As a smoker, it hasn't affected me at all. I still go out to bars/restaurants that are non-smoking. If I need to smoke, I step outside, no big deal to me....I've adapted.

There isn't a statewide ban in PA. I live right on the border of 2 counties....one has a smoking ban in effect, the other doesn't. However, most of my favorite restaurants are in the county that has the smoking ban. I will still patronize those restaurants....in fact, I prefer restaurants to be smoke free, because I don't want to smell smoke while I'm eating.

I kind of like going to bars and not being in a fog.

But I dislike going to bowling alleys and having it smell like a bowling alley. The smoky smell in there was a good thing.

I find going out a lot more pleasurable, but I had to go with the ninja choice, just because I really am.

It hasnt affected me as far as going out. More NE Ohio bars need to get those outdoor heaters they have had in Columbus for the past few years. I dont have as much natural insulation as most people.

It would make it easier to quit smoking. When I quit for a couple of months, it made it hard to go to the bar and not smoke. As a non smoker it hurt my eyes. I started smoking from bummin one here and there at the bar. Then started buying packs when I went to the bar because I remember how much I hated people asking me for a smoke. It went all downhill from there.

I always thought drinking made me want a cigerette more but when I quit the beer actually tasted better and I drank faster.

It is a major PITA to be shooting pool with a stick in hand and not a smoke in my mouth!

I hate walking outside, because a bunch of people voted for such a stupid thing!

It's been great! Nice to go out and not smell like I smoked 10 packs of cigarettes when I don't smoke at all. If you want to smoke, great, do it at your expense, not mine.

Too bad it took so long for such a brilliant law to pass.

I still go out. I used to burn through a whole pack or more in one night... now I smoke maybe 5 or 6 in a night.

I guess for me, I've finally accepted it, but it still isn't beneficial to the VFW's attendance and profits, which is very sad to me.

I love being able to take my kids to a restaurant and not have smoke drifting over from the smoking section.

Sorry, didn't see this previously.....

I thought my "point" was obvious. If people include stupid poll options or slant the answers so one choice isn't better than another for lots of folks, then there is no "consensus."

Your "point" of those who love it outnumber those who hate it is invalid due to the ninja option. My "point" of the number of those who love it being outnumbered by Ninjas had nothing to do with my vote in the poll or whether or not I "love or hate" it, so if you construed your rolly eyes reply from that you were incorrect.

As to whether or not I do hate or love it, there is a middle ground.....I hate smoke, but I realize that it is a personal choice and people should be allowed to make that personal choice, but by the same token they should not be allowed to make that choice for others.

For someone to state that it is their "right" to smoke, you and I can argue that it is our right to not be offended by that person's personal choice to smoke by having it within our clothes and lungs.

As for the previous arguments about how it does not affect business, that is complete and utter hogwash. You can say that parking lots are still full, and I can show that receipts dropped off dramatically between the ban AND the increase of the cost of gasoline at about the same time. I'll take receipts/deposits vs your car count any day of the week.

Veteran's organizations and member clubs (Moose, Elks, Eagles) should have been allowed an exemption.

The biggest travesty was and is the fact that people did not know what they were voting for.

Ah but people did know what they were voting for. It was all there in black and white.

What was also there in black and white was an attempt by the tobacco industry to put through some garbage amendment that would have taken all local non-smoking laws and trashed them. It backfired on them.

How long has it been since this law was passed now anyway? I believe that it's been under enforcement for better than a year now. None of the bars that I routinely drive by have boarded up. The couple of bars that I go to from time to time are still doing about the same business. (from a decidedly unscientific visual estimation) Further, even one bar owner who complained bitterly about how it was going to kill his business has just quieted down ..... and continues collecting his receipts ...... and continues in business ..... a year plus later .... with no sign of slowing down .....

How many bars have boarded up in your neck of the woods? I bet it's not many. How about pool halls ...... bowling alleys ..... private clubs ...... ? I can't recall seeing any around here.

If you see something happening, isnt that a fact? I have yet to see a bar go out of business, as a matter of fact I see more and more opening.

Yep. fact is, I've seen almost every bar create a smoking patio where patrons can go smoke if they choose ....... and I see a number of people at a time outside smoking.

Another fact is that so many bar owners said that this law would put them out of business by now ..... yet they are still going strong.

Well then......it's hard to argue your facts of going to every establishment in each of the 88 counties to observe the construction of outdoor patios and taking these census of people standing outside every bar in the state of Ohio. What the hell was I thinking?????

You have?

All of them? In all 88 counties?

As some Head Coach once said ..... "I can only go by what I see". What I see in this area is bars still open for business ..... most of them having new smoking patios, and (apparently) lots of happy patrons. Further, I don't see bars going out of business in this area. If anyone in the Youngstown area can give me a list of bars who have boarded up in the past year, then maybe I'd revise my opinion ...... but I personally haven't seen many ... and I can't recall a single one that didn't have other legal issues that closed them down.

Well, I guess I should just ignore the local news story where they interviewed bar owners who said it is hurting their businesses, and I should ignore Mike Taggart, who owns our Browns bar, when I've talked to him personally about how much money he says he's lost since it started, and I should probably also ignore the poster on this board who owns a bar and who has posted about it many times because Y-Town knows all!!

No they shouldn't be allowed an exemption. It would be unfair to the other business owners - it should be a level playing field across the board.

The VLT users (slots) - a lot of them smoke, and would just go to the places that still allowed smoking.

FWIT: the town I live in went non-smoking five years ago and while the odd bar has closed, another would spring up to take its place. Bars survive mostly because of the slot machines (VLTs), in my opinion. They are a license to print money for bar owners.

Was that really necessary??

Ytown never claimed to know all, he gave his opinion based on his experiences and his personal observations. You sure get snippy when someone elses opinion differs from yours.

That's the way he was coming off about it, because he "sees" a certain thing then that must be indicative of bars in Ohio. It has nothing to do with my "opinion" on this subject.

I went back and read my post to you several times to make sure, but I am pretty sure I never TOLD you how to post, I asked you question. See that little ? thingy? That means question.

Ok so maybe the bars receipts are down a little, cant be too much or they would be going out of business. My personal observation is that there still seems to be a crowd at the bar at the same times there has always been crowds at the bar, the bars were packed on St Pattys day, as usual, people I know who I go to the bar with who smoke, still go to the bar as usual. Maybe at first there was a little bit of a downturn but IMO it will all level out.

I'm just relating what I've heard and been told by actual bar owners. I tend to believe them over people that are just guessing.
