Got it. don't hate black people... hate rich people.

That is not "what I said". The "class war" is where the "fight is". Our interests and the matters that concern these two groups are basicly opposite each other. So it's not a question of "hate". It's a matter of the poor uniting together to "vote". To fight on a political level. But I think you knew that when you played the drama queen with that post.

But it's quite simple. Working poor neither can afford nor offered health care. Our elderly who are living on SSI often have to decide on wheather to pay heating bills or buy groceries and they BUILT this damned country! Why? Co-pays and insurance costs...............

My ex-father in law is a WW2 veteran and lives like a pauper for "his service".

That is not a just system.

Yet those who have plenty despise the idea of providing these people with health care. They opose minimum wage laws,etc....

They truely show that they flat out don't give a damn about "their fellow Americans" even on a strictly "humane basis". Unless of course it's "your park, your neighbors, or your childs school".

Everyone else? Can fend for themselves. Oh but, good luck to them. You know......................

And you hit the nail on the head DC.
It's the liberal democrats who sponsor, back and fuel the money machine for the KKK and white supremacists. What was I thinking?

While it is a very "small percentage", we know who stands to gain keeping the poor divided, don't we?

I don't despise providing assistance to the truly needy nearly as much as I despise someone else counting my money.

Q. What specifically do you believe the minimum wage should be (in dollars) in your socialist utopia?

A. That amount isn't nearly enough to sustain people to the lifestyle they desire.

Well I'm Sicalian. That makes me black in the eyes of some other Italians.

Seriously I know back in the day Little Italy in Cleveland was not the place to go if you were black. I thought it was changing. Has it not?

The difference is in the word desire. Hell, I make a pretty good salary and I don't have the lifestyle I desire. There's lots of things that I personally classify as a "want" and therefore I don't have it. Need > Want.

I understood the question. I was replying to your given answer to that question.

I think that the answer would vary depending on where someone lives. The cost to live isn't the same everywhere. A livable wage in Cleveland would be considered poverty level somewhere else. A low income wage where I live would be considered upper middle class in other places in the country. So I don't think there is a "standard" that one can place on that.

Pit, WW2 ended over 60 years ago. Your ex-father in law was probably in his mid 20s when that happened.. how he lives now has a lot more to do with what he did for those 60 years than anything else. If he was injured, wounded or disabled then I reserve the right to change that opinion... but just out of curiosity, what standard of living should the government guarantee him for his service?

I was going to reply to pit, but then I changed my mind, but now I changed it back.

Here's the story on Social Security. It was designed to be supplemental to what you had saved over your working life. It never was intentioned to be, nor should it become, one's sole source of supporting themselves.

Also, those living on s.s. are 95% of the time also covered under medicare.

Is it my fault that they saved nothing over there working careers? Is it my fault they lived paycheck to paycheck?

And before anyone even goes there, I want to say YES, THERE ARE SOME EXCEPTIONS.

Here's an example of just 1 person that I would call stupid. My neighbor works for GM. He constantly complains about how he needs to make more money - the company is screwing him. (yeah, the company that is paying him $29 per hour, and the same company that, when benefits are factored in - medical and retirement - is paying out roughly $80 per hour for him to work there)

So, as soon as the new contract got signed this fall, what's he do? 2 new vehicles, plus he put in a pond - and his exact words were: they can't get rid of me now - not til the contract is up."

See, he is the type of person that is going to complain when he gets to retirement age. He's going to say "hell, I can't live on this" and get upset. However, with the over time he works, he's grossing over $79,000. The fact that he spends more than that per year and that is the problem, has never entered his head.

He won't have to complain. Others will cry that "he is forced to now make a decision if he will heat his house or buy groceries...And he built the damned country. It's the fault of someone else that works smarter, harder, faster and longer. We should grab his money."

I know what you mean.....after all, there will be billionaires then, too....they should have to pay.

I haven't heard any one mention the fact that g.m. lost about $35 billion last quarter - well, other than hillary saying she's going to tax businesses at a higher rate.

And people wonder why I want a wall built on the mexican border... Geesh..

This is pretty simple, either that mexican guy knew he was breaking the law, and did it anyway. In which case, we need to pile in to a couple of thousand cars and head for Reno and teach this boy a lesson..

Or he's just stupid...

I see people like that all the time.

I work for a good company, that when business is good they share the wealth in monthly bonuses, during the construction peak a couple years ago, a $1500/mo bonus was not uncommon. THAT is sharing.

Yet, I hear some of the guys complain they don't have any money anymore to do this or that now that business is slow and those bonuses are down to a couple hundred dollars (Personally I'm thankful they even give anything, we are honestly living of other company investments, the company itself is not profiting right now).

These are the same people that bought $40k cars when things were good, and made major home improvements, a couple(who are in foreclosure now) took large equity loans to take fancy vacations. They just don't understand the concept of living within your means. And those means were not paltry. Our lowest paid guy probably made 70-75k during the good times.

Me personally, I've been saving and investing, and I'm still scared as heck that I won't have enough to sustain a secure retirement.

Some will argue that SS is required because companies don't take care of their employees any more.. that becomes a chicken and egg situation... as the government has enacted more and more "safety nets" under people, companies have felt less and less compelled to spend the money required to take care of their employees, especially the retired ones who are no longer producing anything of value to the company. And I maintain that as long as the government continues to increase its involvement, companies will continue TO LET THEM. And as government support creeps up, company support will creep down... in the end it's a lateral move for the people involved..

Yes, I guess the Democrats "like losing" by keeping the poor divided??? Sorry, but that doesn't "add up". Kennedy and Johnson were BOTH Democratic presidents that did "everything in their power" to bring about equality and an end to "racial strife" as we know it. So history refutes your assertions on this IMO

Well, according to Arch, they fixed the NFL and helped him pay a "fair electric bill" just fine! Since he seems to be "self sustaining" and they've "helped him", why not everybody else?

I would have cut the damn thing down too if it was flying above "Old Glory" in the U.S. The only flag that can fly over the U.S. flag is the church pennant during devine services.

Also, you neglected to tell how GM faired "world wide" as a corperation. And that they restructured and were "expecting" record losses in America. And that in losing this money during this "restructure" most of what they did lose here is a tax right off.

Don't you mean that Hillary is talking about "restoring their prior tax level"? You know, before, as McCain put it, Bush gave out his "tax cut to the rich"????

Not my words, but John McCains words. You know, the guy running for president? I guess he and Hillary agree on this. Or did McCain "flip flop" on that?

Do you HONESTLY have a clue what a tax write off is? Please answer that question.

And no, I did not "neglect" to state what GM worldwide did last year. I simply do not know. Please, in one sentence, tell me: what was GM's, as a world wide company - what was their profit/loss last year. I do not know, but since you brought it up, tell us.

And lastly, I don't care how hillary phrases it, a tax increase is a tax increase, is it not?

As for mccain and his "Bush's tax cut for the rich" statement, I simply need to ask you: If you pay taxes, based on a percentage of your income, and you get a tax break in a certain percentage of the taxes you pay, would it not follow that people that pay more in taxes end up getting more back? Doesn't change the percentage they pay, but if you pay $100,000 in taxes, and I pay $1000 in taxes - and we both get a 10% reduction - can you see where I'm going here??????? That means you would pay $10,000 less in taxes, and I would pay $100 less.

You still pay $90,000 in taxes, and I pay $900.

See how it works? So how is an across the board tax cut favoring the rich? If you want to cut taxes for the people that don't PAY taxes, but keep others at the same level, or even the "rich" at the same level, that is not a tax cut. That is welfare/socialism.

Now, as you so conveniently stated in another thread - where you put words in my mouth - let me repay that here: Apparently you favor welfare and socialism.

The government should guarantee you a wage that can sustain a family? One wage? One income? The purpose of the minimum wage is to make sure high school and college age kids and entry level folks with no real skills don't get exploited, it's not meant to make sure a 40 year old man can have a stay at home wife and raise 2 kids.

It takes two sides to achieve polarization Pit... It's just like when a senator says, "We couldn't get anything done because the other side wouldn't work with us." Well guess what, that also means that you wouldn't really work with them.

My question is how do you regulate a minimum wage that is a liveable wage? Are we going to pay high school kids 410 OR $12 a hour. Do we have different tiers for young and old. How do you stop business from highering younger kids if their wages are cheaper ththen adults? It's not such a black and white issue as some make it out to be.

forget about young and old...it's insignificant.

Take an average of the nation's cost of living, and find an average of what a livable wage, and find some middle ground there.

You can't expect mom and pop businesses to make sure their employees are monetarily competetive, so you find an acceptable national average of a livable wage, and knock a couple points off

I won't say this is an "iron clad plan", but it's certainly a "point from which to work from".

I'm often times amazed how those claiming that "government health care is an impossible nightmare" and saying "a liveable wage isn't achievable" are the very same people who say "conquering terrorism around the globe is achievable".

That's almost an oxymoron.

I guess only the ardious and difficult situations "they wish to address are achievable". All else is a hopeless lost cause.

You're right DC. We can fight terrorism around the globe, go to bat for all of "the free world" but can't make our country "affordable to our own citizens". What was I thinking?

Hmmm. That "line item veto" thing has been a stickler hasn't it? The fact is, Bush has tried to "circumvent the law" with every turn. Will veto ANY bill that doesn't "suit him". Like the "spy bill". He pretty much claims if "immunity isn't written into it for his administration" he will veto it.

Nah, that isn't "polarising" at all!

It's because of corperate welfaire and special interest lobby money that makes the Dems stance so legitimate. This time DC, this recession may be deep enough to hit those who "just couldn't quite see it before". When they do, they'll realise just how much things have changed.

Hopefully it won't get that far. Because by the time it dos, it may be past the point of return. The 1930's will be back in the 21st century. That would be a sad day indeed.

And to be "real", name ONE GOP president that has pushed forward a "civil rights bill". I think Lincoln may have been the last one.

So some kid in Nebraska lives well doing the same job as a kid in DC who can't pay his rent? Yea, I can't see any thing for people to complain about there...

Yeah, I guess we can spend more time "nitpicking reasons it wouldn't work" than working on ways "to make it work". But in the business world, that's considered quite counterproductive.

But hey, it's been a diversionary tactic ( but little else but excuses ), to keep a broken health care system on its last leg for 20 years with NOTHING being done. It oughtta work with a liveable wage too............................

The current federal mimimum wage is $5.85. What do you propose the minimum wage should be? ("Livable" isn't a measurable wage)

You're right DC. We can fight terrorism around the globe, go to bat for all of "the free world" but can't make our country "affordable to our own citizens". What was I thinking?

What does that mean, "make our country affordable to our own citizens"? There are only two ways to make our country affordable to our own citizens.. drive prices down or drive incomes up... both of which have side effects which need to be considered. People already gripe and moan that we import cheap goods from China, well guess what, if the price of soap goes from $2.00 to $3.00 because we made it here, then the country just got less affordable. And if the government mandates that the guy that makes soap should make $20 an hour instead of $12 an hour, then the price of soap has to go up.. not to mention, if you artificially inflate wages, the price of goods and services will go up, therefore that big raise people thought they got, ain't going to amount to much. We don't live in a static economy where you can just tweak one thing (like wages) and not expect it to have an effect on a bunch of other things.. and sometimes I get the feeling that some people just don't understand that...

Really? You mean we can't find "an average rent" nationwide? An average "food budget" nation wide?

I believe that "If you are married or have graduated" that you deserve to be able to afford to "live in America" if they expect you to "contribute to America".

Anything else? Takes us right back to the 30's and will lead once again to social unrest and a rise to power of labor unions. Some just don't get it.

If people honestly think that the average working guy isn't "steadily going backwards" they need to think again. And people will not half starve and live in sub standard housing while lining the pockets of others.

Either will work.

You tax the HELL out of imports and raise wages.

Look, those SAME PEOPLE griping about cheap imports, are many of the same people who caused this problem trying to "save a buck on a shirt" in the first place.

They sold their country down the river without even realising it. We gotta make up for lost time before it's too late to right the ship.

And we're damned near there already.

I agree with you that something needs to be done Pit. But I disagree that a national "average" is the best method. I'm sorry, but it costs more to live in some areas. A LOT more.

IIRC the average price of a house in Cuyahoga is around $110,000. The average cost in my county (Monroe) is $789,000 (This is 2007 statistics). See the difference? Now I'm not saying everyone should own a home, but if the price is that much different, the rents will be as well (and are, the average 2 bedroom house here is $1800 per month). So you see, the National average would do nothing to assist those that are here.

Conversely, if that National Average is higher than what Cleveland costs, they would have greater benefits and live above the average. So a "one-size-fits-all" measure isn't the best policy. But something should be done, just not sure how to do it.

What the hell does being married have to do with it? So if I'm a drop out and quit school at 16 and so does Susie, but then we get married when we're 19, then all of the sudden we're entitled to something? If you're single you get at least a minumum wage.. if you're married you get at least 2 minimum wages...

You still have not defined what it means to be able to afford to live in America... What standard of living constitutes that? a 2 bedroom apartment? a small home? a car? 2 cars if you're married? should you have money to dine out? take a vacation? join a gym? have a personal cell phone? a television? cable? support one kid? two kids? three kids? should you have a pet to feed and take to the vet? I'm not being sarcastic Pit... but these are some of the questions that need to be answered before you can even begin to decide what a "liveable wage" should be...

Livable isn't measurable. Do you want the amount on your paycheck to say "Livable" when you go to the bank?

$5.85 per hour is measurable. $50,000 per year is measurable.

Are you advocating that we find the average price for rent, food, clothing, et al nationwide and then make that amount the annual minimum wage (at least for those married or graduates)?

PS- For the record, by definition everyone that lives in America is able to afford living in America.

Are you looking for perfection..you won't find it.

I'm not looking at demographics...they don't matter. What I'm saying is that every citizen that is legally working, should at least make an amount to live off of.

You can nitpick and complain all you want, but as you repubs like to say...what's your plan? do away with minimum wage? go back to exploiting the labor force, the driving factor in our economy. If that's your plan, we'll see how that works out.
