Sources: Cavs get Wallace from Bulls, Szczerbiak from Sonics
By Marc Stein
Updated: February 21, 2008, 4:22 PM ET

The Cleveland Cavaliers appear to have beaten the NBA's annual trade buzzer to get LeBron James some of the fresh help he's been openly craving.

In a three-way, 11-player trade with Chicago and Seattle that has been submitted for league approval, NBA front-office sources say that Cleveland will come away with four new teammates for James, headlined by Ben Wallace from the Bulls and sharpshooter Wally Szczerbiak from the Sonics.

The league office was notified of the deal before Thursday's 3 p.m. ET trading deadline, sources said, and is currently reviewing the trade details as required for formal approval.

After Cleveland watched two longstanding trade targets land elsewhere -- Mike Bibby in Atlanta and Jason Kidd in Dallas -- sources say that the deal calls for the Cavaliers to receive Wallace, Szczerbiak, Seattle point guard Delonte West, Chicago's Joe Smith and a future second-round pick from the Bulls.

The Bulls, apparently abandoning their gamble on Wallace less than two seasons into the lucrative four-year deal they used to sign him away from Detroit, would get Cavaliers forward Drew Gooden and swingman Larry Hughes along with Cavs reserves Cedric Simmons and Shannon Brown.

The Sonics, shedding Szczerbiak in the name of additional payroll flexibility, come away with the expiring contracts of Cleveland's Ira Newble and Chicago's Adrian Griffin as well as Cavs veteran Donyell Marshall.

Plus Damon Jones' contract expires at the end of this year as well...and we got another pick from Chicago.

Right ... Wallace's contract pretty much replaced Hughes in the "bad contract" category, so no real foul there. Trading for Ben and not giving up Hughes would of been stupid, but this makes it reasonable.

Trading Marshall, Newble and Simmons doesn't really "help" per-say. Newble and Simmon's contracts were expiring at the end of this year ... we just kind of parlayed those contracts into Wally Z's contract, which is 12.5 million and expiring next year. That's probably actually a good thing. Rather than having a week 4 million off the cap this year, which wouldn't allow us to do much of anything ... we get even more money in expiring contracts for NEXT year. Which means we'll have a lot of trade options this time next year.

Joe Smith also has a 5.2 million dollar contract that expires next year. That gives us over $33 million in expiring contracts to play with next year.

West only makes 1.5 million, and it expires this year. So if he pans out real well, we'll have the whole issue of trying to resign him with no cap space.

Yeah, addin Wally's expiring contract to Eric Snow 6.7 million and Damon Jones 4.2 million.

That makes a lot of room for trades next year.

I love this deal!!! I have maintained all along that we needed to get tougher inside. Well there isnt much tougher inside than Big Ben. I like Ben at PF and Z at center, with Andy rotating in and getting them rest.

I dont know much about Delonte West but I have heard the Cavs have been trying to get him for awhile. Him and Boobie will rotate at PG, and Lebron,Wally World, and Sasha a can play the 2 guard and the SF spot so that gives us some flex there.

Nice move D Ferry.

WOW! I didn't think it could be done!

Even if this doesn't make us better this year (but I think it does, slightly), we've managed to get a HUGE (Hughes) albatross off from around our necks.

So, even if we don't go very far this year into the playoffs, it makes it easier for us to do what we need to do in the off-season to finally get the players in here we need.

It's a step in the right direction.

I'm talking myself into this deal the more I think about it. The fact that we unloaded Hughes to get Big Ben, makes things a lot better. We DIDN'T screw ourselves over in the long term, and we probably helped ourselves a bit by getting more expiring contract money for next season, plus a 2nd round pick. (Face it, we do better in the second round anyway!! ... Boozer, Varejao, Gibson)

I broke it down earlier ... but this kind of breaks down to Wally for Donyell ... which is an upgrade, both player-wise and "contract-ually".

Then it's Big Ben and West for Gooden and Hughes. Which combo is better? I think it all boils down to how West plays. Contract-wise, Hughes and Ben are a wash. If West can generate enough offense to replace the output of Hughes and Gooden, then this will be a great deal.

Simmons for Smith is a wash too ... although we give up Simmon's expiring contract for a bigger expiring contract next year.

Not really ... Wallace's contract is just as big of an albatross as Hughes was. We do get more expiring money in contracts though for next year from the other pieces of the deal, so we'll be a major player at next year's deadline.

While the contracts are the same I just thing Wallace is a much better fit for this team. Hughes is a individual type player, his style just didnt fit on a team with a player like Lebron. Wallace hovering around the board doing the dirty work excites me. Also Wally is also a much more consistent shooter than Hughes and will fit better working with LBJ.

I wanted Ben when he went from Detroit to Chicago!

Hughes is just to injury prone - I didn't think we'd be able to move him. And now I know why Ira's been playing so much lately. lol

As far as Marshall - he contributed nothing to this team.

The only player I'll miss is Drew - I know he was Mr. Inconsistent, but I kinda liked the guy.

go cavs!

A change was needed. If nothing else to show LeBron they are trying here. To watch Kidd and Bibby go, you know LeBron could not have been happy about that.

Hopefully the trade gets us to the next level. If not, LeBron knows they tried.

But at least we'll be getting a better return on our investment with Wallace. He's not worth his contract, but Hughes didn't/couldn't provide anything he was signed to do. Ben is paid to defend and rebound. He'll do that. Hughes wasn't doing anything.

i think i'm ok with this...

i love th financial shape we put ourselves in for next year

wallace is a one dimensional player, but if he can get motivated, he can give us what we need down low...

delonte west can handle the ball, he can shoot, he's willing to defend, and we'll have the chance to sign him this year

i think we're a little bit deeper, even though that may seem weird, considering we gave up more players than we got back, but i'm talking about quality here...

but we did add 3 things that we've needed, a point guard, an oustide shooter, and toughness under the basket...

and we didn't have to give up boobie, and we've dumped some guys making big money who weren't doing jack, wally may not be the best all around guy, but you know what you'll get from him

hopefully these guys can get their physicals, and their flights to cleveland asap, because we'll need them friday night against washington, that should be a fun scene...

i do want to admit that just a small, small part of me was sad to see larry hughes go, i really pulled for the guy, because he seemed like one of the better people in the game, and it seemed like he was finally getting comfortable, but when you look at his stay as a whole, he never lived up to expectations, but the best of luck to him, and drew gooden too, those guys were nothing but class during their stay

and also, what happens to the guy with the larry hughes website?

Cavs End Trade Deadline With Bang
By TOM WITHERS,AP
Posted: 2008-02-21 17:06:57
CLEVELAND (Feb. 21) - LeBron James finally got some help to win an NBA title.

In a blockbuster, three-way trade involving Cleveland, Chicago, Seattle and including 11 players, the Cavaliers acquired center Ben Wallace from the Bulls and forward Wally Szczerbiak from the SuperSonics, two players to possibly get James and the Cavs through the Eastern Conference and back to the finals.

Cleveland general manager Danny Ferry, unable to finalize major deals in the past, pulled off a colossal one in the final hours before Thursday's 3 p.m. deadline.

The Cavaliers sent guard Larry Hughes, forwards Drew Gooden and Cedric Simmons, and guard Shannon Brown to Chicago for Wallace, one of the game's top inside enforcers, and forward Joe Smith.

Cleveland acquired the sharpshooting Szczerbiak and guard Delonte West from Seattle for forwards Ira Newble and Donyell Marshall.

The Cavaliers will also get Chicago's second-round pick in 2009. The SuperSonics will receive guard Adrian Griffin from the Bulls.

The deal caps a busy month of trades around the NBA as several stars, including Shaquille O'Neal, Jason Kidd, Shawn Marion and Pau Gasol all were dealt to new teams. The Gasol swap triggered an arms race of sorts among the Western Conference's top squads, while this one could have a big impact at the top of the East.

Plagued by injuries this season, the Cavaliers are nine games behind Detroit in the Central Division and are fourth overall behind Boston, the Pistons and Orlando in the conference standings.

James, who is having an MVP-caliber season, had hoped Ferry could pull the trigger on a deal as the deadline neared. But Cleveland's superstar probably couldn't have imagined such an overhaul.

I think we see him in the same roll as Donyell Marshall ... except Wally will probably hit his wide open shots.

Our lineups don't look too shabby either now ...

Starting would probably be:
C: Z
PF: Ben Wallace
SF: LeBron
SG: Gibson
PG: West

Bench is also pretty solid now with:
C: Andy
PF: Smith
SF: Wally
SG: Sasha
PG: Snow

The defensive lineup is downright scary down low:
C: Wallace
PF: Andy
SF: Lebron
SG: Sasha
PG: Snow

The offensive set is decent as well if we need shooting:
C: Z
PF: Wally
SF: Lebron
SG: Gibson
PG: West or Damon

King...I watched Delonte a lot last year, as a C's fan, AND watched a ton of him at St. Joes with Jameer Nelson cuz they were always on tv, and was very sad to see him go.

He's a very very good PG. He can also play the wing and play it very effectively. So he can help you guys in several ways.

Delonte can start at the point and if you need D you can put Boobie on the bench and West can play the wing and lock down the 2 man on D.

For the C's he averaged about 17 and 4 dimes a game. He's going to be very good for a while. He's still real young. Delonte is/was a huge underrated pickup. He didnt fit in Seattle because of the logjam at point they already had with Ridnour and someone else i forgot who. But, he got shuffled out of the mix because of Ridnour and the other guy.

I think he's better than both of them though.

Cavaliers get:
Bulls F/C Ben Wallace
Bulls F Joe Smith
Bulls 2009 2nd-round pick
Sonics F Wally Szczerbiak
Sonics G Delonte West

Bulls get:
Cavaliers F Drew Gooden
Cavaliers G Larry Hughes
Cavaliers F Cedric Simmons
Cavaliers G Shannon Brown

Sonics get:
Cavaliers F Ira Newble
Cavaliers F Donyell Marshall
Bulls F Adrian Griffin

WOW!!!! I'm reading this right.... (pinches self) WOW!!!! Now the pressure is on to get back to the Finals and with this trade the cap room and such we just cleared up it suddenly looks a lot more likely we might actually be able to push Detroit and Boston in the East this year.

I think they wanted to unload Wallace at any cost. Him and the coach didn't get along. I'm sure they felt the same way about him as we did about Larry Hughes ... and I think they realized the only way they'd get rid of a contract like that was to trade it for an equally bad contract, and hope the change of scenery helps Hughes. They didn't give up a whole lot after that. Joe Smith is your average solid bench guy. Gooden will provide them some low post offense, but I think this was more of an addition by subtraction for them.

i'm actually surprised they didn't gut that roster more...

the general consensus on the bulls is that:

ben gordon is overrated

luol deng is not a #1, he's a complimentary piece to a better player (ie; had they been able to get kobe and keep deng, then you see how good deng is)

kirk hinrich just isn't the guy to run the point (he's an overachiever, and probably better suited for the bench)

tyrus thomas is a 2 year project

it's funny, that john paxson looked like a genius 3 years ago, and now? he looks like an idiot...

and as far as wallace goes, he and skiles did not see eye to eye, they never got along, not from the start, which is probably good news for us, that he's not as bad as he's been over the last season and a half

i think wallace will be much better, he'll move down to the 4, he'll be playing in a better backcourt, and i think mike brown is a good coach for him

also, we get a guy who isn't going to let the tony parkers of the world just drive to the basket like he did in the finals, wallace will send that message early and often

also, because i'm a hockey player, i have to bring the enforcer thing in, you mess with lebron, you'll be messing with wallace, he will not take any crap from anyone

also, if you think about it, wallace is somewhat of an insurance policy should we not be able to re-sign andy next year

and wow, should the cavs and pistons meet in the playoffs, you now have this aspect to look at...

i like it, although i'm worried about our backcourt defense, but i love that we actually bettered ourselves for next year...

33.7 in expiring deals (one of those is andy, which we all want him back)

but aside from that, we have guys who will all be off the books, we could literally bring in a superstar and still have expiring deals left over to get the cap relief to sign another guy in the offseason...

the cavs are in great shape for the future... unbelievable shape

Thats is awesome to hear. He sounds like the type of player Mike Brown loves. This trade realy excites me. The Cavs dumped some serious dead weight in Hughes and Marshall and got some players who fit what coach Browns wants to do.

Yeah this really is just great. I am so pumped to see this come together if everyone can get healthy the only thing we lose, and you touched on it, is Larrys ability to defend the perimeter.

Wow! I competely forgot about that angle, and you're totally right. Jordan had Oakley, and most good teams always had/have some sort of enforcer. I've been saying we need a guy like that for awhile now. Andy sort of filled in the role the last year or so, but he's a cream puff compared to Wallace!

I like Gooden also but he is just not what we needed inside. Gooden is a finesse player, we need bangers, especially considering that Z is a finesse center.

The biggest thing here is DEPTH. We traded 4 players, 2 of which didn't contribute JACK to our team, for 4 players who will all see significant playing time. Our rotation went from 7 players to 9. That's what will win us games in the playoffs. Having the added veteran players who can all give us quality minutes.

Joe Smith is having a great season this year off the bench. He may be the afterthought in this trade for a lot of people but he is playing some really good basketball. I've been watching the Bulls a lot (as the Cavs are never on here in Chicago) and I was really excited to see him "thrown in" to the deal.

Smith has averaged 13 points and 6 rebounds in January and 17 points and 7 rebounds in February. He's been incredibly, incredibly tough as of late. He'll give us front court scoring off the bench, something we really have never had with LBJ.
