Over the weekend my xbox decided to red ring on me, not the three red lights but one bottom right red ring. It is a problem E 74 which is a hard drive issue. I called xbox and they said my machine wasn't under warrenty anymore and it expired in Dec. I bought and registered in May. After a long argument I decided to say screw it and make it red ring so it will be covered under the 3 year warrenty. Does anyone know how to make it red ring so I can get my xbox fixed for free instead of paying $100?

All Xbox's are under a 3 year warranty, not just red ring ones. Call back and ask for a supervisor. They will fix it with out making it red ring.

Buy a PS3 instead? Will that work?
Won't have to worry about it crapping out.

I thought it was a flat 3 year extension too but it isnt. the extended 3 year plan is only for the 3 red ring od death problem. I read that wrapping it in towels will help it over heat and cause it to red ring, so I might try it.

Just got mine back..Had the 3 red rings of death...I heard wrapping the towel may help fix it...It warms the micro solder and melts it to work...But over heating should also melt it away...

It wasn't a money thing. They wanted me to pay another $375.00 to have it fixed after giving me bad advice the first time I had issues with it. Wasn't gonna support them, so I opted to get a PS3. Got one at launch (both xbox360 and PS3). I also have a Wii now, bought it before Christmas. ( friend in the gaming industry secured it for me ) I got a little money cause I'm still single without children. Doing alright this time of year as I can also do taxes.

Their custormer service was atrocious. It was right on par with Apple's phone customer support. They seriously werent even listening to me on the phone. The guy even had the nerve to tell me that Microsoft didn't have a customer support e-mail address. So while I had him on the phone I went to microsoft's website and found it for him. Truly pathetic.

I think your XBOX 360 and MS have another problem besides the "red ring of death." Sony stocks surging In wake of HD-DVD being put to death, it looks like Sony is set to surge. Sony shares surge on HD DVD demise Blu-ray makers stock sees boost following Toshiba's back out of format war; analysts peg PS3 as new format war winner. By Emma Boyes, GameSpot UK Posted Feb 19, 2008 6:19 pm PT Sony's shares gained nearly five percent today on news that Toshiba will be bowing out of the latest movie format wars, reports Reuters. The announcement that it will cease production of HD DVD players before the end of April leaves Blu-ray, which is integrated into the PlayStation 3 console, as the victorious format. Sony's stock in the US hit a high of $47.07 in early trade on the New York Stock Exchange, before dropping slightly to $46.96, up $2.18 or 4.87 percent from Friday's close. Analysts were in agreement that the demise of HD DVD was a boon for Sony and could ultimately be bad news for Microsoft's console. William Blair & Company analyst Ralph Shackart said that, "We believe Blu-ray's victory could drive market share gains for the PS3, as we believe consumers will now be more willing to pay up (versus 360) for the standard Blu-ray player." Wedbush Morgan Securities' Michael Pachter told GameSpot that he agreed. He said, "Educated consumers who have been holding off buying on the format war to make a decision will now probably buy a PS3. Uneducated consumers who have no idea that there was a format war are likely to get pushed to buy a PS3 by sales clerks. Retail sales clerks being what they are, they are now really, really going to push sales of Blu-ray, and therefore the PS3." Pachter believes that by the end of this year's holiday season, the PS3 is likely to now emerge victorious in the console war. He told GameSpot, "The real problem for the 360 is that very few people will buy a 360 and a PS3. So therefore, every PS3 sale will likely mean that person won't buy a 360, so this news will ultimately hurt 360 sales. But I don't think it will hurt the Wii. If I had to bet, I'd say Microsoft gets no more than 30 percent of the total install base, and Sony and Microsoft slug it out, and Sony will ultimately prevail."

Well, IMO Microsoft will release the Xbox 720 (or what ever it will be called) in the next 3 years and it will have a larger Processor, 1GB RAM and Blu-ray standard which will put pressure on Sony to make a PS4 before they want to.

If I recall correctly, Sony pushed back the release of the ps3 another 6 months even after the 360 had already for 6 months. At least in the case of the PS3, they put it out when they were good and ready, and the strategy appears to have worked.

Your right but the PS3 was't even ready when they released it a year after the 360. Crappy launch games except for Ressistance, dev kits that made a lot of developers mad. But Sony couldn't let the 360 get even farther ahead and it cost them in the first year.
It may be looking good now but Sony had a lot of trouble getting things going. Too expensive for most with a Launch $600 price tag that cost them $875 to make so they were losing $375 per unit. Then they weren't selling so they couldn't keep up the loss so they redisigned the unit for the European release last March to make it cheaper (took out PS2 hardware and replaced it with software emulation).
Then it still wasn't selling so they had a price cut (to $500) in July. Sales spiked for a little while but it didn't last. Then they came out with the 80GB in August but bumped the price up to $600 again but bundled a game.
Still wasn't selling good so they again redisigned the sku came out with a 40GB version taking out all backwards compatability on PS2 games, card readers and taking out 2 of the 4 usb ports and droping the price to $400 and droped the current 80GB to $500.
On top of all that most of the Franchise games are not even out yet (FF13, Metal Gear Solid 4, Socom 4)
The only reason Blu ray won was becasue it's in every PS3. 10 million PS3's sold so for and ~560,000 Blu ray standalone = ~10,560,000 Blu ray players in homes.
Compared to ~750,000 HD-DVD players total (Standalones + 360 add-on)
If the 360 had included an HD-DVD drive with every 360, it would have won IMO.
Sony talks about the PS3 being a 10 year machine, just wait if the "720" comes out in 2011, the PS4 will be out in 2012 before it is ready.

No doubt. The first lady who I talked to tried telling me 75% of $375 was 20 bucks. I quickly asked for her supervisor and it only got worse. He told me his phone doesn't transfer calls. I asked him how I was transfered to him then, and he didn't know. I had previously dealt with their email support staff who compounded my problems with the 360.
Their advice for overheating was to just unplug the unit for 15 minutes and it will be fine. They also told me nobody else was having the issues I was, and therefore couldn't be fixed, which was a lie. So for my warranty period, all I could do was unplug the unit for 15 minutes. After about 3-4 months, it permanently unplugged itself with the rings of death.
I told phone support I still have the email, and did up to a few weeks ago.

Yeah it is, please tell me... Andra started a topic with a question Xbox 360. Don't see what the PS3 has to do with it.
And I guess I was the only one who had good customer support.

It's called competition. This is a public forum and people have different idea's about different products. The 360 has a terrible design that causes too much heat inside and the solder they use, melts at a pretty low tempature.
So obviously people are going to come in and say buy a PS3 because it has a better design when it comes to reliability.
It's not rocket science. That's why you see Steeler, Bengal and Raven fans on this Cleveland Browns forum.

There was one half-decent representative I got to talk to, after calling back 4 times. He couldn't help though because dumb and dumber had already made notes on my account, or so he said.

Because I added something to the thread, and the topic changed.
That's good enough.

Another problem I had was that they told me my warrenty expired in Dec, when I bought the thing in Late May. I registered it and everything but they told me the warrenty started in January when the retailer bought it. Now unless I have my receipt that I cant seem to find, I have to pay for the fix unless I make it red ring of death on me. Thus now I am keeping it on at all times wrapped in towels in hopes that it will. Thats how the whole thing started. According to my problem that it says an e74 error, it is a problem with the harddrive. Now you would think that with the harddrive out of the machine the problem would go away. I plugged my harddrive into another 360 and it works fine. Thus I am fairly sure it isnt the harddrive causing the issue.

You fail to see what I've been implying. They don't come in and hijack a topic turning it into a discussion about what the Steelers are doing in free agency.
