I'm happy for Jamal, and I'm happy we have a front office that rewards good players. Sets an excellent precedent for others who think they can prove themselves and were maybe "held back" by other teams. He came here on a 1 year deal to do just that. He walked the walked, and was rewarded with probably his last big contract of his career. Good for everyone, really.

Actually, i care about the money (and thankfully its the browns too spend ) I think the cap is the game within the game and an informed fan has the right to know where/how the money is spent. Afterall, we are the ones buying the tickets and purchasing the jerseys and other merchandise. So with that said, have the terms of the deal been released?????? I haven't found them yet???

3 more seasons of the "Bell Cow!!"
Awesome job by Phil and should ensure us continued success on offense... Now let's snag a few defensive players and get this baby playoff bound!

Just saw this on Yahoo sports from PD.. Remember article is by MK so don't take it to serious... LOL If the numbers are correct I think the Browns made a great deal, and JL should be a solid if not great contributor to the Browns... Well done PS, and JL... Quote:
Indianapolis - Browns running back Jamal Lewis wants to finish his career in Cleveland. Now he'll have a chance to do just that. Lewis, 28, agreed Thursday to a three-year contract through 2010, the Browns announced. It is believed to be worth $17 million. Lewis made $5 million last season, including $1.5 million in incentives.
Lewis, who was set to become a free agent Feb. 29, was expected to fly to Indianapolis Thursday night or Friday morning to meet with his agent, Mitch Frankel, and sign the deal. Frankel was en route from California and expected to arrive in Indy at about 11 p.m. Thursday night.
Browns officials are in Indianapolis for the Scouting Combine, which runs through Tuesday. If all goes as planned, Lewis will join Browns General Manager Phil Savage and coach Romeo Crennel during their previously scheduled press conferences Friday afternoon.
"I am thankful to the Browns for the opportunity they gave me last year to come out and prove that I was still one of the top running backs in the NFL," said Lewis in a statement. "I feel the future is extremely bright for this team and I'm excited to be a part of it for another three years. I said all year long that I wanted to get a long-term deal done to stay in Cleveland and it looks like with this new contract I'll be able to finish my career as a Brown."

Who's the happy Brownie? Is it Jammin' Jammy Lewis? Glad he is aboard. We need to use him sensibly. Hope the bill isn't too outrageous. Knew we could find a replacement for Ben Gay if we searched hard enuff . . . . Good luck, big man!

Man... I totally must have skipped right over that...
how can anyone think that a WR is 'the missing' piece on this team?? Our passing production last year was phenomenal... and we had a horrific defense for half the year and a subpar one for the rest of the year...
we need defensive help... doesn't matter where it comes from... but listening to Savage you know his focus is on 1. Lewis (done) 2. DA and 3. Defense, defense, defense.

Lewis guaranteed $6-7 million in new deal with Cleveland Browns Posted by Mary Kay Cabot, Plain Dealer Reporter February 22, 2008 14:17PM
INDIANAPOLIS -- The three-year contract for Browns running back Jamal Lewis includes guaranteed money of between $6 and $7 million, a source at the NFL Combine said. The total value of the deal is about $17 million. Lewis will speak to the media later this afternoon.
Also, the Browns have no immediate plans to meet again with Derek Anderson's representatives at the Combine. The two sides remains a ways apart on the money. The Browns are offering a three-year deal in about the $18 million range. Anderson's camp is focusing on two alternatives: a six-year deal and a three-year deal. Their proposal on the three-year deal is significantly higher than the Browns.
But the two sides have until next Thursday to reach an agreement before Anderson becomes a restricted free agent.
I AM ALWAYS RIGHT... except when I am wrong.

ABOUT THE BROWNS . . . The Browns got a tremendous bargain in Jamal Lewis when he signed a deal that paid him slightly less than $5 million last season as he gained 1,304 yards, seventh best in franchise history. Of course, Jim Brown never had a 16-game season. That's why they gave Lewis a three-year deal worth a maximum of $17 million. Remember this about NFL contracts, none are fully guaranteed. Lewis' deal is worth about $6.5 million in 2008, which is the franchise tag for a running back. The guaranteed part of the deal is about $8 million. He receives about $6 million in 2009, and his 2010 salary (slightly less than $5 million) is not guaranteed. So this really is a two-year deal that looks like three. It also makes sense for the team and the player. The Browns asked themselves, "Does Lewis have one very good year, and another pretty good one left?" They believe that at the age of 28 and given his dedication to fitness and conditioning, he does. They also asked, "Where else can we find a 1,000-yard rusher?" They considered how Lewis has the respect of young players such as Kellen Winslow and Braylon Edwards. By giving Lewis a multiyear deal that he wanted, it sends a message that they are committed to him and they appreciate how he has supported the coaches and worked with other players. Lewis wanted to stay because: 1. He respects coach Romeo Crennel and GM Phil Savage. 2. The offensive line is excellent. 3. The team has an offensive coordinator (Rob Chudzinski) who uses him in the passing game. 4. The Browns have two quarterbacks who can throw downfield, meaning defenses can't load up on the line of scrimmage to stop the run. The Browns also talk about the physical style of Lewis' play, and how he loves games against Baltimore, Cincinnati and Pittsburgh. He is the kind of leader they wish they had on defense. They think D'Qwell Jackson could possibly develop into that player, but he's only entering his third season. Andra Davis has the respect of players and coaches, but he only is on the field for about 50 percent of the plays. http://blog.cleveland.com/sports/2008/02/terry_pluto_terrys_talkin_8.html

It would appear that JL and PS where true to their word. If this article is to be believed the Browns have signed JL for 2 years with a optional 3rd year, as there are no guarantees for the 3rd year.. JL was serious when he said he wanted to return to the Browns and by all appearances gave the Browns the home team discount by basicly forgoing any guarantee for a 3rd year.. Nice From SI:: Quote:
News: Jamal Lewis re-ups with the Browns.
Views: Kind of makes one wonder how much interest the big running back generated in the free-agent market.
Was this signing easier than expected? Or is Lewis one of those athletes who means what he says? After this past season, when he proved most pro football experts wrong with a terrific season, he said he would love to return to the Browns. Some thought it was lip service.
Guess not.
Leading the cheering was offensive coordinator Rob Chudzinski, who realizes how much of an impact Lewis had on his schemes. Because the big guy this past season came close to duplicating his spectacular seasons in Baltimore, opposing defenses no longer could keep both safeties back in the dreaded Cover 2.
Helped immensely by the outstanding work of the revamped offensive line, Lewis was the perfect complement to Anderson. Teams had to pick their poison with the Cleveland offense: Lewis on the ground or Anderson through the air.
Stop one, but rarely stop both. All you have to do is look at how Lewis’ numbers in the second half of the season, especially the final month, improved as Anderson’s leveled off.
Now, all Savage has to do to complete the daily double is sign Anderson then get to work fixing the defense.

Have you guys ever wondered what motivates a reporter to start a story with what really amounts to a negative comment about the player?
I mean, this is a feel good story.. 2000 yard rusher, leads team to Superbowl, has brush with the law, goes to jail, gets banged up and is basically cast off by his old team, comes to new team and leads them to the Brink of the playoffs in his first year and runs for 1300 yards and is a team leader and inspiration in the locker room as well as on the field...
and the best this reporter can open up with is " how much interest the big running back generated in the free-agent market"!
Is it me, or is does it always have to happen that these reporters have to stir the pot..
And yes, I do understand that the rest of the article is pretty nice and positive and I'm glad of that.. for sure.. But geez!

LEWIS GOT $10 MILLION GUARANTEED
It has been reported that the contract signed last week by Browns running back Jamal Lewis has guaranteed money in the neighborhood of $6 million to $7 million. Per a source with knowledge of the deal, however, the practical guarantee is $10 million.
Lewis will be paid a total of $6.5 million in the first year of the deal. In 2009, he's due to receive a total of $3.5 million in guaranteed money.
Given that it's extremely unlikely that Lewis will be cut before the end of the 2008 season, his total take in 2008 is essentially guaranteed.
Per NFLPA records, Lewis has base salaries of $1.4 million in 2008, $2.4 million in 2009, and $2.4 million in 2010.
The total magnitude of the deal and the timing of its negotiation suggests that the Browns might have used the franchise tag on Lewis if the contract hadn't been worked out when it was. For running backs, the one-year salary commitment would have been $6.85 million. The two sides then would have had until July 15 to work out a multi-year contract.
Per the site that nobody gives any credit to, unless the news happens to be in the Browns favor

One might say that JL's numbers went up because the Defense was playing back to prevent the deep ball from DA....because they knew he couldn't complete the short and intermediate stuff.

Exactly.
Cannot complain about a QB that gets enough respect from opposing defenses to help open up our running game.

Just exactly how was I "bad-mouthing" anyone? I just presented an opposing way of looking at the statement that Shark made. At no time did I disparage Anderson. I only pointed out that one man's diamond could be another man's cubic zirconium, so to speak.

I think it is pretty obvious. No one would be dumb enough to believe that Lewis gained more yards because teams "played back" because DA couldn't complete short passes. No one!
There is only ONE reason teams would "play back." They fear getting burned.
And I didn't get on you. I was just informing Shark that he may not have read your entire sentence all that closely.

So you're saying the Defenses playing back had no effect on Lewis's increased production?

If you can sell that cubic zirconium at a diamond's price...does it really matter what the material is?
Point is, whether it's DA's ability to stretch the field or his "inability to make the short pass", his contribution to the offense, direct or indirect as in this case, cannot be ignored.
Some do see there is a coincidence - the decrease in the passing game with the increase in the rushing facet.
Vers:
I did read the full comment and found it humorous that the "alternative" view still complimented DA's performance.

This might be one of the finest posts I've read on this board since joining.
It sums up Jamal's situtation (and the Browns situation regarding him...) quite nicely. A win-win.... with a "bonus win" thrown in for good measure:
Jamal got paid, Cleveland gets proven production -at a price they can afford to pay, ...and the Browns get the word out: "You show you can play- we'll show we can pay."
Don't think that other potential FA's don't see this kinda stuff. They do- and that bodes well for us down the road... with FA's from outside, and former rookies we have signed whose contracts are coming to term.
Jamal lewis earned EVERY SINGLE DIME he got from the Cleveland Browns... and I am thankful that he'll earn even more dimes in a brown and orange uni next year.

If you can sell that cubic zirconium at a diamond's price...does it really matter what the material is? It does to the person buying the zircon...... What evidently went right over Vers' head was the point I was making. That is that two people can look at the same event and interpret it two different ways. That doesn't change the event. It just changes the perception. What some people seem to forget is that just because they see something one way doesn't mean we all see it that way. Or that either way is necessarily the "right" way. Or the "wrong" one. In the end I believe both DA and JL will be Browns in 2008. That is a good thing. I doubt that both will be Browns in 2009. Only time will tell if that is a good thing.
