With the pitchers and catchers already in camp and a few position players already making some appearances early... The Tribe's 2008 has begun.

I want to hear some of your thoughts and opinions on who we nay see step up this season, either those on the club or coming up from the Minors, and how the Tribe may fair against the rest of the Central, AL, and MLB for that matter.

I really like what I am hearing from the camps so far.... Victor Martinez has dropped 13 pounds and has Wedge very excited. He isn't the only one either... Garko has lost 15-20 pounds!!

Kobayashi has been impressing Victor and that is a good sign since Victor is a patcher's catcher. He recognizes good stuff when he sees it. I think we will see Kobayashi as the closer at some point this season if he impresses. Borowski is way too shaky.

A recent article said that Marte is fighting for a spot as an everyday player. He has the power, but can't seem to find the consistency. If he does... watch out! I still believe in Andy Marte, but if he doesn't step up this season...he's gone. I personally think he will and prove everyone wrong. He could be a .285, 30, 90 type player for us.

Another one fighting to stay alive in Cleveland may be Josh Barfield. I would like to think he can be the future 2B for the Tribe with Cabrera moving to SS, but all he showed me last year was good defense. With Josh Rodriguez showing better average and power at the plate, he could potentially pass Barfield.

As we all know, last season the Tribe got a lot of help from those in the Minors (Jensen, Cabrera, Carmona---hard to imagine he was in the Minors at the start, Gutierrez, Francisco, etc.) Who do you see stepping up this year? I think we may see a few guys come up in relief, but those who may make a big impact are Adam Miller either as a starter or reliever and Jordan Brown. Brown has been a sleeper around all of MLB in terms of Prospect sheets, but he has the bat to make a huge impact this year if we find ourselves with some injury troubles either in the OF or at 1B.

While I'm talking about prospects these ones may not make it up to the big league club this year, but are very bright prospects IMO.....

Nick Weglarz will be a big bat in the Tribe's line up in a few years. We don't need to fill LF long term because he will be in the mix in a few short years. However there are talks about a move to 1B. I don't like it with Mills and Garko already there. He just turned 20 and is also turning heads.

Beau Mills - Hard to tell where he will play right now. Could play 3B or 1B, but may have to be a DH. Doesn't have a big league arm, but already has a big league bat. 64 homeruns in 3 years at college (38 last year) Lewis-Clark State may not have the best competition, but was a star as a Freshman and Sophomore at Fresno St where competition is better. I am hoping he can strengthen his arm because he will be able to make the club a lot faster without Garko and Hafner standing in his way.

Trevor Crowe - The 2B project was a huge mistake. This kid is a Sizemore clone and the OF is where he belongs. He is a 5 tool player with an outstanding glove. He could be some good trade bait, but could also fill the void in LF. I look for either him or Gutierrez to be dealt in the future. Weglarz and Sizemore will be in that OF.

Chuck Lofgren - Big Lefty that has a very nice fastball and change-up. He was on the fast track, but with an up and down season last year, he could have set himself back year. Still a very promising pitcher. I put him at 1b in terms of pitcher prospects behind 1a. Adam Miller.

Wes Hodges - He is a fighter. With his bat... he could find himself at 3B in Cleveland very soon if Marte is a bust and Mills gets moved to 1B or DH. Once broke his wrist and instead of sitting out, switched to the left side of the plate and continued to hit without a drop in average. I really like this kid!

I KNOW THIS IS LONG, BUT THERE IS MORE LOL....
Enough about prospects... Who will step up this season that is already on the Indians?
I think Hafner will come back to his old self hitting close to or over .300 and putting up 40+ homeruns. Garko will hit close to .325 and put up close to 30 homeruns this season. Martinez will continue doing what he does best (hitting), but look for even more defensive production after losing the 13 lbs. I am hoping for Sizemore to cut down on the strikeouts, but I don't see it happening yet. His numbers will be better, but still not where they could be. If these guys can get better with Blake, Peralta, and Gutierrez doing what they did last season... I am predicting another Central Division championship.

And lastly....
A WORLD SERIES RING! The Mets or the Cubs will face Cleveland in the 2008 World Series and Cleveland will win in 5.

world series or bust, in my opinion

last year was about winning the division and making the playoffs, and now i think they raised the bar, because they were so close, had they been able to close out boston, they roll over colorado just like the sox did...

i expect better years out of grady sizemore and travis hafner, and if you couple that with what you got last year from everyone else? this team could be scary... travis hafner really could never get it going for more than a week or two at a time last year... i think a fresh clean slate is just what he needs...

despite all the hoopla surrounding cc and this contract deal, we still do have him for this entire year and that won't change as long as the tribe stays in contention

the central is still a tough division, but the tribe should win at least 3/4 of their games with both minnesota and kansas city, and you could even say the same for chicago...

detroit improved, but by how much? dontrelle willis hasn't been what he was a few years ago... and cabrera can hit, but his weight is really starting to become an issue...

i still think the tribe will win the division, but it should be a fun race between them and the tigers...

can fausto carmona repeat what he did, or will he go through a sophmore slump (i know he played 2 years ago, but this is truly his sophmore year)

i think paul byrd won't get any kind of punishment, and i think we'll see much of the same of what we saw from him last year, he's so consistent, i wouldn't call him great, but he's consistent

can jake westbrook rebound from a so-so year? and maybe pickup where he left in the playoffs, where he had pitched pretty well? remember he really did a hell of a job keeping us in that game 7

i'm really glad to hear victor martinez and ryan garko have both dropped weight, i think that could open up victor to play a little more first base...

i'm excited, but i also know that their success last year doesn't guarantee them anything for this year...

I think Victor's weight drop will allow him to catch more. As much as I like Shoppach... this team is better with Victor and Garko in there at the same time. I understand giving Victor a rest, but not once every five days. I don't care what Paul Byrd thinks.

Also... with Toregas and McBride in the minors... this could be Shoppach's last season in Cleveland. He could help us land a very nice player. If Victor gets more innings behind the plate this year.. allow Shoppach to begin his career as a starting catcher somewhere else next season and groom McBride for the future. McBride is very good defensively and can hit well.

This is how i see this club in 2011

C - Victor Martinez, Matt McBride
1B - Ryan Garko
2B - Josh Barfield, Josh Rodriguez
SS - Asdrubal Cabrera
3B - Wes Hodges, Jared Goedert
LF - Trevor Crowe/Jordan Brown
CF - Grady Sizemore
RF - Nick Weglarz, John Drennen
DH - Beau Mills

Hafner needs to pick it up... or he will be traded when the Tribe is ready to fully commit to Mills as the DH. Or... Hafner's contract will just run out and we won't resign him.

As for the rotation...

C.C. Sabathia (hopefully)
Adam Miller
Fausto Carmona
Chuck Lofgren
Aaron Laffey/Brian Slocum/David Huff - It's hard to say.

Lee and Sowers will likely be dealt (one this year and possible one next). Although if Lee is kept and puts up good numbers, it could be Laffey and Sowers.

That rotation is def. a dream. It is very likely that will not happen. Miller, CC, and Fausto are all ACES and Lofgren is a very good #2. That's four pitchers requiring a lot of money when the contract talks come around.

My thoughts have been that of the big three, the Tribe was the best positioned and would be the first to break through with a championship... 2008 WILL be the year. The Cleveland Indians WILL win the World Series opening the floodgates for a string of championships for Cleveland sports teams (followed by the Cavs & Browns). The "curse" will end..THIS YEAR!!!

What do you guys think was up with Travis Hafner last season? I like most of you hope it was a fluke thing and he will come back with at least 35 home runs/100+ RBI's again this season.

Also, isn't Marte out of options and if he is sent down he has to clear waivers? I was pretty excited to get him from the BoSoX and remember how mad their fans were to lose him, but for the most part he was over hyped. I hope this will end and he does what we all tht he was capable of.

A couple of things I wonder about. Has Trot Nixon or Kenny Lofton caught on anywhere? I haven't heard anything but I assumed they had to have. I really hoped they both would be back. From all I have read, Trot was a huge presence in the clubhouse. Lofton, well he proved he hasn't lost too much and he had some huge at-bats at the end of last year and into the post season. he is a huge fan favorite as well.
Losing CC worries me a tad, but at the same time teams salivate when looking at the depth we have at pitcher. I mean we have guys that can pitch at the big league lvl that we may have to have start at Buffalo. It wouldn't be so hard to just slide Carmona into the #1 role.

I hope the fans turnout in force this season right from the get-go. We started to towards the end of last season but it was somewhat embarrassing to be fighting all year for 1st and not have many sellouts. Personally I want to take my daughter Ali to a bunch of Sunday games this year. it's a good time and the Indians do a terrific job making a game pretty affordable. Unlike the Browns if I wanna take my girls to a game they are free. Can't beat that!

What do you guys think of Detroit? Are they the team to beat in the Central this year with their off-season moves? One thing I love about them is they are now "old". Their youth and farm system is depleted muhahaha, where ours seems to get younger and regenerated, woo!

I think the Tribe and Detroit battle back and forth all year and it's too early for me to make a prediction b/c the teams are very close. On paper I think Detroit has done what it needed to push them past us, but the Indians are capable of beating them out.

Several possible explanations for Hafner. I think some combination of various factors all added up.

I'll start with the biggest and to me most worrisome. Other teams game planning. There was the shift which I think started to get into his head. But on top of that teams were pitching him with pitches outside. Either on the corner or off the plate. Difficult if not impossible to pull. And when he tried to go opposite way many times he just looked silly. Hopefully he worked on this during the off season.

2nd - Maybe he hadn't fully recovered physically from that injury (wrist?). If he started the season with it not fully healed he would certainly not have rested it enough to heal during the season and may have made it worse. If this was the case it may have been the reason behind #1.

3rd - Maybe he hadn't recovered psychologically from that injury. Standing a little further off the plate. Again adding to issue #1. Time will heal these wounds as well.

4 - How much impact did the contract negotiations affect his play?

5 - Could there have been other issues which we are not privy to? Marital problems as an possible example.

i've learned not to predict, ya never know, we have the talent, but will need the breaks like we got last year, It takes alot to win , ya have to stay away from the injury bug, ya have to get most of the bounces, players need to stay away from the carrer low season, ya need to play other teams when thier down, it takes alot of luck, but one thing I do know I'll be watching and listening...GO TRIBE

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. -- A left elbow injury that required Tommy John ligament replacement surgery has proven to be a speed bump in the career of outfielder Shin-Soo Choo.
And another, more significant bump in the road might be looming in the not-too-distant future.

As an able-bodied male citizen of South Korea, Choo, who turns 26 in July, is obligated to serve between 24 and 28 months in the South Korean military before he turns 30. Such service, obviously, would put a damper on his big league dreams.

"I'm not thinking about it right now," Choo said. "But it would be tough. For two years to not play baseball, then come back, it's really tough. Pitchers? Maybe. But hitters? It's tough."

Some loopholes do exist. For one, Choo could become a U.S. citizen, though he hasn't seriously entertained that possibility yet.

Choo could also follow the path of South Korean-born ballplayers such as Chan Ho Park and Byung-Hyun Kim and receive a military exemption by helping Korea win the gold medal at the 2010 Asian Games in China.

That's easier said than done, of course. Korea won the gold medal in baseball at the 1998 and 2002 Asian Games, but Taiwan won it in 2006.

"Five or seven years ago, it was easier to win a gold medal," Choo said. "But not anymore. Taiwan and Japan have a lot of good baseball players now."

The Indians were aware of Choo's potential military obligation when they acquired him from the Mariners in 2006, and they are hoping he can avoid service.

In the meantime, Choo's more pressing concern is the left elbow ligament replacement surgery that will have him playing catch-up this season. He'll be on the club's 25-man roster once he's fully recovered, but that won't be until May, at the earliest.

Perhaps, in retrospect, Tommy John surgery was unavoidable for Choo. Position players aren't exactly prone to the type of debilitating elbow injuries that lead to the procedure. But Choo hasn't always been solely a position player.

Before beginning his professional career with the Mariners in 2001, Choo was a pitcher and an outfielder in South Korea. And he was hardly treated with the type of tender love and care that is so common for hurlers here.

"A lot of good players and top prospects in Korea signed with a professional team or went to college and couldn't play anymore," he said. "A lot of them got injured and had to have surgery. It's better there now, but there used to be a lot of injuries."

Choo said it was not atypical, in his high school career, for him to start games on back-to-back days and pitch relief on the third. He remembers his performance for the Korean Junior National Team in 2000, in the Junior AAA Championships against the USA.

"I pitched the seventh inning," he said. "In the eighth, ninth and 10th, I was in center field. And I pitched the 11th, 12th and 13th."

Talk about multitasking.

All this arm abuse began to catch up with Choo during rookie ball in '01. He had been converted strictly to outfield duty and begun to show off his prowess at the plate, but his elbow bothered him from time to time.

That trend continued for the next six years.

"My elbow would feel sore two or three times every season," Choo said.

But Choo played on. He was traded to the Tribe in July 2006, and he quickly burst onto the scene in Cleveland, batting .295 with three homers and 22 RBIs in 45 games as the regular right fielder at the end of that season.

The signing of Trot Nixon last winter bumped Choo back to Triple-A Buffalo, where the Indians wanted him to refine his performance against left-handed pitching and learn to play left field. He was on the radar and in the mix. All he needed was an opening.

That opening came in June, when David Dellucci went down with a left hamstring tear. But by that point, Choo's elbow soreness had become unbearable.

He wavered on whether he should have Tommy John surgery or rehab the problem.

"For two months, I thought, 'Surgery or not? Surgery or not?'" he said. "At the end of the season, I was still thinking about it. A month later, I had the surgery. I started thinking that if I'm playing baseball for five or 10 years, I don't want to have to worry about the elbow. I need to fix it."

Choo appears to be progressing well. Five months post-surgery, he is throwing out to 90 feet and taking soft toss in the batting cages. He should be able to serve as the designated hitter in Grapefruit League games.

The Indians believe Choo can help them, once he's healthy.

"I like the way he plays," manager Eric Wedge said. "He puts up good at-bats, and he can play well in right field or left field. He's a nice all-around player. He's still young and still has a lot to learn, but he's going to be OK."

Despite the dual distractions of surgery and conscription, Choo maintains high hopes for his career.

"I'll work hard every day," he said. "Some days it will be good, and some it will be bad. But I don't want to worry about anything. You bust your butt, and someday good things will come."
