BlackBerry service out in N. America

An outage has disconnected BlackBerry smart phones across North America.

AT&T Inc. says the disruption Monday is affecting all wireless carriers. AT&T first learned about the problem at about 3:30 p.m. EST.

There's no word on the cause or when the problem might be fixed.

BlackBerry maker Research in Motion did not immediately return a phone call.

I thought something was wrong. Now I am going to get like 50 emails and 20 IM's all at once when the service is restored.

See, and you all thought there was no harm by all the under sea cables being cut.

Just a question, is it extra a month to have a blackberry or any other smartphone?

That may factor into a decision with my next phone if I wanna go with a smartphone or a Voyager.

Most of the people with Blackberry's don't even need them. They could do fine with a $2 Walmart cell phone.

It's most useful to business people who are on the go alot, and seldom in an office, or that travel alot, especially abroad. It's main draw seems to be emailing functions, which you can get on most mobile phones now.

And yes, I believe they have extra charges.

Yes. If you want to take advantage of all the features of a Blackberry/Smartphone, you will have to subscribe to some kind of "data" plan. The monthly costs on these run from an extra $5-10 per month to $35 /mo (and beyond).

Unless you REALLY need the e-mail and/or PIM functions of these phones, I'd say it is probably a waste of money to get one. They're pretty cool, but, IMO, it is overkill for most cell phone users.

Unless you have WiFi. I have a Starcom PPC6700 that does more than a Blackberry, and it connects to the wireless network we have at work. I can surf the net and get my email....as well as have the Windows Mobile and PDA features. It has a touchscreen and slide out keyboard. Works flawlessly with Outlook on the desktop. Don't need no stinkin' data plan.

Best of all, I got it used off of Ebay for 100 bucks.
