That's funny. For someone who has no clue [that's an insult, btw]....Diam sure did a lot better job of explaining why they weren't signing him to trade him than those who believed the opposite. In fact, I really haven't seen a good explanation from the other side. Can you "clue" us in and give one?

It really makes no sense to sign DA and then trade him this year. If we want to get rid of him we should just tender him and hope someone bites on the first and third. Then, even if no one bites we can still trade him for less than a 1st and 3rd without taking the signing bonus hit and let the other team negotiate their own contract with DA.
Signing him and then trading him makes no sense. We'd take a cap hit on the bonus and the other team wouldn't be able to negotiate their own contract with DA.
The only way I would see a sign and trade with DA this year is if we want more than 1st and 3rd for DA, which I can't imagine happening.

February 26, 2008 Late optimism in Anderson talks In a late push to convince Derek Anderson to sign a multi-year extension, the Cleveland Browns recently upped their offer to three years worth $20 million with $10 million guaranteed, a source told The Dispatch. A second source added there is late optimism that Anderson and the Browns could come to terms in the next day or so. The Browns have until Thursday afternoon to tender restricted free agents, and it will be Anderson’s decision to accept Cleveland’s three-year offer or take the highest one-year tender worth $2.562 million. The tender would require teams to give up a first- and third-round draft pick to sign Anderson, and there is speculation around the league that there aren’t many suitors for that high a price, which could work in the Browns’ favor. The Dispatch reported earlier this month that Anderson balked at Cleveland’s initial three-year offer worth $16 million and $11 million guaranteed. If no team has interest in giving up draft picks, Anderson would risk leaving as much as $17 million on the table by not accepting the Browns’ latest pitch. jwalker@dispatch.comhttp://blog.dispatch.com/jwalker_browns/

I'd be shocked if he signs. Why even bother when he can hit the restricted market and see if anyone out there will bite on him, thus giving him big money?
While he can't know what his true market value is, since that would mean being a true unrestricted free agent, his agents know there's some interest out there. Forget the tampering rules, and just accept the reality that his agent has been in contact with people during this period. Does that mean they know a team is going to offer the Browns a trade offer, or be willing to meet the 1st and 3rd price? No, it doesn't. What all this means is that it doesn't hurt a thing if they say no, guage the market, then accept the Browns offer later.
Now, had the Browns said "you have 48 hours to accept this deal or it's off the table" we'd be talking about a completely different ballgame, but that would be an idiotic move by the Browns, and simply won't happen.
So where are we? We're moving along just as we should.
Several months ago I thought the Browns would simply slap the tag on Anderson and be done with it. They've surprised me by offering a decent contract, but in the end, it looks like the tag is how this is going to play out, at least for the time being. It'll still come down to Anderson's agents whispering into his ear about a gamble: Take the good deal now, or gamble on you getting better, becoming a star, and taking the amazing deal in a year or two. The X-factor is some team signing him to an offer sheet.
Moving right along.........

I think the more likely scenario is the one that Phil and RAC have been talking about all along. They want to keep DA on the team and prolong making a decision on who to keep and who to let go for as long as possible. It's smart and I don't understand why it is so hard for some to comprehend.
I have a problem with this scenario (not because of you Vers) the problem lies in the fact that this is the Cleveland Browns we are talking about. We have had so many QB controversies on this team for so long that sometime soon this position needs to be stable so we can move forward. As long as DA and BQ are both on this team there will be no stability at that position.
Next is the fact that Quinn was drafted as part of a plan and untill he is the starter-leader of this team, the plan is being postponed to a later date. I honestly liked the fact that he got to sit and watch this past season. It was good for him. But sitting and watching from this point forward will serve no good purpose for him or any future plans for him on this team. He has to get his feet wet because he is at a point that he needs hands on experiance to move forward.
So my opinion is that one or the other, DA or BQ, need to move on now. This is the best thing for the Browns and which ever one of them is the future. Now if you feel it will be better for our starter to be looking over his shoulder for the next year or two then we should keep both.
Just wait till next season, I have heard that for over 40 years!

I hope you're well, Corpus. I rarely agree with your positions, and often find many of the things you say to be insufferable, but I still hope you're well.
I can't begin to rationalize the logic behind the statement you just made. In short, you're quite clearly stating that because we've had a problem at the position for so long, we must make a decision NOW because our problem is itself insufferable.

To suggest that having Anderson and Quinn on the same team creates a situation where neither QB can operate, and therefore the very act of delaying a decision dooms the team to failure, is either one of two things: A method to forward your own desire for your choice of a QB in a forum of public debate, or a form of flawed logic that has failed to see the real and ultimate goal of the problem.
I'm going to choose to believe the latter
Truth be told, the very situation that you're pointing to as a harbinger of doom existed at the beginning of the 2007 season, and worked itself out quite well. The end result of a QB situation that had gone so horribly bad as to have our starter sent packing after the very first regular season game was that Derek Anderson came out of nowhere and had a solid season.
In short, to quote the brilliant (if extremely eccentric) Nietzsche, out of chaos came order.
In essence, you're now saying that what we JUST DID this past season cannot be done, and is a sure recipe for failure.

Quote:
Now if you feel it will be better for our starter to be looking over his shoulder for the next year or two then we should keep both.
There's the crux of your arguement. You're afraid that Anderson is looking over his shoulder, and therefore can't produce......or vice-versa. In Anderson's case, he played last year allready looking over his shoulder at Quinn, and in fact, was looking in front of him at Frye. The simple fact is that he played well despite facing a situation that was far more dire for him and the organization than the one they now face. Therefore, your logic is flawed as it pertains to this specific case.
I think that the most ironic part of your post is that you're fearing the fates because of our past as the Browns, yet it's the Browns as a team in this current state and situation that makes you're fears unfounded.
Anderson has allready beaten the situation you most fear. Letting these two QB's work hard and compete for the job is good for their growth, and is ultimately a good problem to have for the team. These are two legit prospects, not Kelly Holcomb and Tim Couch.

First off... PEEN...........Giving Anderson ANY type of Signing Bonus and trading him IS NOT GONNA HAPPEN...I don't care if it's a lousy 3M...WE WILL NOT make that type of deal and take an accelerated cap hit by trading him...NO SENSE... TOAD...This is getting interesting...And as much as I would love the picks...I'm in the field of not really caring if Anderson is here or not in 2008...Not with a Bonafide Option here in Quinn... Here's a name...BRIAN GRIESE...Bears are gonna release him...IF Anderson goes...Griese is a solid #2 option here... Quote:
his agent has been in contact with people during this period
U know it...Makes me wonder if he's not liking what he heard...Therefore the "Getting Closer" thing that's popped up the last couple days...
One thing is now GUARANTEED...By Midday Thursday Anderson will have either SIGNED the 3 year deal or he's Tendered...That much we know...It wouldn't surprise me if he does sign...If he doesn't sign...That opens the door to what could be talks that have already transpired between agent and other teams...That tells me their IS INTEREST elsewhere...
Keep in mind folks...If Anderson is TENDERED...He DOES NOT need to SIGN it for quite sometime...
If the 3 year deal IS SIGNED...That tells me agent was not optimistic about the interest showed...Take the $$$ and run...FOR NOW...
Go Browns!!!

I have to agree with the IDEA that it's not a sign and trade deal. I honestly believe myself, and have heard PS express the same idea, that it's best for the Browns to go forward with both QB's. He doesn't have to say anything if his intentions are otherwise. In a round about way he is letting DA's people and everybody else know what he is actually thinking. From where I sit he is saying he wants to sign DA and go forward thru at least next season with DA, and BQ. But I think if things work out as the Browns hope a trade will be made, just not this season.
The only other thing that I think would get PS to change his mind is a 1 and 3, and that aint going to happen.
If I was to take a bet at this moment as to what will happen it would be that at some point DA will be signed in the next 24 hrs or not at all perhaps. DA's people have a pretty good handle on DA's worth on the open market at this point. The only question remaining is will he get a better deal a year from now, or is it best for him to sign now with the Browns ??
I think his signing or not signing will send a real strong signal to everyone as to where other teams place DA's value.. From what I have read they aren't all that high on DA. And let me add, I think DA did great for a 1st year starter, but he could of and probably should have done better. If I am running a team, I wouldn't risk the future on DA at this point, he would have to be a lot better then he showed to close the season for me to do that..

I don't think it is going to happen. I don't think I ever said that. All I am saying is I don't think it makes zero sense. Unconventional?? Sure.
I suppose it gets back to a question I asked earlier....do you think Savage would buy a draft pick?? Seeing we have some room and are probably going to have some money left under the cap when all of this is said and done, I don't think it as far fetched as others.
I do agree with something Vers said....there is nothing that says we even want to trade the guy. It may be we want to sign the guy.
Phil could be banking on one of 2 things.
First, he has DA'a numbers set where he really thinks they should be and hopes the 2 pick premium will scare off teams.....or, he has them set at the low end so some team comes in with a offer we can match. Why set the market?? The low end has bearing on where the top end finishes.
I will admit most of my thinking is from the standpoint of the Browns. From DA's standpoint, no, it makes little sense to sign. Players should always test the market IMO unless they are with a team they want to stay and the offer is a very nice offer.
If everybody had like minds, we would never learn. GM Strong

Sure, it makes sense not to over spend on a QB, or to set the bar for another team to come in and offer him more. But if these numbers that are leaking out are close to what DA is being offered- that low end was passed along time ago.
The only difference possible could be the length of a deal elsewhere. 3 years for 20 mil seems fairly generous- with 11 mil or so guaranteed. If that is prorated out to a longer deal 6 years at 40 mil with about 20 guaranteed- seems like wishful thinking on DA and the agents part.
But, maybe some team out there is throwing these numbers around. By tomorrow night we should have a really good idea on what is happening. IF he is tendered, i think a safe guess is that DA and agent think there is more money out there. IF he signs the 3 year deal with the browns, he will be a rich man, even if he is holding the clipboard next year.

We Absolutely MUST Look at this in this Light
For once, Browns win either way
Posted by Terry Pluto February 26, 2008 20:02PM
The Browns have a three-year offer in front of Derek Anderson. The overall contract may be in the $20 million range, but the key number is about $10 million of the deal being guaranteed.
Is that enough to convince Anderson to sign?
Not sure about that, but the Browns should not go much higher. Not when they have Brady Quinn under contract for four more years at about $4 million annually if he starts, $2 million as a backup.
Anderson's agents had their eyes on Tony Romo money, the six-year, $67 million package with about $38 million guaranteed from Dallas. If a team wants to drop that kind of cash on Anderson, so be it.
Don't match the offer. Don't take a massive bite out of the salary cap. Don't worry that the restricted free agent may go elsewhere and become a star.
Let him go.
This is not to call Anderson greedy or to blame Anderson if a team wants to pay him like the second-coming of Peyton Manning after only 18 pro starts.
The Browns have two quarterbacks under the age of 25 -- and they believe both are capable of starting in the NFL. Quinn should be ready to start after a year as a backup. Anderson proved himself in 2007, making the Pro Bowl as an alternate after throwing 29 touchdown passes and having a 10-5 record as a starter. While his 19 interceptions were near the league lead, he also took the fewest sacks of any starting quarterback.
His strong arm blends well with Rob Chudzinski's offense, which highlights the ability to throw long to Braylon Edwards and Kellen Winslow. In the short term, there probably is no better team for Anderson because the Browns have a strong line, a 1,300-yard rusher in Jamal Lewis and those excellent receivers. The Browns believe Anderson and his family are leaning to staying with the Browns. It's also believed the market for Anderson among other teams is not as promising as his agents hoped.
That's because the price is steep.
With three years and $10 million guaranteed, the Browns have made sure that a team wanting Anderson will have to pay dearly -- a huge, salary-cap-eating contract. Assuming Anderson passes on the Browns' offer, the team can designate him a restricted free agent at $2.562 million for 2008. Then any team must surrender its first- and third-round draft picks to pry him away.
So it would be an expensive contract for Anderson, and losing two drafts picks.
Is Anderson worth all that?
That's what some quarterback-hungry teams are asking themselves right now.
In the meantime, the Browns have put themselves in a strong position with Anderson. If he leaves, they can take the first- and third-round draft picks and find a linebacker, find a defensive lineman, find someone to stop the run.
No matter who is the quarterback -- Anderson or Brady Quinn -- the Browns will never be an elite team until they have a defense capable of at least being mediocre against the run. In the past three years, they have ranked 29th, 29th and 30th in run defense.
If they keep Anderson, great. The Browns have gone from a year ago when they had no idea who'd be their quarterback to two very good options. Either way, the team will win on this deal.
Go Browns!!!

Actually this is going down the path a lot of us thought it would so I'm not surprised and no one else should be.. It's obvious DA isn't getting a lot of attention from the market..which is telling.

DnD I agree with everything the guy said with one exception.. What if BQ isn't ready or falls flat on his face. I think thats why PS wants DA under contract. The Browns are perfectly happy IMHO to eat DA's contract for a season in order to find out "IF" BQ is the guy. "IF" they can't get DA under contract ( I believe they will) I think PS will take the risk grab up whatever he can get in terms of draft picks and the Browns will move on..
I didn't and don't think the Browns will budge from 3 years, I just don't see it. Of course when you take a look at what some of the early 1st round QB draft picks get in the way of contracts I would put DA on par or near par with those guys, and they are pulling down huge contracts. The thing I see the Browns doing is this. They are offering DA real money that will secure his finacial future no matter what. While I would say that 2.56 is pretty good coin it just doesn't compare to 10 11 Mill and an uncertain future. Sure if he cleans up his game a bit, and puts up numbers along the lines of what he did last season while reducing his INT's he could set himself up for a huge payday.
The way I see it BQ will be the starter if he is just marginally better then DA thru TC, from there who knows, but I think BQ is about to recieve his chance to be the star he hopes to be.. That said if thats the case, I don't think DA's value will go down like some folks do, but it won't go up either.. So pretty much whatever numbers that are being kicked around by other teams and his agent aren't likely to go up come next season. Make no mistake tho, DA at this point has a very very clear picture of what he is likely to recieve in terms of a contract come next off season.
Like I said if he is signed come tomorrow it's because he and his people have reached the conclusion that the Browns offer is in line with what he will get come next year, and they will sign on the dotted line. If he isn't signed it won't be because he wants to test the market, thats been done already. It will be to try to pry more money from the Browns. That however could backfire if it drags on to long, if it truly is DA's intent to take the contract at the end of the day. I can see this thing dragging on until somewhere around about a week before the draft, after that I think Phil will try to deal DA's rights for whatever he can get in the way of picks..

your exactly right, which is one reason I refused to get caught up into all the DA must go, or DA must stay conversations on this board.

U very well could be right .... that could be what they truely do want .... my take is this ...
1. they offer him a 3 year deal believeing he won't take it until they gauge other teams interest in them .... so this offer was designed to accomplish EXACTLY WHAT THEY WANT IT TOO ...
A. Give DA a 3 year offer ... KNOWING B. that they wouldn't sign it until finding out for themselves what the interest in DA is .. if theirs not that much interest for DA for a 6 - 7 year pretty sweet deal AND giving us a 1st rnd or even possibly a 2nd rnd pick ....
2. If DA's agent does get some interest or he wants to squeeze us he doesn't sign it ... then ...
A. If their is interest we see what we can get . B. If their trying to squeeze us we up the offer to the max we want to give him so we can let the situation play out and we are not in jeopardy of having him leave next yr. for nothing or sticking the franchise tag on him .....
Thats how I see it breaking down .... we'll never know what their true intentions were ... what we will know within the next 24 hours is weather he signs it or not .....
either way he will be back here as I believe that their is not much interest at all in him league wide because teams do not want to give up a 1st or IMO even a 2nd rnd. pick for him on top of giving him a long term contract ...

http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=3266794Report: Browns increase offer to Anderson to 3 years, $20 million ESPN.com news services Updated: February 27, 2008, 10:00 AM ET With the deadline to tender restricted free agents looming, the Cleveland Browns are continuing their efforts to secure quarterback Derek Anderson with a contact extension. The Browns' latest offer is a three-year deal worth $20 million, with $10 million guaranteed, according to the Columbus Dispatch. There are indications that an agreement could be struck Wednesday or early Thursday, according to reports in both the Dispatch and the Cleveland Plain Dealer. Anderson is scheduled to become a restricted free agent on Friday, and he can either accept the Browns' offer, or take a one-year tender worth $2.52 million. With the tender, the Browns would be able to match any other team's offer to Anderson, or receive first- and third-round draft picks if he ends up with another team. Anderson, 24, who won 10 games and threw for 3,787 yards and 29 touchdowns in his first season as a starter, began the 2007 season as the backup to Charlie Frye . He ended up taking over and was a Pro Bowl alternate. Anderson reportedly received an earlier offer from the Browns for three years and $16 million, with $11 million guaranteed, according to the Dispatch, but he turned it down. However, Anderson has to weigh the cons as well -- he would be leaving as much as $17 million on the table if he doesn't accept the Browns' latest offer. Information from the Associated Press was used in this report.

I think Anderson will take this contract. There's risk involved with every game that you're an NFL QB. One injury to Anderson's throwing arm will kill his value as his strong arm is a major assett. If he has a weaker season next year, (may be some O-Lineman gets hurt or BE goes down) and his value will drop as well.
He goes down next year in play or an injury, he gets 2.5 million dollars. That goes away from 10 million + another probably 3 from his base year contract. Guarenteed money is a big think, and 10 million is a lot of cash. Not only that, but in a longterm contract he's gonna have to look at the cash he loses by playing for less instead of more next year.
This will be a down to the wire deal, but I think Anderson will sign.
Our plans with him..........undecided. But we do know that we want him for three years and he will sign this contract IMO.
But not trying to derail the thread, but I do think that Quinn will get his shot, and I think he'll probably win the job. Sorry DA. He might be traded after next year or he can stay on the team as insurance in case someone goes down.

The Browns' latest offer is a three-year deal worth $20 million, with $10 million guaranteed, according to the Columbus Dispatch. There are indications that an agreement could be struck Wednesday or early Thursday, according to reports in both the Dispatch and the Cleveland Plain Dealer.
Just to back that up...

NFL Anderson could re-sign with Browns before deadline Quarterback Derek Anderson could re-sign with Cleveland before the Browns' Thursday deadline to tender players, a source told The Dispatch last night.
The Browns' current offer is a three-year, $20 million contract, with $10 million guaranteed, a second source said. Earlier this month, Anderson balked at a three-year deal worth $16 million, with about $11 million guaranteed, The Dispatch reported.
If Anderson does not sign, the Browns will likely use their highest one-year tender worth $2.562 million, which will require teams to give up a first- and third-round draft picks to sign Anderson.
Free agency opens Friday.

NOT A SHOT IN HELL ... makes no sense on any level ... we could tender him and that accomplishes the same thing a sign and trade does ... only diff is we arent' on the hook for the Signing bonus ...
Sign and trade means that whatever team we trade him to has him locked up for whatever number of years and that has to be more appealing then a High Tender and Pick up in FA? More cost effective for the acquireing team as well,,
And I would think it's not a big choke point for the Browns as long as the signing bonus isn't to far out of line..
So I don't think it's a mortal lock that if he's signed, he's here! But your probably right!
I have a sincere question for you (or that matter anyone who knows). Who in the NFL has ever been signed and traded? If you know someone I would like to also know when. Thanks.

I was thinking that same thing. For a starting QB that went to the Pro-Bowl, 3 years and 20 million is pretty much nothing......especially when only 10 of it is guaranteed.
Shaub got what, 48 million and only started 6 games in his entire NFL career.

He's not going to sign... Three years from now who knows what will happen...
He's going to take his chance and see if someone else is willing to sign him and give up the picks or... he will just start another year for the Browns, and then hit the free agent market in 2009.

I have a feeling he'll sign.
That being said, I fear what will happen is he'll sign or be tendered and play for us in 2008. That's not what scares me. Right now, I'm at the point that I don't care who plays QB, I just want the team to win. Whether or not DA is a different story altogether and has been beaten to death.
My fear is that he'll play in 2008 and play well enough for it to be tough for us to easily dump him, but not well enough for us to realize he's our starting QB for years to come. Then, we are back in the "gray area."
I guess we'll just have to wait and see!

I think he won't sign the offer, we'll tender him, and then no other team will bother talking to him. So we'll have DA and Quinn for 2008. DA will have the opportunity to get that "Romo Deal" by having a great year. If not, we let him walk and go with Quinn.
I just don't see why either side would want this extension. We don't really know what kind of talent he is and he shouldn't want to accept a mid-range contract. Hurts both.

Your fears mirror mine. However, with Quinn waiting in the wings, I don't feel that DA can afford to have any "gray area" in his game. He either plays lights out and is the clear cut starter from here on out, or he is replaced. Sounds rough, I know. But we cannot wait beyond 2008 to see what type of QB he's gonna be.

I don't know the rules, but I thought if we did tender him this year, we wouldn't be able to franchise him next year. However, I could certainly be wrong.
Kardiac12, I think you have a good point, too that DA must play lights out.
Also, I saw this on www.KFFL.com. Maybe a big announcement coming? Maybe nothing? We'll see, I guess:
Browns | Team will host media availability day with Savage Wed, 27 Feb 2008 10:31:42 -0800
The Cleveland Browns will host a media availability day with general manager Phil Savage Thursday, Feb. 28, at 11 a.m. at the team's training facility in Berea, Ohio.

Here's just a general question for the salary cap gurus:
Quinn signed for $20 million with 7.75 guaranteed. Anderson potentially will sign for $20 million with 10 guaranteed. What counts against the cap, the guaranteed or the whole amounts?

I can't think of it ever happening either.. the point was that it's not a completely absurd idea like some would have you believe... Saying "NOT A SHOT IN HELL" is false. There is NOTHING stopping it except two willing parties.
And "makes no sense on any level" is a valid opinion, until someone does it. Then what is it?
And as I mentoned in my post, I didn't think it would happen either.. But it could!
Everything that hasn't happened before is always questioned in the same way, until it actually happens.. then the questions of will it or has it, stop being asked.
I don't know if I helped you at all Pdawg... but I tried to explain it to you.

Players are not signed then traded in the NFL. Their rights can be traded, after another team has worked out details on a contract ..... but cap acceleration of bonuses make it almost impossible to trade a player signed to a 3 or 4 year deal in the 1st year of that deal.
