stomach too... Fun night, not the best morning, but it wasn't too bad. Another friendly tip, don't drink orange juice when you're hungover. I was fine until then. I wouldn't recommend Fosters, but Becks isn't bad. Now I haven't tried many beers, but I like Coors when I'm in the mood for a lighter taste, and Pale Ale if I want something with a little more taste. Then the Sam Adams products, I didn't like them very much at first, but they've really grown on me. And like Clay said, just be careful. Look after yourself and your friends. One time a friend got drunk at my place, then was adamant about trying to drive home. I just sat in front of the door and told him, "if you try to leave, I'll whoop you."  Thankfully it didn't have to come to that, but I would have, drinking is great but it's more important to know the responsibilities that come with it. You sound like you have a cool father, my pop is the same way. Whenever I head down to his place, he buys a couple of 12-packs and we just sit on the back porch, drinking and grilling. Lots of fun.
I want the Cleveland Browns to be my pallbearers so they can let me down for the last time.

Good advice. If I want to get a buzz rollin' in a hurry, couple quick shots does it.
Drinking a few beers, then the hard liquor can be nasty.

I'd have to say I'd feel a bit uncomfy at 19 years old downing that much beer with my dad. Not that he'd approve it anyways. He still gets ticked everytime my brother has a beer, but that's a little different. He's had his share of problems.

I don't remember the first beer I drank ever, but I do remember the first time I got drunk One of my buddies brothers had a party and had a bunch of 40's left over, so he took a box of St. Ides and I drank 2 and got annihilated. It wasn't pretty My favorite beer is Cherry Wheat. Favorite beer in a can is orig Coors, favorite beer to binge drink is Miller Light!  I am not into the real dark beers myself. It seems everytime I drink em I get a pounding headache the next day. When I am in Canada and out I pound reg molson! Down here Molson Canadian doesn't taste the same as up there

Oh my dad was just happy that I waited to drink legally. I never drank during high school. I know with the genes in my family I have to be careful. I mean he was driving, didn't drink at all (hasn't for 20+ years) so this whole incident was planned out and responsible. He's a good father and a friend, and kept watch over me the whole time. I even tried my little sobriety test of walking a straight like toe to heel and aced it....
As far as liquor tho... which is what I'm going to try a bit of (see... always in moderation) in that area? Jack and coke? Scotch on the rocks? I don't know what the main, bare essentials in that area are. I mean the next time I go to Canda will be months from now, probably 2 or 3 just to be safe. Any advice on that? (Beerdowner seems to give the best but I'll take whatever else comes)

If I am drinking a lot, like open bar somewhere it's rum and cokes. You should try Jager if your gonna do shots. It's not harsh so you can prep for stronger stuff like whiskey. It does taste like black liquorish though

Let me caution you on the rum or whiskey and coke combo...when I was a novice I decided it would be a great idea to get drunk on these mixed drinks a bar one night. Well, I got home, and due to all the caffeine, laid in bed, couldn't fall asleep, and the hangover ended up creeping up on my still-awake butt as 4-5am.
It may take time to develop a taste, but try something like a Makers Mark on the rocks, or mix that with Coke if you must.
Another good liquor drink at a bar - order a Captains and 7 (Captain Morgan rum and 7-up). Kinda has a vanilla pudding taste, IMO.
3 Olive grape vodka and 7 or Sprite is also a decent drink to chill out with for a bit.
Could go the sophisticated look and jump right into the world of martini's. Go with Grey Goose or another top shelf vodka if you're going to go that route. Have them dash it with some lime juice for a hint of a sweeter taste.
